Under 36 Hours To The Chiefs And Free Agency

Yes, the mirage in the NFL offseason that is free agency.

News. Actual news.

Here are a few stories floating around as we count down the hours to free agency.

Star-divide

Panthers make "last ditch" effort to keep Peppers

Julius Peppers is the crown jewel of free agency this year. There's no doubt that when he wants to play, he can play with the best of 'em. However, the cost is the problem associated with him.

According to Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com, the Panthers made a "last ditch effort" to retain Peppers in the neighborhood of $14 million per year.

Fourteen freakin' million. Per year.

According to various reports, Peppers will have trouble getting more than $10 million per season. But all it takes is one team...

Browns guard could become available

The Browns are not expected to retain unrestricted free agent guard Rex Hadnot ,according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

Hadnot was signed by the Mangini regime so it wouldn't be far out there if the Chiefs and GM Scott Pioli were interested in him.

Hadnot's cousin, James, was drafted by the Chiefs in 1980.

Bears TE Greg Olsen on the trade block?

According to Peggy Kusinski of NBCChicago.com, Bears tight end Greg Olsen told his agent Drew Rosenhaus to find a trade partner.

Olsen reportedly isn't high on new offensive coordinator Mike Martz, who rarely uses the tight end.

The Chiefs have a need at tight end. Hmm...

I still remember what Pioli said las yr about that extra 2nd rounder “we could use it to acquire a person”. Trade? We’ll see.

I dont like how NFL players can demand trades these days

And it’s not like the Chiefs or Haley or Weis or whoever wants to call the plays uses a lot of tight ends either. At least for passing.

If he is the only player that can catch a ball

They will…I remember Pope and Cottam getting a lot of looks towards the end of the season

My Prayer

Please God, PLEASE let some good players want to come play for the Chiefs this year. I can’t take another year of signing players that nobody else wants.

Wehave to send a message tot he players but signing a big name and...

pay him! For example if Antrel Rolle is released, sign and pay him! It’ll show that we are serious. Just speculation on the A Rolle signing. Doubt he is even going to leave Az.

This is so so so exciting. I can't wait. The second the season ended all I did was sit glued to AP

for any trinkets. NOTHING. But now it’s finally coming to fruition. I can’t wait!! Go get it done Pioli!! Get it done!!

Lol Kray.

That’s why I took a 2 or 3 week break from AP. There’s only so many mock drafts and random mumblings I can repeatedly read before getting bored. I’ll be back in the AP office for the next few weeks (during the free agency and draft), and then I’ll take a break until training camp starts.

Nowadays 1 Arrowhead drive is locked down tight like Fort Knox. Not much info is coming from there, and while it kind of sucks for us fans, I get the importance of keeping your cards close to your chest. There are 31 other teams out there that won’t hesitate to poach players or make underhanded moves to improve their own team. We won’t hear anything of relevance until Pioli & Co want us to.

My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:

"Shut the f--- up."- Matt Cassel
"WHAT THE F---?!?!"- Todd Haley

Chiefs don't really use the Tight Ends either

Would it make sense to trade for a guy like Olsen?

The Chiefs will take a defensive player with 3 out of their first 4 picks in 2010

by fairmont on Mar 3, 2010 12:49 PM CST reply actions

nah

wouldnt waste a draft pick on him, doesnt seem to match our high needs. We need NT, safety, ilb, center and wr#2.

Any Thoughts on Mike Bell

The Saints aren’t resigning him and he could be a solid short yardage back for us. His production slowed to a crawl towards the end of the regular season and post season but the guy is a heck of a bruiser.

by OmahaNick on Mar 3, 2010 12:52 PM CST reply actions

he was? I thought they didnt tender him! DARNIT!

definitely was on the mike bell bandwagon, he could have been a great goal line 2nd back option with no threat to the full time job….darn!

The Chiefs do NOT have a need at TE

If Martz doesn’t use a TE, Haley and Weiss only do a bit marginally more. TE isn’t a need relative to the many, many other holes in the roster.

by Dagda on Mar 3, 2010 1:26 PM CST reply actions

I agree...

although I wouldn’t mind signing Ben Watson to a modest contract. He is a legitimate red zone threat.

Draft prediction top 10 - 1. Bradford 2. Suh (Chiefs trade up) 3. McCoy 4. Claussen (trade Campbell to Carolina, trade for J Brown) 5. Okung (Detroit) 6. Berry 7. Haden 8. Campbell 9. Davis (Bills trade for Vick) 10. Morgan (Jags draft Tebow in 2nd round) 2/23/09
