Kansas City Chiefs Sign A Quarterback
No, really.
According to Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com, the Kansas City Chiefs Chiefs have signed QB Tyler Palko.
Don't worry if the name doesn't sound familiar. There's a Chiefs connection - Palko spent some time on the Cardinals roster after the 2008 season.
Palko was originally an undrafted free agent signed by the Saints in 2007. He spent much of the year on the practice squad (and some on the active roster) before being released.
He was out of football in 2008 until signing with the Cardinals in December of that year. He was with the club until September cuts at which point he was once again not on a NFL roster.
He moved to the CFL after that and eventually landed with the Steelers in November of 2009.
And, as Looney notes, Palko comes from the University of Pittsburgh, where he used to throw to a receiver named Larry Fitzgerald. He's also famously the one that caused Joe Flacco to transfer from Pitt to Delaware.
This makes four quarterbacks on the Chiefs roster: Matt Cassel, Brodie Croyle and Matt Gutierrez, in addition to Palko.

I totally didn't expect this.
Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...
Nah...
I highly doubt it has anything to do with Croyle…this guy was in the CFL last season. He’s not a No. 2. Offseason fodder to push the others…
I follow the CFL
And I’ve never even heard of him. Its not like he started and had a good season or anything.

He was on the
Montreal Alouettes and was placed on their practice roster. He was signed to the active roster on November 2 and was released on November 25, allowing him to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...
ahh
I’m pretty sure Chris Leak is Momtreals 3rd string QB meaning this guy was a 4th string QB in the CFL? Woo

Yep, that why this seems to be such a weird signing. He's only ever been on the practice squads of
several teams.
Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...
not a big deal
they had 4 qbs on the roster last offseason, I believe
gotta keep bringing in possible developmental talent at every position
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB
Right
but they had 4 QB’s last year I think because they were pretty sure they weren’t going to keep both Thigpen and Croyle.

true
But, I don’t see anything that would indicate a qb change… just another “tryout” guy that may not make it through camp

it is rare
but there have been a few players come from the CFL and do well… Don’t think this guy will, but just saying.

Go Chiefs!
I wonder....
But he’s probably just camp fodder.

I think it may mean they might lose/trade/ Croyle
I don’t think they need 4 arms for camp. Could be wrong but…

Odd time to pick up a QB.
Surely Brodie is safe. Maybe the Gut man is a question mark on this team.
Can’t imagine Pioli showing his cards just yet. Maybe the mystery of this pick will surface soon.
Scott Pioli's star will shine in 2010.
Win or lose, the Chiefs scare the bejesus of all opponents in 2010
As I posted below.
You need some to throw to all of WR’s we bring in to work out.
Teams bring 4 and sometimes 5 QBs to camp.
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

He's certainly not unheard of
he was a prospect coming out of college. Interesting signing, hopefully he’s battling for 3rd spot

Maybe
from a team desperate for a #2 QB…but a 4th is probably the best we could get.
Unless we play him a lot in the preseason and his stock increases, then maybe a 3rd in 2011.
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
Also Pioli brought in Gutierrez
so it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that they consider him good enough to be Cassel’s backup.
It is just curious timing as they must be in the midst of working out their tenders and signing their unrestricted free agents. Wouldn’t they worry about Camp fodder later?
If they give Croyle a reasonable tender they might be willing to part with him, which would explain this move. Especially if they think there is a market for Croyle.

I mean this guy has been available for a while.
He was released on December 9th.

Oh i hope we don't trade Croyle
IMO Croyle is the best QB on this team, and other than his injures he would be our starter.
by CPT.Caveman on Mar 3, 2010 3:17 PM CST reply actions 1 recs
What good is a QB that stay in the game?
Buffalo might give us a third or second for Brodie. If so I say we take it.
How do we know he can't stay in the game now?
Can you really say at this point, that B.Croyle can’t stay healthy. I don’t think anyone in here can say that B.Croyle can’t stay healthy now. With O-LINE improvement’s other than what he had to play behind, i think he would be just fine. IMO it would be crazy to get rid of our 2nd best QB, and after preseason, he might just make you change your mind’s too
I agree CPT
I’m tired of people being down on Brodie because of his past injuries. He’s been training and putting on muscle (something he probably didn’t have to do in college), and he’s probably more durable than he was a couple of years ago.
by Hail2DaChiefs on Mar 3, 2010 3:56 PM CST up reply actions
agreed ... Croyle has a LOT of upside, as I've said several times during the course of this past season ...
… while Cassel was throwing INTs, or holding the ball so long you knew not only would he be sacked, but by whom
I so hope Haley has TRUE “open competition” from the get-go this year, as I truly believe Croyle could and should be the starter

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
Well, I can tell you folks that you can bet we're not taking Tebow in the draft...or any other QB for that matter.
The future is ours KC Chiefs fans!!!!!

could have told you that before this move. =)

you wouldn't take tebow as a FB in the 5th?
I would
The first 3 picks of the draft will be defense. Pioli loves him some defense.
Not only a FB
I’d take Tebow as anything in Round 4 or later…but he won’t fall that far.
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
I like Croyle.
It’s plain to see he won’t be our starter. Trade him to someone out of division, see what we can get, and give a good kid a chance to start elsewhere. I think it’s a mistake, but I see it coming.
I agree
Croyle is nice to have as a back up but if he could stay healthy he might have a chance to develop. I admire the kid coming back from that knee injury.
I’d like to see him go on and do well.

Keep him...
the QB class this year is thin. Brodie serves as a good back up.
Draft prediction top 10 - 1. Bradford 2. Suh (Chiefs trade up) 3. McCoy 4. Claussen (trade Campbell to Carolina, trade for J Brown) 5. Okung (Detroit) 6. Berry 7. Haden 8. Campbell 9. Davis (Bills trade for Vick) 10. Morgan (Jags draft Tebow in 2nd round) 2/23/09
Agree totally, Brodie is probably one of the best back ups in the league.
Cassel could go down on any given Sunday. Who we gonna have to replace him?.
Either we acquire a decent back up or we keep him. Either way it would be a waste to trade him.(just another hole to fill)
Granted, a #2 or #3 pick for him would be enticing. But we would still be without a quality back up QB.
Scott Pioli's star will shine in 2010.

I had massive hopes for Croyle when he was drafted.
He was gonna be our guy for a long time. Apparently the calcium gods disagreed.
As I brought up in another thread, Palko was the QB who scared off Joe Flacco from Pitt
Flacco realized he couldn’t beat out Palko, so he packed up his balls and transferred to Delaware.
I have beat wholesale ass for a whole lot less.
completely unrelated
But martin bayless just came into my work and we bullshitted for about 15 minutes.

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

Had to Google him
Don’t remember him. Why did we let him walk to Washington and then resign him after one year? Don’t see that too often. Jason Taylor last year I guess.

name sounded familiar but didnt know it right off
Nice guy though. He talked about Joe, Marcus, and Carl p.
He’s got a camp for kids down here in a few weeks. He was giving out fliers
Anybody remember anything about him as a player?

The way I see it..
you need someone to throw to all the collage and free agent wide recievers we will be trying out over the next several weeks. I’m sure there will be a lot and we don’t wear out Gutierrez arm.
I think Matt would love to be doing that knowing him. It would give him and Weis a chance to work on Mechanics and such.
Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...
Yes, but...
when you’re bringing in 10-12 WR’s every other day for a work out, throwing 30-40 balls to each, you will wear out his arm pretty damn quick! :)
They will probably slap a high
tender on Brodie Croyle thinking they will keep him, but if someone bites on the high tender they may consider moving Croyle for an additional draft pick or picks.

Palko?
Is this the Shane Palko that choked up in the sugar bowl and has been cleaning boats down at the pier until the players wouldn’t cross the picket line and then he led generals to a win over San Diego?
No...his skins a different color...but the name is spelled the same....

nobody ever thought Thiggy would do anything in this league either…ever, but after his 1 and 2 got hurt he found himself leading the Chiefs…and did a fair job too. He got traded and has a more permanent home now. You never know what the future holds.

He couldnt even beat the Huskers when Callahan was the coach
that’s saying something. He cant be any more than just a guy for rookie mini-camps in May to throw the ball and save the arms of the guys who will actually be on the team.
The studs from the 2010 draft class will be: DT Ndamukong Suh, S Eric Berry, RB C.J. Spiller, RB Jahvid Best, WR Arrelious Benn, WR Golden Tate, WR Mardy Gilyard, OT Charles Brown, CB Kyle Wilson and S Chad Jones
{{eyes start to water up}} Why did you have to bring up Callahan? {{goes off to cry}}
My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.
WRITE IT DOWN!
wow
I was a big fan when I saw him in a preseason game with the saints…interesting.
Vince Wilfork will be Scott Pioli's top offseason priority and will be a Chief.
KC Will Trade Derrick Johnson=
Probably just fodder, or maybe they want a lefty QB for special plays?
My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:
1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.
Conspircy theory:
Maybe they are gonna trade for Matt Leinart!

You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.
