Around SBN: Four TCU Football Players Among 17 Arrested In Drug Ring

Our Starting Defense after the Draft

DEFENSE:

Flowers                                         Jackson       Cody        Dorsey                                        Berry

                                       Vrabel              Johnson            Williams          Hali

                                                            Page                  Washington

Explanation:

Defense:

This is how I envision our starting defense looking like. You probably will first notice that I have Eric Berry at cornerback. With all this talk about being a safety, nobody has taken notice that Berry has the athleticism/skills to play any position in the secondary. He would be much more useful at cornerback and he would shine there as well. This would give us a great nickle back as well in Brandon Carr. I'm moving Donald Washington to safety because I have heard great things about him but he is raw. He has the athleticism to play cornerback but I believe he could make the transition to safety. I'm still holding out hope that DaJuan Morgan can emerge as a starter but it could be an interesting position battle in training camp. I would love to see Terrence Cody in the middle of our line, where he could plug up blockers and allow our below average lineback corp to make plays. I don't see a lot of difference in our linebackers this year but Corey Mays and Andy Studebaker provide good depth. My only concern is Mike Vrabel, who I see as being a liability as a full-time starter. It would be great to find a replacement for him in the draft. If somehow we don't pick up Cody, I would look to draft someone like LB Jerry Hughes, a player that can get to the quarterback and is very solid against the run. I honestly can only see about two players from this draft being a starter on defense. I would devote our first two picks to defense definitely, and then start looking at upgrades to wide receiver and offensive line for the next two.

And we let a solid corner in Carr slip to the bench... yet start Washington at safety?

I don’t like it. I don’t like it at all.

Berry has excelled at the safety position. No need to mess with stuff that isn’t broken.

exactly...

instead of moving a S to CB and a CB to S… let everyone play the positions they were drafted for

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

C'mon man.

That argument is getting tired.

Berry is considered by most to be the best safety to come out of college in the last 5-6 years. A lot of professional analysts have him as a top 3 overall prospect.

How is it that DE, NT, LB, and CB are all believed to be ok top 5 pick positions… but not S? No position is restricted from being a #5 overall, unless it’s a kicker.

Long snapper, punter, center, backup QB, etc

IMO at 5 it’s not as much about his position, it’s if he is a gamer, if he has skills, if he is a playmaker. Berry fits all of those.

by BAMFSpecialOps on Mar 15, 2010 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions

agreed

3-4DE’s don’t have a lot of value in the top 5 either, but KC has TWO of those…

positional value is WAY overrated, and not of huge concern to Pioli, apparently

So you wouldn't want a shutdown corner

for the money we are about to plunk down on Berry

I really dislike all of the talk

about drafting a guy just to move someone else to a different position where it will be an ‘upgrade or everyone will thrive’

Berry could play corner on certain plays, keeping Carr/Flowers on the field. IF Washington is supposed to be the nickel or #2 corner of the future, I can’t see Pioli/Haley/Crennel pushing him farther down the depth chart and giving him less playing time.

by BAMFSpecialOps on Mar 15, 2010 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

If we want a shutdown corner,

then we should draft a corner, not a safety.

by WoodyardBBQ on Mar 15, 2010 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions

What if the safety can shut down half of the field?

Not going to say he is the next Reed of he as good as Reed, but IF Berry turns out close to Reed our defense could be very flexible.

by BAMFSpecialOps on Mar 15, 2010 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions

So you wouldn't want a ball hawking safety?

And leave Berry at his most natural position?

Most people

are forgetting how much a good cover safety improves your CBs chances of making great plays. It’s easier to be aggressive when you have that help over the top.

So Free safety?

Which again was not exactly the position Berry played at Tennessee

move Page over to the SS to take advantage of his coverage and hitting ability. While allowing Berry to roam to the ball and clean up plays.

Kam definitely has impressive size and athleticism,

But I think scheme has an important part to play in it. We’re already running a 4 LB set. We already had a SS that wanted to play the run more than the pass, and he got cut.

Official member of the "Draft Eric Berry" fan club... But I'm not changing my picture, dammit!

by Red N Gold Beast on Mar 15, 2010 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

Kam is a lot like a poor mans Mays in this draft. We got some younger guys that could go for that SS spot

by BAMFSpecialOps on Mar 15, 2010 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Not always

And Berry’s skills are awesome, but much more suited for either safety position than for corner, so saying it’s between having him as a shutdown corner or a safety is probably something of a false choice. It’s more like it’d be between having him as a terrific safety or an above-average cornerback.

Berry and Page at Safety Make Brandon Carr a Good Corner

I’ll bet with Eric Berry and Jarrad Page at the safety positions instead of Mike Brown and Jon McGraw that everyone will suddenly like Brandon Carr at CB a lot more than they did last year!

I don't know that Micah Johnson would push Mays out at ILB.

We could still draft some solid safeties in the 4th and 5th maybe

keep Berry at safety, let washington grow and bloom at nickel.

Just because many scouts say Berry can play CB

Doesn’t make him a CB. And you’re not drafting him at #5 to play a position he hasn’t played much.

So basically, my point is, this isn’t happening.

We take him #5, he’s our starting SS, and would probably be one of the better ones in the league right away.

Indeed

Flowers can do decent at man with over the top help, but his size really limits what he can do

by BAMFSpecialOps on Mar 15, 2010 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Think about it....

As you all have heard, Brandon Flowers is training with Eric Berry. Why would a CB be training with a Safety? Flowers is obviously there to see if Berry has the skills to play cornerback. From what I have heard, Eric Berry has the skills to be a shutdown corner. What would you rather have based on last year. Carr was exposed way to many times and is better suited to be our nickel. While I do believe our safeties were a liability last year, I think it was Carr that was victimized the most.

"Why would a CB be training with a Safety?"

Because defensive backs train together all the time. A big difference between corners and safeties is that most safeties play their best ball when the ball is in front of them, so they don’t have to track the ball over their shoulders in man coverage and trail routes.

Yeah...

I think we all have to get over DJ as a starter for our team. If he was every going to be the player we need him to be, he would have showed it by now. I think he is going to be traded.

1. Suh will fall to us at 5
2. McClain will fall to us at 2a
3. The Chiefs will trade DJ and Dorsey

I'm still hoping for DJ

More than likely it’s just a waste, but with Crennel and some time in the 3-4 I’m hoping he can adjust. His speed/coverage skills could really help out our ILBs

Of course Free Agency signings could change everything. It’s just too early to project, but I am anyway. Bored.

why would we put berry at CB and washington at S? washington isnt a better player than carr…. we want the best players on the field at all times and that includes carr. as for derrick johnson at ILB… thats fine. but demarrio williams and him play the same spot at the ILB they are both weak side ILB because they are faster and smaller it doesnt make sense for both of them to be on the field at the same time. anything can happen but the only true starters i see for now is … flowers, carr, dorsey, jackson, hali, and most likely vrabel and page.
