Could DE Jimmy Wilkerson Come Back to the Chiefs?
There's no rumors floating. No news out there to grab onto with this one. So this is purely conjecture on my part. Still I have to wonder about a guy that we saw for years here at Arrowhead: Jimmy Wilkerson.
It's not that J-dub blew up the stat categories while he was here, so it wasn't a stupid move, per se, to watch Wilkerson get his release from the Chiefs three years ago this month. From 2003 to 2007, Wilkerson never had more than .5 (yes point five) sacks in a season or more than 24 tackles. Yet the last two years in Tampa Bay, Wilkerson had a combined 69 tackles and, more impressively, 11 sacks.
Schemes are everything in the NFL and the wrong guy quickly becomes the right guy when utilized properly. It seems that perhaps Wilkerson either needed time to grow (which many players do) or that it was a matter of not using him correctly. It was most likely a matter of both. Either way, Wilkerson's proved a couple things since he's been away.
He's visiting with the Rams today, so who's to say he'll even be available in the next hour or so. But if so, should he get a call from across the state of Missouri to talk about a second go-around in KC?

What would he play?
Hes not big enough to play 3-4 DE and isnt athletic enough to play LB.

Exactly..
6’2" 270. That’s no man’s land in a 3-4 unless you’re either a great athlete, or Tamba Hali.
Did he really only weigh 270 when he played here?
or did he drop weight in Tampa?
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
Agreed
Wish him all the best, but…
He doesn’t fit our defense anymore.
Besides that, I’m just a little bit annoyed will Chiefs who go on to perform better for other teams. I’m sure coaching matters, but I’m just saying…
Anyone else remember Joe Horn?
Take that back
and I thought we sorta traded Horn for Roaf in some wierd way

in Joe Horn's defense
he was 4th string at the time in a martyball offense. no wonder he couldn’t flourish.
You talk about schemes and how important they are
yet you didn’t even say where Wilkerson would play. He doesn’t have a position in the 3-4
I was actually reading earlier
that Wilkerson was in KC yesterday but its not b/c he was visiting the Chiefs it was b/c he still has a place in KC. hometown discount again? Pioli could bring him in for cheap Id put money on it
Who would he rotate with?
would he be another Alex Magee?
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
I thought the same thing when I heard he was visiting the Rams...
But the AP’ers are probably correct: He doesn’t really have a position in the 3-4. I don’t think he would be a good fit. That said I always like ole Wilk for some reason, and I wouldn’t be pissed if they brought him in.
Don't Fuccop Succop

can he block?
I’ve heard about moving every other lineman to guard, why not? what was that guy for the donkeys that did that?
doesnt make any sense to me like said above....3-4 only...if we were a multi D team...but no

KC Will Trade Derrick Johnson
Do you guys think...
Pioli will address the pass rush problem with:
A) A vetern pass specialist, stop-gap
B) A 1st round pick
C) A mid-round pick
D) Late round pick or CFA
E) Nothing with the exception of a Karate instructor
1. Suh will fall to us at 5
2. McClain will fall to us at 2a
3. The Chiefs will trade DJ and keep Dorsey
or
F) A decent NT, so that the LT has to pay more attention to Dorsey.
That’s the whole approach in a 3-4…the NT needs to be able to require the C and G, so the DE on that side can occupy the Tackle, leaving a TE or RB on your OLB pass rusher.
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
That makes...
sense. But, what able sacks coming from the strongside outside linebacker? He’s suppose to be your 2nd best pass rusher on defense. Honestly, I think it will be a late round pick or CFA. That seems to be Pioli’s method and I honestly don’t like any of these projected rookie 3-4 rush linebackers. I think they would rather have veteran players at rush linebacker.

I found this
Excellent read on the Mike Nolan 3-4 played by Denver last year and its implementation in Miami for 2010
1. 3-4 WOLB – This job requires you to rush the passer about 70 percent of downs.
2. 3-4 WILB – A banger that can plug the run and rush the passer from ILB 1 out of 3 downs.
3. 3-4 SILB – A smart, athletic player that can rush 1 out of 4 downs from ILB and collect tackles.
4. 3-4 SOLB – Needs to be good in coverage and on the TE, only rushes 50 percent.
5. 2-4 WOLB – Optional to be a hand-on-ground guy, is the primary pressure guy on pass downs.
6. 2-4 WILB – Must be very smart, and good in coverage, backing up and keeping things in front.
7. 2-4 SILB – Must be athletic enough to run with players in coverage.
8. 2-4 SOLB – Must be a dynamic pass rusher and be able to do damage from an up position.

We don't have this guy

Do you think...
Studebaker has any pass rush ability? He sure as hell didn’t show any last season, but he could have potential.

I vote no because
his stats are still a bit below average…might be an ok backup for someone, but we are needing a stud OLB to play opposite Hali, someone who can apply pressure on passing downs, but is best against the run.

Plus he's coming off a major knee injury
I think he tore his ACL towards the end of the year. Bad fit regardless. Like others have said, if they were still running a 4-3
$20 says we can make this a rumor...

I picked no...
Because the first comment up there by GenericBrand, was the first thing that went through my head too.
I don't see it as really improving our defense.
I agree that finding a place for him in the 3-4 is an issue. We have Gillberry and Magee, who both showed potential last season, and I just don’t see what his role would be. I firmly believe in bringing in as many good players, as possible, and creating competition, but not just to bring in a warm body, unless Romeo can see a role he could play in some 4-3 situations, or some hybrid 3-4, he plans to utilize sometimes. I trust our leadership, and if they see where he could help the defense, I’ll accept that, but I don’t see it, as just a dumb ass fan.
There once was a man from Nantucket......Nevermind.
I picked yes
Bringing him in at a cheap price wouldnt hurt this team. He would be providing depth and competition. He wouldnt be brought in to start, but can be used in pass rushing situations. His size (6’2 260) shouldnt be a factor to rule him out because Wallace Gilberry who is the same size (6’2 268) led the d-line with 4.5 sacks.
