Chiefs At Tennessee State Pro Day to Check Out a Safety

The National Football Post's Aaron Wilson, who has been all over these Chiefs scouting visits, tells us that the Kansas City Chiefs were on hand in Nashville yesterday to check out Tennessee St. safety Anthony Levine:

Tennessee State safety Anthony Levine, an NFL draft sleeper on the rise, boosted his stock with an impressive Pro Day workout today.

According to a league source, Levine fastest time in the 40-yard dash was 4.43 seconds, unofficially, and he bench pressed 225 pounds 19 times.

Also spotted on the TSU campus, per our source: the New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Chicago Bears, Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Levine is 6 ft. tall and weighs 193 pounds. Described as thickly built for someone of his height and weight, Levine is projected to go in the late rounds, if not undrafted.

Levine makes at least 10 safeties that the Chiefs are interested in drafting or signing. According to the number of reports we've come across, safety has been given the most interest by the Chiefs during this draft season.

If the Chiefs draft Berry will you still be doing that?

Just wondering…and if so…for how long?

Does this mean

They are not going to take Berry at #5? This class seems deep at safety. I’m split on Berry. I do think Safety is a glaring need. Doesn’t it seem like last year, EVERYONE has us taking CURRY and Pioli throws a curveball!

Exactly what I was thinking

Checking out so many mid to late round safeties means Berry landing in KC is less and less likely.

or it's the proverbial smoke screen

Although it is highly unlikely that Berry doesn’t make it to #5 so smoke screens don’t merit value for that purpose….but geez…who knows?

I find it to be TOTALLY not the case.

Kc PROBABLY takes 2 safeties as it is….

PLUS, to TAKE berry at 5, I would think KC would want to see if there is a similar talent that can be had later….its all about doing your homework…

I think

KC is scouting as many safeties as possible. Maybe trying to figure out how big the drop
off is.

You never know… KC could draft Haden and move Carr to Safety. Allowing them to draft a safety in the later rounds.

  1. Haden
    2a – LB
    2b – NT
    3 – WR
    4 – TE or OL

Flowers / Haden
Page / Carr

i think there was a fanshot about this...

but it discussed the general size that crennel has had at saftey in the past and i don’t know that carr fits that mold well… although i’m sure we’ll make sure our best 11 guys are on the field somewhere

There is also no guarantee that Berry is available and I’m sure since it is such a need they are covering their bases.

home, of the....CHIEEEEEFS!

Berry could be trade bait, too

There’s a couple teams right behind us who’d like him, and maybe don’t have the most…steely-nerved of draft teams. So, Pioli’s just doing his homework, earning his paycheck.

It wouldn't be the first time Pioli drafted a player out of Tennessee State

I believe Javarris Williams was drafted from there in the seventh round.

Berry

Only thing I can figure is Pioli is trying to figure out if Berry is that much better than a safety he can take in a later round. If the difference is great, we will end up with Berry. If not, we will probably end up with two later in the draft.

Also, I get this funny feeling, that the more safeties we look at, we will end up not drafting Berry.

With the 5th pick in the 2010 draft the Kansas City Chiefs select Eric Berry of Tennessee!

by dahd11 on Mar 20, 2010 1:16 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed

He’s trying to determine if the talent is there in the later rounds, and if so,going with a different position at #5, or trading down.

On another note

Have we brought in anyone who can play nose for a workout? We need linebackers and safeties, but it seems the consensus that they are nkt nearly as hard to find as a nose tackle.

by gochiefsgo on Mar 20, 2010 1:17 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

next year is the years to draft our NT

Jerrell Powe or Phil Taylor. Those guys are the dominant NT type

by RamX21 on Mar 20, 2010 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Well I would certainly hope so considering last year's poor performance at safety
Levine makes at least 10 safeties that the Chiefs are interested in drafting or signing.

safetys

bottom line we have to have a good solid safety back there and berry will help as soon as he hits the field this is just a wish but it would be great if we got sharper too

by tombomb on Mar 20, 2010 10:48 PM CDT reply actions

We still need long term OT

I just don’t see drafting Berry at 5. It sounds nice but if Okung is there, get him. If not, get Bulaga. I just don’t see the positional value of selecting Berry here when you have so many good safties that can add up to a solid D backfield later. Goo Offensive Tackles don’t grow on trees and nobodies trading them. Get a 10 year lineman.

by Sloehandman on Mar 20, 2010 11:52 PM CDT reply actions

Thing is, compared to Berry, good OTs are pretty common.

There are two or three OTs rated as high or higher than Okung almost every year. Last year, Okung would have been maybe the third or fourth OT taken. Next year, there’ll probably be two or three about as good as him. So, when I hear somebody say “we need Okung,” I think they’re really saying “our offensive line was bad, so draft offensive line first.” You pretty much said that when you said if not Okung, then Bulaga.

Berry, on the other hand, looks to be a once-every-five-years player. He’d be the top rated safety almost any year. So Berrylovers are actually in love with Berry, where I think most Okunglovers are just drafting a position without having a specific idea of which player they actually want. There are good safeties available later, but also good interior linemen, which KC could use more than another LT.

The path to Victory is made of losers.
