Compensation In Chiefs, Dolphins Trade Finally Revealed
After six months, we've finally nailed down the details of the Kansas City Chiefs trade with the Miami Dolphins.
The assumption was that the Chiefs gave up a sixth round pick for the rights to offensive linemen Andy Alleman and Ikechuku Ndukwe.
That assumption is correct.
Chiefs GM Scott Pioli and the Dolphins' Bill Parcells had been mum on the details of the trade. Both had refused to comment in the past.
The NFL released the official order for the NFL draft (via Josh Looney) and here are the Chiefs choices (as we suspected):
First round (1)
Second round (2)
Third round (1)
Fourth round (1)
Fifth round (3)
Sixth round (0)
Seventh round (0)

Good to finally know for sure.
Predictions:
1) Fans will feel just scads better from mid-to-end of the 2010 season.
2) During the 2021 season, Ryan Succop will become the Chiefs’ all-time leading scorer with 1469 points.
Good
I was a teensy-bit worried, but not too much
A top heavy draft...gotta like that eh guys?

I can almost guarantee we will end up with a 7th round pick
I think Pioli is the kind of guy who in later rounds is looking to shop for more promising guys. The success that New England had in later rounds always made me think that maybe they had a better personnel department who did more research and thus had a bigger board. So in Round 5 if there is a guy you like but see 3 or 4 more guys on your board you also like, maybe you offer a trade of that 5th for a 6th and 7th, or two 7ths.
Or we may trade 2 all 3 of our 5ths to move back into round 4 and grab someone we have our heart set on…this is going to be a crazy freakin’ draft
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
Could be
I don’t think anyone other than Haley and Pioli know what those two want. I’m not sure Weis and Crennel even know the whole story
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
That's what i was thinkin'
Those 3 picks in the 5th could turn into good players and keys to this team.

Thanks to Thiggy
a 7th round pick turning into a 5th.
Lets hope we can turn a couple of those 5ths into a 3rd.

He didn't cost the Chiefs a 7th rounder
he cost the Vikings a 7th rounder. Even better.

now here comes 234,874,934 more mock drafts!
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
I have a feeling we'll be trading down from our first 2nd rounder
especially since there is a day between the first and second round. If Tim Tebow is still on the board when we draft, someone might try to trade up with us. Then we could pick up a couple late rounders.
Who needs late rounder when we have 3 5ths.
The Chiefs should use those picks to trade up to get a player they want.

Yep, 6th and 7th rounders are practically throw aways
..unless you need a kicker or punter which the Chiefs do not.
Well with that arguement
Maybe the Chiefs should trade their 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounders for a bunch of 6th and 7ths so they can draft 10 Tom Bradys this year.
Just Don't Have Enough Roster Spots
To have room to sign the 64 players that make up the entire 6th and 7th Rounds. Since our #5 Pick is likely worth more than both rounds combined…
I think you're right
but I’m not doing the math

I personally like the top of the 2nd/bottom of the 1st for best values.
I feel that’s where you find playmakers who don’t break the bank, if you pick smart. After that, it becomes much more of a “Who’s got the smarter system for consistent success?” sort of thing.
Or a blocking TE...or a FB

Just what I said, above.
A lotta possibilities, there. Some of the “system pick” stuff I’ve been talking about might make sense, especially at positions believed to be deep in this draft.
I'd like to trade down as much as possible
Within reason of course. If there’s no one you’re in love with at the pick and someone makes you a nice offer, take it. The more picks the better.
Would love to trade down too...not sure we can find a team willling to move up.
The wild card in this whole draft is Waters. Is he going to be moved to Center or traded. Doubting Center since we got Weigman. We got Lilja and he will be on right side and I think they are comfortable with Ryan O’Callaghan@RT so that leaves Albert at LT till Lilja fails or Waters is gone. I am almost positive we are not going for Berry. Betting on 1.Beluga (not sure where he goes if drafted in my scenario) 2.McClain 3.Haden or 4.Dan Williams. Chiefs have been looking at a lot of safeties in a deep Safety class that will be available after 3rd round which is what I think they will do. Of the 4 I am hoping McClain or Haden is the choice since they are less of a reach. A shutdown corner that buys time for the D-line to get to the QB would be great for our particular line and he would start over Carr. McClain would be a good fit to push DJ to OLB (where he belongs) and start next to Demarrio Williams so he is 2nd best option with deep LB class. Dan Williams is 1 of 12 true NT in draft which artificially elevates his stock. The question at this point is what NT are they more enamored with as they can get Cam Thomas or Terrel Troup with 2B pick. So I guess my hypothesis as to who they are going to pick is CB/Joe Haden or NT Dan Williams (as they proved last year they are not afraid to reach). just putting pieces together…not my choices.
Hard to argue against Lilja or Wiegmann, BUT their signing does little to clarify matters for me.
And I’m not so sure KC doesn’t reach for Dez Bryant, especially in light of their obvious interest in safeties in what is considered a deep safety class, as you say. The ONE championship KC won, seems to me they had a guy named Otis Taylor RIPPIN’ it UP. Yeah, they had Willie Lanier, TOO, but they haven’t had a DOMINANT WR since Otis retired.
Agreed H
In the 90’s IMO if we would have had a Dominant WR we would have won at least 1 Super- Bowl. On the other subject of our o-line we have Albert, Waters, Wiegmann, Lilja, and O’Callaghan, that is a pretty good upgrade from what we had last year, so now we need to draft future replacements for the LG, and C positions.

I love how Pioli and Parcells were just playing with everyone by not officially revealing what was pretty much common knowledge.
in the backyard bbq-ing:
Parcells: Hey Scotty, you know what we should do? It would be hilarious.
Pioli: No Dad, what’s up?
Parcells: When we finalize that trade…
New body. Same soul.
Might've been some private chuckles.
More likely, they’re both just sensible and disciplined about how they go about their business. In a competitive enterprise, if there’s nothing to be gained and possibly something to be lost by tongue-wagging, then keep your trap shut.
We need to hit with those top three picks.
It would be really nice if we could pick up three starters.
Four would be even better
if a bit tougher. A starter in the first and both seconds, solid rotational guy with the third, possible contributor with the fourth and some potential depth with the fifths.
It would likely take a great draft but a guy can dream.
Chiefs need a good draft, no question.
But you need to look at the draft as a whole. A smart system will produce quality players over time. Certainly you WANT to hit on the top 3 picks, and they ARE the most likely to produce starters, but there are some positions, like WR or CB or … where you WANT to take your shots at hitting a home run, if you want to be a dominant team, and you might go down swinging, here or there. But I think Pioli shares your desire to make as sure as possible that those top picks turn out to be starters, even at the cost of missing out on some flash.
I respect that, but part of going to the 3-4 is to economize every once in a while and get a hit on a low-mid-round hit, preferably a widebody who brings his lunchbucket and plays unselfish 2-gap. You get a few of those hits and you’ve given yourself more chances to take those cough Dez Bryant shots at dominance.
Give Carl some credit...
His trade of a disgruntled Jared Allen resulted in Brandon Albert and Jamaal Charles. Turned out to be a nice trade after all.
Jury is still out
I wouldn’t say that we “won” based off half a great season by Charles and two ok years of a left tackle for an all-world DE.
He was disgruntled at Carl, not the chiefs. So Carl gets credit for that, too.

Yes but look at it this way.
Remove everyone that we got for J.Allen from the team, then put him back in the line -up, and what do you get…. well, a team with a lot more important holes to fill. What we did with that trade was start the rebuild of team that had been neglected thru the draft and had been fixed by placing band-aids over the sore. Carl Peterson let this team go to shite, by not drafting future replacements for aging players in keys positions. H.Edward’s was the Chiefs Ollie North and fall guy for the Chiefs demise.

those 3 fifth round picks
are the cherrys on top :) honestly though the fact we dont have a 6th or 7th doesnt bother me when we have 3 5ths
Paint ya shirt red like a Kansas City Chief
Totally
You can look at what is available, and if you don’t like it, one of those 5ths can turn into a 6th and/or 7th round pick, with some compensation next year.
Often, teams will give you the same round next year, but with a lower pick this year attached.
Lot’s of flexibility in this draft. All they have to do is trade down. For teams that want to go up, they can ask for a 7th added on to a package and easily get it.
Pioli might trade back into the 6th or 7th, using next year's picks
since this is a deeper draft…
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* KC will NOT draft a LT in the first round, and the draft WILL be heavy on defense
Do you think Pioli will attempt to aquire some seconds somehow for next year?
Or is that a Croyle/DJ/someone else trade later this summer?

Great thought
a lot of 5th round picks and some solid value players “supposedly” slipping into that round, could be some action, love to see it happen.
Thomas Jones and the Lombardi, DO IT!
I do think he'll try to stockpile draft picks
like NE does…
he doesn’t have as many “arrows in the quiver”… teams arent’ lining up to give the Chiefs draft picks for their players at this point… but that should change as the team improves

I kinda like the idea of having the 3 5ths.
I’ve been skeptical of people saying we can get a decent OL in the 5th, but with the 3 picks, there, all of a sudden you’re in a position to maybe double-up before the (fer instance) OL talent/upside takes another step down. If you feel you have a pair of guys who are 50-50 (or better) prospects, you up your percentage of getting ONE quality player to 75% or better. And if your scouts are any good, you should be able to get better than 50-50 for any of your picks, which puts you at 80% probability of success or better in at least one of ‘em, which ought to count as a success for the team, if you’re squeezing starters outta the 5th (they DO happen, but not all that often, and it prob’ly takes a smart system to achieve it).
If you have three picks in the fifth
it sure increases your chance of having a hit on at least one of them. I would way rather have three fifths than a fifth, sixth, and seventh.
