Jets Had Chance To Match Chiefs Offer To Thomas Jones

The buzz around the Kansas City Chiefs the last few days is what a great value they got in Thomas Jones. The contract is short (two years) and includes little money ($5 million). Jones of course is coming off a career year so a lot of folks think it's a solid, short-term deal.

Apparently, the Jets declined the chance to match the Chiefs offer, according to PFT's Mike Florio.

This is interesting on a number of levels and I've got a few questions.

First, what about the report from Jim Trotter of SI.com that Jones has too much pride to return to a team that cut him?

Second, do the Jets know something about Jones that the Chiefs don't, thus the reason for declining to match the offer?

Third, did the Jets feel they could get a better value out of another one of the veteran running backs (Tomlinson, Westbrook, etc)?

Anyone know the answers to those? I sure don't.

I think they just want Shonn Green to take over...

and don’t want to pay Jones who would essentially be their third back. Plus they me be smart enough to realize that they need to re-sign “Chiefs future Hall of Famer” Tony Richardson. That may be tying too much money in their back-field.

One of my concerns is

Why are they bringing in LT? Why wouldn’t they attempt the seemingly more productive back for apparently less money?

don't worry

LT won’t get more money, he’s just not a good back anymore. My guess is he retires after he figures out what his actual value is. Unless he’s trying to get to some record ala emmitt smith.

I don't think he's no good. But I don't think he's willing to take less than big money from SD.

And SD needs to address the trenches. That’s the negative in MY book about LT. Too selfish to realize the team comes before his big, fat ego.

This has been a concern

Since the signing. Everything happened so fast and the money has been reported as being so cheap, it makes one wonder. If Jones takes the field on opening day and his butt falls off there are going to be alot of angry fans. Funny, they will be the same ones that were upset because we didn’t spend our butts off duing free agency!

No worries

I think Thomas Jones wanted out and didn’t feel needed there anymore. The two year contract is a smart move by the front office. They didn’t invest too much money in the deal.

by paxchief on Mar 12, 2010 10:18 AM CST reply actions

Well I would like to think the Chiefs worked him out and all that kind of stuff.

He seemed to be in KC for a good amount of time before being signed. I think somebody would of been able to spot something or their would of been a sign of some sort on his physical. He should be a very productive back for us.

by chiefs_fan05 on Mar 12, 2010 10:21 AM CST reply actions

He should be productive...

If we upgrade the O-line….I sure Pioli will attempt to, but that’s pretty key for TJ to be a success in KC.

True..

But unlike Charles, he is probably going to need a good line to be sucessful. That’s not a knock on TJ, that’s just the type of back he is.

I think Jones is about TEAM success.

I just hope we see more overall chemistry between QB and RBs in the passing game.

by hmills110 on Mar 12, 2010 4:14 PM CST up reply actions

My guess is...

That the Jets feel like they’re fine at RB with Greene and Washington. Nothing more. And you know…they’re probably right.

They will draft another solid mid round guy

Anyone totting the rock behind that line will look solid.

I agree, if they give Sanchez more responsibility/authority to balance out the offense.

But if Schottie’s boy calls Martyball all day long, every day, that offense will struggle to advance very far in the playoffs…

by Pollard49 on Mar 12, 2010 10:26 AM CST up reply actions

My take is this

Shonn Greene is a similar runner to Jones so it makes sense to give the younger back the chance. Washington if healthy is a change of pace back with a different running style and return ability. The puzzling part is the interest in LT. Nevertheless I believe LT is a better blocker and receiver than Jones in my opinion so he has a slightly different skill set. By the way isn’t Washington being pursued by someone else. If so it would make sense to bring LT as a 3rd down type back.

by Nelly on Mar 12, 2010 10:23 AM CST reply actions

Shonn Greene is harder to bring down than Jones.

As for LT, I think most of his decline is o-line and scheme-related, contrary to what others, here, think.

And I’m concerned about what you’re saying about Jones’s lack of versatility. I don’t want him to be brought in here to just slam his head against the wall for 2.7 ypc. He needs to be a viable part of a diverse offense. I do NOT want to see defenses able to discount the screen or dump-off to the HB, just because Jones is off the field. It was a disheartening thing to see/feel, whenever LJ took to the field.

I’m fine with an LJ (on the field), if my o-line is dominant. Get your run threats out of the runner and your receiving threats out of your receivers. But give me a Holmes/Faulk/LT any old day, when defenses fear what the RB might do in the passing game.

Hard to say how much of THAT Cassel will add to his game. It looked to me last year, like Cassel has the tools for the pick-n-roll game with RB-vs-LB, but didn’t really have it hammered out with any of his RBs. I’m VERY hopeful that Cassel and the RBs/WRs are starting EARLY on this stuff. Repetition is the key, here, probably more even than for OL corps.

Wow that is surprising to me...

Mainly b/c they are looking at bringing in LT.

We’ll see what LT signs for, but TJ showed much more than LT last year.

If LT signs some seriously cheap deal…maybe. But I don’t see that happening, especially after Childress’ moronic quote today saying AP and LT would be 1 and 1a.

Sounds like LT’s ending up in Minny.

by kcsno56 on Mar 12, 2010 10:26 AM CST reply actions

Just because they had the chance to match the offer

doesn’t mean he would have taken it, if they were sure he wasn’t coming back why waste the time. Technically every other team in the NFL had the chance to match the chiefs offer too. As far as LT goes, they might just figure they have the best O-Line in the league, if anyone can squeeze the last couple years out of him it is probably them.

by RamX21 on Mar 12, 2010 10:30 AM CST reply actions

Actually...

That’s exactly what Florio is saying.

That Jones gave them the right to match the Chiefs offer.

He wasn’t a RFA, he was cut, by the Jets, so Jones didn’t have to give them that option. It means they didn’t want him for 2 years, $5 mil.

I won’t be real worried unless I hear that LT signs with them for that. That would be a little bit of a concern, b/c TJ > LT at this point, at least in my eyes…and it would make you think the Jets know something about TJ.

by kcsno56 on Mar 12, 2010 11:02 AM CST up reply actions

This is easy...

Pick a young promising back in the LOW rounds of the draft for cheap money. They know they have solid runners in both Shonne Green and Leon Washington so there’s no need to keep a 3rd back for full price. Simple business, they just didn’t NEED him at the cost. :D We win.

First, what about the report from Jim Trotter of SI.com that Jones has too much pride to return to a team that cut him?

Ego’s in sports? Never happens….ok, happens all the time. Very possible and it’s not the first time this has happenned….see Favre.

Second, do the Jets know something about Jones that the Chiefs don’t, thus the reason for declining to match the offer?

Maybe, or Jones pulled a TG and insisted on getting out due to question 1.

Third, did the Jets feel they could get a better value out of another one of the veteran running backs (Tomlinson, Westbrook, etc)?

Probably the most accurate…OR depending on the draft they had already planned to have a replacement RB from a short list. This is probably the most plausible explanation. But we’ll have to see the draft play out.

How do guys, just wanted to pop in and share my thoughts on this, a few of your guys popped over to GGN the other night.

I think Mike Florio is an idiot first and foremost, get that out the way. Doesn’t mean he is wrong but I think the only way that this is true, is if he said straight off that because we cut him, he wasn’t going to come back with this team.

Jones completely broke down in the play-offs and he was having some problems with his knees, but I think that can be expected when you ask a veteran back to carry the ball over 300 times. He is a durable guy, so he should be good for 16 games next year splitting carries.

Jones always enjoyed being here, but when we cut him, I think the chances of him coming back were minute at best. nobody wants to go back to a team that cut you. Greene will be taking the majority of the touches this season and we also have to take Leon on board if he is here.

Which in turn explains the LT situation, Leon was offered a good contract last year but his agent (one of the most unpopular names among Jets fans Alvin Keels) wanted more, so we played out this year knowing that he was going to become a restricted free agent. He broke his leg, and lost the chance to get an off-season contract. We placed a second round tender on him and there is talk he may be drawing some interest. If we do let him go we need a pass catching threat, which LT is.

I wouldn’t worry too much about TJ, a lot of things went into this decision, but I don’t think much was due to TJ’s ability, more the $$ involved, and the other RB’s we had.

No problem, one thing that you can’t overlook is his leadership, the players loved him when he was here. When he signed with you guys, a few players were really not happy about that, and warned that the decision would not go down well in the locker room. Great work ethic, and he has arms bigger than most peoples chests.

by AirNorval on Mar 12, 2010 4:16 PM CST up reply actions

He definitely beat his head against the wall all year, against defenses that KNEW NYJ were a run-first operation.

A real credit to his toughness (and the Jets’ OL) that he had the 1400-yard season.

My big concern is how he is as a pass-catcher and in pass protections. He at least needs to be very very good at one of these.

by hmills110 on Mar 12, 2010 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

Cheers, glad that they are reaching further than just our board, good to know.

Good chance, some people think we may go RB early, potentially someone like Toby Gerhart in the 2nd, we don’t have a 3rd. I think it depends on whether Leon stays with us or some other team picks him up. If he stays and LT joins then we might pass this year.

Pass catching wise he is alright when asked, nothing more, he used to be a lot better, we didn’t really ask him to do much catching last year. I think he had over 400 yards through the air with the Bears one year though. Pass protection is very solid.

Never say never but I doubt he gets much more of a look in this year than he did last year. Woodhead is a nice story, that people like, in reality I personally don’t think he has a future in the NFL. We tried turning him into a slot receiver last year, but didn’t go very well. Maybe with a full off-season to work on it, then perhaps…
