Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Chiefs should trade down in the first.

With QB Sam Bradford most likely gone between picks 1-4 (most likely St.Louis), I see a great opportunity for Kansas City to pick up an extra draft pick in this draft. I think QB Jimmy Clausen will most definitely still be on the board and with teams such as Seattle, Cleveland, and Buffalo needing a QB, we can start negotiating a trade down. I see our best proposal coming from the Cleveland Browns. WHY? Well recently Cleveland has put Brady Quinn on the trading block, letting everyone know that he is not their QOTF. Cleveland currently owns the 7th pick in the first round and I just don't believe Seattle passes on Clausen, especially if Clausen has a good workout in his pro day. By moving down only two spots I think we would be able to pick up an extra 3rd round pick from Cleveland. Here are the trade values:

KC- 1(5) = 1700                                         CLEVELAND - 1(7) = 1500

                                                                                               3(71) = 235

Now we might have to give up a 5th rounder to sweeten the deal, but that is fine given that we have three.

The problem I can see, though, is if there is a player at #5 that the Chiefs really like, and they are afraid Seattle may turn around and select him instead. By this I mean S ERIC BERRY, who I really like and is my favorite player in this draft. We also all know that Pioli places a great emphasis on positional value, and safety may not be very high up on his list.

This is how I see the first seven picks of my draft playing out, given that this trade does go down.

1) ST LOUIS - QB SAM BRADFORD

2) DETROIT - DT NDAMUKONG SUH

3) TAMPA BAY - DT GERALD MCCOY

4) WASHINGTON - OT RUSSELL OKUNG

5) CLEVELAND- QB JIMMY CLAUSEN

6) SEATTLE - S ERIC BERRY

7) KANSAS CITY - OT BRIAN BULAGA (this is the pick if S Eric Berry is gone)

There's going to be a lot of people who may not like this pick but from what I hear it makes a lot of sense. There are connections there and it fills a great need for our offensive line. I hear he excels in run blocking, which needs to be our strength considering we have two great running backs, signaling we will run the ball more.

Anything can happen, though, but I think a trade down would be the best alternative for KC. And who knows, maybe ERIC BERRY will still be there at #7!

I think everyone agrees KC should trade down if possible

And everyone agrees that a QB being available is the most likely chance the Chiefs have at trading down.

+1

I’ll only add, that pretty much every year teams want to trade down out of the top 5, and it rarely happens.

It would be nice, but we shouldn’t hold our breath.

I must have missed something

since when do we have four 5th round picks? I’ve always understood it to be three.

This year will be better

Eric Berry is our biggest need

Especially if Brown finds another team, but even if Brown stays…I just don’t see us re-signing Brown.

I also understood that we have 3 round 5 picks…where’d we get the 4th Larry?

QB for Browns

Recently Jake Delhomme was in town for an interview with the team. If he is signed the Browns might wait til later in draft to pick up a QB. McCoy from Texas perhaps. If they sign Delhomme I don’t think they’ll be likely to draft either Clausen or Bradford, it might come later in the draft.

Also.

Why go down 2 spots to loose out on Berry by 1 spot, to the 6th pick, to seahawks?

But then you're loosing out on Berry.

...but you still have the 7th overall pick

Obviously, Berry is better than a 3rd round pick. But we would have a top10 pick and an additional 3rd round pick.

I like Berry, but I’ll take another pick to ‘miss’ him and take another key player in the 1st round and a possible starter in the 3rd

by Boots 58 on Mar 11, 2010 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

J Charles is a 3rd round pick.

And he is pretty valuable to our team.:) But i want Berry.

Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.

Sorry about that

Three picks in the 5th round. I thought we had four for some reason. I can see that people really value those 5th round picks.

by tmurawsk on Mar 11, 2010 11:57 AM CST reply actions

Dont think its worth it

if we lose out on berry and dont get a second rounder out of it……im all for it if we can get a second rounder

by cassel4prez on Mar 11, 2010 12:03 PM CST reply actions

Berry or

trade back and get Dan Williams NT and another pick. 3 seconds would be great.

Seattle could go LT/WR

with #6 if both Clausen/Bradford are off the board.

by BAMFSpecialOps on Mar 11, 2010 12:25 PM CST reply actions

while trading down might be smart

why Bulaga rather than Dan Williams?

and I can’t see losing on Berry and not gaining a 2nd.

by sgthall on Mar 11, 2010 12:28 PM CST reply actions

losing Berry?

….we wouldn’t be losing Berry.
Berry is not on our team.

We would just be gaining whoever we pick with the additional draft choise.

Only if we end up with a fair trade, or one that favors us.

Seahawks, Browns, Bills, Jagaurs, Broncos, Cardinals, and Vikings will all be in the market for a QB. If either Sam Bradford, or Jimmy Clausen make it past the Rams, and Redskins, if a team offers the right deal than yes take it. This is a deep draft, the more players we can take from the 2010 NFL Draft, the better.

by ChiefsFan90s on Mar 11, 2010 12:37 PM CST reply actions

This is considered the best draft class in recent history...

So it would make sense to try and collect as many draft picks as possible. I think the most we could get out of Cleveland is a third round pick, but if Buffalo was interested than it would most likely be a second. Moving down to #9 would be the best trade down scenario, IMO, if we are targeting OT Brian Bulaga. I don’t think it would be a reach either because he is moving up towards the top half of the first round. I would hate to miss out on Berry but this team needs more quality starters than just one superstar.

by tmurawsk on Mar 11, 2010 2:32 PM CST reply actions

They say its the best draft class every year to gain hype and press for the draft

I agree more picks are better, I just dont know how realistic it is to hope for it

think its more than hype, these guys want to get paid before a potential lockout

lot of underclassman coming out

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

I duuna know

I think Seattle has to take an OT, so Berry should slide down to us at #7. I would take NT Shaun Rodgers as compensation for the trade down.

by 102win on Mar 11, 2010 2:49 PM CST reply actions

Trade with Buffalo

Our 3rd for their 9th and demand their 2nd round pick (41) so they can obtain a francise QB .

9th overall – draft – OT Trent Williams, NT Dan Williams, or DE Jason Pierre-Paul,

41th overall – draft – Center J. D. Walton, FS Natre Allen, WR/KR Mardy Gilyard or NT Cam Thomas

I like the trade down idea, but...

I see us picking up McClain around the 10th spot and then working our way back into the late first round with our 2b pick and a later round pick next year to the Pats so we can pick up Cody and have the ILB/NT combo that made Alabama so awesome. We can pick up Myron Rolle at 2a and a C in the third…I just hope that we can pick up Lilja and that Colin Brown can come in this year and compete for a starting spot.

I really like Myron Rolle for the FS spot and the idea of having McClain AND Cody on the team is almost too good to be true! You don’t have to agree with me…it’s just wishful thinking but something that could possibly happen…

There's no hope with dope...

tmurawsk, you do realize that your opinion poll is skewed and useless

your third option which has garnered a lot of votes is misleadingly phrased at best

to have it say anything about “the best player in the draft” in a poll about trading DOWN when the clearcut best player in the draft is Suh and will be gone well before our lowly #5 pick is unnecessary

had you kept it to a simple choice, two options only … trade down for more picks or stay at #5 (without mentioning names that affect how prospective voters think) then you would have had a valid opinion poll

Settle down man...

That option was merely to state the general consensus that most people on the site believe Eric Berry is the best player in this draft. And you know what. I believe he is the best player in this draft. But of course that is my opinion. And I will respect your opinion. But since I made the poll, I think I like it just the way it is….. :)

What I would do now

Sign C Mawae. Trade DJ and D Morgan to Detriot for their #34 and #161. Trade down with Cleveland to #7 and get NT Shaun Rodgers. Trade our #138 and #140 to Chicago for their #106.Draft goes like this

  1. Bradford
  2. Suh
  3. McCoy
  4. Okung
  5. Claussen
  6. Bulga-OT
  7. Berry to the Chiefs

R1 #7 SS Eric Berry-Tennessee
R2 #34 LB Jerry Hughes-TCU
R2 #36 CB Patrick Robinson-FSU
R2 #50 OT Roger Saffold-Indiana
R3 #68 C J.D. Walton
R4 #99 DE Lamar Houston-Texas
R4 #106 LB Jamar Chaney-Miss St.
R5 #132 WR Andre Roberts-Citadel
R6 #161 LB Micah Johnson-Kentucky

Do teams really give a rat’s ass about the trade value system? Seems like a load of academic bullshit to me.

If KC can trade out, they probably should.

In fact, this might be a good year to trade down more than once, without being too greedy to make the trades a bit more enticing. You can likely do more with the extra picks this year than with a miserly attitude about draft position. For all its “best draft every” press, it seems more that the 4th and 5th rounds are likely to be as productive of talent as the 2nd and 3rd usually are. A guy who doesn’t get all ga-ga about the TOP players, he can maybe stock up on quality depth like nobody’s business, while simultaneously the greater number of picks improves your chances of finding that diamond in the rough.
