Wade Smith

Even
if thats true Smith is gone and Lilja is here now. We needed to bring in somebody that could help out and Lilja is a good signing.
Funny how we all
Praise Polian for his genus when we look at their roster, but the min he cuts a guy, he suddenly becomes less so. Pioli’s second mistake as I see it not resigning Smith, last yr was him NOT signing Jason Brown.
I wanted Jason Brown last year...
But Lilja was cut, primarily because Indy was changing their running game/philosophy. We’re running the ZB scheme that they ran when Lilja was more effective. It requires smaller more mobile OL.
So, he’s a good pickup for us, and probably was a smart cut for them.
i haven't read anything about anyone questioning Polian on AP
all i’ve read is the Colts wanting to go bigger on their line, going to a power blocking scheme, and Lilja didn’t fit that need anymore.
This is excellent
NND, I don’t understand how you can say Smith is better than Lilja. In my mind, a OL starter on the Colts during two Super Bowls, must be better than a back up on the 7 wins in two season Chiefs OL.
I really like Wade Smith and am sad that he left, but there is no way that Smith can compare to Lilja if he couldn’t beat Allman out for a starting position.

We dont
Run to the right anyway. Plus how often did we run up the gut? With Jones now we can just run to the left and be fine. When we we did run right it was off tackle JC is too fast for DTs.

I seem to remember seeing quite a few highlights of easy dropped passes in recent years.
he's always near the top of the league in drops
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

He demands the ball so much that the QB and OC throw to him more often than they should just so he shuts the fuck up.

I went to the Bills game last year...
It’s painfully amazing how obvious it is when they’re going to throw to him. When it’s a pass play to TO, he bolts off the line like it’s the game-winning catch in the championship. When it’s a run play, he barely jumps off in time to meet the guy he’s going to half-ass block. I don’t think he’s as bad as he used to be, but it’s still clear to me he’s in this game for himself.
My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:
1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.
Terrell, you know you're not supposed to be trolling NFL blogs...

Okay Peter King… who are we going to draft then?
If we are going to build the line up… who do we spend a #5 pick on after signing Lilja and Weigmann?
Sounds like they are building the line through FA and did not go for Rolle when they HAD THE CHANCE, b/c they are selecting Eric Berry.
Plus, if Suh is not there at #5, you can cancel out building the D-Line… Okung will also be gone b/c of the Lions.
Eric Berry's #1 Fan... and #2 Fan. +14
The more depth they sign,
the more he can sign the best player available. Lilja is an upgrade for sure, but our OL is still in desperate need of young talent. Maybe not at number 5 though.
who knows, may finally use the 5th round to nab some OL help...we missed on a few in the past couple years that were just sitting there(nicks, duke robinson)

They are gonna say....
With Alleman, Indukwae, and Wade Smith all off the team….
The Chiefs had no choise. They do not have a single ORG on their roster, not even ONE.
They will have to draft a Guard no matter what because they dont have one, but signing a player that knows the position, even one with a question mark at physical endurace was an absolute most for the Chiefs, unless they wanted to go into the draft NEEDING a starter at RG and a back up at RG incase the starter gets dinged.
ORG was a ‘must have one NOW’ position. I would not count on this guy being stellar or the cream of the crop. But at this point; he’s a warm body to fill a position that was completly open on the roster.

Chris Hamblin was the source about Lilja having two other offers that were better...
And he’s NOT a reliable source, IMO. But that doesn’t mean it’s not true.
Regardless, I think we do have our ORG, and his name is Brian Waters.
Lilja can be a very solid LG and Waters at this point is more suited to RG, IMO. We’ll see, but that’s my prediction.
To Texas Chief’s point, I agree we need to address interior OL in the draft, by 2011 we will for sure need a new C, and I’d fully support drafting an interior OL in the rounds 2-4 if they feel the value is right. It is now more of a long term need than a short term one, however.

The guy was assessed by the coaching staff that is KNOWN for it's ability to pick and churn out OL...
…and he was cut for failing a physical.
I trust the Colts brass when it comes to OL precisely because year after year they have shown a knack for identifying talent and coaching players.
The Colts have a good to great OL every single season because their scounts and brass seem to have NAILED the ability to idetify talent in linemen. If theose guys are telling you that a player hasn’t passed a physical and they they are perfectly ok with letting that player walk……I’d believe them.
He’s a warm body/stop gap that’s here to fill a huge gaping hole on the roster, nothing more.

Colts are moving away from smaller lineman
Lilja didn’t fit their system any more. Pretty simple. He fits our system, didn’t fit there’s.
Can he play RG?? That I don’t know, but I bet he can play LG for us, and I bet he’s a starting OL for us for at minimum 2 seasons.
I'm guessing this is why Tony Ugoh starts for them
you can never say that an organization mastered scouting a position, free agency and the draft are too much of a toss up
Plus it was the new O line coach in Indy that wanted Lilja gone, he wants big lineman, LIlja doesn’t qualify. Check the stats Lilja was solid last season despite playing next to two horrible LT’s
The newest addition to the Eric Berry fanclub
oh he's certainly an upgrade for the Chiefs.... Hell, it would be hard NOT to be.
If he plays RG he would be upgrading…..nobody. Since we don’t have one ont he roster. It’s pretty easy to be an upgrade over a giant gaping hole on the field =P

Lilja and Wiegman stats
Reposting from another thread, now that Lilja is here (hooray!)
Here are how teams’ Offensive lines ranked last year: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol
In runs up the middle: Denver’s OL with Wiegman taking every snap at center ranked 6th in the league, at 4.41 yards/carry. Indy, with Lilja at guard, taking every snap until the last game, when he sat out some okays to rest for the postseason, was 8th in the league at 4.39. KC was 30th, at 3.34 yards. The league average on runs up the middle was 4.08.
In pass protection, Indy was #1, no surprise there. Denver was 12th, and KC was 25th.
Those are ranks for the offensive lines as a whole, but Lilja and Weigman were starters on those lines, and it’s hard to imagine that Lilja wouldn’t be an upgrade here, and if Weigman plays as he did last year, he surely would be.
Pro Football focus ranks linemen individually, after reviewing every play of the season.
They have Wiegman as a -5.5 player last season, a bit below average, with his biggest issue being called for 6 penalties. He seemed to rate solidly at run blocking and pass blocking:
http://profootballfocus.com/by_player.php?tab=by_player&season=2009&page=&surn=wiegman&playerid=227
By comparison, they have Niswanger at -13.3 last year:
http://profootballfocus.com/by_player.php?tab=by_player&season=2009&page=&surn=niswanger&playerid=3442 He was called for 6 penalties as well. Interestingly, they show Niswanger playing horribly for the first half of the year, but getting better as the season went along. I think most people would agree that the Chiefs OL improved from horrible to not so bad by the end of the year. They show that Jacksonville, Baltimore and Pittsburgh abused Niswanger badly, but he played decently in the rest of the games.
They have Lilja as a +7.9 player, which is solidly above average, and a +3.8 run blocker, which is also above average: http://profootballfocus.com/by_player.php?tab=by_player&season=2009&page=&surn=lilja&playerid=2105
He wasn’t called for a single penalty all year, according to that site.
For KC, in only 486 plays, Goff was a -12. He allowed 11 QB pressures, 4 sacks and 3 hits. They have Waters as our best OL, and Albert having a miserable year, especially with the 13 penalties called on him. Alleman had horrible numbers, but Idukwe was a tiny bit above average in limited playing time.
http://profootballfocus.com/cstats.php?tab=by_team&season=2009&teamid=16&stype=a&stats=o
People always quibble with the numbers from PFF, but at least they review every play of the season, so even if you disagree with some of their numbers, it’s coming from watching every play. I highly doubt that any of us watched every play that Lilja and Weigman were involved in last year.
Anyway, take those numbers with however many grains of salt you want, at least they come from someone watching all the plays, not just remembering a few remarkable plays.

Where does he fit?
He can’t play RG. He is an upgrade over Waters in pass protection, but he is a liability in the run game. Lilja also played next to a Pro Bowl C in Jeff Saturday and had Peyton Manning calling out protections — meaning he was never out of position.
I support the signing because he adds much-needed depth, but I’m not getting too excited over it.
When has he played that position?
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/L/LiljRy20.htm
According to PRF…never. Contrary to popular belief, LG and RG are different positions and require different skill sets. Lilja fits best at LG.
Brian Waters may be able to play RG.
I completely agree with this
And have been saying it everywhere, but you don’t know he can’t play there, any more than you know Waters can play there.
By your logic, Waters hasn’t played RG either.
I’m just saying, you can’t say ‘he can’t play RG’ b/c he hasn’t played there before, but then claim Waters can when he hasn’t played there either.
It will get sorted out in camp, and yes, I think Waters should be our RG, but I’m not ready to say anyone can’t play anywhere.

WATERS HAS TO MOVE TO THE RG SPOT
Waters is much bigger and a better run blocker. Waters needs to move to RG, and let Lilja play LG.
I never though Lilja was a bad run blocker. He isn't great there, but the right side was a bigger issue
the concern with Lilja is a pretty nasty injury history. He’s had 3 seasons with 10+ games missed in 6 years, including never getting off the PUP in 2008.

so Lilja wasn’t going to argue with it.

I believe that roster bonus was guaranteed...
So they didn’t have a choice.
I haven't heard that
What I heard was that they paid it because he had been due that money last year, but agreed to majorly re-structure his deal because his knee injury wasn’t healing properly and his career might have been over. He was able to come back, so he got the money he would have been due.

I thought when he restructured it made that bonus guaranteed.
I could be wrong, though. But that’s typically how that works.
Fun fact fer ya
A team can say a player didn’t pass a physical even if he did.. passing is up to the team doctor.. But he did have a back injury during the super bowl so who knows

failed physical = we just want to part ways
teams wouldnt be interested in Fargas if he truly was out of shape.

Not content with O'Call
He’s peaked and what we got from him last year is probably close to his ceiling. We need some youth to develop.
Kansas City Chiefs - 2020 Team of the Decade
Hes 26
how do you know thats his ceiling? He went from the Pats practice squad, to starting for the Chiefs and giving up only 4.5 sacks. He was our most consistent lineman last season. We NEVER heard his name during a broadcast.

I agree, but I also don't think RT is a position of need at the moment.
Some competition somewhere down the line for him would def help, but there’s other things to address right now.
Youth like a 26 year old tackle that started 12 games and only allowed 4 sacks last year? And 2 false starts? And 0 holding penalties?
Yeah… where can we find a guy that young with that much potential? We better draft someone ASAP.

Albert | Lilja | Weigman | Waters | O’Callahan
looks pretty solid right now.

I agree with the ppl saying move waters to RG
Clearly, the LG protects the blind side and his strength should be pass protection (Lilja). Waters is great run blocker so he should be on the right side. The good part about this is that we are grooming Colin Brown over there at RG, so Waters can hold the position until he retires and then hopefully Brown can take over.
Awesome
Waters to RG. Weigmann at C, Now we don’t have such a huge O line need
The newest addition to the Eric Berry fanclub
Didnt BW play RG when Will Shields was here
i think he could handle it
Albert – Lilja – Wiegman – Waters – O Cal
Yeah, It makes the most sense
Waters can play RG and with his size he’s more suited for it
The newest addition to the Eric Berry fanclub
Shields played RG
But I defnitely think BW can handle his own there.
WELL I HOPE DUMB ANALYST STOP PROJECTING US TO TAKE TACKLE NOW
Either they’ll keep projecting us to take tackle, and say Albert should move to the right (which is retarded), or we’ll start to see more people for Berry, McClain, Williams, Bryant
O'Callahan to provide depth
I can’t figure it any other way than Albert moving to RT if we draft Okung, which means we would move O’Callahan down the depth chart.
So it would look like this: Okung, Waters, Weigmann, Lilja, Albert.
Is there another way to see it? Sound off please.
we might need one more young guy
but im comfortable going next season with albert, waters, weigman, lilja, ocalahan starting then you have a couple young swingmen in rudy c/g and ndukwe t/g plus still have young guys in colin brown and barry richardson
I cant wait to see the NEW ARROWHEAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chiefs will be competing for a division title in 2010
we need to draft a young center
but not early…maybe ted larson in the 4th/5th or Eric Olsen. Right now we have Albert 25, OCally 26, and Lilja 28,

I hope so
The D was in far worse shape than the O last year. Many games were lost because of the D…Dallas game comes to mind.

that is definitely my hope, with one early WR
Scott Pioli will find a way to make NT the biggest offseason priority.
KC Will Trade Derrick Johnson
The big O-Line mistake
…was not using a 4th round pick to select Gaither (Ravens starter) in the supplemental draft 3 years ago. Thanks, Carl.
hey, that pick got us will franklin!

11 Lineman on current roster...wih their ages:
Ocall- 27
Rudy – 27
Ndukwe-27
Lilja- 28
Albert- 25
Brown- 24
Richardson- 23
Waters- 33
Wiegman- 36
Harris- 25
Porter- 23
My point of this is, if the coaching staff can do their job. We SHOULD have a couple guys pan out from the current talent pool of that’s young. Yes we should draft a C or G early to ensure there is more raw TALENT. But damn, if we can develop a player or two for ONCE!! We should be set for a while. Waters has a couple years left. If Albert is our answer at LT…I like the odds of us developing one of these less heard of guys on our roster. IMO.
I'll tell you what
Colin Brown will be our starting RG at some point this season
The newest addition to the Eric Berry fanclub
Yeah, wish he could have gotten a little more experience last year
Instead of red-shirting the season. If he had, I would tend to agree with you. I’m betting on next season for him.
-1
I’ve said this 10X probably.
I’d be willing to bet that C. Brown gets cut before he starts a game for the Chiefs.
The likelihood of him making the team right now is really slim. It’s amazing how high AP is on the guy b/c Pioli drafted him last year.
I will say, I hope I’m wrong and he turns into a legit NFL OL.
yep, have the staff to do it. really like our OL for the first time in awhile
Scott Pioli will find a way to make NT the biggest offseason priority.

Im ready for august too but Im more ready for APRIL lol
Hopefully the only offensive position we draft is a couple of WR’s because now that is the biggest position of need. I would like to have a TE later if any at all mainly just because I would of loved to have Ben Watson come to KC but he carried a big price tag. There’s a couple of TE’s still on the market that can catch the ball to add a new weapon in the offense for Cassel but I just dont think it will happen. Glad to get Lilja though now we have a pretty decent line. MATT CASSEL HAS TO BE HAPPY THAT THEY ARE BUILDING HIM SOMETHNG TO WORK WITH NOW. It’d be nice to see what he could do when he isnt running for his life on every down. Im liking JD Walton as our center of the future.
really hoping for golden tate to really help out matt cassel...

Antony McCoy and Golden Tate are the answers
McCoy is an excellent pass and run blocker, and excellent yards after the catch. Tate is a receiver who can play wideout or slot. Has speed, strong hands, and can jump with the best of them. He is explosive, excellent yards after the catch, and is a tough sob. Those two would round the offense out perfectly!

This guy isnt that small
5’10 1/2 is taller than Steve Smith. His height means nothing. Have you seen this kids tape? Constantly leaping and snatching the ball at its highest point. Even caught a hail marry over 3 defenders.

pick 2a Center Pouncey
"It doesn't matter what you do in Life only that you do it the best you can. "
I'd love to have Pouncey, sarge,
but I saw something about the Raiders looking at him in the 1st. It’s an Al Davis thing. I could see someone taking Dez at their spot, but a C? Hope he gets to our 2a.
