Shaun Smith Says He Signed With The Chiefs

Free agent NT Shaun Smith has announced to his Twitter followers that he's the newest member of the Kansas City Chiefs.

It's a officiical am a Kansas city chief

The Chiefs aren't confirming the news but judging by his tweet, I would expect an announcement at some point.

We'll let you know if/when it's official.

Smith worked out for the Chiefs back in October and obviously didn't sign. However, with the hiring of Romeo Crennel might have brought upon a renewed interest in Smith, who had the best season of his career under Crennel in 2007.

Didn't we look at him last year?

He very well may be worse than what we had. Although, this is all Crennel at this point, so you gotta believe he knows him.

I like this signing

I have a pretty low tolerance for problem players, but as long as he behaves himself I’m all for giving him another chance, and we obviously need the help at NT. That being said, I hope Pioli has him on a very short leash.

by MtHammer on Mar 10, 2010 11:38 AM CST reply actions

8 teams in 7 years...he'll have to prove himself, I think...

…still, never hurts to have some depth, or a player with something to prove. Best of luck to him.

My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:

1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.

I disagree

Craig can have his own opinion on the signing.

I like it, and think that Crennel knows the guy better than anyone.

I'm also not doing cartwheels

Not that I ever have…

I think he’s a role player, at a position of need.

I also think his contract is probably small, and if he gets out of line, he’ll be on the street.

like I've said before...

If anyone can get this guy to keep his act clean and perform at the best of his ability, it’s Crennel.

If he could run block he wouldn't be looking for a job

No? I know Indy had the worst running game in the league…having Peyton probably doesn’t help but there has to be a reason he was cut…and I don’t believe it was the small bonus he was going to recieve.

3 mil base salary for this year

On top of his bonus that was guaranteed.

Look, Pollian threw his OL under the bus after they couldn’t get 1 yard on 3rd and 1…when they got conservative. Looks like Lilja’s taking the fall.

Even though, I’m almost sure that run was to the right side, and the Saints were loaded up for it…but whatever.

Bring him in.

He was due a bonus, and they paid it before cutting him.

From the Indianapolis Star:

The move apparently wasn’t financially driven. The team paid Lilja the $1.7 million roster bonus he was due before terminating his contract. He would have earned a base salary of $3.055 million in 2010.

Oh, and the KC Star thinks he’s one of the Right 53.

He's probably

had more than enough time to reflect on his actions. I want someone on our defense to have a mean streak. He’s just gotta know when to fight (4th and 1) and when to be cool.

If Crennel wants him in KC, then there is obviously something about him talent/potential wise. That alone is good enough for me.

And when Lilja still isn't signed next week ...

… he’s going to start re-evaluating how much he’s actually worth.

If he had any other value to other teams, the Colts would’ve traded him rather than just cutting him. The fact that he’s been on the market for three days now and there aren’t even rumors of him visiting anywhere ought to have him starting to re-think his market value already.

Great move

Height: 6-2 Weight: 325 Age: 28

Prototypical size for a 3-4 NT. Considering his age he still could improve. Familiar with the defensive schemes that will be run. Worst case we at least have a true NT to rotate, best case… he performs up to his 2007 level.

The Flower?

Been hanging out with Shaun Smith?

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

Browns reunion?? lol

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports via Twitter the Browns have discussed dealing QB Brady Quinn with other teams.

Smith is an upgrade over Edwards...

and Lilja would be an upgrade to anything else we have on the OL. I hope we get him and he blooms in the zone blocking scheme…

There's no hope with dope...

Competition is good and LJ to the Raiders, would be even better!

Smith may not make it to final roster but competition is good. LJ in Black and Silver would be awesome, get to crush him 2 times a year!

I dont know about this guy....

Smith, who’s known for trash-talking his teammates during the week to keep things interesting, has had at least one other confrontation with a teammate this season. Apparently, not everyone takes his ribbing in good fun. Earlier this season, he verbally sparred with an offensive lineman and the player had to be held back.

“Guys get heated at practice,” said Crennel at the time. “There were no fights or anything at practice. He’s a defensive lineman, he’s going against an offensive lineman, so sometimes guys get heated. There was no fight involved, there was some discussion involved, but no fight.”

According to a source close to the team, Smith started jawing at Quinn and Quinn shot back and incited Smith. Smith then punched him in the face, according to Donovan’s report

Crennel knows...

That’s what matters.

Also, I’m sure he’s cheap, and if he gets out of line, he’ll be on the street.

thanks for the synopsis

but really…who cares?

It was 2 years ago correct?

I had words all the time with linemen and linebackers in HS and College. It’s normal…I agree with Crennel. Happens all the time.

yeah...it doesn't bother me, we had some fights here in kc during the vermeil era

is what it is. I don’t think its a big deal, its all about how he is NOW…

plus, we can cut the guy at any time with no real damage done.

No one seems to listen...

EVERY team has multiple fights/scuffles EVERY training camp.

If you’ve ever been to camp, you see it.

by kcsno56 on Mar 10, 2010 12:35 PM CST up reply actions

NOTHING wrong with that,

He can talk all the shit he wants to other teams during gametime. Maybe it will distract the opponents line, hell maybe the other team gets so pissed it causes penalties. That would be glorious

Remember Neil Smith with the shutter move

He would draw people offsides all the time. I don’t know why defenses don’t do that more.

the only reason this got any publicity is Brady – AJ Hawk is Banging my Sister – Quin.

TWITTER!

Reporting on Twitter feeds will eventually backfire. I have no reason to believe this ISN’T the real Shaun Smith and I’m 99.9% sure this is legit…BUT…how do we know for sure? He’s not a guy who people would impersonate, but eventually this will bite reporters who use Twitter as truth.

I’m just waiting for someone to hack into Schefter’s twitter and say something completely crazy, only to then see who runs with the reports. If not hit by a hacker, I hope Shefter sends out a drunk tweet to f with people sometime.

You must not be looking at the right page, man.

His Twitter accoun is ‘protected’ but not down. That means that only the people he allows to read it can do so. Lots of minor celebrities do that.

His homepage — shaunsmith91.com — is also still up.

I think he’s had one too many celebratory drinks.

“No ociffer. I have not been drinking.”

Depth

We continue to build our overall strength. He is not THE answer, but he is quality, experienced depth. In a 3-4, if you don’t have that at NT, you are dead meat. Now, we are at least live meat. I like his attitude and passion. You have to have that in that spot.

Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

decent stats and upside

“Smith’s best statistical season came in 2007, his first year with Crennel, when Smith posted 48 tackles, 14 assists, two sacks and a forced fumble, appearing in 15 games with 11 starts, all career highs.” just 3 yrs removed from that season and only 28. gotta say we have a diamond in the rough. Strange that this dude was on so many teams in such a short period of time. Mental case? olyl a 1 yr deal though so cant hurt
