Awesome!

Glad to hear that news, hope he gets his shit together and becomes a force.

by Coady on Mar 10, 2010 12:56 PM CST reply actions

Sweet...

he might be one of those no name signs that is extremely productive. With Crennel coaching him up he could go back to when he was pretty damn good. At the very least he will be a decent stop-gap (a lot better than Edwards) for our young NT project that we draft. (Thomas or Troup)

1. Suh will fall to us at 5
2. McClain will fall to us at 2a
3. The Chiefs will trade DJ and Dorsey

by I_Bleed_Red. on Mar 10, 2010 12:58 PM CST reply actions

take it easy on edwards

He has played in every game for the past 4 seasons. Last season, as far as I can tell, he played more snaps than any other 3-4 DT other than Ratliff in Dallas. Maybe if the guy had a break now and then, enter smith, he could be reasonably effective. He’s certainly not the answer for us, but we shouldn’t kick him to the curb. His durability alone shows he deserves a spot on the roster. IMO draft a late round DT that challenges smith and edwards for the #2 DT but keep all three for a rotation.

by just a guy on Mar 10, 2010 2:04 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Totally agree. Ron Edwards as a bottom of the rotation guy getting 10-15 snaps per game is a pretty effective player.

by dablueguy on Mar 10, 2010 3:46 PM CST up reply actions

Ya thats what they say every year....

but for some reason Edwards has always stepped up his game another level.

Go Chiefs!!!!

by ravenhawk on Mar 10, 2010 6:16 PM CST up reply actions

ok I’m off of the Shawn Rogers bandwagon, If we draft a young NT we should be fine.

by mcclanahanman on Mar 10, 2010 12:58 PM CST reply actions

I'm still on it

I like Smith, but he hasn’t been any more productive than Ron Edwards.

by Nick Britt on Mar 10, 2010 3:12 PM CST up reply actions

Obviously Crennel likes the guy and thats good enough for me

We can take Dan Williams off the list for pick #5. Suh, Berry, or McClain. The debate continues

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

by BJ Kissel on Mar 10, 2010 12:59 PM CST reply actions

If Suh is there, take him.

but he won’t be….so berry or mcclain

by TDubb on Mar 10, 2010 1:00 PM CST up reply actions

And start him where?

we have too many holes to fill to be picking another DE. Even if we were to trade Dorsey, we probably wouldnt get much for him with his huge contract. I really don’t see the appeal of Suh to us. there was a lot of hype about Dorsey coming out and he fell to us and we took him. I dont think we got a ‘steal’, and I dont think we would if we took Suh at 5 either.

by SayHeyWerd on Mar 10, 2010 8:45 PM CST up reply actions

his talent is huge

and his heart is bigger. He’s the best player in the draft. period.

by TDubb on Mar 11, 2010 8:38 AM CST up reply actions

No debate...

Suh is gone at #5. Berry is better value then McClain. Coaches like D. Williams and Tamba…. they resigned Vrabel and DJ, we will get a LB in the draft, just not McClain.

Berry is the pick.

Man crush on Eric Berry.

by SwimCoach on Mar 10, 2010 1:01 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

If it goes Bradford, and then Okung - which i think is very possible

we could trade with TB and get suh – washington won’t take McCoy and TB would still get him at #5. Problem is what would we have to send TB to get that pick? Its possible though.

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

by BJ Kissel on Mar 10, 2010 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think Pioli would move up two spots to get SUH. If he is there at #5 then he takes him otherwise it's BPA and that would probably be Berry, IMO.

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

WRITE IT DOWN!

by BigRedChief on Mar 10, 2010 1:18 PM CST up reply actions

I agree on Berry

On suh, not saying its what we should do, but I wont be surprised if we do. We don’t know how highly rated these guys are on don’s board.

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

by BJ Kissel on Mar 10, 2010 1:35 PM CST up reply actions

Suh's a Pioli guy

He loves football and loves to play. He works hard and makes others better. I watched most of the Nebraska games over the last 2 years. In the bowl game last year they were going to take him out to rest him and he wanted to play. Not for the spotlight, but because he loves to compete. If he’s not a Pioli guy, i must be crazy.

by TDubb on Mar 10, 2010 4:19 PM CST up reply actions

Why won't the redskins take McCoy?

they’re moving over to the 3-4 too, how can you say Shanahan will pass on a good young DE?

by mcclanahanman on Mar 10, 2010 1:27 PM CST up reply actions

their line is a mess, they have no future QB, and they gave their NT 100 million

giving McCoy a huge contract doesn’t make sense, atleast to me. But who knows when it comes to Wash?

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

by BJ Kissel on Mar 10, 2010 1:36 PM CST up reply actions

McCoy would be a DE in their 3-4

You don’t think that that’s a very important position on their team?

by mcclanahanman on Mar 10, 2010 1:46 PM CST up reply actions

IMO no, not compared to their OL and QB situation.

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?

4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

by BJ Kissel on Mar 10, 2010 1:49 PM CST up reply actions

You don't think

Shanahan is smart enough to tailor an offense to Campbell’s strengths?

I’m sure Shanahan will try to trade for a LT somewhere instead of going after Okung.

by mcclanahanman on Mar 10, 2010 1:52 PM CST up reply actions

I never said anything about Shannahan

But Campbell is not their long-term answer at QB AND their O-line was terrible. Yeah, They could trade for Gaither and that would be a great move. But I don’t think its likely that they would take McCoy if he fell to them. That’s all I said.

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?

by BJ Kissel on Mar 11, 2010 2:00 PM CST up reply actions

i'm not really getting this trade up stuff

first of all, you usually want to trade back when you’re in the top 5, and that usually doesn’t happen because nobody wants to give up picks and have to eat that huge contract. i think the only reason you trade up is for a franchise QB. second of all, why would we trade up to get a DE when we already have two recent top 5 DEs, i mean, you really want to take a DE in the top 5 three years in a row, that just makes absolutely no sense to me. i think people that are saying this just have a man crush on Suh, you need to think more realistically because i’m sure that’s what the chiefs are doing. just because someones the very best player in the draft doesn’t mean we have to have him.

by E.C. on Mar 10, 2010 1:42 PM CST up reply actions

Everyone has a man-crush on a certain player, even Pioli

and if its Suh, he will get him. And i won’t be surprised, thats all. I’m not pretending to know what we should do or how this will all play out. Its just a scenario if he likes Suh. Trading down sounds great, but if everyone knows you want to do it they wont give you very good value.

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?

5. Sign him up.

by BJ Kissel on Mar 10, 2010 1:48 PM CST up reply actions

true

but i threw out a comment a few weeks ago about their contracts.

Disclaimer – this is not what I think should happen, its just speculation.

IF we did take Suh and traded Dorsey, I would think that it would lower our overall payroll considering we would have Suh’s contract and not Dorsey’s + whoever we take at 5.

I thought you and I talked about this already...

Dorsey is really cheap now. His big money is already paid for in the form of signing bonus.

Suh would be WAY more expensive than Dorsey.

I don’t see what’s wrong with drafting a Dan Williams and letting him ease into his role with Smith. Its nice to have depth.

McClain just ran a 4.74

he’s not what I see at #5 pick. Doesnt seem elite. We can find a 4.74 guy in the 2nd-4th round. I’m leaning toward Berry or Okung, in that order.

I like Troup better than Thomas

Only thing about Troup I don’t like is his frame. I don’’t think he will be able to put too much more weight onto it. I don’t think Troup is an every-down NT, but I think he could be a solid rotational player. If Troup is available in the 5th I would support drafting him.

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

by kcchiefsfan72 on Mar 10, 2010 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

Another good signing for us.

It might not be sexy, but it does address a position of need. Of course that is the Pioli way; getting players who are not big name free agents but who can fit into the system that is being run. Besides, with the contract only being for one year the investment was minimal.

by Cassel This! on Mar 10, 2010 1:05 PM CST reply actions

As long as we draft a NT in the 2nd round then I'm happy with this pickup...

We need someone that can actually produce and knows the position. Crennel wouldn’t have pushed to get him if he didn’t think he would produce. As long as we have a NTotf that we pick up in the draft then this is the best news!

how is dorsey undersized for DE

he’s about 300, isn’t that perfect? plus size isn’t everything, he wasn’t selected at 5 because he was the biggest guy in the draft, but because he was very good. also, haley thinks he is one of the core players on the team, i don’t think he’s going anywhere soon

Among the AP crowd, it seems to be accepted as a given that Smith

is going to be better than Edwards. I hope that is true, but can anyone articulate why this will be the case? The guy has a very spotty NFL record. Again, I hope he comes in and shines, I just am skeptical about everyone “knowing” that he is an immediate upgrade. Anyone care to educate me on this?

by WoodyardBBQ on Mar 10, 2010 1:29 PM CST reply actions

yeah i'm wtih ya, not that i don't like the signing

but more because i think that edwards might surprise some people, i mean, he was learning a new pos last year. the chiefs oviously want to keep him and it probably wont hurt when TJ gets better and starts demanding some double teams; he looked lost last year, it was like two guys taking on the whole offensive line

Smith might be a good 3rd down option at NT for the Chiefs.

If they drafted some monster, like say Cody, to stuff the run, they could bring in a guy like Smith for 3rd down who might be better at rushing the passer and collapsing the pocket.

I kind of hope for 1. Berry, 2a Spikes 2b Cody...a man can dream right?

i dont think Cody will be there at 2b

Out of those three(Cody,Tate,Spikes), the one most likely to still be there is spikes.

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.

He is purely a depth player IMO

I think we will still address it in the draft ……but he knows Romeos D and could help out with teaching it to the other players…….coaches always like a few of their guys that know em already……and who knows…he may do well enough to free other guys up…

He did well with Crennel 3 yrs ago

“Smith’s best statistical season came in 2007, his first year with Crennel, when Smith posted 48 tackles, 14 assists, two sacks and a forced fumble, appearing in 15 games with 11 starts, all career highs.”

I have a question:

forgetting the 1st round pick or let’s assume it’s Berry, who do we pick w/ 2A if Pouncey, Spikes and Cody are all available. I think the hardest pick is going to be the 2A pick b/c there’s going to be a few players that we NEED but can only pick one and the others won’t be there @ 2B. Opinions

The Greatest Trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

Pouncey IMO - would have said Cody until we picked up smith

I don't think the pickup of Smith is going to alter the draft at all

Now if we pick up Shaun Rogers, that might influence the draft.

This year will be better

Is Tate available?

I’d take him over Pouncey and Spikes…

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

yeah for me its tate/spikes/cody all very very close

I think about spikes at 2b

Tate, Pouncey, or Cody at 2a would be tough.

2. Do they have high football IQ?

mid free agency draft wish 1.4:
1. eric berry fs
2. sergio kindle olb
2. brandon spikes ilb
3. jd walton oc
4. myron rolle ss
5. jacoby ford wr
5. torell troup nt
5. dorin dickerson te

I feel the same!

2a and 2b are the keys to this draft making an instant impact. pick #1 will be impact starter in my mind. I’d take Pouncey or Cody since the lines are so important. Spikes may be available at 2b. Doubt the other 2 guys make it that far.

Deep thoughts, by Jack Handy

We talk about how overweight America has become yet finding a 340 pounde guy to clog the middle of a football game is tough.

Another incremental improvement.

Hands down an upgrade over what we have but we are a better team overall now than the start of last year and i got a great feeling about this draft. Give me Berry and Walton. Only 2 guys i really want, well besides Tate

by RamX21 on Mar 10, 2010 1:56 PM CST reply actions

I agree

Building from the bottom up. Good NFL teams have quality depth, that’s what Pioli is trying to do here now.

Nowhere

Not once I have read mention here about Shaun Smith being the Brown that coldcocked Quinn’s pretty ass. I love it.

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

Remember, Brandon Flowers is working out with Berry, and they really like each other

I don’t know what impact this will have on the team’s draft decision, but it can’t hurt. If Flowers gives glowing reviews about Berry to the brass, it may just make their mind up. I still think he is the best BPA, and with his size and speed, he can be so versitile and line up about anywhere. An offenses nightmare! We’ve now got an NT, who can at least be part of the rotation, and even better if he gets his head on straight. He has displayed alot of talent, at times, but it all depends on his attitude. I hope he has grown up, and veterans like Vrabel, Jones and Waters can give him an attitude adjutment, if he needs it. We now have very good complimentary RB, who we got for less than the Jets offerd him. I hope we nab Lilja, and I would be pretty much satisfied with FA. Anybody else would just be icing on the cake. I’m mixed about Antonio Bryant. There’s a reason he has been on about 3 or 4 teams. He can be a locker room cancer, and we don’t need that. I’ll bet some AFC West teams are watching us real close, and I don’t think they will look at their schedule in 2010 and count us as an automatic W this season.

Bryant signed with the bengals

I agree about berry. He’s talented enough and has the right attitude. Ready for Goddell to call his name come April 22!

Chiefs draft wishlist:
Berry, then a combo of BPA and NEED
Time to take back the AFC West
Go Chiefs

Who would have been better: Jamal Williams or Shaun Smith

Smith clearly has youth on his side, but if this is a stop-gap, interim move, then who would be the better NT for the next 1-2 years (both from a playing perspective, and also a mentoring perspective)?
