Lilja Gets Three Years With The Chiefs
The one thing I was worried about when it comes to Ryan Lilja is the price tag. He was the best remaining guard available in free agency which could cause a situation where his value is over-inflated since the market is dry.
The Chiefs reportedly weren't looking to pay top dollar -- and we're still not sure if they did -- but Lilja is under contract for three years, according to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star.
This is good thing for the Chiefs. Some of the other veterans the Chiefs have brought in have been on short-term deals with little money involved. In other words, the players they've signed in the past aren't in it for the long-haul.
Lilja appears to be a player who is in it for the long-haul.
According to 610 Sports' Chris Hamblin, there were two other teams in the bidding for Lilja -- Seattle and Houston -- and both were offering more money than the Chiefs as of yesterday.
So did Lilja take a hometown discount or did the Chiefs buck up a few, uh, bucks?

Thanks to everyone who got info up on this story
I’ve been in and out all day at work so I’m just kinda catching up.
The headline makes it sound more like a sentence than a contract
lol but I’m glad we picked him up.

I'm thinking
a hometown discount. I’m sure he got a decent contract and he’s won a SB so why not come home and settle in where you’re comfortable.

How is the Don signing all these guys for less money coming from a 4-12 team?
I get the hometown discount thing but KC is hardly hometown for TJ.

Value to me is different though.
Its a “what have you dont for me lately league” and based on that I would think Jones would have a much higher value.

they believe what they're selling
1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.
Great point
and one I think can’t be discounted. They have the coaching staff and front office in place. Now they just need to add the right players. You (insert prospect) are one of the right players.

Seriously. Pioli and Haley have a vision and they’re getting players to buy into it. I’m telling you, 2010 is going to surprise the league.

Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....
we are close
close to be a competing team. We still need center (younger), wr #3 and te on offense. Not much, almost there!
I’d have to say def is where the picks will go in the draft. NT, ilb, safety, olb. Those 4 positions need to be giventop priority. Agree?
Then with the three 5th round picks we can add depth at o-line and db or wr.
Mr J

Id have to agree with alot of that.
Would like the younger center to be someone versatile who may be able to play guard or center if we’re going to spend a moderately high pick on them. But i hope youre right about alot of good high defensive help.

As much as Ilike Pouncey I hope we get Walton.
He can watch for half the season as he learns from Wiegmann. As Casey starts to tire later in the season Walton takes over.
I like Walton better than Pouncey 7 days a week
Pouncey is only rated so high because he can play center or guard. Walton dominates at the C position.
I like Pouncey we ain't getting him
Walton is not an immediate upgrade and get’s pushed by NT so I read.
I think maybe a Center in the 2011 draft Wisnewski or another might be a better pick

Pouncey started day 1 as a freshman on a Natl, Chmpshp team and has only gotten better. He is the best center in the draft and probably the best guard as well.

I think what i said is being misconstrued
I think Pouncey is a great player and would love to have him. I’m just saying he is rated higher because he has the versatility to play guard where as Walton probably couldn’t but Walton is a dominant player.
Mostly agree but...
I think we need a wr #3 who is a wr #1. We need playmakers. On offense and defense. I think we have officially moved to a zpne blocking scheme (depth needed), which will give Cassell time to find open recievers to get the ball to. We definetly need a reciever who can stretch the field. And I’m not just saying this because I want us to draft dez bryant, I would be happy with Tate, Benn or D. Alexander (hough his knee is worrisome).

Backup for Casey
The Donkeys aren’t in any rush to resign Ben Hamilton, why not put an offer on him. He worked with CW last year and it hurts the Donks in the process?
Wow...
It’s actually a good fit. He’s another ZB’r. But I think we’ve probably reached our capacity of vet FA’s at this point. We are going to want to have at least a couple backup spots for younger guys.
I would rather have Hamilton than Niswanger, personally…but I’m guessing Niswanger’s cheaper, and Hamilton may get to go somewhere with a better chance to start.
Honestly, forgot he was a FA, he’s been with Denver…what seems like forever.
Just a thought
I personally don’t like the idea of having 1st, 2nd, 3rd year players at the center position. Needs to be a vet that has experience as a OL general. Hamilton isn’t that old. 32. I don’t see CW playing next year so essentially Hamilton can serve as our starter for the next 3-4 years while we bring up a young guy.
I think they plan on Weigmann starting next season
Hamilton would probably be depth, and again, I think he can probably go some place with a better shot to start somewhere else. I wouldn’t mind it, though.

why I said the closest things. I agree, I really don’t see him in this draft either.

Welcome back Ryan Lilja.
Classy move taking the hometown over the money, especially since we are the same team that stupidly cut you when you were a rookie. Welcome back!
and none of us will forget it, if he plays well, he will be loved.
Jamaal "do it all" Charles
KC Will Trade Derrick Johnson
I keep hearing people say this
fact is it is simply not true. Lilja was not cut by the Chiefs his rookie year. lilja was an undrafted free agent that the Chiefs placed on the practice squad, remember that year 2004 we had what was considered the best line in the NFL so pracice squad is no big surprise there. The Colts came in and signed him off our practice squad…..he was never cut.
Well...
He didn’t make the team, and had to be put on waivers. That is basically getting cut. To Ryan, I’m sure he felt like he got ‘cut.’
The fact that they told him they wanted to put him on the practice squad I’m sure softened the blow, but at the time it was probably the difference between an NFL minimum salary of like $275k and something like $50k for the practice squad.
I promise you he was happy when he heard the Colts (or anyone) had picked him up, because it meant he’d be getting real NFL game checks.
Good Deal!
I just regained some of the faith I had temporarily lost in Pioli. I have no problems with who he has brought in, in FA, but we needed a couple of Pro Bowl caliber, long term players, that will continualy help this team improve and work with our fairly young core of young players, not just some short term fixes, and to build some depth, but guys that will have a major impact. Lilja fits that mold, and from what I’ve read “fits the right 53” that Pioli and Haley always mention. I know alot of Colts fans , and even players, are not happy that the Colts released him, which tells you something about his character and talent. I think our young group of players is underrated, and there still may be a few who prove they can be valuable contributors to the team. I like Magee, Gilberry, Albert, O’Callahan, Nkwuyde, Studebaker, Mays, Page, Jackson, Dorsey, Flowers, Bowe, Charles, DJ, Cottam (i’m sure I missed a few), and we still have hope that players like Colin Brown can contribute, and even Barry Richardson. There are even some names on our roster, I’’m not real familair with, that may even show up. There has been signs of potential in all of the players I mentioned, and with improved coaching, who knows how much they will improve this season. That is why you build through the draft, and we will have a real good idea of if the strategy is beginning to pay off this season. Some will not be around, but I think a good share of them will play a part of this team in years to come. They all were victims of a new system on both offense and defense last season, and had to adjust to a coach that demanded discipline and a team first mentallity. Let’s see how many of our young guys drastically improve this season, with Haley, Pioli and the rest of the staff now having a year to evaluate them. We can’t totally overlook the young talent that is already on the roster, and the role these players will play in who we bring in as Free Agents, and how we run our draft. As Haley stated: " The worse is over."
There once was a man from Nantucket......Nevermind.

Ok I have to do this...
what are the chances the Chiefs try and move Waters now?
1. Suh will fall to us at 5
2. McClain will fall to us at 2a
3. The Chiefs will trade DJ and keep Dorsey
As I've said before...
If the Chiefs were going to try and move Waters, they would’ve done it before last weekend when they paid him a $2 mil roster bonus. They are a very frugal organization, and if they traded Waters now, that’s $2 mil they essentially flushed down the toilet.
The Colts...
paid Lilja his bonus before he got released. Maybe they are frugal, but I don’t they are heartless bastards and would snub a class act like Brian like that. He’s earned that money.
1. Suh will fall to us at 5
2. McClain will fall to us at 2a
3. The Chiefs will trade DJ and keep Dorsey
by I_Bleed_Red. on Mar 16, 2010 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions
The bonus to Lilja, was guaranteed...
And technically, that ‘roster bonus’ is seen as part of the next year’s salary. So it’s not really snubbing a guy to not pay it any more than it is to cut him and not pay him his salary for that next season.
The main point is, if you’re going to trade him, you would do it before paying the roster bonus so the team getting his services for that year would pay for his services for that year.
Lilja isn’t a good example b/c they didn’t have a choice, they would’ve paid him whether he was cut or not.
if they're do a bonus
and the team cuts him just so they don’t have to pay it, that’s snubbing. especially if they cut him and then try to resign him without the bonus, ala TJ. just because they can do something doesn’t make it right
I just read on the Colts blog
That they (Colts) are trying to go with bigger linemen. Which appears to be the case considering who they picked up.
It was a class act by the Colts to pay Lilja
not so much the Jets and TJ thus they bought an ad to repair their image.

the colts paid Lilja his bonus because
he agreed to restructure his contract last year to help the Colts with their salary cap. Part of that agreement was to move the salary he cut into a roster bonus, so in this case the roster bonus was actually for the previous year and that is why the Colts paid it before cuting him. Not class or respect, but a verbal contractual agreement that they honored.
This is completely common.
And typically when players do this, the roster bonus becomes guaranteed. Are you saying you have proof that the roster bonus was not guaranteed and it was just a verbal agreement? This would be highly unusual, and a poor job by Lilja’s agent if so.
They can't gaurantee it in the contract
other than saying if they are on the roster at this date it gets paid. The verbal agreement was that it would be paid, meaning they would not cut him before that date. If you think about the concept of restructuring your contract to help with cap money and a team puting that money into a roster bonus for the next year and then gauranteeing it no matter what in writing…well I think the league would have legal issues with that and count the roster bonus on the previous year’s salary cap. (Which would just counter the entire reworking of a contract for cap purposes altogether.)
a little inside info...
I heard from a friend that I trust that Ryan was building a house in the op area and is tying the knot this summer in kc so I wouldn’t be surprised If he took a discount to stay @ home.
That being said, I’m damn glad to have him on the chiefs, lots on experience…winning experience, which can’t be over looked. Winning is contagious, being around peyton doesn’t hurt either. The OL is shaping up!

Am I stupid or..
don’t t he skills that made Lilja a good pass blocker translate into a zone blocking scheme? The only knock I’ve heard on him is that he was weak on run blocking.
Good assignments blocker and takes good angles
not much lead in his shorts for mauling people. So yes, he can zone block.

deal is for 3 years, 7.5 million
…seems like a great deal to me! GO CHIEFS
This off season is looking very successful
Thomas Jones is a good complementary workhorse back. Lilja a great signing, two new coordinators, Eric Berry on the horizon, a linebacker and tackle in round two?, and a possible steal of Denario Alexander in 3.
Is it safe?
