Lions Bringing In OT Russell Okung For A Visit

Previously it had appeared the Redskins would be the biggest competition if the Chiefs were interested in OT Russell Okung. The Redskins are in need of an offensive tackle and the assumption was that the first two picks in the draft would be the big defensive tackles -- Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy.

That may still be the case but thanks to a report from NFL.com last week, Okung to the Lions is now on everyone's radar.

Our friends over at Pride of Detroit are waving the caution flag if you're making broad assumptions about Okung's visit to Detroit.

Star-divide

Before anybody takes Okung's visit as a sign that the Lions are drafting him or something like that, just remember that he is only one of 30 players that can come to Allen Park for a visit.  What's more, Gerald McCoy is alreadyscheduled to visit on Thursday following his arrival on Wednesday night, and you can bet other top prospects will make their way to Allen Park at some point in the next month or so as well.

Very true.

Also keep in mind that teams do bring in other players they're not interested in to throw other teams off their scent. So basically it's all a chess game at this point.

let Suh slip to us and the E. Berry fanclub will crap themselves on draft day!

Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....

I love it how every post now turns into can Suh play NT, or why we should/shouldn't draft Eric Berry.

This Okung thing and Holmgrens comments yesterday don’t mean a thing. It’s all just draft hoopla to keep other teams guessing.

I thought we already agreed that Suh isn't a good fit for a 34 D Tackle?

Plus he’ll never fall to 5.
And that 5 is too high to draft a safety, especially since this draft is so deep at safety.
So since Okung will be gone, the only logical playmaker left to take is Mr. Dez Bryant.
I’m glad we all agree!
Case closed.

Suh would be a great fit

He could be just what we need. Let crennel make him mean then you wont see Haley yell at him .

Lions may well take Okung as they need an OT

Most likely scenario :

1 Rams Bradford

2 Lions Okung

3 Tampa Suh

4 Redskins Clausen or Beluga

So at 5, KC will have a choice of Berry, McCoy, maybe Beluga, another OT, NT Williams, or any of the LB’s

I think OT is biggest need, but if Okung and Beluga are gone, defense may be the better choice

The big question is – whose voice is loudest – Weiss or Romeo?

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

agreed...

a lot more need at D for us…
and lions have to get a OL to protect the #1 pick last year…. Stafford… who got hurt a cpl times from the LT….

I get the "throwing other teams off the scent" thing

but when you have the #2 overall pick, who the heck are you trying to fool? Lions are legitimately interested in Okung as an option, and they should be. Doesn’t mean he’ll be the pick though.

no doubt they're INTERESTED but that's no guarantee of anything

not a matter of “fooling” anyone, you’re right … but considering they’ll have to invest the equivalent of the GNP of Peru for whoever they end up with, there’s no denying it’s in the best interests of everyone in Motor City to look as carefully as possible at every possible logical choice … and to look often as well

for Detroit, in makes sense to have Okung and Berry and Suh and McCoy and yes, others in for a visit … how do they look, how do they like the stadium, the city, the amenities, the training room … it’s a long-term arrangement for both parties, so they’d better make sure both sides are happy

and having 20-30 players come in also gives them that much more knowledge if they decide to trade down instead of taking BPA … this is what teams do, they look at EVERY option available

It's a combo of things here, really

They are turning over every possible stone, and looking at Okung, as they should.

They are also ‘throwing off the scent.’ And it does make some sense to do so. Let’s say Washington decides they have to have Okung at #2, and Detroit decides they’d be happy with Suh or McCoy. Then maybe they convince Wash to swap spots with them.

They’ll work out: Okung, Suh and McCoy at the very least.

But…they’re taking Suh, go ahead and mark it down.

by kcsno56 on Mar 16, 2010 10:30 AM CDT reply actions

I would agree with that.

If Suh is there at # 2 it will be very difficult to pass him over. Okung is the only other credible option if we do pick a player. And no, I don’t think we will be able to trade down.

Especially with Saffold looking very good at Tackle or Guard. He may be available at our # 34 pick. That would clinch it for me.
