Why Are The Chiefs Working Out A Punter?
The Kansas City Chiefs are among a handful of teams that have or are scheduled to have a private workout with Michigan punter Zoltan Mesko.
Scout.com has learned that three teams, the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots, have scheduled workouts with one of the top punters in the 2010 NFL Draft, Michigan’s Zoltan Mesko. Mesko will work out for the Chiefs on March 26th, the Eagles on March 30th and the Patriots on April 14th or 15th; all workouts will be conducted at the University of Michigan.
He has also worked out for the Jets and Colts.
Punters and kickers are always a longshot to be drafted but that's a good chunk of teams looking at a punter. But he's a four-year starter out of Michigan and increased his totals every year.
My question is why are the Chiefs using one of their limited pre-draft private workouts on a punter?
Dustin Colquitt is one of the best in the league. Maybe it's for kickoffs but it sure is a head scratcher.
One thing Todd Haley said at the 2009 NFL combine was, 'I know we have a good punter' when asked about the team.

Because he can tell the future

Aside from that I have no idea. I guess they’re just keeping their options open

The Space Emperor
Huge UM fan here. The Space Emperor is his actual nickname there. He’s a fantastic punter, but he actually didn’t even do kickoffs, so he isn’t coming in for that. Mesko is probably the top punter in college along with the kid from UGA, and will likely get drafted. I’m equally baffled why we’re working him out.

Kinda feel bad for him.
I mean come on that sucks. On possibly national television. I know I’d feel like crap and be crushed if that happened.

Looks like they are brining him in to give KC Wolf some competition.
Yeah...but we beat the donkeys like a rented mule.
no pun intended right?
I mean he did get crushed by the 50+ dudes behind him.
that vid was great FYI, rec’d for an actual lol
If Colquit pulls a hammie mid-season
they’ll know exactly who’s available as a UDFA

30 I think
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* KC will NOT draft a LT in the first round, and the draft WILL be heavy on defense

Trade?
Maybe he’s looking to trade Colquit for additional draft picks this year. With Hoffmans rep for getting the most out kickers/punters he figures he can bring about anyone in and make him into a great kicker.
No.
If he trades Colquitt that will be the end of the line. Colquitt is the best or one of the best in the league. Has a chance to be the all time or, again, one of the all time best punters the NFL has seen.

Which would you rather have...
one the all time great punters, or a Superbowl. Colquit is easily worth a 3rd rounder which in this draft will translate into a solid player in the future. My take on Pioli is he would be willing to trade anyone if he feels it will improve the team in the long run.
A third for punter?
Maybe al Davis will take him.
He did pick up the drunken pollock in rd1
if he is trade bate, I’d say another player to fill a position of need. DB, TE?

He may be worth a 3rd rounder.
But we won’t get a 3rd rounder. Getting rid of him is stupid. He is way too valuable to this team. It’d be in a way like us getting rid of Tony. I would seriously not like Pioli any longer if this happened.

Wait a sec
We all love Colquitt but you just compared him to TONY GONZALEZ.
I have a feeling you don’t actually understand football value.

Yes I did, but not in the literal sense.
More like what TDubb said. No way am I comparing him to TG in game. More of an attachment as said. Like sentimental value, he’s got a lot of it. He means more to us than anyone else and would suck and hurt if he left.

I love Colquitt as much as the next guy
but if our team wasn’t so terrible to the point where we celebrate how good our fucking punter is, nobody would even be batting an eyelash over talks of trading Colquitt.

This is fairly simple guys
Somebody recognized a talent that was going to go cheap. Pioli is taking a look to see if there is any value here that might be worth something elsewhere. Teams need solid punters, but rarely like to draft one because they are so hard to read. If Pioli gets a feeling that this guy is truely a world class punter, he will be drafted and then he turns around and trades him to Parcels, Belechick or any number of coaches from the tree he is a part of. This is something to watch because if Pioli drafts him, the guy is really good.

Campus workouts aren't limited
There’s a limit (30) on how many pre-draft visits a team can have, where they fly a player in, work him out, have him meet with the coaches, take a physical, etc.
But they’re going to Michigan to watch the punter. There’s no limit on that. They can go around to as many campuses as they want.

Perfect explination
In the case they pass on Eric Berry. They will take a punter in round 2 so passing on Berry doesn’t look so fucking retarded.

I love Colquitt and all
but the guy isn’t even the best punter in his own division. If he can be upgraded cheaply and traded for a pick, you do it. He’s a punter.
Well... that's because
the other punters in the AFC West are two of the best punters in the NFL
Lechler (Oak) and Scifers (SD) have incredible legs and great distance averages… though I don’t think either have the “inside the 20” numbers that Colquitt has.
Put Colquitt in almost any other division and he’s instantly the best.

Don't get me wrong
Colquitt is a great punter, but he’s not “untouchable” by any means. If this Mesko kid is just as good or better and the Chiefs bring him in as a UDFA or a late pick and some team wants to give up a 3rd rounder for Colquitt, not a bad deal.
by CapsLockKey on Mar 19, 2010 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions
I know the plan.
teach a big legged punter how to do kick offs, and pick up one of about a dozen accurate kickers looking for a job to hit the field goals. NFL teams want their kickers to do kick-offs – but they often end up with inaccuarate field goal kickers.
Succop
Has a good leg for kick-offs and the accuracy to hit FG’s
Perhaps they want to save him the danger of doing kick-offs – you know, having to potentially tackle someone.

ok, I am angry.
Don’t even BEGIN to try and tell me that dustin colquitt is not one of the best in the nfl….you want to point to stats to say lechler is better? ok…yes, lechler had quite the year, he set records….but….Mr Colquitt was 2 punts inside the 20 from setting the MOST IMPORTANT PUNTING RECORD….this man is a weapon, he was the REASON our D wasnt carved up for an extra 150 points last year. trade him if a pick is offered? WHY? that is like dealing tom brady in his prime….yes, this is a punter not a quarterback…but its the same concept…why trade a player smack dab in the middle of his prime when hes the best coffin corner punter in the league?
Jamaal "do it all" Charles
KC Will Trade Derrick Johnson
because with this new offense
we are never going to have to punt again!
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
Read the following in the voice of Roger Goodell.
With the fifth pick of the first round, the Kansas City Chiefs select……Zoltan Mesko — Punter from the University of Michigan.
We are going to make history with this pick!
