Chiefs' Chambers Wants Jersey Number 84

WR Chris Chambers signed a three-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in the first week of free agency. Since he's going to be sticking around for a while, he's thinking about getting the number he really wants.

Soren Petro on the Chiefs Red Zone Podcast asked Chambers if he was thinking about making a change from his No. 11 from last year.

Star-divide

"That's the debate here because I have a lot of people that like 11," Chambers said. "I only had two choices [when I came to Kansas City] -- 11 and 13. I chose 11. I really want to get back into number 84, which I had my first year."

If you're superstitious, then No. 11 is probably the way to go since he performed well after coming to the Chiefs.

"Everyone is saying, 'Oh you did well with 11. You need to keep it.' I keep telling everyone, '84 is my number'. I did well in 84 as well."

The Mothership lists WR Chandler Wililams, who spent part of 2009 on the Chiefs practice squad, as the owner of No. 84 right now.

Technically, the team assigns jersey numbers but players have been able to work things out in the past.

"It's just a number but I'd like to wear that number again in the red and hopefully the NFL approves it but we'll see down the line," he said.

Hope you didn't buy a No. 11 Chris Chambers jersey.

Not surprised.

I think I had heard him make a comment about #11 being weird for him earlier in the season.

I hope he gets his wish. If not #84, #89 should be open now that Sean Ryan is out. I believe that is what he wore in SD.

Since this post leads me to it, I would like to bring up the fact that I HATE that all WR’s are allowed to wear numbers in the teens. Never liked that rule. Special exemptions like Keyshawn had to get back in the day…fine, but anything else, I just don’t like it.

TE’s can wear numbers in the 40’s ONLY if all numbers in the 80’s are taken. This same rule should apply to WR’s wearing numbers in the teens.

That’s my take anyway…

Not really superstitious myself. That stuff is stupid.

Though, logically speaking, the 11 on his jersey HAS to make him a lil speedier. You know, from aerodynamics.

The Chiefs will see a return to respectability in 2010, emerging as the front runner in the AFC West! ....And I'll quantify that however I choose. Ahem.

yea I seen on the Mort report

here a few years back where they said 89 was the heaviest number and came up with some crazy stat to prove the drop in production of the guy who had to switch to it.

Whatever makes him happy

I know some people just “feel” better in certain numbers. If it makes him feel better and play better, GIVE HIM THE NUMBER. I care about production.

#84 is...Chandler who?

Let Chambers have 84. Now that you paid the man to play…let him have the number he wants.

Numbers are very importanat to players. You'll be suprised how many players feel that same way.

If he’s a starter he should be able to get that number. I say give it to him. You ever see that kid claiming to be Spiderman without his suite on? That kid just aint the same without his mask, give it to him and see how much more confident he is.

silly

Really Who were the best Chiefs to ear either number.

is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

This Chiefs team is closer to a new expansion team than it is a playoff contender, your expectations should match that.

I predict the Chiefs trade down from the number 5 pick.

I really like Chambers in the number 11...

nothing superstitious or anything like that… I just think that it is pretty cool to have the number 11.

Go Chiefs!!!!

ive never liked

11 on chambers. it just looked odd on him

at least its better than in college where everyone but linemen wear random numbers and you can’t tell what position anyone plays

by SillyHatDay on Mar 21, 2010 11:14 AM CDT reply actions

i dont like it when someone does good in a number

tyhen goes to another team and changes it – thats just me…i didnt like how cassel has 7- i think he shouldve taken 15 or 10 (since he wore it in college) – 7 to me with him just doesnt feel right. chambers rocked 84 in Miami then had to change to 89 in san diego and now has 11, if he wants 84 give it to him. when chris chambers was chris chambers, he wore 84. let him take 84.

Paint ya shirt red like a Kansas City Chief

I just hope he plays up to his potential

even if he is wearing a quarterback’s number

by mikedkc on Mar 21, 2010 11:28 AM CDT reply actions

#84

If he is willing to commit to be as great as Fred Arbanas, let him have it.

by HowSweetItIs on Mar 21, 2010 11:28 AM CDT reply actions

I don't really care...

If he want’s a new number give it to him…but if he keeps it Cassel to Bowe could be called “7-11”
