Defense: Player Expectations and Improvements.
Alright sorry for the delay, been busy and with Free Agency and all that news it's been busy. So here is part 2 of Player Expectations and Improvements. This time we look at the defense. Here's the offense if you want to look at it
http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2010/2/25/1325347/offense-player-expectations-and (ok it's not working when I preview it but that's the link. that or just look at my profile)
Again, I'll try to stay away from draft ideas and etc.. Defense after the jump.
First off, DL
DL
Improvements
With Glenn Dorsery having to transiton to 3-4 DE from 4-3 DT was going to be a challenge. I will say from looking at his numbers he put up pretty solid and good numbers to be one of the best statistically. Tyson Jackson the rookie didn't have the greatest year but it's hard to make an impact right away so look for vast improvement with a true NT at the helm next season and better play by TJ. NT not much here, a fill in pretty much with Edwards, will fill in from draft most likely.
Expectations
All around more solid and better play, specifically from Jackson and new NT. Dorsey will be good, if not great and have improvements in the game and with his stats. Should be an exciting line to watch. Could be the best in the NFL in a few short years.
LBs (Just gonna clump them all here)
Improvements
Our LB had a vast improvement thanks to a horrid LB corps the year before. The addition of Vrabel was nice and good to have him back. DJ had his moments and stepped up in week 17. Now he needs it all 16 games. Williams was a nice option and didnt play to bad. Tamba Hali had an oustanding year and improved his personal best for sacks in a season.
Expectations
I think the biggest excitement could come from Hali. With new and better coaching a should be new and better DL in front of him and a better LB corps with him he should become even more of a monster. He will be a terror for opposing teams. They will be looking to stop him and center around him. (Imagine if we still had Jared Allen) Vrabel will continue to mentor the young and should see another improvement from them all and step their games up.
CBs
Improvements
Brandon Flowers had a sensational year and is looking to put his name atop some of the best the league has to offer. During the latter part of the season teams start to throw away from him more. That in turn, exploited Carr a little more, while I don't think he's as bad as the Denver game showed I think with coaching he will improve.
Expectations
Flowers should improve as more teams struggle to throw near Flowers in fear. Carr's game hopefully will be vastly improved and will show that the Denver game was a fluke. Some coaching and Carr will be just fine and play well along with safety help.
Safeties
Improvements
Well we didn't have a great safety group last year with Mike Brown allowing a few too many big blown plays that cost us possibly a few games. Especially the Dallas game. Page played solid and did his best and showed better play than Brown.
Expectations
Here's my one draft talk. Hoping we take Eric Berry the safeties will have improved vastly with Flowers and Berry locking down and shutting out half the field we should see a much improved safety group and look for more picks from the secondary as a whole.
P
Improvements
Dustin Colquitt had one of the best seasons by a punter and had one of his best. He was near to breaking a record, but missed by one (punts downed inside 20?) but the Chiefs finally had to have a good game where they hardly punted, but rather scored.
Expectations
Well Colquitt will continue only to get better and I'd say break records, but I don't want to have to punt a lot. But either case whenever he is called upon he will only continue to be more golden. I'm just excited and proud to know we have probably the best K/P combo in the NFL. So I know we can always look to the kicking/punting game whenever needed and won't have to fear about anything.

As far as impact player / improved I think it will be Brandon Flowers.
He’s shown so much and played well this year I think he will continue to not only get better but put fear in the opposing QB’s. They’ll start to throw away from him he becomes a force to be reckoned with.

Depends on the size and speed of the opposing WR.
Flowers is still a liability against the WRs who are both big and fast. No match for Austin or Vincent Jackson, for instance. I see him 1-on-1 against either of these guys and he’s my #1 target.
Last year, I’d almost rather have seen McGraw or Brown just come up and try to muscle these guys at the line and leave Brandon a few yards back to read and jump the route.
Against anyone under 200 lbs, Flowers was pretty much able to re-direct routes at will, and handle 1-on-1 duties.
i think glenn dorsey will go to pro bowl this year....
look for him to get 60+ tackles and earn the trip to Hawaii…
I voted DJ
I seriously think that DJ on defense and Bowe on offense are being pushed and beaten down by the coaches for ONE reason…
they are among the most talented guys on the roster… they SHOULD play at a very high level in 2010
I believe that both can
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB
Defense
I think, or at least hoping, defense will be improved more than we think with the new coaching and Crennel working them harder than they’ve ever worked before. Along with Haley’s conditioning. I think we are in for bit of a surprise.
I was torn between Hali and Flowers. I went with Flowers because his impact can be more noticeable and will be recognized more since Hali will have an improved DL and such.

Id change my Vote to DJ if......
……we put an ILB next to him that can stay home and play the run gaps and rush the passer. That would let DJ do what he does best (spy the QB and pick the ball off in underneath coverage).
However, if we don’t get Williams (he that give up 7 yards per run before making the tackle) or Mays (he who overpursues everything and is out of position) off the field at ILB then DJ is going to spend just as much time on the bench in 2010 as he did in 2009.

I can see KC achieving that indirectly, by drafting a rush LB and moving Vrabel to ILB.
I just really think Vrabel could get a couple more EXCELLENT seasons as the field general in the middle of that D, going where he thinks he needs to go, rather than being tied up in the trash all the time on the strong side. I also think Vrabel can disguise his intentions pre-snap and still get where he wants to go without hesitation after the snap.
I know what you’re sayin’ about Mays, but I felt there were enough structural weaknesses up front to cut the kid some slack. He’s just a sentimental favorite of mine.
Voted for Tjax
can’t get much worse…jk
I think with a true NT and Dorsey/Hali on the other side, the Oline could try to shift more to the left side, allowing Tjax more opportunities
haha i voted for him too
and its true its because he couldnt get much worse. he can only get better from here on out hes got another year under his belt and better coaching around him. and i think hali and flowers would be our big time players.. they already are
You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.

Cassel can lead us.
I saw rookie Neal Smith in Liberty.
He looked soft. His 2nd year in Liberty he looked awesome. If a rookie works in the off season, that 2nd year they come back ready. At least the good ones do.
To my eye, Jackson looked like a Man-Child on a crap team, last year.
He didn’t look soft. Maybe relatively untutored, but not soft.
Tjax vote here
I think he’s had his year of hard knocks and he will see how much he was pushed around after looking at the film from this past season.
Pioli chose to use his first pick of his new dynasty (and yes I believe in my Chiefs becoming a dynasty) for a reason. The kid has tremendous upside, and he is a football player at heart. He will be a freak with an offseason of working out and practicing at an NFL level. I believe he will surprise us all after Crennel coaches him up.
2nd place would have to go to Brandon Carr with the coaching he will receive as well. He is a baller, but he could never get his head around this year (something that hindered me as a football player in the secondary). If he has added help over the top, I expect him to be able to do great things next year…
I think a more aggressive scheme, involving more focus on INSIDE leverage from Carr, will pay dividends.
He does seem to me to have the tools to jam, direct the receiver to the edge, and still be in position down the field on the go route, with enough speed and size to make that a very low-percentage pass. The KC philosophy in years past was to channel your guy to the inside help ’most all day long, and, as often as not, LET them catch the ball in front of you, if they can (and they usually could).
I think the main thing he could’ve used in ’09 was a stopwatch in his head that he could rely upon, based on a consistent pass rush.
As much as I want to vote for DJ
He hasn’t given me any reason to think that he will push his game to the next level in one offseason after 5 seasons of mediocrity.
So Hali gets my vote, as he seems to be the hardest worker of the bunch. I can only assume he’s putting some extra time into exploding off the line, and working on his technique and leverage, Gracie style. With teams and the media sort of spotlighting his play a little last season, he’s got a few more eyes on him. I expect the officiating crews to keep a closer watch on him as well, and a lot of those non-holding calls become penalties in our favor. Which then become sacks.

man i couldn't vote!
your poll ask two different questions; most improved and best player will likely be two different guys.
so, most improved: tyson jackson, he’s got the ability, but he just looked lost, and he can’t get a whole lot worse
big time player: Hali, i think he’s gonna have a monster year as long as the line improves; i predict at least 12.5 sacks and twice as many FF, probably more like 15 though
