Thoughts from just another ChiefsFan...

Our Chiefs have a great and long history that we love and continue to follow.  These last couple of seasons have just been awful.  I still keep my head high and defend my Chiefs everytime I hear something negative which is just about everyday.  There are a lot of ways to improve this team.  I'll break down the key positions and give you all my thoughts on them.

Quarterback

Here we have Cassel and I must admit at first I was very skeptical of what he could bring to the table.  I was riding high on the Thiggy train.  I mean Cassel held on to the ball too long and had a lot of talent to throw to.  Here in KC we had Bowe and a horrid offensive line.  Thiggy had a lot of problems but it seemed to work at the time.  Now I think we made the best decision.  Cassel has some things to work on but he is a leader and can get things done.  We have a solid backup in Croyle.  We seen what he did in the Baltimore game and he didn't get hurt!  With a new offensive coordinator I'm sure we will be just fine at QB.

Runningback

Probably the position I'm the most excited to see on the field.  We get to see what JC can do with a whole season.  What is this?  Thomas Jones from the Jets? OMGZ! I think that these two will have chemistry and have a good balance of carries.  I think we will be top 5 rushing attack this year and that is being safe   If we get a good fullback or work with Castille I think we will be elite in this catagory.

Offensive Line

This seemed to be our weakest link last year.  The first half of the season it seemed like there wasn't even a line to provide blocking.  The last half was a little different and Cassel didn't get sacked as much.  We seemed to solidify more.  I think with the free agents we got and we get some Oline in the draft we will continue to get better but far from elite.

Tight Ends

We need help and that is all there is to be said.  We have Pope who I'm not sold on yet but he seems to be the best option at this point.  Then we have Cottam who my god, I have such huge expectations of.  I wish he would just get better.  He is a huge target that has great potential.

Wide Recievers

I think we are solid at this postion.  We have Bowe which is amazing just like always needs help on drops.  Chambers can stretch the field and be a reliable target in the redzone.  All the rest of our core are decent but no real playmakers.  I expect a golden draft to help this position.

Defensive Line

We have a very young defensive lineman group that have huge potential.  I think next year we will be alot better especially since we got the Cleveland Mauler to boost the middle of the line.  I don't think we should draft any lineman but if they were to do so find one late in the draft who could fit with our team.

Line Backers

We have an odd group here that needs to be badly upgraded.  DJ seems to let us down 13 out of 16 games of every year.  We have a solid leader in MV but he is old.  I thought like everyone else that Mays was the second coming of Christ.  Of course, he had to be a let down.  The rest of our core is solid but nothing spectacular.  We need to draft a linebacker within the first 3 rounds especially if we want to continue to run a 3-4 defense.

Cornerbacks

We have a solid CB group with potential to be elite.  Flowers is just amazing and I think will have a pro bowl year that is recoginized.  Carr will continue to get better and finally learn to whip his head around.  We could use a good CB in the draft to help out.

Safeties

We could just draft Eric Berry then clone him to play every spot on the defense.  Realistically, he would be a great pick to help out in the backfield.  We need a true safety and that is the bottom line. Page needs help and who knows if he can stay healthy.  McGraw is a big hitter who can fly around the ball but he is old.  I don't even want to mention the rest of our safeties we have on the roster, it is that bad.

Special Teams

We need a punt and kickoff returner.  Enough said.

I expect a golden draft to help this position.

So is this code for Golden Tate? :)
I agree with just about everything you wrote, and I am excited to see what Charles and Jones can do together

I'd like my Koolaid in Fruit Punch!

But I’ll make an exception for my koolaid being Berry flavored on April 22.

Look what they did to me Kray.

Apparently the Haley pic upset someone and I was forced to abandon it :(

Yeah.

I tried petitioning to Joel, but he pointed out that he’s had to ban people before and they tried using the “Well this guy has a picture of_____ defense”, so it was best to change it. It was fun while it lasted.

Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....

A rising tide lifts all boats.

Pioli’s specialty, I think. The big issue is whether they get real playmakers to complement the team build. My sense is that playmakers are usually there, already, just that GMs in their lust for playmakers, per se, fail to build a good platform for their stars.

And I'm not too high on Spoon for our 3-4.

Others can argue ‘til they’re blue in the face about needing better coverage skills from the LB corps, but from MY 3-4 perspective, the KC LB corps isn’t all-around BIG enough, just yet.

It’s not that Mays or Belcher or Williams aren’t QUICK enough, it’s that the guys in the middle aren’t on the high side of 240 and aren’t playin’ SMART enough. To my eye, this showed up most often in the holes they chose to fill or not to fill on stretch plays, and even THAT tendency (to overpursue, mainly) was in keeping with what the LB SHOULD be doing, if he can trust the back-side pursuit (NT, DE, back-side LB) to finish anything he redirects to the middle. Some of those LB errors I saw (or THOUGHT I saw) might’ve been the one guy doin’ HIS job to stop the outside momentum, and failure by another guy nobody noticed on that play failing to fulfill his end of the team concept.

by hmills110 on Mar 17, 2010 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Yup

Straight up the gut of the Defense.
I think I read that the whole idea of the 3-4 was to channel the Offense into the middle.
When the Chiefs channel it to the middle it is right into the weakness of the Chiefs Defense.

Cassel didnt have alot of weapons

The receivers had a difficult time getting open, and dropped alot of balls. People forget that Thigpen had Tony G and Bowe for 16 games. Thigpen is no better imo

You had me until this statement about our d line.
I don’t think we should draft any lineman but if they were to do so find one late in the draft who could fit with our team.

We need a NT, period. We didn’t pick up a stud nt, we picked up a solid backup / rotational guy.

The first 3 picks of the draft will be defense. Pioli loves him some defense.

by ChiefsfanJon on Mar 17, 2010 6:29 AM CDT reply actions

I think we have another needs before the D-line...

we have dorsey, jackson, magee….no come on. They are all very young lineman. If you can’t coach them then something is wrong. Get rid of the staff or those players. Then of course you have edwards and our newest pickup. We have plenty of lineman and young ones. Do something with them.

Jamaal Charles...Enough said.

by Chiefsfan85 on Mar 17, 2010 7:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Nice. Now let me begin. J/K

I agree with most. I think your a little optimistic on Cassel. That’s me. I’m all in with him for now though. He’s our guy. But this is the season. He either gets it or he gets out.

Three of our WR’s led the league in the top ten in drops. We led the league as a team of receivers in dropped passes. And yes sorry to all the Cassel apologists, but Cassel was a big part of the reason for that as well. But the receivers are owed the majority of the blame here. So I don’t know how we could be set at a position that had the highest amount of drops ever. There’s a problem.

I think sometimes my goals and aspirations for our Chiefs are just set higher than most. If this is “SET” at WR, we might as well convert the team to a soccer team, like we did the defense to a 34, and call it a day.

The RB position will be THE best in the NFL by game 8 (my prediction) We will own it.

The rest of it all is up for grabs. We were almost dead last on offense and defense and QB and receivers. Only special teams and RB were above average.

I still don’t know what to think about defense. If DJ becomes what he is capable of then we have a major piece of the puzzle we don’t need to draft for. If he doesn’t we got yet another hole. Its difficult to know. Good post. I agree pretty much with the rest other than QB and receiver.

Cassel was hurried a LOT and the ball was comin' out early 'n' HOT.

Both the timing and the velocity of the ball made a lotta those catches tough ones. Not entirely the WRs’ fault. But that’s the kind of offense that Whisenhunt and Haley had going in AZ and THEIR receivers caught ‘most everything they could get their hands on. OTOH, Warner had more time more often than Cassel had last season. Even then, though, Warner threw with high velocity, the idea being that only YOUR guy has a real chance of making the catch and you’re fitting it into a fairly small window.

IMO, the QB-to-WR chemistry was JUST starting to develop off the play fake towards the very end of the season. WRs, TEs and backs were getting the ball closer to the moment when they were SUPPOSED to, based on how the play was drawn up. Getting THAT part of it down still leaves you in the position of actually developing real chemistry. Also, as it relates to chemistry, other than D-Bowe, who was there to get extra reps from Cassel in the offseason? And I’m pretty sure D-Bowe was more about the potato chips ‘n’ barbecue, rather than pallin’ around with Cassel, last offseason.

by hmills110 on Mar 17, 2010 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Pretty good

I have to say though, if DJ was going to live up to his potential he should of done it by now. We are so on the right path with this team. I’m as excited as I’ve been about the Chief’s since Lenny, Bobby , Buck and the boys graced the field.

The most important thing you can do in life is help other people.

by dklogue1 on Mar 17, 2010 9:07 AM CDT reply actions

not that i think DJ is a great bust or anything

maybe he needs a top notch D-coordinator to get him in line. He has been in the middle of transition after transition. Hopefully Crennel can get DJ’s head on straight and figure him out and he can be an asset to this team.

Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....

by jrcnc on Mar 17, 2010 9:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree..

Crennel is a great defensive mind. Maybe DJ needs a little push in the right direction cause we badly need it right now.
