Chiefs Reportedly Hosting Ryan Lilja Today

The Kansas City Chiefs made some moves over the weekend indicating they're not content with the offensive line.

First, Casey Wiegmann was signed.

Second, Hank Fraley was scheduled in for a visit. Fraley's visit has since been canceled because he's signing with the St. Louis Rams but it demonstrates the Chiefs feel they need an upgrade at that position.

Third, Ryan Lilja is coming in for a visit today.

Star-divide

The Chiefs reportedly contacted Lilja last week but told they didn't want to pay top dollar, which sounds about right if you look at the moves GM Scott Pioli has made since coming to Kansas City.

On the surface, Lilja seems to fit what the Chiefs are trying to do. He's a smaller lineman (apparently as Todd Haley likes) who has starting experience and isn't part of the "A" group of available linemen.

610 Sports' Nick Wright predicts a deal is done by Wednesday.

Lilja reportedly has other visits scheduled and, to me, it would make sense for him to make those visits. He's one of the top lineman still available in the second wave of free agency so maybe someone other than the Chiefs, who are focusing on value, will overpay?

Lilja is the only one, and we need to lock him up fast.

Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....

Few guys that may help if Lilja not signed.

Guard Chester Pitts from Houston 8yr veteran 6’3" 320 would be my 1st UFA choice.
Montrae Holland G from Dallas 7yr veteran 6’2" 322 would be 2nd UFA choice.
2 Guards that are RFA’s and are good are 1st choice G/Max-Jean Gilles Philly 6’4" 355 requires us to give Philly a 3rd rd pick. 2nd RFA choice is G/David Bass San Fran 6’4" 331 requires we give up a 2nd rd pick. No real good FA OL choices other than C/Seth Mckinney.
That leaves RFA’s LT/Charlie Johnson 6’4" 305 from the Colts we can give up our 2B pick for him which I would be fine with if we have no real interest in Okung or
Jermon Bushrod RFA Saints 6-5/315 for a 2B pick.
So if we plan to go for Berry with #5 then get WR/Golden Tate or C/G Maurkice Pauncey with 2A (if a FA LB picked up) then Charlie Johnson might be a good fit for LT otherwise get LT/Tony Washington with 2B. 3rd Rd Best NT available(Thomas,Troup or Joseph).4th rd WR/Jordan Shipley.5A ILB Darryl Sharpton, 5B Myron Lewis CB/FS, 5C LeRoy Vann, KR/PR.

i dont know what to think about this

I get the feeling that he wants to come back to KC considering he has already been told by pioli that they don’t want to pay top dollar. And yet he still come to work out anyway. I could be wrong though.

I think what I'm now looking for

Is a incoming / outgoing lish each day at the end of the day because there’s just too much going on during the day to work and keep tract of it all.

is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

This Chiefs team is closer to a new expansion team than it is a playoff contender, your expectations should match that.

I predict the Chiefs trade down from the number 5 pick.

Gonna have to

+14 this post. If we get him it looks like Okung won’t be the pick and Berry will be. Not going for Rolle and bringing in Olinmen? I think we could get a young stud in round 2 or 3 for the line and get the berry versatile Eric Berry w/ the 5 spot.

I hope we get him.

Cody is way over rated and only projected in 2nd rd because of all the teams going

I know we are lacking good olinemen

but to me he doesn’t seem to fit what we are trying to do. I assume our offense will be centered around TJ and Charles

by groundedchevy on Mar 15, 2010 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree, but Priority 1

should be protecting their investment in Cassel, which the line was doing a pretty terrible job of until later in the season. They weren’t exactly parting the Red Sea in the run game either. If it’s true the Chiefs are going to be using more zone-blocking than Lilja will probably do a better job in KC than he did in Indy.

by imur#1fan on Mar 15, 2010 12:29 PM CDT reply actions

We definately want to make this move.

Lilja fits the zone blocking scheme that we seem to be running, also, he’s 28, which means as linemen go, he’s in his prime still. He’s a hard worker, has champion experience, And, also, he’s a hometown guy. Taking Ryan Lilja will help our offensive line for years to come. While this may not be as big as signing Willie Roaf was a few years back, this could be in the same league of signing in my opinion.

Is going to be the deciding factor over money.

by multiplescorgasms on Mar 15, 2010 12:30 PM CDT reply actions

My gut says we sign him....

If he has a good workout. i doubt nickels and dimes get in the way of the deal. The chiefs are displaying a sense of urgency to upgrade positions of need. We continue to make moves in F.A. that will allow us to draft according to our board. I’m all for signing some older proven interior lineman….doesn’t mean we won’t draft OL in second round. But witih our first pick…..we should have a bit more flexibility.

Very Exciting friends!!

by KCLonghorn on Mar 15, 2010 12:31 PM CDT reply actions

Don't let him leave.....

KC without a contract, he would sure up that section of the line at least for the next 5 to 7 years. This will also lower the need to draft a linemen in the first round so we can sign E Berry.

I was kidding.

As much as I do get sick of seeing all of it, I understand it to a degree. I just feel it gets taken WAY too far, and that’s saying a lot cause I know it’s a lot worse in places other than AP. We were fortunate enough that while it’s not always followed, guidelines were put in place to tone it down some.

by Archyrr on Mar 15, 2010 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

And...

Considering most every team (including the Chiefs) have been trying to trade out of the top 5 for the last 5 years, that 1/25 ratio isn’t something to hang your hat on.

It is more possible at #5 than it is at #3, but it’s still very tough.

I do find it funny how many people on AP seem to think it’s just as easy as wanting to do it and it’ll get done. Odds severely stacked against a team from moving out of top 5.

Bradford falling to #5 would probably change that, but I don’t think he gets there.

by kcsno56 on Mar 15, 2010 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

It is a 1:24 ratio...

That means that there is a possibility… an impossibility would be 0 of some outlandish number.

While the probablitity of it occuring isn’t very high… there still is a window that they can trade out of the #5 position.

Yet if you go back 10 years you have a total of 7 teams jumping into the top 5. Granted less teams are jumping around in the top 10… and much of it has to do with rookies getting paid pretty damn good. There is still a possibility.

Point is… if there is a possibility one isn’t being delusional.

Go Chiefs!!!!

by ravenhawk on Mar 15, 2010 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I really hadn't thought about that...

I imagine that since this is an uncapped year that the likelihood would go up. The problem is finding someone that is willing to spend top 5 money. I don’t believe that Buffalo is willing to trade up as they aren’t big spenders.. The Redskins are already there… Oakland most likely won’t as they have their QB of the Future in Russel, and they don’t draft DT’s. Chicago has already spent their wad and doesn’t have a 1st round.

Maybe someone else steps up outside of the usual suspects. Usually people in the top 10 go for a top 5 prospect… it would be very unusual for someone outside of the top 10 to come into the top 5 (hasn’t occured in the past 10 years).

Go Chiefs!!!!

by ravenhawk on Mar 15, 2010 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I never said it was impossible

I never called you delusional. I think it is only delusional if you think it will happen, or even that it is likely to happen.

I’m all for hoping we can pull it off, and it is, possible, I just don’t know if anyone should count on something so unexpected.

Then again, I do know a lot of people that talk about what they’re going to do when they win the lottery.

by kcsno56 on Mar 15, 2010 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions

That is where my comment originated from this thread...

The poster commented about people being delusional if they think that it could possibly happen.

It is a possiblity and that is why people talk about it… do I expect it to happen??? Most likely not. Would I be exctatitc if it happened… hell ya!

Go Chiefs!!!!

Lilja

Young, solid, pass protecting guard, his run blocking lacks some ooomph. He’s at a reasonable price and it’s we’re not playing the Colts schedule so he could actually look better this year.

i’m staying away from that D word, or the word that rhymes with Terry – but there has to be a limit on how many rookies you have on your o-line, one shouldn’t have too many because Cassell could get killed, and you have to resign them all at once.

I would love to get Lilja for a decent price BUT....

I just hope all of these free agent signings don’t end up like last years and get cut before the season starts and then the players come back with sour grapes (ex. Amani Toomer’s comments about KC’s practice routines not being up to In his opinion " pro football standards" and Zach Thomas trying to take legal action against KC. And for those of you who don’t know there is a couple of good o-lineman left…like Montrae Holland from Dallas who appears to not be tendered but idk with the RFA deal going on but most sites say he’s UFA. I know that O-Lineman is going to be a priority in the draft, but I think I’m like everyone else in the area lol we want Berry. But to be honest I’d be just as happy with Rolando McClain at MLB because there are reports out there saying he’s projecting as mainly a weak side defender in the middle of a 3-4..which means perfect to be next to Williams or Johnson. Although I would LOVE to get Berry in the draft…Rolando McClain is a safer piece to build around. Plus Chiefs fans you KNOW the donkeys want him. and oh yeah and how is everyone feeling about not having to see that #21 chargers jersey anymore LOL

This would be HUGE for our O-line and would really change our draft priorities, enabeling us to take players @ skill positons early and hold off on o-line until the later rounds!
An O-line of Albert, Waters, Weigman, Lilja and O’Calaghan would go a long way to help us open up this offense and solidify our offensive identity

New FA wish list now that Sean Jones signed with Buccaneers

NT/Gerard Warren to provide competition and possibly start over Shaun Smith(who has missed alot of games over the years).
Safety Gibril Wilson(since Sean Jones is gone) to provide veteran leadership and depth in secondary.
OLB/Joey Porter(provides better pass rush than Vrabel) or Pisa Tinoisamoa to start over Vrabel(who is getting old) and provide depth/competition
If they trade DJ (Which I hope they don’t) then get ILB/Akin Ayodele or Antonio Pierce

So get at least 2 of these guys and we are ready for the draft to fill in missing parts, which after these pickups is the following.
LT,slot WR,CB,C,Safety,TE and NT’s of future.
