Kansas City Chiefs Sign A Quarterback

No, really.

According to Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com, the Kansas City Chiefs Chiefs have signed QB Tyler Palko.

Don't worry if the name doesn't sound familiar. There's a Chiefs connection - Palko spent some time on the Cardinals roster after the 2008 season.

Palko was originally an undrafted free agent signed by the Saints in 2007. He spent much of the year on the practice squad (and some on the active roster) before being released.

He was out of football in 2008 until signing with the Cardinals in December of that year. He was with the club until September cuts at which point he was once again not on a NFL roster.

He moved to the CFL after that and eventually landed with the Steelers in November of 2009.

And, as Looney notes, Palko comes from the University of Pittsburgh, where he used to throw to a receiver named Larry Fitzgerald. He's also famously the one that caused Joe Flacco to transfer from Pitt to Delaware.

This makes four quarterbacks on the Chiefs roster: Matt Cassel, Brodie Croyle and Matt Gutierrez, in addition to Palko.

Does that mean

that Croyle is on the trading block?

by WtexKC on Mar 3, 2010 3:10 PM CST reply actions

Nah...

I highly doubt it has anything to do with Croyle…this guy was in the CFL last season. He’s not a No. 2. Offseason fodder to push the others…

I follow the CFL

And I’ve never even heard of him. Its not like he started and had a good season or anything.

He was on the

Montreal Alouettes and was placed on their practice roster. He was signed to the active roster on November 2 and was released on November 25, allowing him to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

ahh

I’m pretty sure Chris Leak is Momtreals 3rd string QB meaning this guy was a 4th string QB in the CFL? Woo

Yep, that why this seems to be such a weird signing. He's only ever been on the practice squads of

several teams.

not a big deal

they had 4 qbs on the roster last offseason, I believe

gotta keep bringing in possible developmental talent at every position

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

by stagdsp on Mar 3, 2010 4:04 PM CST up reply actions

Right

but they had 4 QB’s last year I think because they were pretty sure they weren’t going to keep both Thigpen and Croyle.

true

But, I don’t see anything that would indicate a qb change… just another “tryout” guy that may not make it through camp

I think it may mean they might lose/trade/ Croyle

I don’t think they need 4 arms for camp. Could be wrong but…

Odd time to pick up a QB.

Surely Brodie is safe. Maybe the Gut man is a question mark on this team.

Can’t imagine Pioli showing his cards just yet. Maybe the mystery of this pick will surface soon.

Scott Pioli's star will shine in 2010.

by Burnsomatic on Mar 3, 2010 3:15 PM CST reply actions

Maybe

from a team desperate for a #2 QB…but a 4th is probably the best we could get.

Unless we play him a lot in the preseason and his stock increases, then maybe a 3rd in 2011.

Also Pioli brought in Gutierrez

so it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that they consider him good enough to be Cassel’s backup.

It is just curious timing as they must be in the midst of working out their tenders and signing their unrestricted free agents. Wouldn’t they worry about Camp fodder later?

If they give Croyle a reasonable tender they might be willing to part with him, which would explain this move. Especially if they think there is a market for Croyle.

Oh i hope we don't trade Croyle

IMO Croyle is the best QB on this team, and other than his injures he would be our starter.

by CPT.Caveman on Mar 3, 2010 3:17 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

What good is a QB that stay in the game?

Buffalo might give us a third or second for Brodie. If so I say we take it.

by Ray Brown on Mar 3, 2010 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

How do we know he can't stay in the game now?

Can you really say at this point, that B.Croyle can’t stay healthy. I don’t think anyone in here can say that B.Croyle can’t stay healthy now. With O-LINE improvement’s other than what he had to play behind, i think he would be just fine. IMO it would be crazy to get rid of our 2nd best QB, and after preseason, he might just make you change your mind’s too

by CPT.Caveman on Mar 3, 2010 3:51 PM CST up reply actions

I agree CPT

I’m tired of people being down on Brodie because of his past injuries. He’s been training and putting on muscle (something he probably didn’t have to do in college), and he’s probably more durable than he was a couple of years ago.

by Hail2DaChiefs on Mar 3, 2010 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

agreed ... Croyle has a LOT of upside, as I've said several times during the course of this past season ...

… while Cassel was throwing INTs, or holding the ball so long you knew not only would he be sacked, but by whom

I so hope Haley has TRUE “open competition” from the get-go this year, as I truly believe Croyle could and should be the starter

I like Croyle.

It’s plain to see he won’t be our starter. Trade him to someone out of division, see what we can get, and give a good kid a chance to start elsewhere. I think it’s a mistake, but I see it coming.

by skunk420 on Mar 3, 2010 3:21 PM CST reply actions

I agree

Croyle is nice to have as a back up but if he could stay healthy he might have a chance to develop. I admire the kid coming back from that knee injury.

I’d like to see him go on and do well.

Keep him...

the QB class this year is thin. Brodie serves as a good back up.

Draft prediction top 10 - 1. Bradford 2. Suh (Chiefs trade up) 3. McCoy 4. Claussen (trade Campbell to Carolina, trade for J Brown) 5. Okung (Detroit) 6. Berry 7. Haden 8. Campbell 9. Davis (Bills trade for Vick) 10. Morgan (Jags draft Tebow in 2nd round) 2/23/09

by I_Bleed_Red. on Mar 3, 2010 4:25 PM CST up reply actions

Agree totally, Brodie is probably one of the best back ups in the league.

Cassel could go down on any given Sunday. Who we gonna have to replace him?.
Either we acquire a decent back up or we keep him. Either way it would be a waste to trade him.(just another hole to fill)
Granted, a #2 or #3 pick for him would be enticing. But we would still be without a quality back up QB.

you need someone to throw to all the collage and free agent wide recievers we will be trying out over the next several weeks. I’m sure there will be a lot and we don’t wear out Gutierrez arm.

when you’re bringing in 10-12 WR’s every other day for a work out, throwing 30-40 balls to each, you will wear out his arm pretty damn quick! :)
