Outside the Box - Carlos Dunlap
Carlos Dunlap FLA 6'6" 277 lbs could play OLB in the 1 and 2nd down, Slide to Inside at DE or DT spot in the Nickel. Slow out of the 3 point but could maybe Read and React in the KC defenses better than others in this draft. Would play opposite Hali and increase the QB pressure and KC sack total. Dunlap could mix in both the 3-4 end and the 3-4 OLB spots. Needs some grooming and some attitude adjustment. I see Vrabel and Crennel and a little dos of Haley might suit this player very well. Yes, some negatives but a whole ton of upside like 6'6 277 lbs worth.

•Athletic, agile
•Instinctive - knows how to locate the ball
•Sheds blockers pretty well
•Played well for a major football program

We have resigned Vrabel for a year. Not a blatant plug for this guy but maybe a guy on the Pioli radar. Dunlap was 290 lbs earlier this season, He might be adjusting to the 3-4 OLB spot with his weight down to 277. Maybe Dunlap would be worth a pick.

If we had two firsts
this guy could be a beast in the 3-4
Fortunately we’ll be spending our #5 on Eric Berry

Where would you go with a trade down?
position maybe

I don't know about that.
With us getting Smith from Cleveland, and us starting to get some O-line help in free agency, I think they may go for more of a skill player with the 1st round pick. A WR wouldn’t surprise me at all or a defensive back.
If we get an extra 2nd rounder from a trade down, I think it would be wise to do that and take advantage of the depth of this draft to pick up help in the trenches in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

+1
This guy has trouble written all over him. Even on the field he is the classic “I’m only going to give half ass effort because I’m physically gifted” type of player. These Florida defensive ends have not panned out in the NFL.
1. Suh will fall to us at 5
2. McClain will fall to us at 2a
3. The Chiefs will trade DJ and Dorsey

His missing the game impacted the final result.
Agreed, but another mistake made by many college age kids :)

Well Brandon Graham would be 2nd best OLB for Chiefs
1. His name is Brandon
2. He is 6’1 255 lbs

I'm in favor of Graham, or someone like him.
Dunlap just looks like a 4-3 DE to me. And I don’t want a guy with a reputation for taking plays off.
It doesn't work for me (and not because I want Berry)
If you draft a guy in the first coming off a 4-12 season he is going to be expected to be an every down player. This would be a problem. I don’t think you can take Vrabel’s leadership and experience off the field to put a 6’7" 277 lb college DE out there at OLB. Especially when our other OLB is a converted DE who mainly rushes the passer. Teams would pick us apart in the flats. You can’t start him a DE in the base because we have our previous 2 top 5 picks playing there. So basically you would be using your first round pick on a pass rush specialist that would only come in on clear passing downs. When you add the “attitude” questions to the equation it’s just too much for me. Even if Berry’s off the board or we trade down.

Thanks
Seems maybe that Vrabel/Studebaker are the best bets at that OLB spot.
I don’t see any FA’s this year. Just kicking rocks :)

Maybe later in the draft.
If Hali is injured I don’t know we have an answer right now to generate that pass rush.

I agree
I think somewhere in the mid rounds we have to get somebody that can come in on third and long and rush the outside opposite Hali.

So would Carlos be interesting with the 5th pick now as an OLB tweener?
