Details On Alabama, Kansas Pro Days

We've got some details filtering in on a few key players in the Alabama and Kansas pro day.

Alabama

First, nearly every team in the NFL is at the Alabama pro day so we've gotta assume the Chiefs are there as well.

LB Rolando McClain ran a 4.74 forty yard dash, which is about what he was expected to do. He didn't run at the NFL Combine due to an injury.

DT Terrence Cody weighed in at 348 pounds, which is excellent news for him. He started at 370 pounds at the Senior Bowl and got down to 354 pounds at the Combine.

Kansas

I'm told the following teams are there: BrownsEaglesJetsCowboysSteelersRavensVikings and Bears.

And, yes, the Chiefs are indeed there as well.

Looks like Cody has been puttin' in the work.

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

Cody must be working his A$$ off...or is on the Dwayn Bowe diet plan ;)

So you think you are so important that no one can replace you? Put your finger in a bucket of water and pull it out. Does it leave a hole? Nope, just some ripples that eventually calm themselves!

I think he can definetly get in the shape he needs to.

I think what scares people more is can he be disciplined enough to maintain it over the course of a season.

good stuff and ty for passing it along, Joel ... personally, I am IMPRESSED that Pioli & Co are ...

… going all the way to Lawrence, KS just for their Pro Day … it really shows how much they are willing to go out of their way to improve the team …

McClain is going to drop to the second round a la Maualuga.

As an ILB with some questionable tackling skills and now putting up some not so impressive combine drill numbers its only going to hurt him. Not saying his talent and instincts arent 1st round material but I wouldnt be surprised to see him drop down the board.

GB!

Glad to see you and I can agree on something for once!

I’m not sure he’ll fall to the 2nd round, but he should no longer be in the discussion for our #5 pick.

I would love for him to fall to 2a, but I’m guessing he’ll be later round 1.

by kcsno56 on Mar 10, 2010 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

No way mclain makes it

to the second…..mauluga was supposed to go top 20…..mclain is supposed to go top 10…..i dont see denver passing on him, especially with all the dline help there bringing in

by cassel4prez on Mar 10, 2010 1:42 PM CST up reply actions

On AP many think he's supposed to go top 10

Most other places (before today) had him just outside the top 10.

12 seems to be his most common landing spot.

it will be Brandon Spikes.

No way Green Bay passes on a top 10 player.. They are the greatest example of drafting BPA

True...

Packers like BPA, but they are not taking a LB this year. You don’t draft backup LB’s in Rd. 1. They are one of the deepest LB team in the NFL right now.

by kcsno56 on Mar 10, 2010 2:03 PM CST up reply actions

I think...

he has been over hyped by the blogosphere because of his insane intangibles. I’m telling ILBs are like interior lineman. They tend to fall to the 2nd round unless they have side line to side line speed. Lauranautis and Maulaluga were projected to go where McClain is at this time last year.

1. Suh will fall to us at 5
2. McClain will fall to us at 2a
3. The Chiefs will trade DJ and Dorsey

"questionable tackling skills"?

That’s simply not true with him. He’s extremely sound in his tackling technique, to the extent that I would feel quite comfortable stating that it’s the best of any of the top twenty linebackers in this draft class. And this is a pro day workout, not a combine.

by burntorangehorn on Mar 10, 2010 2:48 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree.

His tackling is average at best. He has no concept of leverage, hits players high all the time and he arm tackles way too much. That may work in college but wont in the NFL.

Read up on him.

Most will agree that he has among the best tackling technique in the class.

Cody still scares me

I have a feeling he’s just working like this to bump his draft position, but once he gets paid, I’m afraid he’ll be like Ryan Simms……….please let us stay away from him.

Pretty impressive. I think Cody is solidly in the 1st, and probably won’t get by SD, if he lasts that long.

I bet he...

goes to Buffalo in the 2nd. Maybe even the NYJ would take him as an insurance policy for Jenkins in the 1st.

McClain

Might have re-aggravated his hamstring injury.

Take it for what its worth.

Quote from ex-Ravens Scout and creator of Movethesticks.com

“There’ve been some stud LB’s lately: Willis, Beason, 3 SC LB’s last year & Curry. I don’t think McClain is in that class."

I agree completely. Those guys have speed and explosiveness. McClain lacks both. He is very intelligent and has a high football IQ, but he isn’t a top 10 pick imo.

If you listen to anyone other than his agent (or burntorange) McClain was NOT injured at the combine.

Here’s a few links.

I guess he just came clean...

That he has Chron’s disease.

I’m not going to lie, I don’t know anything about it, so I don’t know how serious it is.

Everything makes a lot more sense now, probably should’ve just disclosed it earlier, but I’ll be pulling for him, hope it’s not too serious.

by kcsno56 on Mar 10, 2010 4:11 PM CST reply actions

Cody has positioned himself to be a solid late 1st early 2nd rd pick. If he is available when the chiefs pick in the 2nd we have to take him. He is a real "Monster " upfront Hali would get atleast 13 sacks with him pushing that middle. That is if the one of the TOP 2 DT’s dont slideto us.

yeah I worry that with all the time people will have for round 2, if someone wants cody they will leap frog us

Gotta cut mcclain slack

He has chron’s disease. Check the fanshots for the story

by Larryemcdaniel on Mar 10, 2010 4:25 PM CST reply actions

re

Don’t want to jump on McClain like everybody else but there hasn’t been a pair of d-tackles in front of a linebacker like those two in college for a LONG time. He gets a lot of notoriety because he’s the leader of the best defense in the country and his ability to use his brain on the football field as well as being a mature young man. He’s the first linebacker you would let your daughter date. But there are a lot of guys with higher upside. I like the post about him not being in Curry’s class. Couldn’t have put it better.

by tenacious rdc on Mar 10, 2010 4:42 PM CST reply actions

does this drop him into 2nd 3rd or 4th round pick

McClain of course, I still don’t want the walking fat man.

by sgthall on Mar 10, 2010 5:08 PM CST reply actions

Rolando McClain would still be a 1st round pick.

Terence Cody is anywhere as high as a 1st round pick, and as low as a 2nd round pick.

Chron's shouldn't affect his draft stock at all

Especially if has been living with it as long as he has.

I know because I’ve been living with it for 7 years. It’s not a life ender, and with proper medication it generally can go into remission. Go do some Google searching.

In fact, I’d argue the fact that he is an athlete and has had a regular exercise routine has only helped him. He’s probably also benefited from a staff nutrionalist at Alabama too.

Chron’s can be debilitating, but he would not be where he is in his life if his Chron’s was that serious.

I’d even argue that this makes him a stronger candidate, as living with this kind of disease takes a lot of mental fortitude. Some days you just don’t want to do anything, and the fact that he has achieved so much is testament that is not letting Chron’s affect him.

NOW – there needs to be a lot more disclosure as to what medication he is taking. A lot of Chron’s is treated initially with steroids and then usually an immuno-suppressive combined with other things. There are also much stronger medications. I think the NFL and teams have to have all of this information, and that may affect his draft status

by tebunker on Mar 10, 2010 6:47 PM CST reply actions

I for one am glad to hear you say this

And I hope you are correct.

I know one thing, though, Ro is a bad, bad man.

by alakan81 on Mar 10, 2010 8:41 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Interesting

Crohn’s Disease has a fairly wide spectrum in terms of severity and response to therapy, and it’s true that glucocorticoids (‘steroids’) are a mainstay of treatment. One of the potential problems with glucocorticoid therapy is that while small chronic daily doses might be tolerated by a professional athlete, if he has to take high-dose glucocorticoids to combat ‘flares’ of Crohns, that would be much tougher: muscle weakness is a long-term side effect, along with the potential for weakening of bones as well (think compression fractures of the vertebrae). Right off the top of my head, I can’t think of any previous players with Crohn’s, but I think there have been athletes in MLB and the NBA who had Crohn’s disease.

As noted by tebunker, most patients progress to additional drugs on top of glucocorticoids, and those medications can have potential adverse effects that could be tough for a professional athlete— e.g., low blood counts.

by Wheatboy74 on Mar 10, 2010 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

It's frustrating and unfortunate, also...

… that this becomes public information. I REALLY believe that there needs to be some protection for the privacy of medical records and conditions for athletes…. granted, in the environment of draft, agents and the whole scout-coach-GM NFL apparatus, keeping medical confidentiality is probably not tenable. Sigh.
