Ryan Lilja Will Have Company On Monday's Visit To The Chiefs

Within the past hour, we've received word that the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms on a one year contract with center Casey Wiegmann. We also heard that the Chiefs are hosting free agent lineman Ryan Lilja on Monday.

Well, Lilja will have some company. Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports the Chiefs will be hosting offensive lineman Hank Fraley on Monday as well.

We just wrote a story on Fraley this afternoon about the Chiefs interest in him.

Fraley was originally an undrafted free agent with the Steelers in 2000. He moved to the Eagles the following year where he spent five seasons.

In 2006, he was traded to the Browns, who were coached by Romeo Crennel at the time.

Last season, he saw time at several spots along the offensive line -- mainly center -- including a few starts at right guard.

The Chiefs of course don't really have a right guard at the time.

Fraley is 32 years old.

i think we can make a run...

at the division and the playoffs. i think people put too much emphasis on players though and not enough on continuity and heart and knowing the system. i want some of these guys, and i think they’ll help, but that’s why they’re always talking about the right 53, because that’s what builds winning teams

by E.C. on Mar 12, 2010 5:43 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed on the continuity statement

We’re still filling gaps. Sign a guy like Lilja who’s on the right side of 30 and we can work with that. Anybody over 30 who can still play well is called depth. We’re not done building yet.

Greatest Mr. Burns moment ever:

Smithers tells burns that there are some people from the Springfield orphanage who are asking him for a $1 million dollar donation. Burns says he’ll donate the million dollars . . . when pigs fly! Cue Homer’s roasting pig as it sails past Burns’ window. Smithers asks Burns if he should cut a check for the million dollars. Burns: “I think not.”

You realize this means we're going to win the Flint Michigan Megabowl right?

We have so many more friggin options in the draft now. Sign both of em. We’ll make it to the playoffs AT LEAST this year folks.

I can’t believe all these people want to play for us. We basically gave Thomas a really expensive washing machine to come play. WOOT!

by The_Bernard_Pollard_Rule on Mar 12, 2010 5:39 PM CST reply actions

Lord I hope not

IF we sign Fraley to a 2 or 3 year contract, it’ll give us a chance to draft a center in the draft after this one, O’Dowd or Wisniewski, and develop him. Then we’ll be able to take Render or Petrus or someone else in round 4 or 5 and groom them to be our RG of the future.

Wiegmann, is a stop gap, you can’t deny it. he’ll push Niswanger out to RG, or Fraley over to RG. He’ll give us more flexibility along our offensive line this season. He’s still not the answer.

Lilja, where does he fit into the mix? Are we trading Waters? Lilja is a gifted pass protector, but a liability in the run game. He’ll help Cassel, but hurt the production of Charles and Jones.

I’d love to see Jason Fox come in round 2, or Cirion Black in round 5 to push O’Callaghan for a starting position around midseason.

Competition and Depth

Its the only way to look at this. If they can build a kick-ass first string O-line out of these guys, I say bring ‘em in. If it means we don’t draft an OT with the number 5 pick, I’m all for it.

Jesus mcclanahanman...are you my doppleganger?

I thought I was the only one thinking we should persue O’Dowd and Wisniewski next year…

I chalked that up to a fluke…then Petrus and Ciron Black? If you want barry at 5# you could be my twin brother.

for the last few months my picks look like this…btw im cutting and pasting this….

1st Eric Berry (S)
2nd Carlos Dunlap (DE)
2nd -Vince Wilfork- (NT)
3rd Brandon Spikes (ILB)
4th Ciron Black (RT)
5th LaGarrette Blount (RB)
5th Mitch Petrus (G)
6th Myron Rolle (SS)

although…one thing you should think about…and something that is bugging me…..there are also two really good NTs going next year…forgot their names….so if we climb to 8-8 we might have to choose between top NT and top C.

Also next year is supposed to be the year of the WR…there are 3 probably going in the top 5

by MasterBlaster7 on Mar 12, 2010 10:29 PM CST up reply actions

Take a NT in round one

and Wisniewski or O’Dowd in round 2.

If we’re stuck at 5 I’m fine with Berry, but I’d rather have Suh or McCoy if at all possible.

o dowd in the 2nd?

by BJ Kissel on Mar 13, 2010 3:18 AM CST up reply actions

I like Walton

But It makes more sense to me to stick with Weigmann this season, and start Fraley at the beginning of next season and take Wisniewski or O’Dowd, and I usually say Wisniewski because he’s shorter and should get better leverage on the inside, and he’ll probably fall farther than O’Dowd.

Walton or Olsen would be nice, but I’d rather wait on O’Dowd or Wisniewski and stick to the journeymen C’s this season and the beginning of next. The more talent we have on the lines, the deeper we’ll go in the playoffs when we’re ready to make our push.

This season I’d say Petrus over Walton or Olsen because he’d be a nice right guard, who could cover at C in a pinch because of his size. He’s stout as a bull, reminds me of Will Shields in a lot of ways, although his shorter stature would limit him to the interior line. I keep coming back to Petrus over Render, Walton and Olsen, because I feel like when it comes to the short yards and he has to man up and drive block, he’ll be the strongest of the four at the point of attack. Same with Wisniewski. Both shorter, stronger players who should be able to get under their man and drive them back.

Even if we’re going to zone block, I’d like for us to have some guys that can smack you in the mouth when we get into short yardage. If Wisniewski or O’Dowd was going in this draft, would you rather have one of them, or Walton or Pouncey? My problem with Pouncey is, would you have to take his brother next season to keep him happy?

The better the talent on the lines, the better the skilled positions will look.

In this scheme a line like this is my dream for 2012
Clady – Albert – Wisniewski – Petrus – Fox

They’d be able to play the zone scheme and man up and hit you in the mouth in short yardage and goal line situations from the LG to the RT.

Albert – Render – Walton – Brown – O’Callaghan would be a nice line but which would you rather have when we’re making a post season push?

I say Clady because Denver is wanting to go to a man scheme, and he would be a step up over Albert at LT in our zone blocking scheme in pass protection, something I can’t say over anyone in this year’s draft. He struggled in Denver this past season after an awesome rookie year. I don’t think McDaniels see’s him as the future for Denver at LT. I think he’s on the block on draft day, I can see someone like Davis going to Denver in the first round, or Cody at the Nose.

Albert at LG, there’s no one in this year’s draft that would come close to him there, He’d be a couple of steps up over a declineing Waters and Lilja.

Wisniewski, C, really can you say Walton would be better for us in this position? Yes Walton would be a solid C, but Wisniewski would shine over him.

Petrus, RG, a strong guard, kind of short, if anything happened to Wisniewski he could slide over to C and Brown could man this post.

Fox, RT, if it wasn’t for his injury this year he’d be in the first round, I think he’d do better than Anthony Collins in Cincy, who came out in a similar situation.

This draft is deep on the Line, but the top tier talent isn’t what it’s been in years past on the O-Line.

i think our QB play was not terrible

for being the first year in the system; the whole teams first year really, and he will get better. he actually showed me something last year with how not so terrible he was; very few QB’s are the bomb right off the bat, especially when coming to to a truly terrible team. i say our D is what must improve. they were damn bad last year

by E.C. on Mar 12, 2010 6:10 PM CST up reply actions

I think the QB problem...

rested on the play of the OLine. Yes, the quarterback has to be smart and get rid of the ball, but he has to have a little time to do that. Cassel spent a lot of time testing his pads on the turf last year.

Are you so sure about that?

Lilja is a LG, he’s not enough of a mauler to be a RG, Fraley can play RG and C.

If all 3 are signed, I’m sure Waters is leaving somehow, trade, cut……something.

Fraley will give us the flexibility to deal Niswanger and draft a young guy to play RG, Lilja gives us the flexibility to deal Waters and develop Brown to play LG. A young RT would be nice in this draft as well, and there’s going to be 2 centers sitting there in next season’s draft and both are better than Pouncey.

by chief Stevie_k on Mar 13, 2010 2:08 AM CST up reply actions

Usually?

Forget the man of the year, look at it like this.

Lilja is a step down from Waters yes, but Waters is declining while Lilja is a plateau player. Lilja has 3 to 5 more year of play at this level, while Waters is starting down the other side.

Waters is in the last year of his contract, and it makes sense to deal him now, declining player, still a solid name, damn good guy, and although a draft pick wouldn’t produce at his level right away if at all, it gives us another young guy for several years, instead of Waters for this season.
