Chiefs Free Agency Moves Are So Good Even Jason Whitlock Is Impressed
Well, the Kansas City Chiefs have really outdone themselves now. With the word "value" being thrown around at all their free agency moves -- particularly that of Thomas Jones and Ryan Lilja -- even Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star is impressed.
The signing of former Indianapolis guard Ryan Lilja was the final straw for me. Pioli is starting to live up to his reputation.
Whitlock likens the Lilja signing to a Carl Peterson free agent coup Dan Saleaumua.
I don’t want to overstate this, but without Saleaumua, Thomas wouldn’t be in the Hall of Fame today. People outside of Kansas City probably don’t even remember Big Dan. That’s fine. We do.
Lilja is a Dan Saleaumua on the offensive side. Lilja’s signing means next to nothing around the league. After five productive seasons, the Colts let Lilja walk because they mistakenly believe they need a 310-pounder at guard to run the ball more effectively. Fine. Their mistake is our gain.
I think the last time we read something like this from Haley and Pioli's biggest critic is the first day the GM was hired.

Dude was crazy cool. I was just a young Chiefs fan when I saw him on the field. Can some of the “older folks” give us a good writeup on what he was like at the time, what you saw, etc?

Watching the 2009-2010 Chiefs 12 hours ahead of you (in Taipei, Taiwan).
Twittering my every move. Don't act like you're not even slightly interested.
From an Old dude
Dan Saleaumua was definitely the right “53”.I believe Pioli & Haley would have jumped on him in a second.Tough, smart, played hurt, never complained & a real football guy.
John Soellner
Dan was a Stud DT! If I remember correctly he was woking as a concrete worker when he got the call from the Chiefs!
So you think you are so important that no one can replace you? Put your finger in a bucket of water and pull it out. Does it leave a hole? Nope, just some ripples that eventually calm themselves!

Chiefs football has been pretty unenjoyable since Martyball ended, but I truly believe Pioli and Haley can not only bring KC back up to the level of the Martyball era, but surpass it by winning a lot of playoff games.

The good part was that he actually made the playoffs almost every year
And he won more playoff games in KC than every KC coach since him…combined.

Are you saying that you think he won zero playoff games in KC?
He won three, by my recollection, which is a little better than the combined zero won by all KC coaches since him.

certainly not burnt O
just saying that I thought we were good enough to go farther and it seemed that he simply gave away playoff games with clearly stupid play calling at times.
For example:
Question: who runs up the gut (not a draw play) on third and long in a playoff game?
Answer: Marty S.
Other than that kind of play calling at critical times in the playoffs (which incidentally he also did in SD), Marty was a great coach…one of the best of all time in the NFL IMHO.

gifted, I don't think you can "blame" Marty for that ... and certainly not EVERY year
remember, at THAT level, it’s not even always about being BEST but about being LUCKIEST in a way … granted that one year he should never have kept Grbac over Gannon, but before that with Montana we went to the AFC Champ … you can’t blame Marty that we ran into a Dynasty at the height of their run (Nuffalo) nor can you blame him that Montana got his lights put out so hard it registered as a small earthquake on the West Coast

lotta people think Marty's "style" was always "good but not good enough"
that is, his smashmouth offense coupled with kickass defense and overall consdervative approach was one “not designed to win at the next level”… yanno what? you have to GET to that level before you can WIN …
so, given a CHOICE, do you want kickass in the playoffs just about every year? or would you prefer win the SB every 5 or 9 years and who knows what in between? personally, get me TO the playoffs time after time, I’m willing to take my chances …

It may be blasphemy to some around here but it seemed to me for Marty it was a combination of being out-coached and choking in the playoffs. That being said, I liked Marty and was happy as hell he was here. Those were fun seasons to watch.

I was hangin around by the fence talking to some Cleveland guys. Of course I asked about Marty and they said that he’d get us to the playoffs, but no farther. They turned out to be correct.

I remember big Dan
It was back a few years after I had moved to Kansas and I first became a fan of the Chiefs. He hit the NFL about the time I graduated from College.
I was so impressed when big Dan joined the team. You noticed his absence as soon as he stepped off the field. It was A M A Z I N G how much difference the big guy made in the middle. Funny thing is he wasn’t that big by today’s standards…only 6’ 315lbs, but he just played big. The thing about him was that he just played mean. He was an animal.
Data: 28 sacks and 3 INT’s in 8 seasons on KC’s DL. No tackle data available on NFL.com before 2001.

Loved DannySal
Could say the same thing about Mike Maslowski. He never got a lot of recognition, but during the Vermeil years, our defense went from “good enough/middle-of-the-pack” to complete shit whenever he got injured.
My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:
1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.
Dan is the perfect example
why people shouldn’t rule out DT’s for the 3-4 NT position just because their not 6’6" 350 lbs.

I disagree....
Todays NFL is a way different place than the NFL Saleamua played…and also its a different defensive system. The trenches have gotten alot bigger across the board.
Saleamua was suppose to penetrate and wreak havoc…..a crennel 3-4 will require a NT to eat up 2 blockers at least consistently and not give any ground….and to do that you need size.
This is not taking away from old sal…he was great what he did…I just think we are looking for a different skillset with this D. Not all 3-4’s are run the same. If we needed penetration and havok…..I think you would have seen Dorsey tried at NT instead of end.
OL's have continued to get bigger, true, but
if size was everything, why scout players? Why have the combine? Why have workouts? Why watch tape? Lets just measure them and draft.
by VermeilLikesToCry on Mar 18, 2010 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions
Also
Dan played at 6’0", 305 lbs. Now, people rule out people who are 6’3" 320 lbs, based on pre-conceived bias. While in GENERAL you might want a little larger, it’s not a steadfast rule. If so, we’d never have seen Priest Holmes, Emmit Smith, etc, etc

sorry about the "read" comment
But it’s pretty clear that I was making a point about writing people off about their size and expectations of a certain position. It holds true for all positions, e.g. Drew Brees, Wes Welker, etc etc
It’s obvious you have no interest what people say, but rather just to argue by attempting to poke holes in what they say (or infer things they didn’t say) rather than addressing the meat of their statement.

which apparantly means it’s “open season” to make snide remarks about Whitlock … and I really don’t get that … I don’t understand why y’all are so down on the guy for expressing his opinions (and doing it so well that he’s won national awards for the KC Star along the way)
I suppose you thought Whitlock was out of line when he expressed the opinion that what Michael Vick did was inhumane, wrong, classess and stupid
maybe you disagreed when Whitlock slammed the Gangsta Rap that adversely affects so many kids across our country
or you might have felt it was wrong when Whitlock spoke out against Don Imus and his racially insensitive on-air remarks

Hypocrite.
My opinion of Whitlock is based on years of him writing stuff he obviously knows is false and doesn’t believe just to get a rise out of people to increase readership. I understand that he’s not a journalist, just an opinion piece writer, but he’s horrible at that too. He’s entirely dishonest and only cares about the bottom line: readership. He spreads lies to do it. He’s a horrible writer b/c he feels he can’t get readership without being inflammatory and deceitful. Hard to respect someone that desperate.

Agreed
I would disagree, though, on the part about being horrible at being an opinion piece writer. He does that well, and people read his articles for that reason. I just think taking him as more than that is silly. Also, wasting this much time talking about him is kinda bad too.
Guess it depends on your expectation of an opinion writer
I expect some level of integrity and honesty rather than just pure entertainment.
I’d agree with you if more people realized it’s as real as the WWE, but some people don’t and take such things as truth, so there’s some level of responsibility with being an opinion writer, imho

I've done a good deal of Pioli bashing myself over the last year, and haven't had to go out of my way to find things I disagree with
what I see Pioli doing now is much better than what (little) I saw him do a year ago … does that in and of itself make ME a hypocrite? because if so, then we honestly have a LOT of hypocrites on this site, I’m only one of many who’ve been critical of what Pioli did a year ago

none of that is about the Chiefs
I just disagree with the guy when he calls Pioli names like Egoli and rails on Haley for being “arrogant” or “yells too much” or other stupid things. Because I think he is just making up BS for personal reasons which are that he somehow feels slighted that they don’t give a damn what he thinks or that he isn’t allowed on a certain floor. So, if anyone has a big ego it is Whitlock. I don’t want him or his opinion infringing on the mgmt of the Chiefs because he would be horrible. Jeff George?

Maybe if Whitlock would of taken the initiative and talked to Haley a year ago instead of a month ago he would of had a clue.
Instead he was more concerned with being a buddy to the players than reporting the facts..
Whitlock=Skip Bayless.
They both speak their mind, and I disagree with both of them about 80% of the time. But, I admire that they do have the courage to say what isn’t politically correct or popular. It’s the controversy they stir up, that makes them a good living doing what they do. It also doesn’t necessarily make them bad people, although I’m sure they get a helluva lot more hate mail than love letters.
There once was a man from Nantucket......Nevermind.
People hate him

I actually used to read him
but anymore I have no time to waste on him. I don’t think he has anything of worth to say about the Chiefs anymore because he’s gone too far down the irrational personal path to where his opinion is too clouded to mean anything.
