The Official Draft Eric Berry Fanclub

WARNING:  If you do not want the Chiefs to draft Eric Berry this post is not for you.  If you do not like fans getting carried away with one guy and obsessing over him you should probably find another post.  This post contains excessive "Hoopla" and awesome pictures of Eric Berry.  If you aren't into it please visit one of the other insightful posts here at AP and leave us Berryholics to ourselves.  Thank You

So after reading about how countless others here at AP also have an incurable man-crush on the man, the myth, the legend that is Eric Berry I have decided to create the Official Draft Eric Berry Fanclub.  Like the very wise Kung Fu Panda once said "There is no charge for Awesomeness" and so there is no charge to join the fanclub.  My man-crush is so strong that I have decided to replace my beloved Kool Aid Man pic with one of Berry until the draft comes.  I have also prowdly displayed my membership in my sig line.  Now there will be no need to tell people that I'm a Berry fan because every comment I make will display his awesomeness.  I encourage others to do the same.  Search the web for the best Eric Berry pic you can find and display it with pride.

Star-divide

Some will feel that such a fanclub is "redonkulous".  That is okay.  Over time they will be enlightened and one day will come to worship at the altar of his awesomeness (That's right, I've now used the word awesomeness three times in one post (four counting just now) HE IS THAT AWESOME!!!!!!).

 Ericberryphoto051fm4_medium

via img386.imageshack.us

If this image alone hasn't persuaded you to join, how about some stats.

In three years an Tennessee he played in 39 games and made 245 tackles (about 6.28 / game).  He also had 14 INTs (despite QBs avoiding him like the plague) returned for a staggering 494 yards.  That's over 35 yards per INT.  AWESOMENESS!!!!!!!!!!! (five).

Now there is some risk involved here.  Fate could deal us a cruel blow and our beloved Chiefs could come away from the draft without the talented Mr. Berry (sniff, tear).  This will be hard to take I admit it.  If this happens I may have to steal this pic from Craig's recent piece on Mortensen and use it for my profile pick until I come out of mourning.

 Nooooomedium_medium

via img718.imageshack.us

I do feel the risk of being heartbroken is worth the reward.  So don't deny your feelings.  Join me in celebrating Eric Berry's awesomeness (that's six).  Join AP's Official Draft Eric Berry Fanclub today.

UPDATE:  MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!!!!!!  THE AWESOMENESS THAT IS ERIC BERRY WILL CALL KC HOME.  WELL DONE FANCLUB MEMBERS.  NOW WE JUST NEED SOME BERRY PICTURES IN CHIEFS GEAR.

PORKCHOP OUT

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Unless SUH falls to us I don’t see anyone sitting at 5 that has the most potential as Berry….. but they were saying the same thing about Curry last year also. Hmmmmm.

Enough with all the Berry Hoopla.

I don’t have anything against the kid, and I like the relationship he and Flowers seem to be developing, but I’m getting really sick of all the rants and raves about him and the draft in general. Relax people. We’ll either get your guy or we won’t, and nothing you can do will change that sadly.

I actually just wanted the chance to throw Hoopla into the catchphrases for this post.

by Archyrr on Mar 11, 2010 12:23 PM CST reply actions

the "Hoopla" is out of control

Not gonna happen.

I’m not getting too attached to anyone we may draft, and to be honest I’m hesitant to do it with guys on the team. In this era you never know who is coming or going.

by Archyrr on Mar 12, 2010 11:31 AM CST up reply actions

I watched 2 Eric Berry games last year

1) Florida – He was the best player on the field on either team (as much as it pains me to say)
2) Ole Miss – I had no idea he was on the field. He was a total non factor.

I know SMALL SAMPLE SIZE WARNING, but I know people hate “yo-yo’s” around here and to me he would fit into that catagory. I recognize again that it was only 2 games, but I’m just going with what I actually observed.

"I've only been in love with a beer bottle and a mirror" - Sid Vicious.

by craig in calgary on Mar 11, 2010 12:24 PM CST reply actions

The biggest down side of Berry

is that OCs can decide to just stay away from him. The plus side of that is that it limits what the passing game can do. In that regard he has a big impact on the game even if the ball is going away from him every play.

Official Member of the "Draft Eric Berry" Fanclub

by KCporkchop on Mar 11, 2010 12:31 PM CST up reply actions

Or is that a positive?

So if they’re avoiding Berry, and they’re avoiding Flowers (who at least to me is starting to get an inordinate amount of INTs/FFs), they’re really restricting the passing game. Assume Carr learns to turn his head around and that pretty much covers the secondary. Just leaves the short TE/RB across the middle stuff that absolutely killed us last year.

by Archyrr on Mar 11, 2010 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

That's what I'm saying

Even if he isn’t a factor by making the plays himself, I think he’ll be the kind of player that offenses have to plan around. We haven’t had one of those since JA left (although Flowers and Hali were pretty close last year).

Official Member of the "Draft Eric Berry" Fanclub

by KCporkchop on Mar 11, 2010 12:50 PM CST up reply actions

Hali was more of a “Hold” around player last year. I still can’t believe those officials.

by Archyrr on Mar 11, 2010 12:54 PM CST up reply actions

seriously

we should’ve seen more yellow on that field last year.

Prediction: With the #5 pick, the Kansas City Chiefs take someone we've never freakin` heard of...

by ChiefDog on Mar 11, 2010 6:41 PM CST up reply actions

Staying away from him?

Guys he’s playing safety. If they decide to stay away from him he’s taking half the field with him. Anyone who says they doubt his ability, find any interview from the combine. He says he was getting bored because teams wouldn’t throw at him anymore but he would still make it across the field for the tackle. Fan-freaking-tastic. sign this man up and pay him.

by Godlovetheredman14 on Mar 11, 2010 4:35 PM CST up reply actions

Couldn't agree more

I’m just saying that’s why he only had 2 INTs last year and didn’t have as many highlight reel plays. Teams tried to stay as far away from him as possible.

Official Member of the "Draft Eric Berry" Fanclub

by KCporkchop on Mar 11, 2010 5:15 PM CST up reply actions

Much of that TE/RB across the middle stuff evaporates if the LBs would learn to do more than patty-cake at the line.

A gentle nudge on the shoulder pads at the line ain’t what I’m talkin’ about, either. Knock their block off or tie ‘em up. Not this pitty-pat stuff I saw from last year’s LBs.

But the basic theme, here, of having more DBs taking more of the field away, is exactly what I want to see.

by hmills110 on Mar 15, 2010 1:56 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't disagree there.

If the LBs can finally deal with that, it’ll be a bad day trying to throw against us.

by Archyrr on Mar 15, 2010 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Even if they do decide to stay awar from him

as many college OCs decided to do, he’s proven he can still get across the field and make the play. Half the stats he has he had to go TO the ball to get it done

That...

has been Ed Reed’s tag line for years now. If Suh doesn’t fall to us, Berry should be the pick.

1. Suh will fall to us at 5
2. McClain will fall to us at 2a
3. The Chiefs will trade DJ and Dorsey

I still prefer Ro' McClain

For obvious reasons.

1. 34 experience

2. Smartest most passionate LB ever….like in the history of ever….for real.

3. Quarterback of the defense, calls audibles, sets positions.

4. SEC defensive player of the year….yes he beat Eric Berry, Dan Williams, Brandon Spikes, etc.

5. I feel ILB could use a leader for our defense. A guy who can stop the run and make plays in the backfield, as well as drop in coverage and do a very good job.

6. I am not only a member of the Ro’ fan club, I am also the president.

Ro’ fan club will rule Berry fan club!!

McClain

Have you watched tape on this guy? He looked lost half the time! He is slow and looks like he is big enough to play ILB. His coverage skills are not that good he can rush the passer but only if he is unblocked. Pass on McClain fan club

by mysonmylife on Mar 11, 2010 3:31 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I trust your assessment of the tape...

…that’s why he was voted conference defensive player of the year, ahead of Berry.

He is slow and looks like he is big enough to play ILB

He DOES play ILB ….. what the hell tape were you watching that he wasn’t playing ILB? You watching his highschool tapes?

Look, I have no problem with you saying that you like Berry better than McClain. I don’t have any problem withh anyone ‘liking’ ine guy better than another. But PLEASE can we stop with the Berry is a GOD and no one can stop him BS justiposed with the McClain is a big slow idiot that’s lucky to have had a place on the field.

McClain is the the BEST 3-4 inside linebacker in the entire draft. He’s the most polished, the most productive, and the most praised guy at his position headed into the draft.

Berry is ‘arguably’ the best safety in the draft. (A couple guys that study tape for a living rank him second, but most say 1st) He’s also polished, productive, and praised.

Neither one of them has ever taken a single snap in the NFL. Neither one of them is a ‘sure thing’ or a ‘sure probowler’ or ‘the next ______’, or whatever other guarentees that people that don’t have a clue what they are talking about are making. The NFL is NOT college football. No college player is going to walk into the NFL as a rookie and flat out dominate everyone else on the field……no matter how many times YOU say it, or anyone else says it…..it simply ins’t true.

by Texas Chief on Mar 11, 2010 5:15 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Agree and disagree

You’re right about McClain, he’s not some lumbering oaff, he is the best LB in the draft. However, I would point out that most (not all) have Berry rated about 5-10 spots higher then McClain. As far as rookies not being able to dominate, I think the track record on safeties lately is actually pretty good. The first year they started (some didn’t start until their second year) several guys have played at a pro bowl level.

Ed Reed (Rookie Year): 85 tackles, 5 INTs
Bob Sanders (2nd year, 1st as starter): 91 tackles, INT, FF
Adrian Wilson (2nd year, 1st as starter): 91 tackles, 4 INTs, FF
Troy Polamalu (2nd year, 1st as starter): 96 tackles, 5 INTs, TD, FF
Sean Taylor (Rookie Year): 76 tackles, 4 INT, 2 FF

So all 5 were great their first year starting, even the two that were thrown to the fire as rookies. I think this shows safety is a position where guys can make the change from college to the NFL and adapt quickly.

Official Member of the "Draft Eric Berry" Fanclub

by KCporkchop on Mar 11, 2010 5:41 PM CST up reply actions

Im not supprized with rookies that spent a year learing from the bench.

IMO you can’t even put those in the same arguement as guy starting as a rookie. It also removes the top 3 of your 5 player assessment of safeties that can dominate as a rookie.

My point is this: The NFL is not college ball. There is a list longer than my proverbial johnson of players that everyone said would be a ‘sure thing’ in the NFL that never amounted to a hill of beans. If I read 1 more person that “guarentees Berry will be all pro in the NFL” I think I’ll puke in a bucket next to my desk.

You can like Berry or any other player all you want. I’m not trying to stop you……but let’s back off the hype a little bit and stop making blanket statements and guarentees. And for the love of all that is good in this world, don’t sit up on a high horse and talk down to me accusiing me of ‘not watching the tape’ or ‘not having a clue’ .. when you don’t even know what position the guy you are about to bash plays.

I'm hoping that was a blanket statement and not directed at me personally

I’ve always respected your view point on things Texas Chief and in no point do I feel I have done what you are talking about in that last paragraph. I for one have never guarenteed anything. I believe he will be a game changing playmaker. The point of my last paragraph was that you don’t have to wait 2-3 years before the top safeties start to play well there are recent examples of safeties that played well right away.

In general Texas Chief I would just say that you are bound to get yourself worked up if you come into a post like this and try to tell people to stop being irrational. If it was a serious post intended to discuss if we should draft Berry or not then you’d be right on, but it was suppose to be a fun post about starting a fan club for the guy that used the word awesomeness six times.

WOW! If you want A.E. Berry, why don’t you trade up with us? I think we might only want your #5 pick and third and fourth round picks this year and maybe your third in 2011 for it.

count me in on the "anything but an OL Club" at 5

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

These are the retired numbers...

16 Len Dawson
18 Emmitt Thomas
28 Abner Haynes
33 Stone Johnson
36 Mack Lee Hill
58 Derrick Thomas
63 Willie Lanier
78 Bobby Bell
86 Buck Buchanan

Additionally, nobody has worn the #37 since Joe Delaney died. I also don’t believe anyone has worn 19 since Joe Montana retired. Kestahn Moore, who is currently on our roster, is the first player I’ve seen listed as #32 since Marcus Allen. Lastly, I doubt anyone will ever where #88 again.

I could see Berry in 34. That’s my guess. He’ll reverse the “Mike Cloud Curse”.

This picture is great

not because he’s hitting Tebow, but because he’s putting his helmet directly on the ball…a perfect tackler puts his head in front of the ball carrier rather than behind him, and also tries to put his head or a shoulder directly on the ball while wrapping up.

The studs from the 2010 draft class will be: DT Ndamukong Suh, S Eric Berry, RB C.J. Spiller, RB Jahvid Best, WR Arrelious Benn, WR Golden Tate, WR Mardy Gilyard, OT Charles Brown, CB Kyle Wilson and S Chad Jones

It worked on me! I put up a Fanpost on Pride of Detroit linking to this great thread!

I have challenged our own Eric Berry-aholics to match the enthusiasm and creativity of the Chiefs fans here.

I’m thinking it can’t be done! RECS FOR ALL !!!!

Its the classic story of an old wise man teaching a young eager student the art of Tampa 2.

1. Suh will fall to us at 5
2. McClain will fall to us at 2a
3. The Chiefs will trade DJ and Dorsey

+14 to Todd McShay, Mel Kiper Jr, and Mike Lombardi for all having Berry going to the Chiefs at #5. A berry smart move in their mocks.

Sorry guys but the fun is over. King, Peter has decreed that the Chiefs will not draft Berry.

LINK: http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2010/3/16/1375420/chiefs-would-never-take-safety

I have a feeling that the King has stuck his neck out a little far on this one. Apparently he looked in his magic mirror and saw the future. Unfortunately he did not deign to tell us peons who the Chiefs are actually choosing.

King doesn't have "he said it so it is law" respect with me.

His opinion is noted, but will not cause me to lose hope.

EB = Pain2

That is what my picture says, if you could read it. I can post it from my computer though.

I have my #14 UT jersey and would love to have a KC Berry jersey to add to it. I could retire my Holmes jersey. Huge KC and Vol fan in Knoxville, TN. Berry is the definition of awesome.

Why aren’t you on the Draft Joe Haden Fanclub? Because even on a down year our secondary is better than yours.

Yeah

Crennel ran Tennessee pro day drills,we showing some interest in Berry?

by Green-Monster on Mar 17, 2010 9:39 PM CDT reply actions

We have interest in Berry...

I called Pioli today when he was hangin with Bon Jovi, and said while he was “on vacation” I will handle his business matters… He said make it look like “an accident”. The job is done, Berry is a Chief………………………………… or else……

Winning isnt a matter of life and death, its more important than that.

Eric berry can play.

We need a guy like that to strengthen our defense. I see Rolondo McClain as becoming more of a leader, but I definitely see Eric Berry fitting our needs better, and doing better things for our defense.

Hi. My big board for our first rounder is:
1. Russell Okung, OT
2. Eric Berry, S
3. Rolondo McClain, ILB
4. Brian Bulaga, OT
5. Dan Williams, NT

Do it.

Draft Eric Berry. Just do it. Do it.

(if he’s still available, that is)

Earl Thomas might be a better safety ....

I haven’t seen them play so I base my perception on futile highlights video on youtube .. but I really liked what I saw from Earl Thomas. He made a lot of plays where he was the safety help while Berry seems more of a freelancer where he was at the right spot at the right time .. obviously a good quality, but I haven’t seen a lot of safety help type of play which makes me wonder if Berry is that good? .. and worthy a 5th pick overall ..

by OneChiefs on Mar 20, 2010 11:08 AM CDT reply actions

I really like Earl Thomas

it’s just a shame he won’t be their with our 2nd rounder. We have interest in him too, I have heard. If he is there in round 2, by some sort of miracle, we will jump on him.

Hi. My big board for KC's first rounder is:
1. Russell Okung, OT
2. Eric Berry, S
3. Rolondo McClain, ILB
4. Brian Bulaga, OT
5. Dan Williams, NT
Bye.

Earl Thomas can get the fuck out of here. Go start a “The Official Draft Earl Thomas Fanclub” if you think his awesomeness can compare Berry. :)

I hope we do draft him

A secondary with him, page, flowers, and carr sounds good. And this defense needs a playmaker like Berry

by Lee Gardner III on Mar 21, 2010 1:27 PM CDT reply actions

Earl Thomas is solid,

but Eric Berry has that extra playmaking ability. i mean 14 ints in 3 yrs.?? you gotta give the guy credit.

Eric Berry is pure awesomeness on a stick!

Hi, I’m the biggest Eric Berry Fan (by far) over at the Pride of Detroit SBN site. I’ve got a reputation over there as the “Eric Berry Lover”……which I’m very proud of! I’ve made some predictions over there about players that turned out to be right, and I’ll be right about Berry, too! Eric Berry is the Best Player in the Draft! He’s also a perfect fit for the Lions at #2, and I’ve been insisting for months that the Lions WILL draft Eric Berry at #2. My small core of fellow fanatical believers over there has crumbled due to the unrelenting tidal wave of OMG SUH! OMG McCoy! hype by the lemmings in the media. I was starting to think that I was now fighting this fight alone…..but no more! Eric Berry is awesome! It’s great to find others who understand the universe-bending powers of That Which is Berry. It’s like living your life on an island of one-eyed cycloptic Suh/McCoy-worshipping zombies, then escaping to find people like yourself that have 2 eyes and can see!

If for some crazy reason the Lions do not draft Eric Berry at #2, I can think of no other team, no other fanbase that deserves him more than my fellow Berry-ites here at Arrowhead Pride. Honolulu Blue-Berry is my favorite flavor of Koolaid, but Berry Red is good, too! Feel free to visit me at http://www.prideofdetroit.com/
and spread the Berry Love!

When Eric Berry crosses the street, the cars have to look both ways.

I've also requested (and been selected) to draft for the Chiefs in the Pride of Detroit SBN Mock Draft!

From P.O.D.:

we all know Berry will not get pass KC(GRLion) at the 5th pick….lol

They’re on to me.
