Possible trade partners this offseason (Players edition)

It seems there isn't a good place to discuss trades for this draft. Who could we trade DJ to? What teams would be interested in obtaining Dorsey or Bowe from us? And for those of you saying there's no way that Pioli would trade away a "key" player for picks then you should examine his patriots history where he routinely let players walk rather than handcuff the team with a huge contract. So i would like to break down possible partners for players that other teams are rumored to want as well as possible people willing to trade for our 1st rounder.

Star-divide

Derrick Johnson:  There are many teams in need of a good linebacker and Derrick Johnson has shown he is great as a cover LB. Normally that isn't an every down player in a 3-4 however in a 4-3 there is a position for Johnson. He fits best as a will linebacker in a 4-3 although he is a serviceable linebacker as the "cover" ilb.

Johnson's value in a trade: DJ has had years to show he is an elite LB and he simply has not lived up to it. He is a roleplaying linebacker and is most valued in a 4-3. His value to a 4-3 team would be a possible second rounder while i think a 3-4 team might be willing to give up a third rounder for him.

Teams that need a player for this position include: Jacksonville, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Houston, and Detroit.

Glenn Dorsey: Dorsey is a player that i do not want traded but if Suh slides to us or if a player they think is very capable of manning that side of the line is available in the early second Dorsey could be on his way to another city. Dorsey is a rare talent at 4-3 DT but has shown flexibility to play 3-4 DE very well.

Dorsey's value in a trade: Glenn has shown improvement and still has his quick first step. He is stronger than he was in college and has 2 years of experience in the NFL. Teams know that it takes a few years of experience against professional lineman before tackles really get it. I believe his value is probably late first to early second.

Possible trade partners that could use Dorsey: Detroit, Tampa Bay, New Orleans, Minnesota, Seattle, New York (Giants).

Dwayne Bowe:  Bowe had a down year this year but still holds value as a promising WR. He needs a QB with time to throw to him as he doesn't have elite speed to get open quickly. Had two of the most productive seasons for a Rookie / Second year WR.

Bowe's  value in a trade: He is young and showed great promise in his first 2 years before struggling this year in a new system and without Tony Gonzalez pulling double teams. I believe his value has dropped to an early second at most.

Teams that need a player like Bowe include: Cincinatti, Tampa Bay, Seattle, Jacksonville, Miami, Buffalo, Baltimore. St Louis.

Also i'd like to know what players if any you all find interesting enough for the Chiefs to trade for? I know it's been a while since people have  unrealistically said 2nd rounder for Wilfork but there are players out there that could be had for a 3rd rounder or possibly a future pick.

OJ Otagwe and Kirk Morrison

I think you can get Otagwe for a 5th and Morrison has a 3rd round tender but might be had for a high 4th.

I would be happy with either player for that value (or both)

I want to build through the draft but adding these 2 players for a 4th and 5th would be an immediate upgrade and 4th and 5th round picks are not expecting to contribute for a year or so (if at all)

Trading DJ..

would be an option I’d look into but trading Dorsey or D. Bowe away to me is just foolish. Dorsey is coming along as a 3-4 DE and Bowe has soooo much potential to be a great receiver why get rid of him? Look at all the good players we’ve drafted over the years who went on to other teams and broke out to become really good (i.e. Joe Horn, Donnie Edwards, Scott Fujita just to name a few.) I say develop Bowe and Dorsey and if we can get a good deal on DJ then trade him if not then let him stay and see if he can live up to the hype.

AGREE 100 percent

I think Bowe will have a great year this year.
The Dorsey situation is difficult as he would be a better fit in a 4-3 but he played very well (against the run at least see the results when he did not play CLE…) but I do think that it wont help us this year but if someone like NO or INDY or another late 1st round is offered it would be hard to pass up. We drafte Magee and we could find another 3-4 end this year (much better 3-4 DE class) and the pick we traded Dorsey for could be used on a NT, OT, OG, OC, etc….

I just dont like trading good players BUT if the right deal comes along it would be worth considering how deep this draft is. Would be a great trade for NO and us as long as we replaced a starter with another starter (probably another position)

I don’t expect anyone to get traded (bowe, dj, or dorsey i mean). DJs value would be low in my opinion and unless someone offered a 2nd it just would not be worth trading him and giving him yet another shot with Romeo.

My biggest concern with letting DJ go

Is our LB depth is pretty dismal. I like the motor Belcher has shown but beyond that we have special teamers at ILB. If we move DJ I think ILB has to be taken in the first round.

DJ and our 1st to JAX for their 1st and 2nd. We drop to 10 and still pick up McClain. then we have 3 2nd rounders. Worse case we pick up the number 2 LB or and can address

The Chiefs will take a defensive player with 3 out of their first 4 picks in 2010

thats the type of trade i see happening...

with no cap i see the draft day being crazy for all teams using players to move up and down the draft.

I could see something similar with Tampa at 3 (if Suh is available) or CLE if they want a QB.

I hope we move back to 7 with CLE and pickup NT Rogers but i am dreaming.

Hell....

JAX doesn’t have a 2nd rounder

This seems like a good place to ask this question.

I just had a thought, as I follow two teams (Chiefs of course are my first love). The Chiefs and the Rams have a similar problem. They both have high draft pick DL playing in the wrong scheme for their talents.

Would you guys have any interest in seeing a swap of Glenn Dorsey to St. Louis for Adam Carriker?

Carriker is truly a 3-4 DE. He doesn’t seem to have the skill set to be a successful 3-technique or 4-3 NT. He is a big guy with a high motor, but he seems to be out of place in Spags’ defense.

Dorsey is built for the 3-technique in a 4-3, and he clearly has an issue succeeding as a dominant 3-4 DE. Maybe that gets better by getting a big, sloppy NT to get some of the double-teams off of him; but that’s still a gamble, too.

I think both teams win in this trade if Carriker stays healthy. I’m curious to hear what you guys think.

etp ... sounds like a plan to me ... but here's the thing ...

it sounds TOO logical, TOO good … which in the NFL of today means it will likely never happen

but I do think you should send email to both Pioli and the StL GM and let them know of the idea, and tell them it has My seal of approval

Well, ...

Scott, Billy, and I are all pretty close; but I’m not sure either will take my suggestion. I’ll probably have to drop your name and seal of approval to have any chance of being heard. I don’t see either side making the deal, either. It could help that neither GM or scouting department was involved in the selections. It just seems like the right move for both teams.

Plus, the Rams could then draft Bradford with a clear conscience, and Berry would drop to us. This could be perfect!

this idea

intreges me. ive always been a dorsey fan and i wouldnt WANT to trade him but as upamin said. it is logical. too logical yes but still.

The poll results are close to what i expected

Although i expected there to be more Bowe trade ideas then Dorsey trade ideas… I guess people are more hung up on that Vermeil offense still.

The first 3 picks of the draft will be defense. Pioli loves him some defense.

by ChiefsfanJon on Mar 10, 2010 9:44 AM CST reply actions

I don't think

It is people being hung up with a different offense more than the fact that we have what should be a pretty good, young receiver that has shown he has potential to be great. I personally would hate to see the Chiefs give up on a 4th year WR when our 2nd WR has only a couple years left and no other serious wide-out talent.

I don't see DJ netting draft pick that high

Especially when teams seem to be hoarding draft picks these days. For comparison Jonathan Vilma was dealt for a conditional 4th round pick (turned into a 3rd round pick). I think Vilma is way better than DJ.

well

i couldnt disagree more. we already have a huge lack of talent and trading first round talent(even if they arent playing like it) when they are still under contract and no “Handcuff contract” is in order just doesnt make sense. yes i know. this is the deepest draft in years. yada yada yada. its still going to have a 95% miss rate. no, DJ hasnt wowed us but no one is going to give us a 3rd for him for just that reason. has dorsey been all world? no thats because hes a dlineman and it takes a few years. Dbowe? yeah he had problems with his hands. but hey guess what other chief all time great who we recently traded for a 2nd round draft pick???? yeah TG had the drops his 2nd and 3rd year. so no im not for any of this trades. add more talent with the picks we have. pick up a few more good value free agents. and wait. its not like we just recently declined. its been 3 horrid years and its going to take time. relax and enjoy the time. they pay all the brass enough money to worry about it.

by Hendrix on Mar 10, 2010 12:39 PM CST reply actions

if....

you want more picks then trade back. even if its not in the first. trade back in the second for a couple 4-5ths. trade back in the 3rd for a 5 or 6th. there are many ways to get more picks. and this is a deep draft right????

by Hendrix on Mar 10, 2010 12:41 PM CST up reply actions

who are you disagreeing with

i was just presenting possible trades not saying i want to do them.

The first 3 picks of the draft will be defense. Pioli loves him some defense.
