7 Round live draft on MTD. First two rounds today.

Hey guys i'm the rep for the Chiefs in the 7 round mock on MTD and was just wanting to let everyone know and keep people updated on how this has played out. I'll be updating this post but feel free to come by and check out the draft.

http://www.mockingthedraft.com/2010/3/13/1371037/7-round-live-mock-draft-thread

Star-divide

The first four picks were: Suh, Okung, McCoy, Bulaga. So with the 5th overall pick i selected Eric Berry Safety Tennessee. Pursued trade back opportunities but none were available as such this is the only player left on the board that is not a reach at a position of need.

I'll update this same post as i make a pick in each round. Hopefully you guys stop by and have some good discussions about the draft with people that know their teams. Have a good day.

Round 1 - Eric Berry SS Tennessee

With Bulaga, Okung, and Suh all gone i had to pick BPA without reaching. Eric Berry is possibly the most talented player in the draft and fits a big need for the Chiefs. He steps in immediately and improves a struggling safety position. Should make Brandon Carr and Jarrod Page look much better

Round 2- 1st pick - Golden Tate WR Notre Dame

With Jerry Hughes and Maurkice Pouncey off the board i again went BPA in a position of need. Tate can play the slot and return kicks for us. I did not want to reach for Cody and didn't feel any other players were worthy to be picked this high.

2nd pick - Cam Thomas NT North Carolina

With a desperate need to upgrade the NT and C position this was a tough choice. Cam Thomas has all the potential to be a Great NT and i believe that Crennel will make him just that. Cam will probably compete with Smith for the starting job and hopefully be the starter.

Round 3 J.D. Walton C Baylor

The Chiefs are able to pick up the second best Center in the draft in the 3rd round, not bad at all. Walton is talented enough to start his first year but luckily he should be able to sit behind Weigman and learn the position from one of the best players in the league (especially at playing zone center)

To bad you couldn’t get a good offer to trade down with both QB’s on the board. Berry is a solid pick though.

thanks

yeah nobody is wanting to lose valuable picks in this draft. All of the talent in the first 2 rounds is simply astonishing.

I hear you. The two QB’s might have something to do with it. If it was just one QB, you may have seen more action.

Colt McCoy screws things up

Teams may pass on a QB in round 1 and try McCoy in the 2nd with a much lower pricetag

Raiders traded up in to select Pouncey at pick 26

Sucks because i was going to try and trade up to the Jets spot and take him. Oakland now has a great O Line selecting Trent Williams with their 1st pick and now Pouncey.

Still no trade downs in the second

Most of my preferred options were gone but Golden Tate did fall to us and I took him with our 2a pick.

I hope we don’t go WR that high, but his value is hard to pass on. Right now, I am worried that the holes on o-line and D7 are not getting addressed.

i am too

the players i wanted in the front 7 were gone. No centers or guards worthy of 2a. Cody isn’t worth 2a. I have 2b and 3 though to fix the middle of our lines.

Hughes

Ya, I was just thinking about him with 2a – but Tate is solid; I like the Weiss connection. And it fills a big need @ slot receiver.

Cody was a viable option. Do you see a NT you like later in the draft?

Merlinnj

by merlinnj on Mar 13, 2010 3:34 PM CST up reply actions

Just picked up Cam Thomas with our 2b pick. I think Cam is more the style of NT that Pioli likes. Cam is smaller with better lateral movement than Cody is. Cam is more raw and will need more couching but i think Cam will be the better NT at the next level.

Are you assuming we don’t need a guard? I havn’t checked the picks, are Assamoah or Mike Johnson available? Johnson in particular would be a great choice for a zbs scheme. mmm scratching my memory. What are you thinking with the ILB need? Right now, you filled FS, NT and slot WR. You are looking at centers and tackles. Plus, I think CB and OLB,.

Merlinnj

by merlinnj on Mar 13, 2010 4:07 PM CST up reply actions

I think we are good at G because i believe we sign Lilja on monday. Even without Lilja we have Ndukwe who i think was a good G for the Dolphins before they moved him to Tackle. ILB i really only like Micah Johnson and i’d probably target him in the 4th or 5th. CB isn’t something i particularly think we need to upgrade but the value there is so good this far in the draft. OLB i just don’t think we get enough pressure from Vrabel / Stude.

The first 3 picks of the draft will be defense. Pioli loves him some defense.

by ChiefsfanJon on Mar 13, 2010 4:13 PM CST up reply actions

Also at ILB i’d hope we grab Andra Davis from the Broncos. He is experienced and a sound tackler that takes good angles.

by ChiefsfanJon on Mar 13, 2010 4:16 PM CST up reply actions

Wow, that’s high for Johnson. I like the idea of signing Lilja and Andra Davis. If both of those things happen I like better where you are going with this. If you assume Andra Davis, then Micah Johnson may not make sense. They are both the strong ILB types. Maybe someone like Pat Angerer may make more sense.

Merlinnj

by merlinnj on Mar 13, 2010 4:25 PM CST up reply actions

yeah i agree. I won’t go Micah if we sign Davis. Luckily the next 2 rounds aren’t until next weekend so i have time to see what happens. TE also must be considered. Dickson intrigues me with his 4.4 speed and 43 inch vertical.

The first 3 picks of the draft will be defense. Pioli loves him some defense.

by ChiefsfanJon on Mar 13, 2010 4:26 PM CST up reply actions

Dickson is someone on my radar as well. It’s hard to justify going both WR and TE pretty high with all the holes on O-line and D7. Value has to be part of the equation as well though and he is a good looking prospect.

Yes

he is experienced in a ZBS and he is a strong smart player. Walton is my favorite center prospect and probably 4th best guard imo.

I agree. I think it’s a solid, reasonable draft.

Merlinnj

by merlinnj on Mar 13, 2010 4:38 PM CST up reply actions

Yes i agree

But our O-Line holes are really just Center (starter) and Tackle (depth) imo. I am comfortable with:

Albert
Waters
Rookie
Lilja or Ndukwe
O Cally

Our front 7 needs a NT and then an ILB immediately. I think we could use a better OLB to get more pressure but that can be addressed later.

Yep. sigh. Jerry Hughes is a beast and wouldn’t be passed on. I don’t like taking a WR in the 2nd with our wholes but i thought i could get Cam with 2b and i believe Cam is better than Cody.

Well i would be comfortable with Ndukwe starting at RG also. Or drafting a guard in round 4. I like Sergio Render in the 4th or 5th.

3rd-4th

Look for Marshall Newhouse, G, TCU. Might be a slight reach in 3rd, great pick in 4th. Hope you see this before 3rd round pick.

Yeah i’m hoping he falls to 4th. I have plans for the 3rd already. I think we have sufficient depth at G but at tackle depth is lacking.

i wouldnt say that Cody is a reach anymore...

his weight issues dropped him to the second round for sure, but he showed up alot lighter at alabama’s pro day which means he will do whatever it takes. His ability is unquestioned…only his weight and work habits.

Good draft

I would be happy with this draft but I would have rather seen Cody with the 2a pick and Shipley with the 2b pick. I think Shipley is a better returner option and we have urban and shipley that can fight for the slot reciever.

lots of non-fits or fills of secondary needs. What are you thinking at SS? Do you want to play Berry there or FS? The question is, are you open to taking another safety?

Merlinnj

by merlinnj on Mar 13, 2010 4:48 PM CST up reply actions

probably not.

I would put Berry at FS and move Page over to SS but that is my opinion.

by ChiefsfanJon on Mar 13, 2010 4:49 PM CST up reply actions

Berry is not really a SS. That’s one of the drawbacks to taking him at #5. Based on that list, if Walton is not there you have to pivot and go for something like a TE. The Chiefs seem to be high on McCoy. So, you may have to consider him, Dickson or Pitta if you go TE.

Is this at the start Round 3?
