Chiefs Had Dinner With NFL Draft Prospect Rolando McClain

The Kansas City Chiefs are keeping tabs on all possibilities for the fifth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. According to Chris Steuber of Scout.com, that includes Alabama LB Rolando McClain.

Per Steuber, McClain had dinner with representatives of the Chiefs on the night before his pro day on March 10th.

Star-divide

We've talked a little about that pro day

McClain ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.7 range which is about where folks expected him to run. He surprisingly didn't run at the NFL Combine so it was good to see him participating.

We've also talked about some questions that have been popping up regarding McClain. A NFL scout and ESPN's Chris Mortensen have questioned his effort on tape at times.

This dinner doesn't mean the Chiefs will draft McClain and it doesn't mean they won't. It just means that they're doing due diligence on all the available prospects whether that be at No. 5, 12, or 37 and beyond.

I think his effort was poor because

he had a bad hamstring since october. He played through it, and he didnt let many in on the injury.

I used to be in McClain's camp

but then someone here posted a youtube video of him. He seemed to tackle high WAY to much.

by timmer on Mar 16, 2010 1:04 PM CDT reply actions

thats funny

Part of his scouting report is that he has perfect tackling form and doesn’t get too high

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

Watch it and let me know what you think

I’m no scout but something doesn’t look right to me. He looks high or is using his arms to much or something. Maybe it’s something the coaches could fix…

by timmer on Mar 16, 2010 1:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Here it is...
Here is his youtube highlight tape

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miJwMCgaxKo

After watching it, I stick to my initial opinions that he seems to play slow for an inside linebacker. He does do a great job of diagnosing plays and seems to be a sure tackler for the most part, but I dont see anything from him that shows he can cover sideline-to-sideline to make tackles. Unless its a guy like Patrick Willis or Jon Beason who has freakish athleticism for that position, I dont see him worthy of the 5th overall pick…maybe more like the 15-20 range.

Ok, so, he started for three years

How many of those games does this tape cover? About 7 minutes worth.

Not only that, but he had a hamstring injury in all three of the games highlighted.

by BigRedChief on Mar 16, 2010 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

He's like a lot of guys in college

That are bigger and more or just as athletic as the guy he’s tackling: He gets sloppy at times and just slings them down.

He knows how to tackle perfectly, though, and will quickly realize its his only option as a pro.

by alakan81 on Mar 16, 2010 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Is it just me?

When i watch his film, he just seems like he’s not going all out. Some plays he’s in the backfield, and to the RB as they hand him the ball, but other times, it seems like he’s not going 100%. I wouldn’t mind having McClain, as long as the Crones can be managed, but i wouldn’t draft him at #5.

can deal with anyone. All 5 teams with top picks have said they’d deal ‘em. St.L takes Bradford. Clausen is left. Why wouldn’t someone trade with Detroit or Tampa to get ahead of the rat in DC?

by MasterBlaster7 on Mar 16, 2010 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually, my favorite trade down senario would be...

1) Suh
2) Okung
3) McCoy
4) Boluga
5) -—- Bradford, Thomas, Berry, and Classen all still available.

San Fran and Cleveland attempt to trade up to the Chiefs to take someone.
Seattle gets scared that they will lose out on Bradford and offers up their #14 Pick (I don’t want the 6th spot..we need MORE picks) + their Second rounder + the 3rd rounder …or Second rounder + 4th and 5th.

Seattle then picks 5th AND 6th … tey take Bradford AND Berry….. and we get to wait til 14th to pick.
At the 14 we can target McClain, Witherspoon, Iupati, Thomas, Williams, Pouncey etc etc… LOTS of good guys with mid-first round talent to choose from on both the O-Line and the D front 7. - Plus we get an additional pick at the top of the 2nd round AND either another 3rd or 4th adn 5th in a very deep draft. -- The more micks we can get the better, and if Okung, Suh and McCoy are gone in the top 4 there is no one that can help up on either side of the line that is worth the #5 or #6 overall. -

YESSS lol

I’m a fan of both Berry and McClain so I wouldn’t be opposed to drafting either. I don’t want all you Berry fans to get mad but if you think about it in the long run safeties are easier to come by in later rounds then a star linebacker. In this years draft there will most likely be a few in the second and third round worth looking at. Chad Jones (LSU), Reshad Jones (GA), Morgan Burnett (GA Tech), Nate Allen (USF) if you look at linebackers after McClain, Spikes, Washington, Butler, Sean Lee, and Navorro Bowman, there is a HUUUGE dropoff in talent. and for those of you who say McClain isn’t that talented imagine drafting someone who isnt even as close to him talent wise But for all you Berry fans I agree that would be a great pick to have. Im just sad to see so many people getting their hopes up for something that has hardly any chance of happening (Berry) come on guys get a second favorite so you wont be cursing the chiefs season already with bad fan support when your team doesnt select the player you want.

Is he that much better than what we can get in the second round? I know Berry is worth the pick over any other safety in the draft. But I just don’t think McClain is that much better than what we would draft with our 2b pick at LB. I am a little bias cause I really want Berry so I could be wrong but looking at value I don’t think McClain is the better one if your choosing between the two.

And I doubt he runs that slowly. While I think there’s significant downside to Spikes, it has almost nothing to do with his football play. I think his talent and skill are as good as anyone’s, and were it not for the character issue, I would think him worthy of a top-15 pick.

I completely disagre that Berry is worth the pick over any other safety in the draft....

Berry is at the top of a short list of about 3 guys all worth about the same.
Then there are another 3 or 4 guys that are a step lower.
This is a deep safety draft. There is talent to be had in the 2nd and 3rd rounds at safety for sure.

We don't...

have to trade down because he will be available with the 2a pick. The blagosphere is hyping this guy up too much. He isn’t explosive enough to warrent a 1st round consideration. He doesn’t have the speed or playmaking ability of a Mayo, Willis, Beason, or Urlacher. If you haven’t read it yet, check out my fanpost on the over-hyped value of inside linebackers posted a few days ago. Inside linebackers ranked the least important to NFL GMs in terms of positional value besides specialist. Only 7 have been taken in the first round the last 10 years and in 4 of those drafts none were taken. GMs will be much more interested in a player like Weatherspoon in the 1st becuase he has playmaking potential.

making an argument against Berry, I was making an argument agaisnt McClain. And safeties have a little more value since 11 have been taken in the 1st round in the last 10 years, 12 if you count Rolle. I’m saying McClain isn’t out of the Patrick Willis or Urlacher mold and will fall because of it. I think teams have him around the high 20s on their big board and a lot of teams picking there aren’t a match made in heaven for McClain. As well as the 3 teams picking ahead of us in the 2nd.
