Report: Sproles Was Set To Visit Chiefs, Chargers Tender Him Instead

And free agency has just taken another major hit.

Expecting to be one of the top five players available, Darren Sproles will not become a free agent, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Acee reports the Chargers will place the highest tender on Sproles meaning it will take a first and third round pick in addition to a new contract in order to pry him away.

Want to hear the hard part about all this?

Acee reports Sproles was scheduled to visit the Chiefs this weekend as well as the Rams, Eagles and Redskins.

It's still possible that the Chiefs could trade for Sproles at a cost lower than a first and third round pick. Remember, that's what they did with Matt Cassel last season.

DAMN IT!

we have to get him, damn those Chargers.

Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....

I thought

They had to franchise him?

by Alaskan Chief on Mar 4, 2010 2:26 PM CST via mobile reply actions

I thought so too

If that’s not the case they’d be idiots to just let him walk.

Predictions:
This year will be better

by jmcgoblue on Mar 4, 2010 2:26 PM CST up reply actions

No

But since they did that last year and they have to pay him 110% of what they gave him last year it is still a huge one year payment. $7,250,000 by my guess. They didnt have to franchised him this year.

well.. so much for that. man… fuck the chargers…

at least our name was mentioned

remember all that “no key FA’s want to play for Haley and Chiefs crap?” That should end all that right now!

Do you

really think that sproles would really sign with KC? No kind of payback scheme would have me riding pine playing behind JC (no matter how good he his) and not cashing in in the free agent market.

Basically he would of never come to KC, and we were never going to pay him what he is looking for….. Next

Haley told the offense to run it again. When someone said the defense already knows the play he responded, "So what, make it work."

To get

to play the Chargers twice a year, I think so. He would be our #2 back and automatically become our best returner since D. Hall, I think Charlie Weis would find plenty of use for him.

by WtexKC on Mar 4, 2010 2:30 PM CST up reply actions

what about the money?

Cause its surely about the money

We do have the

money, thats not the question. And I think for a player of his caliber and his age, they would open the pocket book a bit, I would hope.

by WtexKC on Mar 4, 2010 2:34 PM CST up reply actions

theres no doubt we have the money, but are we willing to pay over 7 mil a year for a back whose not starting?

I disagree. It's just a matter of time

before we find out if he was a homeboy. He was the perfect compliment to Charles. He was not ever going to ride the pine in KC. His versatility on this team would have been endless. Good hands, quickness, P/R, K/R the total package.
However he’s not worth a 1st & a 3rd. Damn it.
I have no doubts that he could of put our ST unit in the top five. Bar None… Next

What are you talking about dude???

Where do you think he’s gonna get a better opportunity? You think he will or can be some teams number 1??? Thats retarded. He’s tooo small for that. He will always be a second back who can catch out the backfield and return kicks and punts. Nobody is gonna shitcan there starter for him. He knows it. But the kid is a stud at whatever he does. I say, that kind of weapon, however it may be…is worth a few million a year.

Wow that sucks...

especially with him set to visit us.

I wonder if the Chiefs name popping up on that last prompted them to do something.

Guessing they wouldnt want to have to play him twice a year for the next 4-5 seasons.

by KCALLTHEWAY on Mar 4, 2010 2:31 PM CST reply actions

I bet Sproles is PISSED.

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

+ about 3 million

though with the 1st and 3rd Tender he is about to get reimbursed

Not about the money but about staying in SD. I don't think Darren was expecting this.

So they told him last week "No tender"

Then hit him this week? And how do the Chargers absorb paying him 7.2M this season with all the people they need to sign?

atleast this shows that Kansas City wants to be aggressive in free agency this year to a level that actually counts for something.

This really frustrates me

I was really liking the idea of a Charles/ Sproles backfield, with Darren handling KR/PR duties.. makes it even worse now that we know he had planned on visiting here.. Would have been a great story… local kid comes to play for the Chiefs.

Jamal Williams + a draft pick NT?

I know a bit off topic but since its a Sandiego theme….

What about Jamal Williams as a stopgap for a year and a mid to late round NT under him to develop? I know what people will say “he’s old and slow and injured” but honestly he’s going to be available, a proven NT, and hes better then what we have.

Anyone else starting to get the impression that owners are sending a message to the players?

Seems like with how the CBA is set up the owners/gms are using and abusing it to rub it in their faces as almost a bargaining tool. If I’m a guy like Darren Sproles Id be pissed right now and on the horn to my NFLPA rep to get this mess sorted out.

why didnt they just say that from the beginning

Now they look like jackasses

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

FA and Draft is all about oneupmanship and lying about intentions … Chargers just did what every other team does this time of year

DAMN SAN DIEGO!!

You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.
