Chiefs Solve Two of 2009's Biggest Problems With Jones & Urban
I was thrilled with the Thomas Jones signing. One of last years biggest concerns was the fumbling of insurgent superstar Jamaal Charles. The signing of TJ, I think should solve this problem. If not only for the simple reason, and don't be surprised, that if JC fumbles again early and often in 2010, that Todd will press Weis to make TJ the primary back. I think JC will be ok, but it's worth noting, that noone hates a fumbler more than Todd Haley.
Second, I love the Urban signing, if for no other reason, that we can now comfortably refuse to offer Bobby Wade a contract. If anyone thinks that Scott and Todd, have forgotton the half-baked attempt at a Matt Cassell bomb (excuse me, but attempt is being kind, he didn't even extend his arms toward the ball) last season, well I would have to say that that fan would be sorely mistaken. In addition to that, Wade's public bickering and arguing with Todd on the sideline, has definitely not been forgotton. I would go so far as to say that Todd has been so anxious to be rid of Wade since these turns of events, that he has been begging Scott for justification to can his butt ever since. I for one, am still angry at Wade's performance and attitude with the Chiefs, and toward our first year Head Coach.
Todd, your time has finally come. Have fun.
Bye Bye, Mr. WADE.

Nice post
First, you and I are on similar wavelengths as I have a story with similar points scheduled to run later this morning.
Second, Wade is not under contract with the Chiefs so there’s no reason to cut him.
so
If KC does not offer a contract, Wade is as good as gone?

Yep
I wasn’t aware of that. Thanks for the correction. Yes, hopefully, he’s as good as gone. I’ll try and do better next time. Thanks.
You can always go back into the post and edit it...
That way others won’t make the same comment later on… there are a couple grammatical typos in there also.
Also nice writeup.
Go Chiefs!!!!
say, I have an idea ...
how about he goes back and edits the post so …
oh, wait

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
I figured he didn't know, but he obviously does...
looks much better
Go Chiefs!!!!
i luv all info and wish the AP nazis would leave you and them alone!!

wow, you're really freaking out about "the AP Nazis" lately
constructive criticism does nothing but help people as long as they can take it and not get offended. looks like TheK can take it, i’m guessing you can’t
serious (for a change) question, if you know (or maybe Joel has an idea)
how many fumbles did Jamaal Charles have AFTER he became the starter? let’s say whatever happened before LJ was released, or the bye week, or some reasonably arbitrary point in time … from then on, how many fumbles (and how many carries? what was his carry to fumble ratio?)
just some food for thought …

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
looks like he had 4 fumbles for the year, only lost 1
I don’t remember seeing him have any real issues with ball control… I think it’s blown way out of proportion
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB
looks like
he really started carrying the load in week 10 and he had 3 fumbles after that, in weeks 12, 13, 15. Losing 2 of those. In total after after week 9 he had 161 carries and 3 fumbles
In comparison
Adrian peterson, who is one of the most notorious fumblers in the league had 7 fumbles total 6 of which he lost on 314 carries
that's getting pretty close to the same ratio
it’s gotta get fixed. you can’t say you weren’t holding your breath a lot when he had the ball
Good points
Unless JC fumbles multiple times a game I would not expect Jones to be thrust in automatically after a fumble though. JC was an electric talent and you just dont put that back on the bench for 1 fumble. Remember Adrian Peterson in the playoffs last year? It was like 12 fumbles (or maybe it only seemed like 12) before he was taken out.
And welcome to AP BTW, I see that your new here.
Cry Havoc! And let slip the Chiefs Defense of War!!!
I wouldn't say a backup NT and 3WR were two of the BIGGEST problems...
I agree that they are good signings, and allow the Chiefs to address other needs in the draft and the remaining free agency/trading period
Fix: Backup RB
Though you can lump our new NT in the group of problems fixed
I don't believe that the NT position is fixed...
It has been upgraded yes, but not fixed. A rotation of Edwards and Smith should help out tremendously as the game and season progress.
Go Chiefs!!!!
I'm getting more concerned about the O-line right now.
We have several playmakers on offense now. How do we make sure they get the blocking they need? Losing Wade Smith is kind of a bummer. I would have been fine with him starting at RG next year.

FYI…I moved your other post to the FanShots section (on the right hand side of the home page, about halfway down)….that’s where we put shorter posts with just a couple sentences.
Thanks!
Charles' fumbling.
I’m still at least partly convinced that JC’s fumbling issues is centered at least in part with his shoulder problem. I just can’t imagine you can grip very well with your shoulder out of socket. My hope is that it settles down now that he’s gotten it repaired, and we don’t have to worry about it in the first place.
TJ could probably also teach him a few things regarding keeping a hold of the ball as well. He has to be a better mentor than 2.7. Spitting in women’s faces and running into your O-line just don’t really translate into positive performance on the football field, you know?
That was my understanding also.
Wasn’t he always seen on the sideline getting popped back in after a fumble?
That was my take on it.
I’ve said it several times. I only got to watch a few games because I’m in STL and they absolutely refuse to show decent football here, but I clearly remember it at least twice.
In retrospect
WR probably is high on the list of needs. Look how many have come and gone since training camp last year. Haley said that they would continue to bring in players until they found the ones that could help them win. I think that Chambers played hard last year and so far fits that bill. Bowe has potential but he must become more consistent. Wade and Bradley sucked! These two started off with a bang and went down the tubes fast. Long did a better job than these two, at least he busted a gut trying to get to the ball. Combine that with TEs that play like pro bowlers one week and sand lot kids the next, and it’s amazing that Cassel had the yards he did.
RB was also a need, but it remains to be seen if TJ can pull a Curtis “My Favorite” Martin. If the Chiefs can use him and Charles to set up delayed screens and such, it could be an interesting and fun year.
Charles can line up wide or in the slot and do some things with his speed, like Priest used to.
But so far Charles hasn’t looked like a real instinctive screen-receiving back. That, or Cassel and he still need a lot of reps to develop the chemistry. Charles came a fairly long way in a fairly short time. We’ll see if he can round out his game. The mere fact that he has CB-challenging speed is likely to result in more teams running nickel, and giving Charles an edge. This was one of the reasons Priest was so successful in KC. Even when they got into the red zone, teams were still thinking sideline-to-sideline, and not just plugging the middle.
As for WR, I think they’re always lookin’ for players who can produce, but I feel they were very close to making things work with the guys they’d worked into the lineup, including Cottam, Pope, and Long. Down the stretch, with the play fake starting to work off of Jamaal, we even saw Copper notch a pair of receptions in the final game for 57 yards. Other glimpses in those late games, with Cassel having some success throwing to many different targets. Even Bradley had a 3-catch, 57-yard game in there. Nothing eye-popping.
But what I was starting to see towards the end of the season was a TEAM that was set up for receiving success. This makes them happier about the receivers they HAVE, but it also makes it more worthwhile to ADD WRs. Ironically, if the table’s close to bein’ set, it’s time to go higher for WR upside, rather than just making conservative/system/team-building picks.
Haley IS saying the team needs playmakers
I have that sense, also. Looked like he was getting that one more beat to get open and could do something with it.
There are numerous teams against whom the current WR corps can field 4 who can cause problems for the best 4 DBs the opposition can field.
That is, if he doesn't get himself killed out there.
He seems to put himself in a lot of bad situations on the field at times.
Agreed.
at first I thought Bobby Wade could bring more to the table, but, clearly, I was wrong. Guy is unproductive, and he has an attitude problem. Won’t be sad to see him gone.

can't bring attitude with you to the NFL...
The humble man will last longer. Sorry Wade, go with LJ and all the other so-called players that aren’t Berry coachable.
