Chiefs Bringing In LB Sean Weatherspoon and S Earl Thomas For Visits
The Kansas City Chiefs are getting to work on their private visits in preparation for the NFL Draft in late April. We've learned the names of two first round prospects the Chiefs will be bringing to town -- Mizzou LB Sean Witherspoon and Texas S Earl Thomas.
Both are being reported by Scout.com (via WtexKC)
I think these two workouts are interesting because both would likely be available in the middle of the first round. Perhaps a trade down? The Chiefs are just being prepared.
A little more info on each player after the jump.
Sean Weatherspoon
Witherspoon is a local guy so a lot of people know him. He's 6'1", 239 pounds and a lot of folks have him going to the Atlanta Falcons in the first round.
I've heard him described as a better fit for a 4-3 than a 3-4.
He's rated the third overall linebacker by NFL Draft Scout.
The Chiefs will also have a local pro day for guys from Mizzou so I'm not sure how Weatherspoon fits into that.
Chiefs GM Scott Pioli went to Mizzou's game against Nebraska in Columbia last season. I remember he talked about it on one of the local radio stations the next day and mentioned that there was a great defensive player on both sides of the field (Suh and Weatherspoon?).
Earl Thomas
Thomas is coming out of Texas and is 5'10", 208 pounds.
He's generally the second ranked safety behind Eric Berry but interestingly Mike Mayock of NFL Network had him above Berry.
He's another guy that could be available in the middle-to-end of the first round.

I'm ok with that
Not a big fan of the contracts being chucked out for top 10 players. Not proportionate to their abilities IMO>
i know hype builds some of the top ten drafted
who would we trade with and for what i know theres talk about miami but who else would jump at the 5th and for what

IF NOT BERRY, THEN GIVE ME EARL
Earl is a nice nice player. Id love to have him as one of our safeties.
There are also guys who slip.
Sometimes it’s just the way the draft plays out. One of these guys could possible end up at the top of the 2nd round.
True but...
i dont see either falling to the 2nd. Teams like Saints, Eagles, Titans will be looking at LBs

Impossible...
for these two in my opinion.
1. Suh will fall to us at 5
2. McClain will fall to us at 2a
3. The Chiefs will trade DJ and keep Dorsey

so what would we get in return?
Say we trade down from #5 to #12 for example. What would we get in return and would it be worth losin gout on Berry or Okung? Throw some hypothetical scenarios out there for me. Trying to feel good about not taking Berry and acquiring diff players. Woul dwe get someone’s 2nd rounder for trading down? 3rd?

if we end up with a 1st and a another 2nd or 3rd that would be very nice

LOL
I’m not stuck on Berry at any cost, I just think he’d be the best option for KC at #5. If KC can trade down, then hell yeah there’s a lot of players I’d be happy with. Including Berry….
And I like my Koolaid in Zima.
The path to Victory is made of losers.
If we moved back 7 spots
we’d most likely get a 2nd and 4th/5th. It would be worth it. 3 picks in the 2nd round would be crazy. We could even draft Earl Thomas in the 1st, trade two 2nds to get back in the first to draft Spoon.

and I really like him but does he fit in a 3-4?

It's those Freddie Kruger fingers that gets everybody freakin...they don't call him spikes for nothing!
Plus we can never have enough Brandons on the team, if we can find a way to draft Brandon Graham we’d be all set.
Does having a team with the most Brandon’s count as the right 53 to Pioli?

No because if the ground was dry then SUH would have had better footing and torn Gabbert's leg clean off.

It might be dry in Lincoln next year
but mizzou will not have a chance. Pelini says that the blackshirts will be even better next year. Sprinkle in an offense that is slightly better than a highschool offense (which would be an improvement) and Big Red wins the big 12.

This draft
is way to unpredictable for the Chiefs… I think we all are gonna be way off with our guesses/predictions… hmmm what day is it, the 27th or what?
Winning isnt a matter of life and death, its more important than that.

208lbs. at the combine
He was 188lbs. when he was a youngster, but this was his sophomore year. He filled out pretty well, which has helped him take on ball-carriers.

interesting...
Well, Thomas’ stock is rising that’s for sure – a solid viable option @ Safety IF Berry is gone at 5.
By the way – Spoon is growing on me; a bonafide 1st rounder. Right now my 3rd choice at 5.

While Thomas COULD be available in the mid-late 1st...
…it’s looking more and more likely that he could be a top-15, possibly even top-10 pick. I said prior to the combine that he was the anti-Mays, in that he’s a guy who wows on the football field, but not as much in measurements and the gym. Well, turns out he’s pretty damn good in workouts as well. His size is better than expected, he times and drills well, his tackling is fairly solid, and his instincts are the best in the class. That puts him probably a hair behind Berry, but still in contention for a top-ten pick.

Good news Chiefs Fans,
Tampa just signed safety Sean Jones (If our sources are correct) so it looks like Eric Berry is a lock for you guys. Sean would provide an instan upgrade over our Miss-a-tackle y Piscitelli. Good luck with Eric.
I was the head of the Eric Berry bandwagon- Im sad to say its over.
Puffy Rod's Bandwagon continues forever.
New head of the Matthew Barnaby Bandwagon!!!
I wouldnt say Thomas would be avalible with in the late part fo the first round
I think he may get picked really high like Donte Whitner did a few years back, and no later than mid first
Pioli could fool us all.
What if instead of trading down, like we are all assuming…what if Pioli is packaging both second rounders to get back in the first in hopes of getting both Berry/Weatherspoon? Or Suh/Thomas?
wakes up from dreamland.
Yeah, I know the possibility of it happening are 0%. I’m just saying…..last year we couldn’t shop our 1st rounder for a trade down that was remotely fair…thus forcing us to pick, nor could we deal Dorsey, though not for lack of trying. I don’t think a year is going to change that there simply aren’t going to be trading parters for KC that want anyone at 5th (and if some fantasy land Suh drops to five…why would we want to trade?) even Bradford…due to the 50 million price tag coming along with him.
I’m not dissing Pioli’s efforts and successful signings at all up to this point., but….somehow I expected more…. and I know that is horribly unfair of me. Even last year, the Cassel/Vrabel trade was anti-climatic in a way because it seemed so “parting gift.” in a sense. However, I believe everything Pioli has done the last two seasons will make KC a contender…possibly this season. I just feel like, we’ve been down for a few years now, I am ready for some bang for my buck I guess.
SPOOOOOON!!!
We need a leader and a motivator on the defensive side!! I want a guy to play with some tenacity!!! I think we are going to draft down and I think that is great! With the talent on the board in this years draft I’d trade for sure! There are some pro bowl tight ends, running backs that will be 3rd rounders this year because there is so much depth.
