Chiefs Showing Interest In More Non-First Round Safeties
The Kansas City Chiefs sure do like keeping all their options open. Once again, they're working out a couple of strong safeties in preparation for April's NFL Draft.
Who knows if this is a smoke screen and Eric Berry will really be the man with the No. 5 pick but it can't hurt to explore all your options.
First up is T.J. Ward from Oregon who recently ran the forty yard dash between 4.47-4.54 seconds. He weighed in at 5'10" an 211 pounds. He said he has put on ten pounds of muscle.
Ward has also worked out with the Rams.
Ward figures to be drafted in the middle rounds. On the high, round two is a possibility and on the low round four.
The Chiefs have also been expressing interest in William and Mary safety David Caldwell. The Patriots are also expressing interest (Surprise!) he says.
Caldwell is about the same size as Ward at 5'11" and 212 pounds but isn't projected to be drafted.

Sounds like Pioli has a solid plan this year compared to last year...
If such and such is off the board here is our battle plan… if our punter goes down we got this guy.
etc etc
Go Chiefs!!!!

I really think he is going to try to trade down
even if EB is still sitting there at #5. Either that or they are looking at all these safeties in order to compare them to EB and find out if he really is the real deal and worthy of a #5 pick.

c&c ... now there, that's it ... I love how you put that ...
it could be that’s what they’re doing …
looking at all these safeties in order to compare them to EB and find out if he really is the real deal and worthy of a #5 pick
yeah, Berry could be gone … maybe this guy is as good, or damn close to … maybe he gets Berry and this guy and the Secondary is that much better and deeper and …
… maybe he gets Spoon and this guy and … what? I can dream!
yah, I like how this year Pioli & Co are looking at everyone … this year doing the footwork, the homework … shame Pioli couldn’t be bothered to listen to the scouts left over from Carl’s term

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
I am not sure that I would listen to Carl's team
of Scouts if I had been in Pioli’s shoes. When you clean house like we needed to, you dont tiptoe around and you just get it done.

perhaps, but it didn't seem to me they got much of anything done last year at this time

Wait another 2 years before really evaluating his first draft
He may have found a diamond that just hasnt started to shine yet.

I don't think he's looking so much at trading down
as he is looking at what his other options are at the Safety position should EB not be there – this affirms in my mind that the Chiefs see S as a position of need to be filled in the draft and are covering all the bases should EB be gone at 5… Not that we’ll see a different safety picked at 5, just that we’ll see a safety picked in the draft in some round =)
With luck we’ll have a Berry good draft hehe…
I think that with the depth in this draft that he will be trying to accumulate as many picks as possible.
So if he gets the option to trade down and pick up another 2nd or 3rd or more, I think he will take it.

Agreed, that would fit his MO
I just don’t necessarily think that we’ll be able to trade out of #5 – although I wouldn’t mind it if we did – I just think he’s looking at a position of need (safety) and keeping all of his bases covered…
He's a solid
coverage guy, and I’d hope we go for him with 2b if no Berry…..

This is not a smoke screen
Even if Pioli has a hard on for Berry there is no guarantee if will be there at 5…just keeping his options open…its also not too far fetched that Pioli takes two safety in the draft.

Like I said in the thread about the Indy tackle:
It doesn’t make sense to not prepare for the possibility that a certain player won’t be there at the #5 pick. If Okung’s not there, but Berry is, maybe KC takes Berry and goes for a tackle in the second round or later. If Berry’s not there, but Okung is, maybe KC takes Okung and looks for a safety in the second round or later. Preparing for different scenarios is something that Pioli seems to wisely pursuing, because even as early as the top five, it’s uncertain who will be available or if a trade might present itself.

i still dont see
Y most people think we r picking berry. He’s a safety. We need a pass rusher or a good line backer I can tell u right now the reason why the pats were so good on d the champion years is they had an exellent line and they had great line backers. Y not get a guy in the draft that can make a diff up front.

they may do just that ... I hope so
may or may not be first pick, but yeah … NT is on the wishlist, I’m sure … and a GREAT LB like Spoon would be awesome

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
Yeah the Pats had a great line and LB
but they also had this guy named Rodney Harrison that was a pretty good safety.
Here's the reasoning:
We have the #5 pick overall. There are some upgrades we can do on offense, but it’s definitely improved over last year. On defense we’ve made 1 move, and that’s signing NT Shaun Smith. So the logic says we need to go Defense.
So you have to look at what we really need on D to compete, and 3 positions come to mind: NT, LB, S. Now factor in the fact that our pick is a top 5 pick and then look at the top 5 talent. There are 2 D-Ends, a OL, a QB (or 2) and a S. The logic points to us taking that Safety with our pick since the value equals the need.
If Eric Berry wasn’t a top 5 pick, but there was a Linebacker or a Nose Tackle that was, then I would make the argument to take said LB or NT.
I also think this is why several people who support taking EB, would also support trading out of the top 5 into the mid-first to take a LB/NT, and getting additional picks to better meet all of our needs.
Use the picks you have to fill your positions of need, and do so by taking players who are worth that pick.

That is a logical explanation
But it doesn’t change the fact that Pioli will get his guy, even if analysts believe it is a “reach.”
Many believe Pioli “reached” on Tyson Jackson last year. Many believe Pioli “reached” on Jerod Mayo in NE.
If Pioli thinks ILB is our biggest need and that Rolando McClain will be a dominant player in this league, that will be the pick. If he thinks the same about Berry, than that will be the pick.
Unless Suh somehow falls to #5, I have no doubt that Pioli will try to trade down from #5 and pick up McClain, similar to what he did with Jerod Mayo.
I thought they moved up to pick Mayo?
Reguardless, I think we are not paying enough attention to Dez Bryant here. Pioli knows what a reciever with mad skills can do for an offense, Randy Moss, and Bryant has that kind of game changing ability. Do I think he makes that move at #5? Absolutely not but if he is able to trade back several slots then I think it would be a masterfull move by this staff.

honestly, Berry is one of the top 2 talents in the draft
And safety is a huge need
And KC hasn’t made an effort to bring back Brown
And, Pioli has shown he doesn’t care what position a guy plays, he will draft the right guy to fill a need
It’s no sure thing that he would draft berry… but I could easily see it happening.
What scares me is that, if he doesn’t take Berry… he COULD reach for a NT in the first, which would be a mistake, IMO
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* KC will NOT draft a LT in the first round, and the draft WILL be heavy on defense

Yeah, if we are at #5 and Berry is on the board he MUST be the pick.
I’m with you that he is one of the top 2 talents in this draft, right behind SUH.

There's little not to like about a guy who's a dominant pass rusher AND a dominant run defender.
If you can get both those traits out of the one guy (and maybe another one like him), it can change the whole dynamic of the front 5. I can see the reach for Graham, especially if KC trades out of the #5 spot. I can see nabbing HIM with the 2a pick, if he falls that far, although for some reason, I can see Cunningham wanting this kid to play DE for him, and Detroit snatching him at the top of the 2nd, if he isn’t already gone at the bottom of the 1st by somebody else, like NE, even though their fans were mostly talking about what good can be done for the o-line with the 31st pick, in Lilja-related threads…
Suh or McCoy!!
This years draft class is stacked with quality safeties all the way to the 7th round (ie- Myrone Rolle)! Our biggest weakness last 2-3 year was the run defense, and pass rush people! A great pass rush is a huge strength! We need a game changer like a #58, or #69 to disrupt the pocket, and put pressure on the QB, which forces early throws, no throws, & bad decisions. When the QB has forever to pass they will always find someone open. We need Suh or McCoy to dominate the line!! Dorsey and Jackson aren’t the answer. They are solid bodies on the field but not game changers!!! There are plenty of good safeties this year, and I think b/c of the depth in that position Pioli is not going to get Berry..
McCoy is 4-3 DT. Not a good fit, IMO. Keeping the front 4 staffed is problematic, and KC just got done moving AWAY from
Peterson’s failure to install/retain a front 4 in KC. The 4-3 pieces are now gone. The 3-4 pieces already on-staff have just gone through a year of adjustiing to the new philosophy.
If either of Suh or McCoy fall to #5, though, the trade possibilities abound.
this is the season for the GM's and the scouts.
Sunday is when they get to have fun, but this time a year their hard at it.
I hope we can trade Page and Johnson for at least some mid round picks this year
Johnson would be a good candidate for NYG and PHI who need LB’s or STL, who like big LB’s like him, and Page would be a good candidate for Cleveland, Miami, Seattle, Chicago, and so on. and then try to get the DaJuan Morgan to DET trade actually done this year. I love Derrick Johnson as a Chief but if he ain’t gonna be a starter here trade him on draft day or the week ahead of draft day. there’s only 53 roster spots and if you want to get your RIGHT 53 then how about getting them sooner than later. PLZ.
TJ Ward is awesome
Him and berry in the same backfield would be wicked awesome lol
Man-lust aside, this is a good report to see come across my desk.
IMO, there’s Berry and Haden and then all the rest of the DBs in this draft. Chiefs can inject high football IQ and better speed without Berry or Haden, and shouldn’t paint themselves into a “Berry-or-bust” corner, which is one conjunction away from “Berry-and-bust.” And as some of the later commenters point out, just because you take Berry doesn’t mean you won’t take another DB later on. Myself, I’d overdraft DBs until my team became known as having a dominant secondary. Rather be faced with the painful decision of whom to release or trade, than in the position of working the waiver wire for warm bodies!
Berry, McCoy or trade down?
Look guys it is real simple.
Rams take Bradford at #1
Lions take Okung at #2 to protect Stafford. The injury last year to Stafford dictates this move.
Tampa Bay takes Suh at #3
Washington takes Clausen #4 because Campbell is not the answer and Clausen comes out of a Pro set offense
That leaves our Chiefs with a choice of Gerald McCoy or Eric Berry. I see us taking McCoy over Berry.
BUT
If the Lions take McCoy or Suh then that will leave Okung available. I think Washington would take Okung, then draft a QB in the second round (Maybe Tebow) and that would leave the best player left in Eric Berry. I see the Chiefs getting either Berry or McCoy. The key pick in all this is the Lions.
I can also see the Chiefs trading out of #5 if Clausen is available to a few teams. Either way it would be a good deal.
Lions take Okung at #2
While I think this is the right move for Detroit, I doubt they will do so. They will take either Suh or McCoy whichever is available pending the Rams move, or trade down. The Chiefs will not take a 4-3 DT, which is McCoy’s position. If the stars align & they have the opportunity to draft Suh, he would be switched to DE (not NT as some have posted).
Derrick Johnson
With Chicago signing a high profile Tight End recently it looks like Greg Olsen might be available for draft picks or player. Chicago needs LB’s and a trade of DJ to Chicago for Olsen might be a good trade for both teams. Olsen in his first 3 years has Tony Gonzales numbers and had a breakout year last year.
