Chasing Mount Cody

What do you make of a player nicknamed Mount?

"Mount" Cody, stands at 6'5'' although he registered at 370 pounds at the Senior Bowl, he was down to 354 by the NFL combine (pro scouts generally want to see him at 350, so he is almost there). While his 40-yard dash time is nothing to write home about (around 5.6 on an average day), he is actually quite agile and his lateral movement makes him a beast against the run. Cody will be an ideal fit at nose tackle for an NFL team that runs a 3-4 defense.

I have been chasing the best possible pick the Chiefs can make with the 5th overall selection. I have wandered from Rolondo McClain, to Eric Berry, back to McClain and then to Brandon Graham. All of these players fit needs for the Kansas City Chiefs at Safety, ILB, and OLB. All of these players also are arguably the best of breed in their positions of play. The Chiefs greatest need long-term though is at NT. Shaun Smith may be the answer for 2010.

We have seen the impact of losing your NT mid-season. Jamal Williams. The Chargers overcame the injury in a weak division. We have discussed later round picks for possible 3-4 NT prospects. But, if you could get the best of breed NT?

"Day in and day out, I'm trying to get in better shape and keep the weight off and maintain my strength. This is the best shape I've been in since high school, but this is me getting into good football shape."

Cody ran the 40-yard dash in 5.62 and 5.64 seconds, down from a 5.73 at the NFL scouting combine. He also bench pressed 225 pounds 22 times, posting a 7-9 broad jump and a 22-inch vertical leap.

I do fear Mount Cody will play for San Diego, Denver, Miami, Buffalo, Baltimore, or Pittsburgh. Where the Chiefs could take Cody before any one else could we might wait till it is to late. We were willing to trade our seconds for Wilfork, We are willing to spend the 2b or the 3rd pick on Cam Thomas (Who IMO does not have the potential upside of Terrence Cody) Who is Terrence Cody?

Frankie Ellis said, “I had heard a story about when Terrence first came to Alabama nobody ever sat by coach Saban on the bus. He sat right behind the driver. The first time Terrence got on the bus he sat down next to coach Saban and coach Saban asked him, ‘Son, do you want the window seat?’

“I asked him ‘Do you sit next to coach Saban on the bus? I heard you always did.’ He said, ‘I sure do. I sit by him on the bus, at the restaurant, at the movie theater, wherever we go.’ I asked him why he did that, and he said he just liked to aggravate him.”

“This guy has a good heart,” Ellis’s wife, Mandy, said of Cody. “As big as he is, he has a very soft, kind voice. His manager said that anytime something touches his heart, he hangs with it. At one point while they were here, one of the people with him asked, ‘Are you ready to go?’ and he said, ‘Not with all these people here.’”

What the Ellis’s expected to be a 15-minute drop in turned into a visit that lasted over two hours.

“Daddy was in the chair, and (Cody) sat down right there next to him for the whole two-and-a-half hours. He never left Daddy’s side,” daughter Carrie Brooks said.
