Why? I'll tell you why!

From the FanPosts  -Joel

So the question has been tossed around here a lot in the last week or two.  Why?  Why are we getting these quality free agents at bargain bin prices?  Why are these veteran players that have the chance to play for a contender choosing the rebuilding 4-12 Chiefs?  A lot of us have been pondering this, I’m sure.  Joel himself mentioned earlier that he’s "not sure what the case is, but [he] likes it".

I’m not going to pretend to have any special insight to this topic, and my guess is as good as anyone’s, but my thoughts and speculation as to why we’re quietly drawing in solid players at bargain prices is explained after the jump.  BTW, get a cup of coffee or something, it's kind of a long post :)

Star-divide

Earlier this week the NFL Network was replaying a "Classic Game" from the 2003 season.  It was a phenomenal match between the Patriots and Colts.  At one point the Pats were up 31-10 in the 3rd quarter, but the Colts came roaring back with three straight TD passes from Peyton Manning to tie the game up with about 10 minutes left to play.  On the Pats next possession, Brady threw a TD, putting them up 38-31 with about 8 minutes left.

The Colts ended up making it into field goal range and took their chances with kicking a field goal in the hopes of getting the ball back and scoring a TD (at this point there was about 3:30 left in the game).  It ended up being a smart gamble because they forced a 3 and out on Brady and the Pats and got Peyton back on the field with 2:57 to go.  Peyton marched the ball down the field and got the Colts set up with a 1st and goal from the 2 yard line.  And guess what happens?  The Patriots’ defense stuffed them.  Edgerin James got stuffed.  4 tries and they were denied.  Totally awesome game, and I agree with NFLN dubbing it a "Classic Game".

Ok, so at this point you’re probably wondering why I brought this up.  Well, it has to do with the most recent additions to the Chiefs coaching staff.  Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis.  They were the Patriots’ coordinators for that game, and that’s actually why I stopped flipping through channels and watched it.  I thought it would be nice to get a preview of what the Chiefs will look like over the next few seasons, and I have to tell you guys that if that is what is coming to the Chiefs, then how could players not want to come here?  In that specific game the Patriots really flexed their muscles by offensively outscoring the Colts badly through three quarters, and then defensively stuffing them at the goal when the game was on the line.

It’s no secret that each and every player in the NFL knows who Crennel and Weis are.  The vets have watched tape of the teams that they’ve coached.  The young bloods that are devoting their future to the NFL saw what they did from 2001-2004.  These players know that they are the real deal when it comes to coaching teams.  They get the desired results.  In my opinion though, that’s only part of why free agents are coming here for less.  There’s another member of the Chiefs organization that is playing a big part in this.

None other than the Don himself, Scott Pioli is another big reason why quality free agents are making the choice to sign with us.  No doubt players have heard of Pioli, but I doubt most of them are as aware of his resume as they are of our coordinators.  Pioli is believed by almost everyone here at AP to be a great football mind.  He’s the mastermind, the guy that is going to bring Arrowhead out of the ashes, and create a winner here… eventually.  Right?  Isn’t that what we all think?  We keep saying that in 2-3 years we’ll be knocking on the door of a Super Bowl, with a Pioli built team crushing every other team in the way.  Ok.  Yay.  We all believe that and have faith in Pioli getting us there.  But how does that translate to Pioli selling it to free agents?

Check out this quote from Bill Belichick the day that Pioli was announced the new GM of the Chiefs:

"To sum up in words everything Scott Pioli has meant to this organization and to me personally would be difficult, if not impossible. From the day I met him, he has demonstrated a passion for football and respect for the game that is second to none. It has been extremely gratifying for me to follow Scott's career ascension from the bottom of the totem pole in Cleveland to his place as a pillar of championship teams in New England. Now with the opportunity to steer his own ship and a vision of building a winner, there is no more capable, hardworking, loyal, team-oriented person than Scott Pioli. On a personal level, the Belichick-Pioli bond runs far deeper than our workplace, as we and our families have shared countless memories away from football. Working side by side with one of my best friends for almost two decades is special enough in itself. But to help each other achieve success beyond our dreams is a blessing and something I will always remember and appreciate."

Interesting stuff, huh?  A guy that is credited with building the dynasty of the decade just gave a lot of credit to Pioli.  Okay, so how does that translate into getting free agents here?  Imagine for a second that you’re Thomas Jones.  You are coming off a career year and feel that you have some more to contribute to help a team win.  The Chiefs call you for an interview, and you arrive at their offices (Arrowhead).  You’re called into an office in a facility that is locked down like Fort Knox.  Seriously, the media is no where to be seen, and the only people allowed on this floor of the building are the main coaches and people directly related to managing the team.  The people interviewing you are Todd Haley, Scott Pioli and Charlie Weis.

Throughout the interview Pioli keeps saying things like "team first", "winners" and "hard work" as he taps his fingers on the table.  Three Championship rings sit on that hand.  Weis explains that he’s planning to build an offense that exhibits the talent of his running backs… mainly an up and comer in Jamaal Charles, and you, if you decide to join, and flashes his three rings.  Haley says he’s just there for the ride. Lol, just kidding.  Honestly, Haley is the wild card.  He has an impressive resume for sure, but is lacking the trophies.  Haley adds the hunger to the coaching staff to keep on wanting to win.  He’s surrounded with staff members to help him achieve that, but he has to want it the most and translate that want to the rest of the team.  He has to lead, and everything about him says that he will not stop until he joins his colleagues as champions.

No doubt Jones (and the others) was impressed with what he saw when he visited.  The reputation that is pouring out of Arrowhead is no longer one of mediocrity and failure.  The culture has changed folks. The standard that is defining Arrowhead now is one of team work.  And success.  And professionalism.  We may not have the victories yet, but they are fast approaching, and will be upon us sooner rather than later in my opinion.  We keep saying there’s a 2-3 year plan.  I think it might be sooner than that.

Look at Pioli’s first year in New England:  In 2000 the Patriots were lead by Belichick and Weis (no Crennel), and finished 5-11, dead last in the AFC East.  In 2001 they added Crennel and had a key draft, and went 11-5 and won the Super Bowl, and sustained a dynasty that dominated that decade.  Pioli doesn’t plan on contending in 2-3 years.  He’s building a team to try to win now… and he’s obviously doing a good job selling it to the free agents that he’s bringing in.

So there it is.  The Chiefs are bringing in quality players for cheap because they’re selling something better than a job opening.  In my opinion, without a doubt, they are selling themselves as real contenders.  Right now.  Not in 2-3 years, but right now.  And the players are buying it.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Well written, rec!

Hopefully, you’re right…

I share your optimistic view, and couldn’t be happier about the folks “steering the ship” here in KC.

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

Thanks.

My optimism has been slowly building over the last few months. The impressive win at Denver, the addition of Weis and Crennel, and now the FA period. I’m expecting no less than an 8-8 season at this point. The Chiefs are, IMO the front runners to be the biggest sleeper team in the NFL in 2010.

Why are we getting these quality free agents at bargain bin prices?

We got Jones at about market value for an old (32) running back…and we signed a lineman that failed a physical, was cut, and is said to be a liability in the running game for less than the backup that just left….other than that we got a NT that is on like his 8th team in 7 years, a WR that was has limited production as a 4th or 5th WR and a 37 year old center.

I think perhaps your overstating these “quality” FA’s and their “bargain” prices.

wow Chicks_love_chiefs

way to shoot down the post lmao. First off Thomas Jones is 31 :P, and just came off a 1400 yrd year with 10+ TD’s.
The lineman that failed the physical happened to play on a two time super bowl attending team (one of which they won) so the physical could mean nothin less than sh*t to me, and is “said to be a liability” is just what people are “saying”. Joseph Addai and Donald Brown didnt do too horrible behind him, and they arent half the back JC is…
the NT has played with Crennel in his GOOD years, and I think Crennel has a way of bringing the best out of lineman.
Urban is a decent receiver, and with Haley and Weis helping him, he could be a good slot. But I too am iffy on him
The Center… well he is just nasty and we only want him for this one year to groom another center im sure, but he can still get the job done.
IMO of course

Winning isnt a matter of life and death, its more important than that.

by Pollard49 on Mar 17, 2010 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Well I agree with you...

But TJ will be 32 when the season starts…Addai and Brown teamed up for the worst running game in the league with the sesond worst yards per run in the league…I don’t know how well they did behind him. Yes the failed physical is perhaps questionable but I doubt Pollian (sp) is just fucking with the poor guy…

Where are the “bargains?” I think getting TJ was a good move but I don’t think I’d call it a “bargain” considering his age, if we would have paid more we would have overpaid IMO. (Remember the guy had virtualy no other intrest from other teams) The cut lineman from the SB team might be a bargain but I have doubts….just because the Texans waaay overpaid for Smith doesn’t make this guy a bargain. Theres no way you can call a guy that played in the UFL (the NT) last year a bargain no matter what they paid. I’m not sure you can call a 37 year old center, or a 5th WR bargains either.

No saying Pioli has done a horrid job. He hasn’t (considering the weak UFA’s) but I’m not blown away by the amazing talent at discount prices as some are.

Pioli addressed the needs in a very capable way

we could draft all the spots he got guys for and neglected the spots he didn’t.

Now we can take Bryant if Pioli wants too.
We can grab Okung if he falls.
Pretty much anything Pioli feels unfinished he could Double Down on.

Through the draft? Er uhh...from the inside out?

I give up what is it? ha. I don’t think Pioli is doing a bad job this offseason by any means. I’m really only questioning the “quality FA’s at bargain prices”

I realize Pioli didn’t have much to work with, as far a UFA’s go…And all in all he did a pretty good guy getting guys at positions of need. How much these guys will help is another matter but he did bring in some fresh warm bodies, and opened his options for the draft. I’m also on record saying that the Chiefs have probably had the best offseason considering the coaching changes. So don’t think I’m just bashing Pioli just to be a douche.

even if you only consider chambers and jones quality,

i would still say we did very well to get them as cheep as we did. true both are getting older but considering their performances last season they could have demanded more and received it from someone else. now you look at the linemen we’ve brought in. all of them are upgrades over our current players. maybe not quality but solid upgrades and we didn’t bust the bank for them as other teams have (texans). i’d say all in all we’ve brought in quality FAs for bargain prices. but that’s my opinion.

Lilja WAS considered to be the/a weak link in the o-line last season, according to reports on or near the date of his release.

And I don’t know if you caught the NFL re-broadcast of that Jets game, but the word went out in the opposing defense when Jones sat and Shonn Green came onto the field. “WRAP UP!” “#23’s comin’ in!!!” “WRAP UP!!!”

Clearly Jones was the steady journeyman and Green was the guy who instilled fear.

I’m not sayin’ Jones is bad, but neither is chicks_love_chiefs. Just sayin’ it’s a bit early to buy plane tickets ‘n’ order champagne.

For mental toughness and team-first attitude, KC got a solid deal, but for an extra hundred K or so, the Jets got a serious upgrade in terms of receiving skills and, according to some, pass-protection.

What I like about both the signings is bringing in players who know what it’s like to be on a winner, and who know how to conduct themselves in a hard-nosed and professional manner.

I think there’s SOME truth to KC being suddenly more attractive, and I think the word IS getting out there amongst the veterans that if you do your damn job, Haley won’t be on your case, and he’ll do his best to protect your body, whether you like it or not.

I'm not going all crazy over most of the FA's

but the Jones and Lilja signings were pretty big deals. I don’t know the details of the Colts’ physical, but given Haley’s ass-kicking conditioning program, I’d bet we have a pretty tough physical evaluation that Lilja passed…and Lilja is better than Wade Smith. I mean come on, Smith was a backup for the Chiefs and Lilja was a starter for the Colts.

What I like about the Lilja signing...

is that the Colts line was the best pass protecting O-line in the league. He can bring some swagger to this unit that we’ve been missing. I’m really excited about the Chiefs offense right now for the first time in 5 years or so.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Mar 17, 2010 9:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Yardage from last year(s) is just that. It's as much or more a product of OL and effective passing, as anything else.

And the BEST teams somehow find a way to move on to somebody new when the older guy hits the wall.

I don’t think Jones has hit the wall, but it’s entirely possible that the same kind of success will be elusive, unless Pioli’s work on the OL actually pans out. Haven’t seen but a couple games’ worth of improved OL play, and usually end up scratchin’ my head at what Pioli does, and his timing. That said, a year + since he’s come and I see pretty much ALL position groups drawing closer to critical mass. Anybody’s guess how close they actually are. Pioli has history of getting there all unexpected-like, just by upgrading where and when he can, with no clear end in sight, but MY history of watchin’ KC GMs is “Huh?”

Still a bargain when you look at

LDT getting signed for more money in NY, when he had just over 700 yards rushing last year, comapred to Jones’ 1400. Jones has less tread on his tires and will contribute more than LDT next year.
Lilja apparently didn’t fail our physical.
That NT is much better than we currently have on our roster.
Urban will probably fill a role, and be glad to do so.
Weigman vs. Nighswanger…who wins that battle.

Granted, some of these guys are stop-gaps, but the baddass rookies we draft will learn behind some of the craftiest vets in the game.

He had a stint

he played for Detroit and Cincy as well last year…He did play well under Crennel and he is excited, but the point I was making above is we will draft the answers to our problems…After we draft the answers, knowing they will be long term answers, let them sit and learn, rather than throw them in the fire in week one. Journeyman vets are better in week 1 than rookies…Also, if nothing else, we will have depth, so we can post the best record, and attract every free agent we need the next year. The salary cap will be back and Pioli knows it, so build the right 53 from the bottom up.

From the bottom up and from the top down.

But I think the bottom up stuff is the toughest to quantify, other than to count the large number of guys in and out the revolving door. We’ll see what happens when everybody thinks we’re “close,” and if you’re happy with all the faces STILL comin’ and goin’, as TODAY’s evals dictate decisions of tomorrow, and NOT just what you were sorta kinda thinkin’ oughta happen, last time you thought about it 6 months ago.

Okay, maybe "quality" and "bargain bin" was an overstatement.

No, wait, they weren’t.

We just grabbed at least 2 (maybe 3 with Chambers) free agents that have been producing at championship levels. Jones just came off a career year (and is also one of the top 3 running backs over the last 5 years) that helped put the Jets into the playoffs, and Lilja started on a Super Bowl contending team less than 2 months ago.

Seriously man. Why the hell would they:

1. Want to come to play for a team that barely finished 4-12?
2. Play for said team for less money than they could get elsewhere?

Jones surely could have held out, and tried for more, but rumor has it that Pioli was scheduling more backs for visits and it ended up putting the heat on Jones. Why would Jones care if he missed an opportunity to play for the “lowly” Chiefs by trying to hold out and letting the other interviews run their course? AND, compare 31 year old Jones’ 2 year 5 million dollar contract to 30 year old Chester Taylor’s contract of 4 years, 12.5 million dollar deal. I’d say that ultimately we got the more “quality” player, and got him at a “bargain bin” price.

Ok, as for Lilja: As said before… he just got done starting for a Super Bowl team. And has been one of the anchors for one of the leagues top offenses for the last few years. Ok, so he failed a physical. Whatever. Apparently he passed ours. Not to mention he looked pretty healthy to me 2 months ago. More telling to his story are the reports that he was let go because of the Colts wanting to beef up their line in the attempt to get a better running game going. We’re going with a smaller, more agile, more athletic line. Lilja sounds like another “quality” player to help make that happen. And here’s the bargain… we signed him for less than a backup UFA guard that we had let shop around (Wade Smith). Why the hell would Lilja want to play here? I admit that coming back home was probably appeasing to him, but seriously man. He’s a young guy that can still help a team go all the way. Hell, name another line man that was in free agency that has a better resume than Lilja.

Those two are the main FA I was talking about in the OP. What ever happened to the “no free agents will want to come here unless we over pay them” theory that was getting tossed around over the last few months?

2/3 of the Earth is covered by water. The rest is covered by Eric Berry.

Yes, and the Colts fans are NOT talking about Lilja the way Bolts fans were talking about Goff, last year.

Mostly, Indy fans’re scratchin’ their heads over this one, but mostly they trust Polian’s vision.

I don’t think Jones is an end-all, be-all, but he’s a solid veteran pickup. He should be productive and, at worst, will be a nice bell-weather for how the build on offense is progressing.

Great post RGB

I agree on all points (no matter how disappointed I am about Jason Brown, Andra Davis, and Anquan Boldin). I wasn’t thrilled with last years draft so I’m looking for some WOW factor in this one, but I like your enthusiasm! Keep it going!!! I like the moves they’ve made, and I’m looking forward to moves they WILL make! Lets hope they pay off!!!

Something to add to Haley that people forget.

We don’t hear too much about him or know too much about him. Seems like the only publicity he gets is he runs hot and even during broadcasts it seems like they keep showing him in a “whats Haley yelling at/for now” manner. Fact is though that the players play hard for him and want to play hard for him and more important play well for him. It was a common theme in dressing room interviews all year that these players want nothing more then to impress their coach. Says alot about our new HC and what he means to this team and where he fits in.

Great Analysis and post.

In 2000, the Pats were generally in the same class as the Chief’s are now. I’m sure none of the "expert analysists had them penciled in to win their division, let alone the Superbowl. A team. that has so many similarites to our building franchise. The Chiefs will be predicted to be a 6 or 7 win team, this season, I would guess. I’m sure that is about where the “experts” had the Pats rated, going into 2001. Now, I’m not predicting a Superbowl this season, by any means, but I think we are the most stable franchise in the AFC West right now, with so many transitions taking places with the the rest of the teams. San Diego hasn’t been able to retain all of the talent that has allowed them to dominate the division for the last 4 or 5 years, and I think their window of opportunity for a Superbowl has passed, and they are actually going to be reversing course, and heading into a rebuilding mode, with alot of big contracts on their roster. Denver is changing it’s entire front 3, on defense, may have a QB controversy, and let Dick Nolan, one of the best defensive minds in the game go. I also have read reports that the players are kinda split on McDaniels, so maybe a lack of trust in their leadership. Oakland, well their just the Faiders, with old Al Davis still calling the shots and making the draft picks, and a Head Caach, who may be fired when he has his first 2 game losing streak. So, compare the direction of our team, and the others in the division, and what directions they are heading, and there is no reason why we aren’t , at least close, to winning the AFC West, or competing for a wild card this season.

There once was a man from Nantucket......Nevermind.

by Racyman on Mar 17, 2010 7:59 PM CDT reply actions

I agree with you 100% Racyman

Not many people have noticed or spoken up about how each of the teams in the AFC West are growing weaker this offseason. The Faiders are probably going to remain about the same as ’09 while clearly the donkeys and the dolts are getting weaker at several levels.

I might've said the same thing LAST year about the hated Bolts.

They were still far and away the best team in the AFC last season. Do they want to add some talent, especially in the trenches? I’d say so. But they have some good young skill players (although I think letting Cromartie get away might’ve been a mistake).

I hope you meant to say AFC West there.

I don’t think they were the best in the AFC last year…Not by a long shot.

But the similarities between the 2000 Pats and the 2009 Chiefs is shocking when you really look at it. This is going to be an interesting year.

Rec'd

this is the kind of post I enjoy reading in the offseason because it legitimizes my hopefulness of the future.

For me the jury is still out on how well we are upgrading from a player standpoint…that remains to be seen, although I will remain patient (if that were possible) to see how things fill in. I know for a fact that the OL is in better shape than we were in the offseason last year. The offensive backfield is better as well. I’m sure that Cassel and the O will do much better not having to learn a new offense at the start of the season this year…They’ll go with the same one they learn in OTA’s and carry it through camp into the season.

The D is where I have questions although having a true NT will not hurt us for sure…and how well it improves the run defense and pass rush, well who knows, but it cannot absolutely can not be worse than last year.

And no one can underestimate the results of adding Weiss and Crennel to the mix.

All of this is before the draft. Friends…it will be an exciting year. We can bank on it.

Thanks RGB

Seriously, RGB that was a great post. For a minute there I forgot all about the draft and Eric Berry and was just looking forward to next season. I couldn’t agree more. In my original Kool Aid post I talked about Pioli’s long term plan for building a Super Bowl winner and I haven’t seen him waiver from that plan at all. We’ll be better next year for sure. Long term, skies the limit. Thanks for the great read.

Thanks Porkchop.

That’s kind of where I’m at now too. I could honestly care less about the draft, let’s start the season now, lol. Nah, not really. But I am very impressed with what this team has done between the end of December and now. And we should still have a phenomenal draft class coming up.

I agree with the “long term” plan, but it’s a little modified now, IMO. Pioli wants to get winners on the field now, as is evidenced by his recent moves… but you can also see how he’s setting us up with stop gaps to win now and be in position to build long term depth. Weigmann and Shaun Smith are examples of this.

Might be simpler than you're making it.

At every turn, if the value is decent and it’s an upgrade to the position group, Pioli’s likely to pull the trigger. It’s not so much about hitting home runs. Just tryin’ ta get on base.

One word - FAITH...and i ain't talking about jesus

That’s what is all about for any team. When you buy in to the idea of what’s being sold you start to believe;it gives you faith. Faith that you can get somewhere, that you can achieve something. That’s we’re buying in to here. It’s not a bad thing. That’s what Todd Haley has, faith. He believes that if every player on the team, the right 53 if you will, every guy on the staff from head coach down to the guy doing an intern job for nothing, just trying to learn, has to have. Faith. That if every guy on the team buys in, all the way. Every body has a stake in the TEAM. Then you have something, you have faith. You are going to demand that every man on that team is going to give all he has every time, every down, no matter how small the role. No matter how big. You will do your job to the utmost of your ability and every man on that team will do the same. You have TRUST in the man next to you. That trust lets you believe, that belief leads to faith.

Pioli has never taken a WR in the first (at least during his NE tenure)… but Haley IS a WR coach at heart, so the possibility could be there.

Golden Tate would be a better option if he could be gotten with our 2a pick, since he’s familiar with Weis’ system.
