Are Weiss/Crennel responsible for UFA signings?
Good Morning all.....long time reader, first time post. Wish me luck in that I don't screw it up too bad.
I'm sitting here at work, doing what I do best...thinking about the KC Chiefs instead of working and a thought crossed my mind.
Is the new coaching staff responsible, or at least the reason why, for the Chiefs signing the Unrestricted Free Agents this offseason? As a player, would I want to come to KC if Chan Gailey and Clancy Pendergast were still the coordinators? Do Charlie Weiss and Romeo Crennel, and even Emitt Thomas, bring instant street cred to our team, enough that players say "Man, the Chiefs aren't that good, but with that coaching staff, we're going places."
I think the answer is that our staff is put together so that players WANT to play for our coaches and the players realize this team will be something SPECIAL in the next few years. How else would we be able to sign Chris Chambers, Thomas Jones, Casey Weigmann, Ryan Lilja, Shaun Smith?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

looks like the fanbase is gaining some steam again with the recent moves!
To answer your question CandC i think yes Weis and Crennel are responsible for some of the signings. I think they had to have told Pioli and Hunt the only way they would come here is if they were able to evaluate UFA’s and sign whom they wanted. They are more than likely a big reason we have some of these guys even coming to KC to visit.
Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....
I agree the improved coaching staff has had an impact.
However I don’t think it is as much them telling Pioli who they want to target in free agency as it is the credability they bring to the staff. Pioli has been here for a year evaluating the talent on the team while Crennel and Weis are recent additions to the staff. I think Pioli has a better feel for where we are lacking than they do. They may give input but I still believe that Pioli makes the decisions on who to pursue.
There's also that one guy
What was his name… Bob Harley? Rod Daley?
What about visits?
What I was also trying to say is I don’t think the free agents would have been willing to even visit KC had Weiss and Crennel not been added to the coaching staff. I think those two coaches alone have the pull to make players want to visit to see what the Chiefs have to offer. I think Weiss and Crennel are player magnets. Players like to play for coaches of that caliber.

Welcome to AP Chiefs and Chopper. Thanks for the post.
Your questions have been repeated and reflected upon by almost everyone here over the last few weeks.
It does make you wonder why guys like Lilja and Jones made the decision to sign here when there were most likely offers from teams that had much better records last year. Apparently Lilja was given an offer by Houston, who would seem to be much closer to making the playoffs than we are.
I’ve been thinking about putting together an in depth post exploring some of our off season moves. You’ll probably get a more in depth answer from me there, but in short, yes, I think Romeo and Weis factor into it.
Thanks again and welcome to AP. Oh, and just for future reference, there are 2 categories of posts. FanPosts and FanShots. FanPosts generally are at least 5 or 6 paragraphs long and should contain a point of view/observation that is supported with some outside info. FanShots are generally 1-2 paragraphs and are usually quick “what do you guys think about…?” or a quick link/story about some football related news.

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on this topic
If you have time for the post Beast – I agree, I think that Romeo and Weiss factor into it, but I’d like to see what outside info supports it :)
Nothing too statistical really. Just some observations and such.
NFL network had a “Classic Game” replay of the week 13 2003 Patriots vs Colts game. I watched the last half of it and seeing Romeo and Crennel coaching that squad got me thinking.
I’ll try to get around to doing a post. Bosses are keeping me pretty busy, so it might be a while.

If Weiss/Crennel are responsible for the UFA signings...
…then who is responsible for signing Weiss/Crennel?
Scott Pioli
When Pioli was first brough on board there was a lot of hype that he was SUCH a great addition. After watching what he has done so far I now see what the hype is about, but we’ll see if these moves (which look to be outstanding) can translate into Wins.
If things do get turned around it will because the Kansas City Chiefs as a TEAM turns things around. I would say it all starts with Scott Pioli, continues with the coaches he has put in place (Like Haley, Weiss, and Crennel), and is fulfilled with the on the feild performance of our players (inherited, drafted, and FA/UFA signings).
C&C - good first post, didn't screw it up at all ... you should see most of mine!
good food for thought just in the title … I imagine the OC & DC have at least SOMETHING to do with UFA signings, they want this or that player who, in return, wants to play not JUST for that team, but for THAT coach … and with Weis & Crennel we have guys that a LOT of players would want to be under
so far so good … you keep thinking and keep posting, good stuff

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
To add to your point...
I think alot of players want to play for these guys because they are the best in the biz and it’s not like they are interested in players that they don’t think fit thier systems (Al Davis). If I was a FA, I would want (A.) To be sucessfull (2.) Play for a coach who will get the best out of my abilities (D.) Play for a coach who believes in me. (7.) Play for a coach who thinks I am/ will be the best at my positionin the NFL. (Y.) Play for the best in the biz. (11.) Get paid. (Not in that order)

Berry groups
I tend to avoid draft speculation as a whole, as fun as it may be. We can say get this guy or that guy, but what it boils down to is we can only pick guys who aven’t been picked in front of us. We’ll see what happens. I have faith in our front office and will be excited no matter who they end up getting – as long as it’s not Tebow.

we may draft Tebow
just not at number 5.

Next yr
If our coordinators do some magic this yr, the players will come next yr for sure. If we can get to 7-9 or 9-7 there will be players that see what our team is doing and want to play for us. I’m pretty sure o-linemen like to zone block and offensive skill players like out style of offense. Not sure how thrilled def players are regarding the 4-3 and 3-4. Probably depends on their ideal position on the def line (Dorsey for example).

I think Crennel and Weis make us more credible.
I definitely think the hiring of these two coaches make coming to KC more enticing. It certainly isn’t the money, as I think every FA we signed could have gotten more elsewhere. Pioli has made some real sweet deals. I also think that Crennel and Weis, of course, had major input on who we signed. I doubt Shaun Smith would be a Chief if he hadn’t played under Crennel.
