Jason Elam will sign a one-day contract with the Broncos on Wednesday to officially retire as a Bronco

Twitter / Denver Bronco

The guy caused us a lot of pain as Chiefs fans but he was one hell of a player.

This is similar to what we'll (should) be doing with Tony Gonzalez when he retires?

Short "one day contract" rant

If someone wants to finish off their career with a team, they should have to make at least one play. For example, Elam should be forced to come and perform his retirement ceremony at half time of a preseason game and kick an extra point or something. Isn’t that right Bill Simmons?

Isn’t THAT how you finish your career with a team? For instance, if Eddie Murphy said, “I’m retiring from acting, but I want to retire as a cast member of ‘Saturday Night Live’ again,” then they brought him to 30 Rock for a news conference and a one-day contract but he never appeared in a sketch, wouldn’t that be stupid? If you retire with a new team, I think you should be forced to appear for one play, shift or at-bat for them

Yeah.

I don’t agree with the one day contract but whatever. If it was me, they should have to go through an entire season, but that probably draws players away from retiring from their true homes, but if their truly loyal then they’d do it.

doesn't work

if they are retiring for medical reasons. Ok Brett, we need you to take one more snap before you can retire, I’ll hold your colostomy bag and zimmer frame, Bill will point you in the right direction and Fred will shout really loudly into your hearing aid when the play starts.

Which brings up an interesting point

I wonder when Brett Favre eventually retires if he will retire as a Packer?
I would doubt it.

I feel not.

Not with the way circumstances were on his departure. I think he will retire where ever he finishes, which should/will be Minnesota.

Elam is a good guy...

I hate to say it, but as much as I hate him, he’s a good guy and deserving of respect, if grudgingly so.
