Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Okay, Take Berry

I've been a vocal opponent of selecting Eric Berry. The idea of taking a safety so early was bizarre to me when we have positions of greater need that could be filled by guys on the board when we pick. This situation has, to a good degree, now changed. I would have selected an LT with the first pick, but Albert seems to be locked in since we've signed a C and are persuing Gards as we speak(read?).

ILB would appear to me to be the next best place to go, and Rolando McClain should be available. The problem here is that our best 2a pick is probably Spikes, an ILB. I could see DT Cody go here but I see us waiting for a guy like Troup later on. OLB would seem to be the next best option with the first pick as far as need is concerned. Sergio Kindle would be the selction if that route were taken but that is a huge reach for a guy who is another converted DE. Fielding two DE to LB converts in your line up essentially turns your 4-3 into a 5-2, negating the purpose of a 3-4 altogether. Now we're into territory where any pick would be a reach, except one: Mr. Berry.

It's either McClain - Cody or Berry - Spikes in my mind. (1 Berry 2. Spikes 3. Cody would be the steal of a lifetime is cody slipped back that far)

I'd be enthused with either combination, but the latter I find to be a better value.

So there it is, I half-ass endorse selecting Eric Berry at no.5

That said, I doubt Pioli does it.

Based on

what I’m seeing in FA now, it appears that Pioli is starting to address needs with the FA pick-ups (NT, RB, OL) to set us up to have room in the draft to take a couple of “luxury” picks.

I’m starting to sense that the Berry pick is becoming a real possibility at this point. I wouldn’t be disappointed with that at all. I’m also thinking we will grab a WR with one of the 2nd rounders, which would really help the offense….

by Hail2DaChiefs on Mar 14, 2010 9:40 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed.

While I’ve been all for drafting Berry since last October, I never truly though Pioli would commit to him at #5 with a broken OL and no NT.

The focus seems to be on stop gapping right now. He’s looking at/addressing all positions in FA except one… safety. At this point I really think he’s going to draft Berry if he’s there at #5.

Maybe...

OL is getting some stop gaps through FA. If Lilja works out, I highly doubt our #5 pick will go to OL. Besides… Okung is likely to go to either DET or WAS. Plus, we’re going after a more athletic line than just a bunch of big bodies to block. Bruce Campbell might slip into the 2nd round. That guy’s a work out beast.

Williams won’t be an impossible pick, as we’ve both pondered before, since Pioli has shown he’s not afraid to reach if he thinks his guy is there. But again, the addition of Shaun Smith makes you doubt that Pioli is going for an immediate starter at NT. Granted, it’s not out of the realm of possibility, since Smith isn’t an ideal starter, but he could stop gap until a later pick is developed to take over.

All signs point to Pioli planning to get a starting safety in the draft. He ignored Antrel Rolle (a young player approaching his prime) and Darren Sharper (a solid vet that can still produce)… he’s not looking at FA for his starting safety. If Berry is there at #5, I really think that’s who Pioli will take.

I can see us going for a RT w the fifth overall

but not a LT. What I mean is that its not an easy transition going from LT to RT and there is a guy in this draft that is considered a top 10 tackle who has been playing RT at Oklahoma, Trent Williams. That said, I’m actually really happy with OCallaghan, but he would be the odd man out if Pioli feels that the value pick there is RT. I too am skeptical about Pioli going safety this high. I really think we will be able to trade down and likely will.

I just don't understand this...
I really think we will be able to trade down and likely will.

It’s certainly possible, but I don’t think how anyone could see this as likely. History just points against it, and the fact that this is the last set of rookie contracts ever dished out before the new CBA gets done, this probably will be the most expensive draft class ever.

by kcsno56 on Mar 15, 2010 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Which is exactly why teams will be MORE likely to trade up

Think about it. Who is gonna want to give up a top five or ten pick in future years if they come relatively cheap? The reason people want to trade down is because it hamstrings bad teams with large contracts on questionable players. Once a new CBA is struck and, assuming a rookie salary cap, those teams in the top five or ten picks won’t be as willing to trade down because they’ll want that elite talent. It will change the draft value chart because you’ll be able to get elite talent for pennies on the current dollar.

Those teams that don’t have a top 10 pick, and do not want their franchises to suffer the woeful 4-12 season just to get a crack at a franchise QB (say a team like the vikingsfor arguments sake) are gonna see this as the last chance to trade up into the top ten for a potentially elite franchise QB. In future years, because teams won’t WANT to get out of the top five because of money involved, they will demand much higher draft pick compensation for those top talents. At least, thats the way I see it. I could be wrong.

If we get Berry I'll be happy

if not I’m sure I’ll still be happy since there are so many good players coming out to the draft.

the only thing with that is S.P said that he was looking for a starting Safety so it is going come somehow weather that’s in the draft or free agency based on whats out there in FA, I think we have to wait til the draft!

just thinking about berry

why would it matter to anyone if he was a reach? tyson was a huge reach and pioli pulled the trigger…he doesnt care about reach and how is berry a reach anyway he is the best in his position and we need a safety cause morgan still hasnt stepped up…c’mon draft em! I would love to see Berry in red & gold…

by KEANEKONG on Mar 14, 2010 10:47 PM CDT reply actions

But he's not a reach...

Most boards have had him as a 3rd overall talent… and it’s been like that since December.

That's exactly what I've been thinking!

The Niners have the 13th & 17th picks. I don’t think they’d trade up for Berry, but they do need a QB and Claussen may be there at #5 for a bidding war between Seattle, Cleveland (maybe), Buffalo and San Fran. The Niners could trump all others by offering up the 13th & 17th overall. We could use those two picks to take Earl Thomas & McClain (or Weatherspoon) & essentially fill two holes for about the same money that the #5 pick would command.

Of course I’m a fan and I’m dreaming here, so it’s probably not a realistic scenario. :) And I’d be quite happy with staying at #5 to select Berry too. High value position or not, the guy is simply a natural football player. I think he’d be a top 10 NFL safety in his first season.

This year will be better

by jmcgoblue on Mar 15, 2010 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Niners have Alex Smith and David Carr. They don't want a QB.

If they took another QB they would be moving backwards, they would have 3 1st round QBs on the roster!!! They are better served developing these guys and moving forward. They may swap one of those firsts and a 2nd (and maybe a 3rd) for our #5 to grab Berry. That would allow them to get the guy the want and still have another 1st. That would be VERY attractive to me if I were the Niners GM.

I thought they were disappointed with Smith last year?

I see your point, but if they don’t think either of those guys have a bright future, and they like Claussen, I don’t think they would be afraid to move up and take him. It doesn’t matter where those other guys were taken if they aren’t working out now.

SillyHatDay

You really put some thought into that post. I appreciate your thought process there. Ideally when you pick in first round you want someone who will be a starter and will make an impact unless you’re building the heart of your OL or DL.

Berry’s been my favorite at #5 but I didn’t know what the logic behind that pick is unless we’re looking for an impact player to boost our pass defense or a case cannot be made for a WR option or OL option. I’m tending to believe that except for a late pick with a strong upside, probably Pioli will not draft a WR or NT now. NT and WR were needs that have been at least partially met.

There really isn’t a NT available at #5 that’s worth that high of pick. So the only thing that I can see that will prevent us from taking Berry is either an OLB or a superman ILB. Unless we fill the LB holes in FA, I see Pioli making a move in that direction before Berry. If we see Pioli signing a safety in the next few weeks, we probably will not go S at #5. Time will tell. I anxiously await the daily FA reports to see how the draft will develop.

Josh Looney Tweeted me a few days ago that he sees Pioli going offense this year since last year was heavy on D. He could be intentionally leaking that info or not. We shall see.

Can i still get a ticket on the Berry bandwagon

Not because im that in love with Berry but because i think it is the chiefs biggest need and i dont see another player that really fits there if we are still at #5. if they bring in Lilja this pretty much insures that it wont be a lt and taking Mcclain at #5 would be a pretty big reach plus i just cant see Pioli paying a ilb top 5 money when a good starter can be had later, much cheaper in this draft.

I cant wait to see the NEW ARROWHEAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been back and forth on Berry

But we need a good FS for our future, not just now. If Berry is at #5 they will draft him IMO.
Draft Berry, Tate, Walton, and Linval Joseph, and even Micah Johnson with our 4th rounder.
That’s 5 starters with the first 5 picks.
