Bucs sign FA safety Sean Jones(?)
Nothing from big time sources yet, but there are reports that the Bucs have signed Sean Jones. The bad news is that he was one of the better young FA safeties out there and if true the Chiefs missed out on him. The good news is after signing a safety the Bucs will be more likely to let Berry slip past them.

Berry will "slip" down to #10
Safeties are not drafted that high. I keep saying and people keep ignoring it.
I would be willing to bet something he doesn't make it to 10.

I would bet almost anything he isn't picked before 8
Even teams that have everything in place BUT a Safety don’t take Safety’s that high.
If we don't take him.
Cleveland will take him in a heartbeat.
He won’t go past 7.

"The Battle is Won and Lost in the Trenches"
(which for the most part we are currently loosing).
I agree
which over the past couple days I have felt confident that we will get him…. today I have lost that confidence and it is sad. We are going to pass up on one of the greats in my opinion and we will all look back to this draft and said…..
Eric Berry could have been a Chief.
sad. I hope Pioli is just amazed by him and draft him.

I would be shocked if Mike Holmgren
picked a Safety as the cornerstone player of his new regime.
Are you serious?
Also, safeties aren't usually rated as top 5 picks.
If you go back 10 years and look at mock drafts and draft prospect lists most years there aren’t any in the top 10. I found three other then Eric Berry that were consistantly rated in the top ten players of their draft. Sean Taylor in 2004 (was picked 5th), Michael Huff in 2006 (fell out of top ten), and LaRon Landry in 2007 (was picked 6th). So there have been three other times a prospect was rated in the top ten this decade and 2 of the 3 did get picked in the top ten. I also realize that since none of those guys are now all world players you can also use that as an argument against picking him.

None of those guys became a Polamalu, Reed or Sanders, none of whom were taken that high in the draft.
Safety is not a high value position. Its the same reason you don’t see Guards or Centers taken that high. It doesn’t require great athleticism like Cornerback does, nor is it a critically important position like Left Tackle or Quarterback.
Like linebacker, safety is a position that benefits from intelligence and instinct over athletic ability.
I’m not downing on Berry, but his stock has dropped a lot since the end of the college season and it will continue to do so. I find it highly unlikely any team is going to spend that much money on a center fielder. While draftniks have the freedom to just think about best player available, GMs have to consider the finances.
