The Fullback.

The fullback. The often times unsung hero of the offense. Former Chief Tony Richardson is an example. The FB is the bigger, more physical, back in the backfield. Who, let's face it is always the lesser known guy. Although very important at times. I remember watching a Texas College Football game and saw their FB, and watched a player where he just knocked the living lights out of a dude, the halfback went on to a pretty nice gain. So here is some insight on, The Fullback. Get ready, and JUMP!

*Disclaimer: I cannot be held reliable for any problems or injuries during the jump. whoever put it there and invented it is at fault, not I.

Star-divide

Alright, here you are, you made it safe and sound. (I hope)

The typical duties of a fullback are to: Block, either for the passing quarterback, or the running halfback, and occasionally go out for a pass. Most of the time, if they're on a passing route, they go out to the flats. Our fullbacks, for the Kansas City Chiefs are, Mike Cox, and Tim Castille. Some fullbacks that have seen great success are Lorenzo Neal and former Chief, Tony Richardson. Jim Brown, and Larry Csonka are greats that once played that position.

Here's some info on Cox.

An undrafted free agent signed by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008. He had just 3 carries for 5 yards for an average of 1.7, adding 1 TD in the final game of the season against the Denver Broncos. Not much. 10 receptions for 79 yards for an verage of 7.9, no TDs

Time Castille

Signed by Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2007. Kansas City signed him on November 17, 2009. He joined us later in the season. However, he fared better than Cox with 14 carries for 55 yards, for an average of 3.9 and no rushing TD's. 4 receptions for 37 yards and 1 TD, that TD being a 20 yd with him being squished between 3 or 4 Bengal defenders, which I still don't know how he held on to.

Mike Cox hasn't exactly been impressive, and Castille showed that he can get it done sometimes. Mike Cox year would, well was dreadful but that TD helps I suppose and was the first score in the week 17 Denver game. If it's me I'm leaning towards Castille to start for FB and either keep or cut Cox. He hasn't shown much and I don't see much more upside or potential. But's he served and helped us and has shown helpful every now and then. With the addition of Thomas Jones I see one of these guys getting cut.

So, not a whole lot of point to this post other than something to talk about other than mocking and drafting. Also a little take on one our unknown weak spots. So who do you think will be the starting Fullback in 2010-2011 for your Kansas City Chiefs?

But seriously

If it comes down to the two, I think Castille wins out. I’m not sure how each grade blocking-wise but Castille seems more athletic which I think Haley would prefer.

by Joel Thorman on Mar 30, 2010 10:10 PM CDT reply actions

That's what I think.

Castille, imo, showed and gave us more production in less time than Cox, who has been here for a few years and Castille here for less than a year. I see Castille as the starter, whether they cut one or not.

Agreed

Castille showed some great athleticism and I think Haley likes the option of another weapon on the field. I was beginning to see some production from the fullback position and I liked it. I’m not one to grade on blocking so that’s a wash for me.

Mike Cox is a tough, dedicated player but I’m not sure theres much talent. I have no problem with him staying on as the 2nd fullback and special teamer…I kinda like the guy

Nate, good post, well thought out and written ...

and you’re right, it’s a forgotten position … nobody thinks about the FB …

damn, who did we have for awhile, before TRich … talk about soft hands, had almost as many dumpoff catches as most WRs … gonna go crazy trying to remember who it was … {{ok, so I’m already crazy}} …

can we get TRich back?

Someody had to be blocking at the end of the year for Charles? I dont now exactly who to credit, but I think Cox can take some of that credit? how good of a blocker is he, because he doesn’t do alot of running or catching?

Well Castille and Cox split time after Castille signed pretty much.

Go watch highlights

of JC and LJ on youtube or nfl.com. Every play that Cox is in he makes a good block, then releases and follows the play. He’s usually the first player to join the celebration in the endzone.

Yes

I’ve noticed that too. We shouldn’t be so quick to count out Cox. Blocking is the main function of the FB and the one that’s not tracked by stats. From the highlights it looks like he’s doing a damn good job.

Sweet

I’m on PS3 my tag is hubs54 and chiefs_25

I created a new profile to make sure I was the only one using it in my household (chiefs_25) but then after I made it realized I made a mistake because I put my real age down as 16 so now I have some chat restrictions but I can still message.

I primarily use chiefs_25 but I will use hubs54 a bit sometimes.

Whats your tag?

round 5

draft pick will be a fullback, at least I hope. It would be a great place for value and need. Not saying Castille isn’t any good, but he is pretty small for an FB and I don’t know how well he blocks

I disagree....

I think Mike Cox has more potential, and will have a breakout year at FB. This kid can block. I think he was under utilized and deserves a better look and if we let him go, he’ll become a star on another team. Stats be damned. Give him more time. Just my gut instinct here.

by TheK-man on Mar 31, 2010 11:28 AM CDT reply actions

Cox is the FBOTF

At least that’s my opinion. I don’t care if he never carries or catches the ball; Sam Gash and Lo Neal were more valuable fullbacks than Mike Alstott ever was.

by burntorangehorn on Mar 31, 2010 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Finally...

Whew, I thought that I was the only one who noticed that MCox was an excellent blocker…

I think it all depends on what Weis wants from his FB. My thoughts…

I personally don’t see Tim Castille as a fullback. He’s a buffed RB or an H-back. Times that I saw him blocking weren’t that impressive, but he can run the ball like a RB. Correct me if I’m wrong, but all of his rushing yards came with him as the RB (when he was spelling JC or LJ, due to our RB injuries), not the FB. I’ve read that he’s not not known for his catching skills, but after the Cincy catch I’m willing to give him a pass on that. That was a heck of a catch.

MCox is a prototypical FB. He works hard and has a high motor. Don’t think that I ever saw him give up on a block or a play. Like someone else said above, he makes his block then runs downfield and finds someone else to block. You can say whatever you want about his pass-catching skills, but I don’t really think we know what those are. With our OL last year, we really need Cox blocking (snicker), not Cox catching (snicker).

Castille is versatile — he can be a passable FB, can sub for RB if needed, plus he’s good on Special Teams. Cox is more of the real blocking FB who will be blocking for JC and catch an occasional pass near the goal line.

by Chief_Elmo on Mar 31, 2010 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe its just on Madden where he sucks,

But I just don’t like him. He’s never been a huge part of our team.
