March 14th A Big Day For Chiefs G Brian Waters

The Kansas City Chiefs have been making moves to improve the offensive line. One player who has been a fixture on the offensive line for the better part of the decade has a big day coming tomorrow.

Brian Waters has a $2 million roster bonus due tomorrow, according to Adam Caplan of Scout.com.

Star-divide

Waters is turning 33 years old so I would say any big roster bonus day is important for him.

This move doesn't necessarily mean anything one way or the other. For example, last week the Jets released Thomas Jones because of an impending roster bonus. Then this week the Colts paid Ryan Lilja a $1.7 million roster bonus and then released him.

That said, it does at least suggest that the Chiefs plan on retaining Waters for the time being. If any roster move like a release or a trade were to happen, it would usually occurs before that date.

I do think the Chiefs will keep Waters in 2010 though I do wonder whether someone like Chan Gailey could use a veteran offensive lineman. The Bills have one of the worst offensive line situations in football and he might be interested in a stop-gap.

It may seem unlikely (and it probably is as are all hypothetical trades in the NFL) but the Chiefs have shown they're willing to release big name Chiefs if the price is right.

Nonsense

I think that idea of releasing Brian Waters is absurd!! If the Chiefs let go of another valued and proven player I will snap (see: Jared Allen, Bernard Pollard, Andre Rison, Larry Johnson – Just Kidding). Brian Waters is only 33 and if they release him after brining in Casey Weigmann (37 yr old dinosaur) they have to be crazy. I don’t think his trade value would equal his value to our team.

I tend to agree

The Chiefs aren’t in the business of giving up quality offensive linemen.

Okay...sure...

Then I shall also agree to agree with upamtn agreeing that it is correct to agree that Joel’s original agreement with KCFAN10’s statement was agreeable to me as well.
…I think…

Though if a good trade offer comes their way

I think they would take it. Would also give them more money to sign Lilja assuming he checks out ok and allows them to play Lilja at his more natural LG position.

Waters to Bills for 3rd rounder and 5th rounder

Would do that deal in a minute, then sign Lilja and Fraley

yeah as would I, I just doubt buffalo would

KC Will Trade Derrick Johnson

by SDChief on Mar 13, 2010 1:44 PM CST up reply actions

WHY?

Do you HONESTLY believe you will replace BW with either one of those picks? Why on earth is everyone so anxious to lose our best Lineman? Keep Waters, sign Lilja, get a center in the later rounds (that CAN be done) to replace Casey in a year or two, get a big LT with the 1, Move Albert to the RT.
Now look at our line with JC and TJ running behind it!!! Wow.
But it can’t be if Waters goes.

by ARROWHEADSHANE on Mar 13, 2010 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

Waters...

hasn’t preformed well in the last 2 seasons. I would be down to trade Brian and sign Lilja. He fits the scheme better and is younger. I would pay him the roster bonus though, the guy deserves for being loyal for so many years.

1. Suh will fall to us at 5
2. McClain will fall to us at 2a
3. The Chiefs will trade DJ and Dorsey

So you don't want to touch Waters...

But you want to move Albert? WTF?

Don't see it happening.

Brian Waters is too valuable to this offense to trade him.

I like PI

More Than An Offensive Lineman

Brian Waters has tremendous value to the city and the locker room. Now let’s add his value as a guard, plus his ability to move to center if needed, then add what he can bring to our young lineman in the way of mentoring, and finally being back beside another member of one of the best offensive lines in recent history (Wiegmann). It just doesn’t make sense for him to be anywhere else besides KC.

waters to bills for 2nd

that wouldbe a good trade. If anything just to hear whitlock cry

The Chiefs have made it clear that Waters is a leader

Haley/Pioli think Waters is a winner and a leader. If he was released, it would be a total shock. They’ve talked about him as a potential center. He isn’t going anywhere. The question is what other veterans will they sign before the draft?

by ChiefConcern on Mar 13, 2010 12:07 PM CST reply actions

I would like to keep him

But if a 2nd were offered we’d be fools not to take it! You can find a guard in the 2nd that is serviceable at the least and probably an answer in the long term.

by Chiefs2SB10 on Mar 13, 2010 12:27 PM CST reply actions

Not gunna happen...

Maybe 5 years ago…but not coming off his worst season since probably his rookie. BW is only of the last “True Chiefs” and I’d be pissed if they cut him. But the guy’s skills are on the decline…no team would give up a second for an old LG.

I’d take a 6th for him and jump for joy. But no one will offer anything for a done guy like Brian. I doubt they cut him, though, as he does have mentoring/leadership role, and is still, sadly, our best Guard, even though he’s done.

Waters is old but still good

by WarWolf on Mar 13, 2010 1:17 PM CST reply actions

Water's value is more than just playing guard.

Yeah, he’s a former Pro Bowl player, and still one of the best at his position, but he is also defintitely one of the “right 53” that our leadership refers too. He could have sulked and demanded a trade, or gave a half-hearted effort, after his conversation gone bad with Haley, but he handled it with class, is a great leader to a roster of young players (how many times did he huddle up with the players to fire them up or give inspiration?) and is such a valuable part of the City of Kansas City, and the entire NFL, for that part. He can still play at a high level, and has all of the intangibles this team’s leadership reportedly wants. I just can’t see them letting him walk. A sidenote: I received a warning from AP about a post I made last night. It was totally in fun, but if it offended anyone, I am truly sorry. I likely did cross the line, and I also apologize to the wonderful people that manage this website, and I am glad to be part of it.

This would send the wrong message to your locker room as well as create a hole they do not need to create.

Knowing the day is nearing I would be disappointed if this happened this year. If they do, they have to go get a OT on the 1st pick.
The line would then look like Okung, Albert, Weigmann, RG, and O’Callaghan with only Niswanger and Ikechuku as the only proven depth. It’s 1 year too early.
