How good are the Chiefs? Inherently, better than last season
We often make the mistake of assuming that the statistics from last season give us an accurate view of how good a team will be on week one. It sheds more insight than having no information at all, but it only shows so much. Conjecture regarding the Chiefs' 2010 success is better served by the following formula:
(as good as they were at the end of last season) + (improvements that have been made) - (deterioration/lack of retention). More explanation later.
The Broncos game was the high point of last season, week 17 Chiefs win 44-24. If that game were repeated 100 times, perhaps the Chiefs only win 50 of them, or less. (I tend to believe this is not the case, and I also believe that the Broncos wouldn't start out 6-0 again in 100 tries).
But at any rate, we can see that, even if the Chiefs played 'over their heads' in that game, that however good they were week 17 2009 is a better indicator of how good they will be in week one 2010 than however good they were on week one 2009 - as players and teams generally improve over time. However, too often we look to the average of games 1-16 of last season as an indicator of this year's team.
To our benefit, the Chiefs are an example of a team that improved, I would say, more than the average over the course of the season.
(as good as they were at the end of last season) + (improvements that have been made) - (deterioration/lack of retention)
The formula, explained:
(as good as they were at the end of last season)
At the end of last season, I believe it can be almost universally agreed that:
- the offensive line was gelling to a greater degree than at the beginning of the season
- the running game was better than it was in the beginning
- the new front office, coaching staff, and players were 'on the same page' more at the end of the season than the beginning
Most areas on the team are similar. The team made substantial improvements. If there had been no changes whatsoever this offseason, the team still stands to have a better record this year than last, just based on improvement of existing players and staff. Luckily, positive changes have been made, and there's even more room for improvement!
+ (the improvements that have been made)
Since the end of last season, I would say there has been one major position upgrade, and that is at RB (this assumption based on 2 running back positions - the backup position was upgraded substantially.) The rest of the signings (I like all of them) were either player retention or players who may or may not make the team, may or may not be starters, may or may not add depth, contribute. I believe we can assume, at minimum, that the sum of the 'non-Thomas Jones', 'non re-signing' contracts of this offseason will improve the team.
Now to coaching. The Chiefs have signed Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel. Few can argue that these two signings will not improve the Chiefs, and therefore can be validly included here. Additionally, I believe that Todd Haley will be a better coach. Whether 'better' is 'good enough' is a different argument, but I think it can be assumed that the division of duties, focus, experience, etcetera will result in a legitimate 'improvement' at that position.
Now the draft. The Chiefs have 3 picks in the top 50, and 8 in the top 150. This is far better than league average.
As a rough estimate of the upside of this type of draft, that is, the maximum benefit the draft could bring to the team, if repeated 100 times, I offer the following:
2 potential ROY's and 2 potential quality starters, and 2 players that get quality playing time this year.
That's of course extremely unlikely, but just an approximate maximum upside -- the best one could ever hope for in a draft as far as impact this season is concerned.
On the flipside, the absolute worst draft that could be considered possible for a team to have:
2 players with 3 games each (played in a backup role). 2 locker room cancers, 1 holdout, and a gaggle of releases/practice squad competition.
I think we can safely assume that Pioli will do something better than the worst possible in the draft. I think we can further assume that the result of Pioli's draft will constitute an improvement. If so, the draft is a legitimate addition here.
- (deterioration/lack of retention)
Players break down and get older. Players forget stuff over the offseason. Players have an off year. Players are lost to free agency. Bad blood can develop over a club incident in the offseason. Weird shit happens.
The Chiefs are a young team, and figure to be fairly healthy starting the season. Haley & Pioli have been focusing on 'the right 53', which, if it has any meaning at all, would mean the Chiefs are a bit less susceptible to attitude problems, bad blood, and off the field issues. Additionally, the Chiefs have lost a relatively small amount of talent from last year to free agency. I believe it can be safely assumed therefore, that in the 'deterioration/lack of retention' area, the Chiefs will suffer no more than the average NFL team - and I would say substantially less than other teams.
The main conclusion I draw from all of this is that, overall, we're not in as bad a shape as it looks. An additional point I'd like to make is that the widespread assumption this post claims to debunk - that is, that the Chiefs must make changes to be better than last year - often leads to poor analysis of the team. (On other websites I mean. You guys, awesome. Out there, morons)
Posters who say things like, '"We must draft a XX or we will only win 3 or 4 games again" are not correct. There is no reason to believe a claim like that would be true, as we can see that the team would stand to improve without having made any changes at all. But we have made changes - major ones. Charlie Weis, Romeo Crennel, and Thomas Jones by themselves could be argued to be worth 2-3 games. Add to that player improvement, chemistry improvement, and other free agent signings, and expecting 3-4 more wins (if repeated 100 times) is not absurd. Now consider that drafting ANYONE AT ALL constitutes a chance to improve, does it not follow that a plan to fill X position 'no matter what' is a bit reactionary?
Posters who say things like, "If the Chiefs don't make the playoffs, I'm giving up on Pioli/Haley/whomever." are similarly going too far. First, because the Chiefs may be 6-8 at the end of this season and miss the playoffs, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they haven't improved enough by the end of the season that, with no changes, they are a playoff quality team, despite having missed the playoffs. Secondly, because a team with a new offensive and defensive coordinator can't be expected to reach maximum potential instantly. It may be week 8 before we start seeing the team get on a roll. What if they go 7-1 in the last half... but miss the playoffs?
So, in summary, it's a process. Enjoy it :)

alright first comment
i voted 6-10. their was good improvements in key players of the future at the end of the year. cottom showed a lot of promise at the end before getting injured. TE was a position that was pretty average during first half of the season. Brandon Albert was great in the last 6 games and their is no reasoon why he cant continue that into next year. Alberts play at the start of the year was horrible so if he can play all of next season the same way he played at the end of last year, cassel will be able to throw the ball a lot more. and of course their is jamaal charles who should only get better. and an improvement on last season could make him even better than chris johnson was last year
tru
I would say albert, hali, dorsey, jackson, charles, flowers, maybe even bowe, all have a chance to have their best seasons this year. if we hit lightning in a bottle and a bunch of those guys hit peak – this could be a fun year.

plus
u never know wat the draft could bring for us. however, jackson will only improve if we get a solid nose tackle like terrence cody or dan williams or cam thomas in the draft. he needs a nose tackle

thats not true
dorsey did. and he was in the same position TJackson is right now, only Tyson has a year more in the system under his belt.
i’m not saying don’t get a NT. we need one. but clearly dorsey is a good test case to show that players can develop and show their potential on their own, despite not being surrounded by the perfect players.
if rhymes were valiums, i'd be comfortably numb

its just
i think dorsey is just a more naturally gifted player than jackson. and thats why he had a good year. time will tell

NT is a place I'd like to see improve.
But I was thinking about this today: What if the coaches stand pat on defense? How good could the team be in say, a couple years? Who knows what Crennel can do with them, but it’s interesting to think about.

I too voted 6-10
But improvements in the areas you mentioned, better cohesion, experience, coaching, along with a nice draft and we are looking at a possible 10-6, although 8-8 is more likely.
Kansas City Chiefs - 2020 Team of the Decade
yeah
im seeing us at around 8-8 to 9-7. anything else is unnacceptable or not really possible, IMO

Said 6-10 also....
If we were bringing back the exact same team I would see 6-10, but with the improvements we have already made even before the Draft, I see 8-8 this coming season.
Agree with 6-10
The team was just starting to “get it” and everything was starting to come together all around. The improvements so far are actually huge. Weis, Crennel, and the other coaching additions are significant. TJ and Lilja are also significant. Our O-line improvement through the year plus Lilja and Wiegman, and the potential that Brown has will make the current line better and cause a great improvement over the end of the season.
The D is my only concern. We must draft well and bring in immediate impact starters.
I totally left out Lilja and Wiegman
but they are significant improvement.s, and there are others

here's an idea ... let's wait for the draft
then watch for signs of progress throughout the summer and into the fall, then really take note of how well (or not) the team is playing late in the fall and then … at the end of the season … we can much more adequately and intelligently address the question
have a great day

That isn't speculation, that would be observation.
If you removed all the content on this site that was based on speculation, what would be left.

What fun is that, Ups?
I thought we were all here to discuss what we hope/think might happen with the team. I still say that I wouldn’t be surprised if this team finishes anywhere from 6-10 to 10-6 next year. I would be disappointed if we finished worse than 6 wins, and I would be absolutely shocked to see that we end up with more than 10 wins. I’ve said before, this team had about 6-8 close losses last year. I think, even with said improvements, it would be unrealistic to believe that this team will definitely win more than half of those. I think experience and time in the system can help make some improvements, so I voted for 6-10 this year without any further additions. I think that it is a huge assumption to believe that Weis, Crennel, and Jones automatically translate to 2-3 wins; but I think it is reasonable to expect that an influx of talent at the coaching and playing positions, coupled with the “nother year older” theory, could result in 3-6 wins this year.
I’m cautiously hoping for an 8-8 finish next year. I would consider that marked improvement, and it would clearly poise us for a realistic run at the playoffs in 2011.
Very rational approach to the subject.
It is still based entirely on conjecture, but I think your reasoning is sound. It would be interesting to see if you could find some data based on the improvements/declines of other teams that would support your assertions.
that would require a degree and a job at some major network
or a blog, http://www.pro-football-reference.com , and some motivation

In theory KC should be competitive...whether thats 5-11...6-10...all the way to 11-5 CAN happen...
probably a 7-9 8-8 but….I just want to see what I am pretty sure we should see….and that is quality coaching turning football players into GREAT football players…turning UDFA’s into solid depth…and of course, matt cassel needs to show us hes the guy, or its very likely that we move on…
I want to see what we’ve been asking for…improvement, and a glimpse at hopefully NEAR future
I am on TEAM O'CALLAGHAN-RT
KC Will Trade Derrick Johnson

Hey J
Disagree with you about our needs at this point. I see no real need at TE, we have Pope and Cottam, they will be fine no more than we will need them in a C.Weis offense.
I agree we need to address the C position in the draft, but with Casey we are better off at this point than we were last year.
I think we need to draft a LG this year, because Waters will be retiring soon, as far as the RG position Lilja will fill that spot, and as far as depth RG is our deepest position IMHO. With the RT spot again i believe that spot is fill by O’Con who is just fine, he show improvement over the later part of the year as well as the rest of the o-line.
We all know we need to draft a NT,OLB, and a Safety, just one safety though, M.Brown or Page will fill the other spot, and Berry will be playing opposite one of them. Most of who you said we need will be addressed in this years draft, and IMO we will have a damn good team if we draft right. Look out division next year, cause the Chiefs are back in town.
I voted 7-9
But was really torn between that and 8-8. An off season worth of improvement with the current roster would have won the Cowboys, Browns and Raiders games, possibly even the Ravens opener.
The Chiefs will take a defensive player with 3 out of their first 4 picks in 2010
interesting way to look at it
also I think there’s always a chance the 2009 Chiefs average over 4 wins if given 100 tries to do it.

I voted 6-10
and rec’d this cause i have never seen ETC spelled out. Nice write-up man
Winning isnt a matter of life and death, its more important than that.
