Thomas Jones is the New Marcus Allen!
Remember when King Carl signed a running back that had been dumped by his former team because he was 33 years old and in the doghouse with the owner?
Marcus Allen had FIVE productive years for the Chiefs after we acquired him and I think the superbly conditioned Thomas Jones could have a similar 3-5 year run.
Jones is two years younger than Allen (31 vs. 33), but has a little more mileage than Allen did since Al Davis benched him for a couple of years before dumping him.
He’s played in 71 straight games which is the longest active streak for a running back in the league (Green Bay RB Ryan Grant is #2 with 47). Over the first 10 years of his career, he missed only 12 games and has not missed a game since the 2005 season with the Bears.
Jones has rushed for more yards in his 10 years prior to becoming a Chief (9,217) than Allen rushed for in his 11 years prior to becoming a Chief (8,545).
Jones joins a backfield with the budding star, Jamaal Charles.
Allen joined a backfield with the bust, Harvey Williams.
I think we should all respect and salute what our GM has done for us. It's not often that you see a running back who rushed for 1,402 yards in the previous year signing a modest financial deal to become a complimentary back. A running back who's strong between the tackles and in the red zone. Who's an excellent receiver out of the backfield and a very good blocker. A running back who represents a strong insurance policy in case Jamaal Charles isn't durable enough to hold up for an entire season.
If Charles and Jones stay healthy for the entire season, the Chiefs will have arguably the best running back tandem in the NFL in 2010.
Time to turn our attention to the draft and pray that Pioli can address NT, C and Safety in the 2010 NFL Draft. I'm personally rooting for:
1 - Eric Berry
2A - Maurkice Pouncey
2B - Terrence Cody or Cam Thomas

Interesting comparison
Nicely done, however, even with that—I’m not convinced that TJ is HOF caliber. I sure hope so, but Jonesin’ isnt there yet.
I have to agree with Ren
Marcus had this inane ability to gain one or two yards not matter what. If we got it to a goal line or short yardage, Allen would go over the top or sneak through a crease and get the first down on, what seemed to be, every time he tried.
Im not sure that TJ has this same unique talent.

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
I'll make more general comments (mostly good), farther down. But props to Marcus...
When he entered the league (more fumble-prone that Jamaal Charles, BTW), he had truly elite speed. Jones never had that, to my knowledge.
valid comparison
he’s NOT saying that Jones is as talented, or is a sure fire HOF guy like Allen…
Just that he could have the same effect on the team, and serve a similar role here as Marcus did… which I agree.
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB
I was very young in 1993 so I dont remember for sure
but wasnt Marcus Allen traded for Harvey “giraffe neck” Williams?
The studs from the 2010 draft class will be: DT Ndamukong Suh, S Eric Berry, RB C.J. Spiller, RB Jahvid Best, WR Arrelious Benn, WR Golden Tate, WR Mardy Gilyard, OT Charles Brown, CB Kyle Wilson and S Chad Jones
I was gonna say the same thing
I’m pretty sure he was

Welcome Thomas Jones…. your more of an Emmet Thomas type of back.
Brodie's better than Cassel
NO
Allen wanted to be here, Jones wanted to be in Cleveland. He was just looking for a pay check.

He’s a FA… if he wanted to go somewhere else… he would have

Looked for FanPost with "Jones" in the subject line to say my piece on Jones.
Probably been covered in far more graceful prose than mine, but payin’ the man $2-$3 million a year is RIGHT in line for what RBs should be paid. I think Tomlinson is the definition of the all-around back, but Jones, even with fairly limited receiving yards, is a “natural” all-around RB. I keep trying to watch Indy-NYJ on the DVR, and in this current, half-hearted attempt, am at 2:22 in the 4th quarter. Jets have the ball, down 3 points, and they have the ball. 1st and 10. Freeney applies the pressure. Jones drops the dump-off pass – oh my God, that was the Freeney injury play. 2nd and 10, pass to #81.
Completed for the 1st at the Jets’ 47. 1st and 10 Sanchez is picked off and the Colts are on their way to the SB.
Looking at Jones’ #s and seeing him drop the admittedly hurried pass, and I’m concerned about Jones as a natural receiver outta the backfield. Also noticing the Jets ran a LOT of 2-back, with Jones the HB. Hell, I don’t even know who the FB was. You’d think the PHEEnom, Shonn Green, would be in there, but it’s still 14400 yards in ’09 Jones…
Career-long, Jones hasn’t been very productive in the passing game. Didn’t look to him much in Sanchez’s rookie year, is my impression. A respectable back, who can give you a great play-fake, but running into the teeth of the D unselfishly, but my personal preference is for a ’back who is a more convincing threat as a receiver.
Please tell me I’m wrong and tell me how great Jones is without the ball and how he can catch it on the run…
