Chiefs Sign Former Cardinals Receiver

While I was sleeping, the third shift on AP caught wind of a new receiver coming to town -- Jerheme Urban.

Urban, 29, is coming most recently from the Arizona Cardinals, where he played under Todd Haley for two seasons. He had his two best seasons of his career under Haley.

He was originally an undrafted free agent for the Seahawks and apparently left an impression, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (via Wiki):

Urban is considered by many to be the ultimate team player. Seattle Post-Intelligencer sportswriter Jim Miller wrote of Urban's tenure with the Seahawks that he "...wasn't a good soldier, he was a great one." Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck said of Urban, "Whatever the definition of a Seahawk is, he's it."

He moved onto the Cowboys practice squad in 2006 and was cut before the 2007 season when he then signed with the Cards.

He is 6'3", 212 pounds and comes from Trinity University in Texas.

He may be more valuable than his numbers show

The fact that he got 34 catches playing on a team behind Fitz, Boldin and Breaton shows that he makes the most of his chances and that he likely holds on to the ball.

He also may be a very good down field blocking receiver which if you watched the Chiefs receivers try to block on bubble screens last year you will know, is a major weakness on our team.

a 4th string receiver doing really well with the next team....

sounds familiar….

Oh yeah…

Joe Horn – we should have never let that one get away…

the POINT BEING....

that just because someone is a 4th string doesn’t mean that they aren’t good. Joe Horn was a case and point.

thanks for the info, Joel

so now … we don’t “need” Tate

While we don't NEED Tate

He is still a game changer on offense, Urban isn’t. I’ll tell ya one thing though he can def. catch the football. A great 3rd down possession receiver. I think this makes a big defference to the offense but not from a number standpoint

i live about a block from trinity in san antonio

he might be the only guy from that school to play in the NFL

Sounds like another addition to the "right 53"

All for one and one for all and all that.

Can’t wait for the season to start and see all these guys that play for the love of the game.

My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:

"Shut the f--- up."- Matt Cassel
"WHAT THE F---?!?!"- Todd Haley

re

judas priest Haley finally got his receiver that can block good enough lol

He’s not a bad receiver.

You've Got Another Thing Comin'

Sorry, couldn’t resist the Judas Priest reference…

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

by kcchiefsfan72 on Mar 11, 2010 11:09 AM CST up reply actions

lol

read up a little. AZ fans rag on him a lot for dropped passes. He averages about 5 plays a game. Contributes about as much as our tight end, basically. So hold off on drafting him in your fantansy league – unless they score blocks, of course ;-)

Depth Perspective...

love it from that angle. Hope he becomes a pleasant surprise…

A Chiefs fan living in Pittsburgh, this is great...

…I have to constantly hear about Ben Rapelisberger and guys through the years like Joey Porter talk trash and James Harrison and Santonio Holmes get into trouble….and the fans still love them.

Pioli & Haley are building a time of solid, high-character individuals who are playing football because they love the game, not just because of the money & fame. Chemistry on a team is SO crucial, and adding guys like Thomas Jones & Urban are great – and affordable – moves. Again, The Right 53.

by HTrayne on Mar 11, 2010 8:21 AM CST reply actions

Seems like a good pickup.

Definitely has the size for the part, and I like the move to get a player who’s familiar with Haley and his offense and may be a nice 3rd down target. Having a 3rd receiver who could win one-on-one matchups is so crucial – when Cassel was successful in New England it was Jabar Gaffney. Last season – no one.

Could be a terrific signing.

How much and how long?

Any details on his contract, I certainly hope we aren’t overpaying.

by OmahaNick on Mar 11, 2010 8:42 AM CST reply actions

I wouldn't worry about Pioli overypaying for anyone.

Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.

Solid signing...

Hopefully we build up our depth to the point that he has to compete to be active every week.

Right now, IMO, he’s the #3 WR on the roster, and that’s a little scary.

I think for the WR core to be where Haley wants it, Urban’s your #5 WR. If we draft a legit WR that can be our slot, and Urban is our #4 next season, that’d probably be fine, too.

Urban > Long, IMO. I’ve read on the other thread a lot of guys saying Long will be ahead of him on the depth chart…god I hope not.

Just a training camp body

and everyone gets excited? As usual, it doesn’t take much to get people excited about the Chiefs in KC. Clark Hunt has to love it

I don't want no Yo-Yos

thats kind of redundant to say...

any news is good news because at the state the chiefs were in after the season, theres NOTHING to be excited about.

Good pickup IF he is our fourth receiver.

We can't underestimate the value of adding this quality of depth

I would not be surprised if Urban beats out Bowe for the #2 spot if Bowe doesn’t learn how to catch between now and the beginning of the season, or the #1 spot if Chambers doesn’t learn how to block before the beginning of the season.

Wow I'm pretty sure 90% of the time I disagree with your posts

Urban beat out Bowe for #2….Yes Bowe needs to mature a great deal but he still has put up some impressive numbers his first 3 years in the league. Everyone expects these kids to be mature adults right of the bat. Especially with his revolving door with schemes, coaches, and qbs. Support the actual small amount of talent we have on the team. No reason to bring them down all the time

by groundedchevy on Mar 11, 2010 9:42 AM CST up reply actions

I agree with you that Bowe's development hasn't been in the best of circumstances...just saying that

Urban is mature although largely unproven having been behind Boldin, Fitz, Breaston, etc., and Bowe is developing, but needs to continue to show improvement.

We don’t know how Urban will do on the team. I expect Bowe will become an outstanding receiver in the NFL. Chambers is mature and a great receiver, but has done a poor job of blocking (not sure how his blocking stats were late in the season…he may have improved drastically from early reports).

I’m not trying to “bring them down”. In fact, the majority of my posts are positive regarding our players. That said, you should note that I said “IF”:

I would not be surprised if Urban beats out Bowe for the #2 spot if Bowe doesn’t learn how to catch between now and the beginning of the season

Maybe I should qualify that statement by saying, he drops a lot of easy passes while he often catches balls that others couldn’t, but that’s not anything new to us fans.

I tried to make my comments emphasize not how poor our receivers are, but how valuable quality receivers added in FA will improve competition and increase overall quality of play across the board…it’s great for the entire receiving corps and the team.

My comments covered both of our top two receivers’ most noticeable weaknesses. I wasn’t trying to slam Bowe. I appreciated the fan post yesterday comparing Bowe to Pro Bowl receivers in their first two years in the NFL. It proves Bowe is on track with them.

My expectations for Bowe are that he exceeds the quality of Chambers and anyone else we pick up in the future and becomes a perennial Pro Bowler. I think Haley’s coaching helped him drastically this year with his down field blocking game. He’s becoming a well rounded football player under Haley.

From what I’ve seen of Urban on film and evaluations of him, and knowing that Haley likes him as a football player, I tend to believe that he’ll surprise us all. He’s tough in the middle, finds the open spot, retains his focus on the ball, and is likely an excellent ST player and down-field blocker having been under Haley before. Will he be a great receiver for KC? We’ll see.

Battle for the slot

Urban is a good pick up for depth, but Haley seems to invision Long as his speedy, little Wes Welker type. IT will be a fun preseason to watch.

Chiefs are going to surprise alot of people in 2010 !!!!

Why do people think this?

I’m just curious. I keep seeing people post this.

Long played simply b/c of how terrible our other options were.

I saw this coming, he actually isn't bad

I saw this coming. I see Agee Crumpler TE from Titans and Danny Clark LB Giants.

by FrankPitts on Mar 11, 2010 9:31 AM CST reply actions

Urban was actually ahead of Early Doucet until this year

He was the 4th WR but he had a bad fumble in the playoffs and the HC was quite put out with him. This guy isn’t a bad receiver.

by FrankPitts on Mar 11, 2010 9:37 AM CST reply actions

Living here in Phoenix...

I have seen him play quite a bit…did his job, is a good pro, and takes advantage of his opportunities. Not flashy, but good hands, and blocks!!!!!Not gonna set the field on fire with his speed, but is a solid pick up and knows Haleys system. Should fit right in.,

Pioli and Haley are infusing some good things

Thomas Jones – The ultimate professional, great leader, and locker room guy

Shaun Smith – Has the nasty attitude and meanness that the defense is lacking

Jerhme Urban – Great locker room guy, ultimate teammate

All these guys might not be the saviors, but they will greatly affect chemistry, locker room, work ethic, and the way our guys go about business. I like all the moves so far. Good good depth. If Pioli keeps it up, and drafts well, we wont be talking about "process" for long, but we’ll be talking about "wins".

by Larryemcdaniel on Mar 11, 2010 9:56 AM CST reply actions

great addition

especially considering our current weapons. does all the little things and makes the most of his chances. been waiting for this guy to have an opportunity, nice that it’s with the Chiefs.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again

Jerheme Urban needs to be the team Captain of the Reggie Cleveland Allstars.

Reggie Cleveland All-Stars

As per Bill Simmons’ wikipedia page

Simmons also created the “Reggie Cleveland All-Stars,” a list of sports figures whose names would seem to indicate that they are of a different race or ethnicity than they actually are. Simmons first mentioned the phenomenon with Marcus Giles and Sidney Ponson. One of his readers suggested Reggie Cleveland (a white former pitcher with a black-sounding name) as the best possible example of this phenomenon which led Simmons to name the list after Cleveland.24

He also noted in his 2006 NBA Draft diary that Patrick O’Bryant, a first round pick of the Golden State Warriors, was a “mortal lock” to be named to the All-Star team. In a 2007 column, Simmons named former Denver Broncos linebacker Rulon Jones as a “first-ballot Reggie Cleveland All-Stars Hall of Famer.”

In a recent column Bill mentioned that he wanted to name his second child “Nate” so he could create his own Reggie Cleveland All-Star from scratch named Nate Simmons.

The long and short of it, White guy with a black name.

Good pick-up

It is a solid pick up but not great. You have to give urban some credit, he played behind 2 of the best recievers in the game and a 3rd (breaston) that would be a #2 on most teams. He is a good blocker and will help our special teams. Pioli and Haley sticking with the right 53. Now all we need is to grab a O-line and draft heavy on Defense.
