Chiefs Continue Interest In Shaun Smith

Last week we reported the Chiefs were showing serious interest in free agent nose tackle Shaun Smith.

Since then, Arrowhead Pride commenters (led by JacinB) noticed his Twitter account had a Chiefs logo on it.

According to his tweets, he took a physical yesterday.

He was with the Bengals last season but they didn't offer him a tender as a restricted free agent. He had his best season in the NFL so far under Romeo Crennel in 2007.

The Chiefs definitely need depth at the nose tackle position. Currently, Ron Edwards is the starter but his age isn't exactly ideal for a nose tackle of the future. In addition to that, finding a nose tackle that's ready to play right away is about as difficult as finding a quarterback that's ready to play right away.

Smith, 27 28, was an undrafted free agent out of the school that Kent Babb built University of South Carolina.

Smith is listed at 6'2", 320 pounds.

I was surprised we didn't end up signing this guy last season.

We brought him in, and then nothing seemed to transpire despite an obvious need at NT. I say bring the guy on board, baggage or not. It’s a low risk signing and Crennel likes him, so maybe he can get his head right.

if he comes with baggage

he will either put it aside and play for us, or he will get cut and be without a job. All these guys with the baggage label we can give them a try, because im confident that they will be right back on the street if they try any of that crap here in KC.

Not a big fan of his conduct.... if it is true and it seems to be.

That said we need help in that department BAD and though I would rather draft a NT or get Wilfork (which aint happening).

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

bonus points. You want your NT with some fight in him. With that attitude that he isn’t going to take crap from some punk kid.

The first 3 picks of the draft will be defense. Pioli loves him some defense.

The trenches in the NFL aren't for polite gentleman

There’s eye gouging, finger bending, and kidney shots. You don’t want a player that gets under there and says oops sorry didn’t mean to bump into you.

There is physical toughness and then there is stomping on someone's head or...

Yes and Shaun Smith did none of the above.

His QB probably got in his face and ran his mouth so Shaun Smith punched him. These players are men. Men don’t let a man step in their face and run their mouth without getting hit the mouth.

I agree with this

But Blount obviously lost it.

If he’d have just thrown the punch, and then got pushed back by his teammates and went to the locker room, I could more easily let it go.

It’s one thing to snap, and throw a punch when provoked, it’s something else to carry on for a few minutes even going into the crowd.

if Blount would have stopped there

then he went on a spree trying to punch everyone and fans included. That was a little out of hand, but comparing Smith to Blount is a reach.

It's hard to say because I wasn't in that situation

However, I’ve been in fights before, and once you get going and your adrenaline kicks in, it can be hard to think rationally. All you know is you want to beat that dudes ass, and all of these people are stopping you from reaching your goal, so they become roadblocks you need to get out of the way.

Again, if that dude from Boise State doesn’t say a damn thing, none of that happens. I think Blount was unfairly punished and whoever drafts him is going to get a gem of a running back. That dude is going to have a chip on his shoulder for his entire NFL career and he’s going to make people pay.

do you want to write off all those players involved? That would include Brandon Merriweather, Greg Olson, Jon Beaston, and Kenny Phillips.

I don’t judge players by what they do in one game because, you know, I think rationally. If I thought otherwise Priest would be dead to me since he got caught from behind and fumbled in the playoffs, lossing the game for us.

Not the incidents, the idea of judging ANY player by what they do in one game.

I’ve used the DT example numerous times, he lost his mind and flipped shit. Doesn’t make him a bad guy. You can’t judge people by what they do in one game. No one wrote off Lawrence Phillips after his first incident, it wasn’t until they started adding up. Blount has been nothing but a model citizen since the Boise game.

Yes I remember the DT examples.

Blount lost his mind and I don’t want him on the team I root for. Period. That’s my opinion. If the draft him it doesn’t mean I will abandon the Chiefs. I'm curious BigRed:

How long have you been following football? Remember the brawls that used to break out between the Chiefs and Riders?

Again, I reiterate that this is a testosterone driven sport. Alpha males are going to scuffle every now and then. I get that your argument is that Blount went ballistic and had to be restrained against other team mates and fans, but shit happens.

I’m not about to disregard what looks to be a good player just because of one incident. One time is a mistake, twice is a pattern. There would be a lot of players out of the NFL if at least one second chance wasn’t given.

OK,

So after reading comments I see that he punched Brady Quinn. So what? This is a testosterone driven sport and locker room altercations are likely to break out every now and then, especially between offensive and defensive players.

In high school I played RDE and got into a little scuffle with our RB after practice one day. There was a lot of trash talking and it escalated into a couple of punches being throw, no one was seriously hurt, and after all was said and done we got over it and were kinda sorta friends.

This kind of stuff happens more often than you might think. Bernard Pollard was on several offensive players’ hit list in training camp last year. WR Steve Smith punched CB Ken Lucas not too long ago. These things happen, I’m not saying they’re right, but it kind of comes with the territory.

When I got to work this morning I was bragging to a co-worker about how excited I am for the Chiefs this year.

He’s a Steeler fan and for the last couple of years he’s really got to take some shots at me and the Chiefs. He’s not so quick to slam them now. We’re a team that is undoubtedly on the uprise, and the Steelers are declining… and having QB issues.

It took a night for it to settle in, but I finally realized we SERIOUSLY might have the best backfield in 2010. Say what you want about Cassel, but that is a hungry guy. He’s working his ass off right now, and is obviously determined to come out slingin’ in 2010. Crennel… Weis… Haley… yeah. And we haven’t even drafted anyone yet. I’m ready. I don’t think I’ve been this excited about the Chiefs upcoming season in…. ever.
