Antrel Rolle Reportedly Expects $8 Million Per Year

Arizona Cardinals S Antrel Rolle is expected to hit the open market at 11:01 PM (CST) tomorrow evening for the commencement of free agency. The Kansas City Chiefs have a need at safety so we've been wondering if they'll take a peek at the former University of Miami star.

The Cardinals are reportedly still in the hunt to retain him while the Chicago Bears are the name with which he's most often linked.

The Chiefs? No signs of interest at this point, but if they want him, they'll have to pay, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

Star-divide

Rolle is expecting a contract that averages $8 million annually, one source with knowledge of the situation said. That's going to be a hard figure to reach. He already has turned down a contract offer from the Cardinals that averages more than $6 million annually, the source said.

Only three safeties average more than $7 million per year. They're all strong safeties: Adrian Wilson, Troy Polamalu and Bob Sanders. None averages $8 million, although Rolle's teammate in Arizona, Wilson, comes closest at $7.938 million.

That is very, very expensive if you didn't know.

The average salary of the top five highest paid free safeties: $6.25 million.

That number doesn't include a third of the roster

It’s just whose under contract for 2010…right now we’ve got like 18 players that aren’t.

And…there is no salary cap OR floor, which means most teams are likely to spend significantly less in 2010.

He's not worth it IMO

I know you generally have to overpay FA’s but I’ve never been all that impressed with Rolle to begin with.

I haven't watched him play that much.

Better than Brown, but not necessarily 8 million better.

Overpriced for me, Overpriced for Pioli

We can dream, but he is not the best safety in the league, and shouldn’t be paid like it. Would be a good pick-up, but he wants money, and I doubt we give it to him. Oh well

Wonder if Berry is going to average 8 million a year when we pick him #5?

thats ridiculous

Berry would make our D signifigantly better. He’s better than Rolle right now!

by BiiG_C on Mar 3, 2010 7:00 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Umm no...

Ridiculous is spending a top 5 pick on a freaking Safety when you have gigantic holes in the front 7 and OL.

Ridiculous is tabbing a guy who has never played a down in the NFL as being better than one of the best Safeties in the league.

Ridiculous is developing a mancrush on a guy based largely on silly highlight reels and Mel Kiper’s hairdo.

Ridiculous is thinking because you say he’ll make our D better that it automatically makes it true.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

Satch I have no idea if any of the top prospects is worth 10 cents

But like a lottery ticket 5 of them are going to cash in.
Bulaga
Okung
a couple of QB’s that should be 2nd rounders
Dan Williams

I would be all for trading up for Suh (using DJ as the bait, not Dorsey)
I would be all for now a small trade up to get Okung
I see Berry as a Cornerback just like Haden.
Who do you propose, cause I remember quite a lot but for the life of me I can’t remember if you said who YET :)

by Steve_Chiefs on Mar 3, 2010 7:16 PM CST up reply actions

I have said over and over that we should draft the best available LT.

I don’t pretend to know more about the prospects than NFL personnel folks, so whatever name fits that description for Pioli works for me. I have seen Okung and Williams play quite a bit, so I feel qualified to have an opinion. Okung I like, Williams not so much. Have seen Iowa some…Bulaga looks like a player. Have not seen Maryland at all, so won’t make some uneducated remarks about Campbell. Same with Rutgers and Davis.

Acceptabel fall back positions are CB, NT, LB and WR. You don’t waste a top 5 pick on a Safety when you have huge holes in your front 7. You don’t take RBs in the top 5 when you have a great one. We’re committed to our QB so, for now, I’m comfortable not taking one.

Lockdown corners are the most difficult players to find with teh exception of franchise QB, so when you see one, you have to consider it. I have seen Haden play a ton, and believe strongly he is the real deal.

NT is very important and we don’t have one. Picking one is not a bad idea. Especially if that NT is named Suh. For those people reading this who don’t think Suh can play NT, don’t bother responding. You won’t convince me and I won’t bother to try and convince you.

We have a need for 3 new starting LBs, so taking one would be fine. The need is most compelling at ILB, but a pass rushing OLB certainly is worth considering as well. I have not seen any LB in this draft that looks like a top 5 guy, but Pioli has certainly seen more games than I have.

WR is acceptable if they see a guy in teh Fitzgerald/Johnson mold. I don’t think Bryant qualifies. If they do…so be it.

The problem around here is folks form their opinions based on what they read and by watching highlight tapes. It’s silly. If you (not you personally) haven’t seen a guy play in games…full games…in context…you don’t know what you’re talking about and shouldn’t act like you do.

I have seen at least 10 Tennessee games the past 2 years. Berry is certainly a very good player. Is he slam dunk, sure fire, the-next-Ed Reed? Umm no. Ed Reed wasn’t even the next Ed Reed in college. Berry, just like any other college player, may or may not develop. Considering that everyone coming out is a question mark, the best move is always to go with positions that are harder to fill. Safety is the least important, easiest to fill position in a 3-4.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Mar 3, 2010 7:41 PM CST up reply actions

Because he's good...not great

When you have a chance to get a great LT…you do it. Albert is a good LT. H would be a great LG. 2 great players on the OL > none.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Mar 3, 2010 8:22 PM CST up reply actions

How do you know any of the LT

in the draft are going to be great? And I would argue that Albert will be great just look at the last 6 six games last year, 0 sacks, and two of those were against the nfl sack leader.

by badassz1987 on Mar 3, 2010 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know if they'll be great

and I don’t get paid to make that decision. We’ll agree to differ on Albert. He did a good job the last 6 games. At no point did I see him dominating the guy across from him. I watched Roaf and Alt just destroy guys for years. I am comfortable that I know what a dominating LT looks like. Albert isn’t it imo. If he’s good enough for you…cool. We’re both entitled to our opinions.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Mar 3, 2010 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

But unless Im mistaken

the zone blocking scheme is not meant for you to destroy the guy lining up opposite of you

by badassz1987 on Mar 3, 2010 9:10 PM CST up reply actions

You are mistaken

There is no scheme where you don’t want to destroy the guy you’re assigned to block. Zone blocking effects who you block…not how much you want to dominate them.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Mar 3, 2010 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

This is a quote describing zone blocking

Zone blocking is a technique in American football that is a simple and effective scheme for creating lanes for running plays.

In a zone blocking scheme, fleet-footedness and athletic ability trump size as desirable qualities in offensive linemen. Coordination and technique matter more than muscle in implementing a successful scheme because defensive linemen are often double-teamed at the point of attack. Creating movement on the defensive line is more important than opening a specific hole in the defense.

by badassz1987 on Mar 3, 2010 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

And?

Where in that Wiki does it say:

“But you don’t want your lineman to dominate the guy he’s blocking and drive him into the ground.”

Yes….the ZB does not specify exactly where the hole will be. However…dominating your man is quite useful in creating a hole somewhere.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.

worth it or not, at the end of the day, I think he ends up back in AZ.

My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:

1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.

We can get a decent S later, but can anyone be chosen in this year’s draft that will improve our pass defense and run defense and special teams altogether more than Berry?

He's an outstanding K/P returner???

You do know that he only returned like 3 kicks this past year… for about 21 yards? Just an FYI this was against Kentucky(last game of the season).

In 08 he returned two kicks for 32 yards.

That is far from outstanding.

What he expects and what he’ll get are 2 different things altogether. Johny Damon thought he’d get a 2 year contract for about 30 million after last season. He wound up getting one year for 8 million. Rolle is a good player, but I doubt he’ll get what he’s looking for.

by dablueguy on Mar 3, 2010 8:47 PM CST reply actions

Not to mention

Rolle is DJ’s age, While Berry is fresh outta college, so whos going to be younger when that 5 year deal is up?

Rolle WAS a corner his first few years in the league…

ANNND…
As much as i love Berry, last year it was foregone conclusion, at least in my mind, that Aaron Curry was gunna be a Chief. Should I be worried about my extreme optimism that Berry will be in KC?
