Chiefs Have Decisions To Make On The Offensive Line

The Kansas City Chiefs currently have five offensive linemen under contract for the 2010 season. Free agency starts Thursday at 11:00 PM (CST) but don't worry. Many of the remaining Chiefs without contract are restricted free agents meaning the Chiefs can control their rights (and match any offer those linemen receive).

Under contract in 2010 for the Chiefs (5): Colin Brown, Darryl Harris, Brian Waters, Branden Albert and Jermail Porter.

Star-divide

Two of those guys (Harris and Porter) spent much of the year on the practice squad.

RFAs (4): Ikechuku Ndukwe, Rudy Niswanger, Ryan O'Callaghan, Barry Richardson.

Richardson is an exclusive rights free agent which means he has no negotiating power. He can take the Chiefs offer or not play. That's assuming they'll offer him.

The lone unrestricted free agent is actually an important one -- Wade Smith.

Smith, who will turn 29 at the end of April, has been with the Chiefs since 2008.

Suffice to say, the Chiefs are in prime position to address the position in the NFL Draft. Plus, there will be some, what Scott Pioli calls "natural attrition" with the roster. Take a look at the tackles and guards/centers were on the roster when the season started.

There was some turnover and I expect the same this season. 2009 was the year of the defensive lineman, we'll see if 2010 brings the out the other side of the ball.

Here's hoping we keep Ndukwe

Doesn’t look likely with Alleman’s release though being as that he received more playing time last season than Ike.

I can't imagine Pioli cutting both to keep from paying his father-in-law a pick

We did play both last year so the deal should still be on IMO

He probably...

doesn’t care. He isn’t going to be president of the Dolphins for much longer anyway. Its a 6th round pick (I hope that it).

Draft prediction top 10 - 1. Bradford 2. Suh (Chiefs trade up) 3. McCoy 4. Claussen (trade Campbell to Carolina, trade for J Brown) 5. Okung (Detroit) 6. Berry 7. Haden 8. Campbell 9. Davis (Bills trade for Vick) 10. Morgan (Jags draft Tebow in 2nd round) 2/23/09

Not a bad backup. Would love a new center and rg in the draft. Maybe a late g/t project

Hopefully Colin brown can fill the rg spot in the future and we will draft our future lg

they should tender all the RFAs

no reason not to

IF they get a better player in FA or the draft, they can still cut the incumbent

but, by NOT tendering these guys, and letting them walk… KC really paints themselves into a corner

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league

I'm SURE they will keep him

Haley was very happy with him last year, I think.
Clearly thought of him as the best OL “off the bench”… filled in at every position.

Wade comes back, O’Call comes back for sure, Rudy’s probably back, and Ndukwe and Richardson are the question marks…

I thought Ndukwe and Alleman would both be back… and alleman could very well be… they might just not have wanted to pay his full tender amount

i saw alleman as the odd man out

his blocking style is a little different than what the chiefs were doing at the end of the year.

i think Wade is better. Rudy is better. Both those guys can play guard or center.

i want to say Brown will step in and be better than Alleman…but i have not seen enough of him to know that for sure.

You know I respect your opinion

but are you sure you aren’t just seeing the improvement and not the big picture? What I mean is you spend hours and hours watching the Chiefs OL..you see guys improving from teh start of the season..which is good…but how do they stack up aginst good players?

Rudy is bad…real bad…barely backup quality.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Mar 2, 2010 7:12 PM CST up reply actions

Strait up

he needs to move to guard. i think he can be back-up quality. And he does not stack up against the good players (meaning starters).

i liked his progress and his demonstration that he is athletic enough to be a zone blocker. he showed he could reach a defender and also get to the next level (needs to finish however)…something at the beginning of the year i could not say.

So, can he continue to progress with the coaching he has gotten or did he top out. i don’t know.

i am not saying all this to suggest that the Chiefs should not try to upgrade. just pointing out that his progress might suggest that he might now have a value as a backup.

i still say he is better than Alleman by the end of the year.

Alleman could still be back.

An RFA tag is at least 1.01 Million

According to this site:
http://football.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ/Ya&zTi=1&sdn=football&cdn=sports&tm=10&gps=86_263_1020_632&f=00&tt=14&bt=0&bts=1&zu=http%3A//www.chiefswarpath.com/home.htm
Alleman was only being paid $460k last year.

So the descision not to tag him and let him shop around to set his value may still lead him to resigning with the Chiefs.

Berry or Haden in 1st
Cody in second
Spikes in second
Center
then a SS or O-Tackle
Whatever is missed in 5th or whatever is best. Maybe 2 WR’s and a TE

Sry bro

but this happens constantly around here. We try to have an intelligent discussion about a player but then it quickly devolves into some guy posting:

“I’d take him in the 1st.
2a: Dude who gives me wood.
2b: Dude who gives me wood but everyone knows won’t be available.
3rd: Dude who gives me wood that shouldn’t be drafted until the 5th.
4th: Dude who gives me wood because I saw him play one game.
5a: Dude who gives me wood because he ran a fast 40.
5b: Dude who gives me wood because some comentator likes him.
5c: Dude who gives me wood because nobody else is talking about him and mentioning him makes me look smart.”

It’s crazy. The conversation switches to some silly ass mock and the good conversation about the player is abandoned.

It makes me not want to come here anymore.

O-Line

Last I checked Jamaal Charles dominated towards the end of the season. Not sure if it was him, or the O-Line, but I am beginning to think maybe we should worry a little less about the O-Line right now. (I agree our line CAN be upgraded from where it is now.) In this order in the draft let’s get a Safety, WR, NT, and so on.

by dahd11 on Mar 2, 2010 7:46 PM CST reply actions

OL was MUCH improved in the 2nd half

Partially due to Charles, partially due to them finally getting used to the ZB scheme, I think.

There is still room for improvement, of course… but it’s clearly NOT time to panic and junk the whole group and rebuild.

add a couple of good pieces, keep building each year

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft

The O-Line still needs much improvement

I have a feeling that Waters will be the starting Center. I also think that Rudy is a much better Guard than Center, so I believe we will keep him.

Between O’Cal and Albert I feel comfortable with the tackles. Putting Waters at Center, Wade or Rudy at Guard, and bringing in a strong L Guard will make the line better. I really don’t know the readiness level of Richardson, but I hope that he has improved to the level of playing. Otherwise, I can’t see keeping him.

Ok so im doing a Mock Draft and I need your opinion.

with Gerald McCoy available at 5 do you take him or Berry. Which one is more of a need? I am leaning towards giving you McCoy because of BPA and him very likely being a Franchise player.

McCoy really doesn't fit our scheme

if these are the only 2 options you’ll consider for your mock.. Then Berry.

well give me who you think best fits your scheme that is at the top.

these are the people taken before you guys:
1) St. Louis Rams - Sam Bradford (QB, Oklahoma)
2) Detroit Lions - Russell Okung (T, Oklahoma State)
3) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Ndamukong Suh (DT, Nebraska)
4) Washington Redskins - Anthony Davis (T, Rutgers)

Haden, Berry, McClain and Bulaga would all be in play in that scenario.

As would a trade down for a team coveting Claussen. I would make Bulaga and Haden the favorites. LT is always the best top 5 value and best CB is always more useful than best S.

by Brsrkr on Mar 2, 2010 8:36 PM CST up reply actions

I see where you are coming from

they have been spoke of in similar fashion. I just believe the need for that position is greater in this situation than it was our year. The injury/knee issues also had an effect on dorsey that that is absent when speaking of Suh. Now this year you have McCoy on that same tier, but I think the two of them have separated themselves sufficiently from the rest of the 4-3 DT’s. As much as the lions need a LT as well, at the end of the season they pointed to their current LT as a position that is good for now (so i’ve heard from die hard lions fans. That’s right, both of them.) We’ll see.

by jakethesnake27 on Mar 2, 2010 8:41 PM CST up reply actions

Suh has had some minor knee work done.

I think a year from now, we’ll all be saying "oh, well, Bradford was the franchise pick, and look how much Okung helped, and McCoy fit their scheme SO much better, and you just KNEW Shanahan had to go offense, and isn’t Suh’s progress a little slow, and and and aren’t Marvin Austin and Jared Crick the best linemen the world has ever SEEEN?!!!

my thing is many think bradford, suh, and McCoy will go 1,2,3

I personally don’t think that happens because how often do you see the top three players go in the top 3 spots?? not often cause that isn’t always top need.

Bradford-Suh-McCoy could happen

I just think that Detroit will lean more towards Okung as the fear of not getting a LT…again…begins to weigh on them. They can’t let Stafford get killed again this year. No matter how much they like Suh. Then TB is sitting there picking between the guy they had resigned themselves to get (McCoy) and fell in love with or the guy they didn’t think would be there (Suh). Not gunna be surprised if they stick to their guns and go McCoy.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

agree completely about Detroit and is why I went that way.

yea idk you could very well be right but at least now ill stay with suh and give you guys bulaga i think. I don’t value Haden as a top 5 pick I think that is to high and you can get a good CB in the 2nd or 3rd IMO

I think the wildcard with that will be Shanahan

He had more mobile offensive lines in Denver, so they would be good at taking cheap shots, so he might wait for a mobile tackle later on rather than take the best all-around tackle.

McCoy doesn't fit a 3-4

I don't think Rudy

will be starting anywhere. I think he’ll be a backup if we get an upgrade at center. If he got pushed around at center, why would he be stronger at guard?

I don’t know about Brown’s role. I’d like to think he has one, but I think it’s probable he just got moved to guard on the roster because O’Cal surprised at tackle. Brown was a spread tackle at Mizzou, and I don’t know how that translates to a guard that has to pull. O’Cal’s backup, I think.

Right now, I’m thinking that Alleman might have been released because KC plans on acquiring multiple new starters, and they want room to keep Rudy and Brown. Or maybe Haley just doesn’t like him, and I need to think about something besides football for a few minutes.

The path to Victory is made of losers.

I could be wrong

but I think Brown was working at guard before O’Callaghan was added to the roster. Maybe someone remembers better than me.

bh13 is correct

Brown was working at RG in camp, and looked decent
O’Call came later, and took RT from Ndukwe

Oh right, I remember that. This senility thing's kind of fun sometimes, makes everything seem new.

They thought we had two or three viable right tackles to start the season, and it turned out we had none, right? I wonder how things would have went if they’d recognized that at the start of camp, and had Brown working at tackle instead of guard. We might not have picked up O’Callaghan, or Ndukwe.

Dammit

I wanted Pouncey to fall to the second :)

Pretty good picks, I think. It’s good to see some different stuff. With KC having the fifth pick, most of the draft talk here is just about the same three or four names over and over again.

I think you offer Smith, Richardson and Niswanger – backup guard-tackle-center trio, otherwise your trading a low draft pick away in august for the same.
