Second Chiefs Free Agent Leaves Town

The Kansas City Chiefs have lost their second unrestricted free agent. Yesterday it was Wade Smith to the Houston Texans.

Today it's Sean Ryan to the Washington Redskins.

We passed along a report over the weekend that the Redskins were showing interest in him.

Ryan, 29, came to the Chiefs last season and started off well actually leading the team in touchdown receptions at one point.

However, he cooled off quickly as Todd Haley deactivated him often toward the end of the season.

Of the Chiefs remaining unrestricted free agents, we're waiting to hear on Mike Brown and Bobby Wade.

that'd be funny

poor Skins :)

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

I"m not too worried about any of these guys

…but even if they were horrible, we still need to replace them with other bodies.

Well we may have lost one below average TE,

but don’t worry Chiefs fans, we still have 3-4 below average TEs on the roster.

EXACTLY

My thought…

Pope is a legit NFL TE, at least. I don’t think he’s a legit starter, but legit backup. The other two still haven’t proven they can be.

Pioli has tipped his hand, he knows we need another TE, and I’m sure he’ll bring one in, either through FA or the draft. I’m hoping for FA so we don’t have to waste a draft pick with all the man needs we have.

Nothing like a blocking TE who can't block.

Hopefully Cottam is good to go next season and breaks out like he did in his last game.

by Yashi on Mar 11, 2010 8:11 AM CST reply actions

yep

just like a wide receiver who cant catch. isnt that right BOBBY WADE. he’ll be joing this list soon IMO

by trentchiefsfan on Mar 11, 2010 9:19 AM CST up reply actions

lol

yeah thats true. well he’ll be free of scrutiny from fans one less time. oh well pretty sure every KC fan know that every other KC fans wants him gone

O'Connell

Guy was starting to come on towards the season.. You could see the growth and development taking place, he was making some nice blocks in the run game for Charles..

by Warpaint69 on Mar 11, 2010 8:15 AM CST reply actions

great news

for the chiefs. cant believe anyone would even think about picking up sean ryan. apart from a couple of games he was useless. with all the money the redskins have you would think they might sign a good te worth a bit of money. not some hack like ryan. oh well clears up room on our payroll. chiefs should now sign lilga

by trentchiefsfan on Mar 11, 2010 8:17 AM CST reply actions

If I remember correctly

Weis utilizes the TE more in his offense versus Haley. Know there are a lot of similarities but I know that’s one thing that’s different. Anyone think we make a play for Watson or trade for Olsen or draft one of the receiving TEs like Aaron Hernandez

by golfbard on Mar 11, 2010 8:19 AM CST reply actions

true that

i think any rookie would be an upgrade to us. we have so many holes. but i reckon we take. berry, cody, jd walton, shipley. in that order. unless we trade down or up or trade picks away

by trentchiefsfan on Mar 11, 2010 8:31 AM CST reply actions

please baby jesus

Don’t re-sign mike brown AND bobby wade! Just sign Ben Watson and Lilja. They would easily upgrade the safety and punt return positions. I can’t watch brown’s slow butt trying to make plays and Wade make anymore fair catches.

Smith would had been a good one to resign

But not for the price he got in Houston.

I actually met him once last year.

He was at Down Syndrome walk at Arrowhead. It was a quick encounter, but he was a super nice guy. He made a few nice plays for us last year, too. Nothing drastic, and he certainly (literally) dropped the ball a few times as well. Not the end of the world, but I had a general liking of the guy. Just going against the grain a little, I guess…

My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:

1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.

Yeah.

He didn’t want to hurt the other team’s feelings by catching the ball or getting in their way on blocks.

just its not huge news that we lost him

by trentchiefsfan on Mar 11, 2010 8:56 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, not lamenting the loss or anything...

…aside from leading in receptions at one point early last season (I believe). He wasn’t a major role-player, obviously. Just giving him a nice send-off before I probably never talk about him on here again. ;)

regardless of his role off the field, I DID find it cool of him to take time to come to the DS walk last year, in spite of not being a major player with less than a year experience in KC...

Smith and Ryan

I do not understand the Wade Smith “love”…..I think maybe because things were so bad people fell in love with a “serviceable”, at best, O-lineman. I would rather draft a youngster and watch him get demolished for a year than just “settle” for serviceable. Oh yeah who is Sean Ryan? ;)))

by UsAIdtHAtAlrEaDy on Mar 11, 2010 9:08 AM CST reply actions

think he was some sort of TE

only for a couple of weeks though. then he became a liability

by trentchiefsfan on Mar 11, 2010 9:10 AM CST up reply actions

How are they not real?

Just because there isn’t a salary cap doesn’t mean the teams have the millions of dollars to pay the players.

by groundedchevy on Mar 11, 2010 9:34 AM CST up reply actions

if they are not real

wat exactly are we paying the players with. theress still a payroll. money still comes from clark hunt bank account and into the players pocket. in sean ryans case, that money could be spent better elsewhere. like signing ryan lilga. anyone who can keep peyton manning upright. should be on the chiefs roster.

by trentchiefsfan on Mar 11, 2010 9:41 AM CST up reply actions

TE Core should need 1 more

I think Cottam is ready to break out, O’Connell is close, and Pope helps big time in the run game. Pioli will bring in one more for competition, either FA or later round draft pick.

Chiefs are going to surprise alot of people in 2010 !!!!

by ChiefsMonster on Mar 11, 2010 9:59 AM CST reply actions

cottum needs to break out quick

I brag about this secret weapon we have in this guy and the guy has been letting me down for years he needs to get the rock more he is such a huge target throw him the ball he could.b a star

He was starting to do that when he broke his freaking neck last year.

I’m just hoping he comes back healthy to begin with, though of course I want him to do great.

by Archyrr on Mar 11, 2010 10:18 AM CST up reply actions

I'm continuously amazed

At how excited people are by Cottam. I guess it’s the same reason that got him drafted in the 3rd. Measurables.

On the field, he has done very little (this includes college).

For us, he’s had one good game, literally. Played well against the Browns, yes, and then he got hurt. If you couldn’t get on the field with the TE’s that were on our roster, that says quite a bit.

I’m not saying cut him, I’m saying he can’t be counted on. Pioli has made it clear the TE position needs to be addressed this offseason, I’m sure he will.

I’m pulling for Cottam, but I’d like us to bring in a FA to start (Ben Watson?) and have Cottam compete with Pope and O’Connell to be the #2.

by kcsno56 on Mar 11, 2010 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

good, later sean ryan....

Im hoping bobby wade signs somewhere so we don’t see his name attached to the chiefs.

Scott Pioli will find a way to make NT the biggest offseason priority.
