Are we really the team to beat this year?
Lately there have been lots of great Fanshots here on ArrowheadPride which have got me thinking, are we really the team to beat this year? Several members of the AP community have been wondering why we, all of a sudden, are getting better Free Agents. Did we get these free agents because of our GM Scott Pioli? Did we get them because of our new Offensive and Defensive Coordinators Charlie Wies and Romeo Crennel? And what impact are they going to have on the overall successfulness of the 2010 Kansas City Chiefs. After the jump I will present a few opinions on why we are going to be the team to beat next year.
1. Improved Running Game: With the addition of Thomas Jones Kansas Cities backfield just got alot better heading into 2010. The 31 year old Jones has posted 5 consecutive 1,000 yard seasons and last year scored 14 touchdowns. Kansas City didn't even score a rushing touchdown until week 10 of the 2009 season against the Oakland Raiders. Putting Thomas Jones in the mix with Jamaal Charles now gives the Chiefs a short yardage power back, someone who is going to punch the ball in at the goalline. With Jamaal Charles deceptive speed and quick movements, opposing D-Coordinators are going to have to spend extra time gameplanning for the 2010 Kansas City Chiefs.
2. New OC and DC: Last year in Todd Haley's first year as head coach, anyone who actively follows the Chiefs could tell you he was overwhelmed. He said it himself numerous times during post game interviews that he had alot on his plate. With the hiring of Charlie Weis as Offensive Coordinator and Romeo Crennel as Defensive Coordinator now Coach Haley can focus on the team as a whole. Each unit both Offensive and Defensive are going to carry the swagger of their respective Coordinator. Charlie Weis likes to employ the Erhardt-Perkins Offensive system. The Erhardt-Perkins system is know for its "smash mouth" and "using the run to set up the pass" approach, something which the Patriots won three Superbowls using. Romeo Crennel is going to keep with the Chiefs 3-4 system they transitioned into last season. Crennel is known around the league for being one of the best in the business at the 3-4 and should improve the play of Glenn Dorsey, Tyson Jackson, and Tamba Hali immediately. These two coordinators have years of success and Superbowl Championships under their belts, so dont expect any complaceny out of them for years to come.
3. The AFC West: Let me start of with this, how good did it feel to stomp Denver in Denver to end the season? To me it was a great start to 2010. We set an example that day by finally going to Invesco Field at Mile High and beating them. Jamaal Charles rushed for the Chiefs single game rushing record of 259 yards on 25 carries. We held Denver to 84 yards rushing and put together a solid team effort. My hope is that victory ignited a fire in the Chiefs front office and team. Now am I saying we are going to sweep the AFC West next year and dominate it? No, not by any means, but i look for us to be significantly improved. We can sit here all day and say if we win this or sweep that that it will do such and such. Im not looking at it that way, I want to see us competitive in our own division. I want to see Chiefs teams that hate Oakland, Denver, and San Diego. I want their fans to boo us loudly when we take the field because they know another tough game is coming their way. Denver was exposed after their impressive beginning, San Diego has lost some pieces and not added anything and got one year older. Oakland has played us tough lately because we were playing at Oakland's level, which in my opinion wasn't very good. If we play like the Chiefs that beat Denver we would have destroyed Oakland. To finish this catagory off I just have to say, if we play every game in our own conference the way we finished the year, its ours for the taking.
4. The Draft: 3 picks in the top 60. Regardless of if we trade out or keep the #5 pick we are going to have a good draft. Every member of AP has their own wishlist. Im not going to say whom I want for certain, because honestly none of us knows and will not know until draft day. That being said, this is the first time in a long time that I have been excited about a Kansas City Chief draft. These 3 picks in the top 60, depending on whom they take, are going to come in and be instant starters. This draft class is going to be in Kansas City for years to come, working as a unit and getting nothing but better under the guys I mentioned earlier in this post Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel.
5. And last but not least, the Fans: With all the excitement buzzing on AP everyday i could only imagine what K.C. will be like come this fall. After the Royals are long in the hole, K. C. is going to want football again. People are going to get excited, they are going to pack Arrowhead again and for 8 homes games in 2010 there is going to be a visiting team each week that wishes they were somewhere else. With all the additions the Chiefs made this offseason and the ones yet to come via the draft and Free Agency after the draft all I have to say is the Chiefs will be ready in 2010 and the fans will be back to support them.
That right there is why Jrcnc feels the Chiefs are going to be the team to beat next year, not only in the AFC West but in the NFL. Everyone has overlooked us for the past 3 seasons. Now im confident that opposing teams wont be overlooking us anymore. I believe good players came here because of the leadership we put in place. Let me leave you with this quote on leadership from President Dwight Eisenhower:
"Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done, because he wants to do it"

Good post man
I wouldnt quite say we are the team to beat in 2010 but I would say we will put up a fight and hopefully give us a chance to get in the playoffs this year.
thanks tomahawk44
Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....
We by no means are the team to beat.
I would love it if we are. But being realistic, there’s no way. Our defense is still week even if we build through draft it’s still gonna take a while. We won’t go down without a fight (ask pittsburgh) but we are not the team to beat.
sorry if I sound negative im just more realistic.
True and Valuable Quotes:
"Charles In Charge"
"Defense Wins Championships"
"The Battle is Won and Lost in the Trenches"
(which for the most part we are currently loosing).
im realistic as well
and your not sounding negative, I wanted AP’s opinion as a whole, because i feel we are doing great things this year and could very well be the team to beat.
Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....
Yes
We are the team to beat. With the addition of Lilja, Weigman and Jones, we are going to the superbowl. HAHAHAHAHA. Geez. You’ve got to realize this rebuilding is going to take a few seasons. This year, we will go 6-10 and that will be good progress.
i don't think we have to add just two wins a year and call that good progress
i think we have a chance of going 9-7, 10-6. we may not, but we’ll just have to see. Pioli and Belicheck’s first year in NE, they went 5-11. year two? 11-5 and a superbowl win.
I think it’s less about the players you add than about system and continuity and coaches; adding a bunch of players can often screw things up more than it fixes them. believe it or not, i think we’ve got the majority of the players in place to be successful for a year or two, and as long as we continually draft well, for a long time
Ease of Schedule
will also play a part. But i think with the moves made so far we are at least an 8-8 team. I can see a 2 game swing taking us o the playoffs. I could also see a 2 games swing showing improvement but a little less than expected. Draft picks as we all know take time to develop. A new NT. ILB, WR (slot) OL will take time. And since no one has said it ERIC BERRY LOL
Wait....Stop.....It is not hands that call us, tis desire.
we could have had more than 4 wins last year
our schedule was tough, but this year i think we have a shot.
Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....
If you look closely at our schedule....
I could optimistically see us win 10 games… but a lot of that has to do with strength of schedule… call me crazy, but you heard it here first! GO CHIEFS!!!!
but pessimistically as low as 6
if they gel all the way around, could be awesome or better … if there are issues or conflicts, things DON’T work as planned, could also go down the tubes in a hurry … sports are funny … keep a good thought, hope for the best but plan on the worst, just in case

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
Yes and
add in that San Diego lost a little this year and denver to me will have offensive trouble and the raiders…well the other team in our division and we have a pretty good shot of improving.
Wait....Stop.....It is not hands that call us, tis desire.
i think San Diego will be beatable next year
we have a real good chance at splitting with them, which i want to see us beat them sometime next year!

with all the optimism surrounding this team
i think we are, i think every other team in the league is going to have to beat us, not just walk over us like years past.
Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....
But
It was a new system at the time, they progressed as the year went on. With the exact same team and an extra year of experience in the system, it’s not unreasonable to think we could break the top 20 with the talent we have.
Now you add Smith, draft Berry, and find a ILB somewhere and have Crennel coach those suckers… We do have reason to believe that we can get somewhere around the middle of the pack without relying on too much faith.
Middle of the pack? Sure.
But the post is “Are we the team to beat?”, not “Are we now a middle of the pack team?”

Middle of the pack
Should make us the team to beat in this division though.
Blind optimism is getting a little out of hand here.
San Diego won 12 games last year, and last time I checked, they will be drafting players too. They stole a 2nd round draft pick from Seattle and will probably win 10-14 games again this year. I hate San Diego more than anyone but lets not kid ourselves that we have a better team than the Chargers. 2nd place in the AFC West with 7-9 wins will be a successful season IMO

I don't know about San Diego, they will be very competative for sure but they lost LT and without a...
….new RB to carry the load I think they will be hurting. LT was a regular season machine, churning out production, who steps up and fills in for his absence? I honestly don’t think Sproles will be the answer.
Fact. Bears eat beets. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
LT did nothing last year in the regular season either
They will draft a RB in the first 2 rounds who will be more than LT was the last couple of years. Thats why drafting RB’s is so effective, they seem to have the shallowest learning curve.

LT - 730 yards - 3.3 YPC
Somehow I’m sure they’ll have no problem replacing his “production”

Ya beat me to it. I didn'teven look at the YPC.... Ouch.
Fact. Bears eat beets. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
I wouldn't say "nothing", he had 730 yards and 12 TDs in 14 games.
Fact. Bears eat beets. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
TD's are a little overinflated.
I don’t know how many times I saw SD be first and goal at the 1 and they gave him the ball 4 straight times before he finally punched it in. Had they gave it to Hester, he could have scored on 1st down, but they kept trying to get LT in the endzone to try to get him going.

I will not listen to your canadian logic Craig.
I still don’t think Sproles is the answer….. now Javid Best on the other hand.
Fact. Bears eat beets. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
why is it blind?
even announcers all over NFLN and ESPN have tabbed the Chiefs as the team to beat next year. Now i understand what your saying and yes the Chargers will probably win more games than us, but there is no reason to believe that we cant be the team to beat.
Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....
rec'd and great writeup
could be the team to beat, we shall see … but calling us that before the draft might be a TINY bit premature … Denver has a few additions, and still the draft coming up and anything can happen …
but yeah, sure is nice to dream

nope
team to beat is a team everyone thinks is going to be solid.. We don’t qualify
The newest addition to the Eric Berry fanclub
NE went from 5-11 to 11-5 in the Superbowl once they got Crennel
we were solid last year at times, and will only continue to build on that.

Wow
No. 4-12 to the team to beat? I think you’re setting yourself up for a big disappointment. The D isnt improved aside from Crennel and the rookies that they draft. 8-8 is going to be a solid year from this team. Remember there are sooo many holes left on D and your boy Berry isn’t going to solve all of them.

Offense is better, we may score more points a game.
But boy oh boy our defense sure makes me wince right now.
I do believe our coaching staff & maturity of our younger players will improve our D. That being said, we are a NT, SS & quality ILB away . We need these 3 positions filled by the draft & they all need to be our starters. A very tall order to fill.
I love your enthusiasm & I agree with you about our division. If we can capitalize on all the tangibles while improving each game this year. Yeah… I’ll drink me some of that jcrnc Kool-aid.
Go Chiefs
Scott Pioli's star will shine in 2010.
Win or lose, the Chiefs scare the bejesus of all opponents in 2010
our defense could very easily give each game away
but with our Offensive moves through FA and a few solid Defensive pickups we could do this thing! I love your signature line, that was what i was aiming for, are we going to be the team to beat next year, are we going to scare these teams win or lose.
Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....
"Team to beat" might be a little much,
But KC is definitely setting themselves up to be a sleeper team that can squeeze into the playoffs.
Our 2008 draft class is coming into their 3rd year, and we’ve seen constant improvement from the key picks there, namely Dorsey, Albert, Flowers and Charles. They haven’t hit their ceiling yet, and we WILL see better production from them this year.
T-Jax was looking more comfortable towards the end of 2009. Hopefully a strong off season training program will advance his development and have him ready to go come July. He has to have a strong 2nd year for us to succeed.
The addition of Romeo and Charlie instantly bumped this team into a much, much better position than what we ended the 2009 season with.
The 2010 FA period has shored up out offense so that if we were to start with what we have today, we’d be in position to field a top 10 offense. A full year of Charles starting will be huge. Cassel working through the off season with Haley and Weis to get a good understanding of the play book, and working on his mechanics will do wonders for his development.
The OL should do a much better job of giving Cassel time and keeping him upright, so I expect a good year from him. This is a do or die year for him and he knows it.
Since our offense is good to go (with the exception of maybe 1 WR), I see a very defensive heavy draft plan. S, LB, NT. Get 3 of those that can start and we’re going to field a team that will look absolutely nothing like what we started with in 2009.
Good thoughts jrcnc. rec’d.

Personally i think we are most definately the team to beat in the AFC west
I think the denver game got the year off to a good start and gave us some very important momentum going into the offseason. I think the Crennel and Wies signings gave Pioli a lot of credibility with the free agent market, last season the free agents were not even looking the chiefs way(i think there were even reports of agents blackballing the chiefs). Charlie and RAC’s arrival let them all know The Don is serious about winning games NOW.
For a team to make a turn around like 4-12 to 10+ wins it takes a perfect storm of players, coaching, schedule and the other teams in the division and i believe with a solid draft all those pieces will be in place for the chiefs to make some serious noise in the AFC west
I cant wait to see the NEW ARROWHEAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chiefs will be competing for a division title in 2010
and heres to hoping we get that perfect storm!
I want it, i want us to be the ones everyone is scared of!

Nice post Jrcnc, it's fun to read these kind of "Pick-me-up" posts from time to time.
I won’t go crazy with my prodictions….. not just yet anyway. 10 wins is possible but so is 6. So many variables go into a winning or losing season, a few breaks here and some good draft picks there and you never know.
Btw, thank you for the change of pace, especially when tension is running full throttle as the draft approaches.

no problem BRC thanks for reading it!
i toss stuff around like this all the time with the family and fellow Chiefs fans, thought i would give it a shot here at my second home AP. I know the other side of the coin is bad and people are going to smash me for this, which is okay i value everyone’s opinion, i just want to see how many other people feel good about the Chiefs like I do.

nice post jrcnc… Love the optimism! Team to beat might be a little much, but they will certainly be improved… 9 and 7 (with berry). I still think you gotta knock off the king of the division before everybody fears you, and it’s still san diego, although were gaining on them.

While we all see things happening that we like
this sort of thinking is premature. We’re still a 4-12 team. The way to become the team to beat is to show up next year week in and week out. Each week, we’ll quite simply be the team for our opponent to beat. Once we put in a strong showing and demonstrate that we have what it takes on a consistent basis, then let’s talk.
I just think that we’ve all been beat up emotionally as fans for getting ahead of ourselves far too often. Let’s just take it one day at a time, shall we?

Thanks for saying what I’ve come to think might be possible this year…for some reason I’m still fighting this lingering doubt that Carl Peterson is going to come back and confuse Pioli into choosing a sucky draft… ugh. It’s just been so long since the Chiefs have been great that I’m gonna have a hard time believing they are great until after they win the AFC West and make the playoffs this fall.
Chiefs fans will be pleasantly surprised with this year’s results.

Good post, man. Love the optimism, but my expectations are tempered. Don’t think we’re the team to beat in the NFL just yet — we’re a couple years removed from that. But I DO believe we’ll emerge as the team to beat in the AFC West.
And so it has been predicted.

KC will look more competitive, overall, on paper.
With or without Berry, they should be more competitive in the secondary, with more speed and better ball skills, overall.
Made some progress on OL, even if only incrementally, with an established, fairly versatile threat in Jamaal Charles, makes them more competitive than the team they fielded last September.
Seems like other teams are going bigger, and KC’s going quicker. E-P offense is what some have said, above, but Lilja, in particular, argues for Z-B.
Not sure how much better the STARTERS will be. Perhaps nothing to catch anyone’s eye, but definitely a team that’s starting to look fairly deep in decent players with a good amount of playing time under their belts.
With all the “gotta get impact starters in the draft1111” talk, KC will be starting fewer rookies than in either of the past two seasons. That alone takes them a step closer to being competitive.
h...what are you saying that for?? LOL .. you have been here long enough to know the proper response to you
“kc will look more competitive, overall, on paper” comment deserves the typical response
“well hopefully we’ll be playing paper football then”.
Hold up your fingers, I’ll kick a field goal.

Heh. The whole theme was taking all the news with a grain of salt.
And the point is, you can’t just look at the depth chart and say “No playin’ time. No experience. No production.” At least not in nearly as many places. But yeah, I should’ve avoided the buzz phrase. Simple brain rot.
I think you latched on to the fluff, though, and missed what might’ve been worthy of discussion and debate E-P and Z-B a little bit. The highest-priced FA was not your typical E-P pickup, unless you’re maybe thinking C for Lilja.
We may be
Hopefully they will realize we are the team to beat after we beat them.
"It aint what happens it's how you react to it that makes all the difference." I'm sure it was somebody wiser than me that said it first. I coach girls softball and use that line all the time.
A young team like KC will only get better
We have several starters in key positions going into their third season in the NFL…they “should” be entering their primes this year. We have some solid free agent additions, and we should improve the starters at 2-3 positions through the draft.
I think we will probably be the favorite to finish 2nd in the AFC West this year, and that’s understandable. San Diego will be the team to beat, until we can actually overtake them. They still have the superior QB & WR crew, though I think they will be very vunerable this season because of their running game and Defense. I for one can’t wait for the head-to-head matchups in 2010.
Predictions:
This year will be better
Excellent Post
Jrcnc I’m with you and rec’d. I know some would rather look at the negative and hope they are wrong, but I always look at the best possibility and expect it. Sets me up for disappointment, but I’d rather be positive.
I agree with all you said and would like to see you add a #6. Improved Current Player Motivation. The current players we have stuck it out and played with passion last season. You know that they can feel the surge coming, the excitement building, the tides turning. I believe that they are entering this season with the sense of success, knowing that they could win the Division. The holes are being filled in the coaching and player weaknesses. The intangibles of confidence and motivation are huge.
Finally, you used one of my favorite quotes at the end. I’ve lived by it for years! Thanks.
Thanks Tx
I also can see the improved motivation in the players, guys like Dorsey and Page are tweeting away at how happy they are at our moves so far. I understood that people would look at some of this in a negative way, especially the title but i believe that next year we are going to be the team to beat. This team isnt going to come out and lay down and die like before, they are going to be prepared and punch other teams in the mouth. Good days are ahead for the Kansas City Chiefs.

I’m lovin the energy man…….I am like you in that I feel that something special is brewing in KC. I’m not sure if others will view the Chiefs as the team to beat next year. I actually hope they don’t. I want them to all look past their match against us to prepare for a “more worthy opponent”. That will make the victories all the better when we run the ball right down their throats.
The offseason moves and intense scouting of “middle-tier” players has really led me to believe in Pioli’s systematic approach to building a dynasty. You keep the cash in your pocket and improve incrementally. When you get the system in place, you can splurge here and there as needed cause you have the capital ready.
The other teams in the AFC West have been making some questionable moves in my opinion and I applaud their efforts. I’ll be walking around with a big grin on my face next season, cause I see it coming right now. Superbowl? Not necessarily next year. But, we are improving, and it will show next season. Oh yeah………rec’d.

Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....
I want what you want...Chiefs being the team to beat in the AFC West...
but I just have a irk feeling in my stomach that Denver will be the team to beat next year…
Denver?
yea they have made a few moves but why do you get that feeling?

Love the optimism, but we are not the team to beat.
We will be vastly improved in 2010, but their is a reason why we have been overlooked the past three seasons. The reason is 10-38.
and we can use that to our advantage!
with the pieces we have put into place so far this offseason, after we begin the season knocking the spit out of a few teams others will have to take notice and realize we are going to be the team to beat!

j-man you may be right.....today
and into Sep, but I have a feeling the Chiefs are going to shake up the West and knock the Chargers off their high pedestal. I believe we will be very dangerous and have a shot at taking the West and at the very least, ending the season with a winning record.
very ture
TX Chiefan but i need to see to beleave it

From a Pats fan's perspective...
…I would rank the AFC West:
1. Chargers
2. Broncos
3. Chiefs
4. Raiders
I can’t justify ranking you above the Broncos and calling you the team to beat because you DID have the 5th worst record in the NFL last season. However, you have absolutely been making strides and it wouldn’t surprise me to see an 8-8 season from you guys.
fair
but SD is in troble i think more so after 10

give us 3 yrs
and we might have a real playoff team
"It doesn't matter what you do in Life only that you do it the best you can. "
this team
has potential, but more needs to be done defensively before we can expect a big turnaround. sure we’ve improved, and my years of watching the afc west i know that the leader can change from a year to year basis, but i think it will take more then this offseason to turn it around. hopefully im wrong
Maybe so.
Ask me two games into the season. Ill have a good idea by then. So far I like our chances to surprise people though. I’m talking like 8-8. That actually would be surprising for us.
Hi. My big board for KC's first rounder is:
1. Russell Okung, OT
2. Eric Berry, S
3. Rolondo McClain, ILB
4. Brian Bulaga, OT
5. Dan Williams, NT
I agree with the rest... "(S)leeper team" was the term used, right around the time the #5 pick became the current topic, ...
… and they were more or less forced to give up a few words KC’s way.
I hate to think Shaun Smith is the end of it, but they’re better at the PON, already. I hate to think Ryan Lilja is the end of it, but they’re better on the O-front, already.
Overall, a team on its way to respectability who might finish on top on the scoreboard, right when you least expect it. “Sleeper” or “dark horse” might describe the team that’s being put together, a team that may be greater than the sum of its parts, like some Pittsburgh teams we’ve seen, recently, and there IS great respect for the PIT way of doing things. Bring your lunchbucket, but leave your attitude at the door.
Anyhoo,
I don't worry about A F C west
I think we can match up to any team in the A F C west . I want to beat the COLTS so bad .They are the team that we will measure how good we have got . will not mean a thing if we win the Division and lose the first game in the playoffs .

I want to beat the Colts as well
I will be at that game in Indy because the Mrs. is a Colts fan. We can beat them at their new dome home and show everyone!
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
Yup. Plus any up-and-comers who play tough in '10.
You want to face the best and BEAT the best. (And beat everybody else, too!)
In the same boat
My wife was a bears fan we have been married for 14 years . Last season she broke down and went to the STEELERS game with me . She did not speak to me for 3 days and when she did she asked me if she could become a chiefs fan and go to the games with me . Now we are a true chiefs family and she has a tattoo just like mine .
