Ranking our Receiving Corps!
In the modern era of the NFL, we typically see 3 Receiver sets. Ideally, this combination will hope to produce, (sometimes individually - but often collectively) a:
1) Vertical Threat (speedster) - someone who can stretch the field; although aging, Chambers has shown flashes.
2) Leaper - a player who can go up and catch the ball at 'its highest point'; in the corner of the End Zone, perhaps. We've seen that at times with DBowe, but he definitely needs more consistency to fit that bill.
3) Possession (slot guy) who can make the tough catch over the middle and help move the sticks. Is Bobby Wade really our best at this? I'm not convinced.
We all know how many balls were dropped and how many receivers Pioli/Haley brought in to try to shore things up. In addition to listing who you think our most valuable receiver is, what are your comments as to the changes you think we should make to improve this vital part of our team?
My recommendation - Golden Tate! He can be that slot guy and help in the Vertical game.

Why do people like Bowe
so much? He has not proven he can catch the ball thrown directly into his hands!

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
i think he has
because its been provin the chiefs have had close to the most dropped balls of ALL TIME. and in order for it to be dropped it had to of been thrown in their hands
You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.

Cassel can lead us.
wasn't it Lou Holtz who said, "If you can touch it you can catch it"?

Cause
He proved he can catch it well… rookie season. Why it had to be his first year I dunno… but he has the abilitiy, dunno why he has been slackin
Nothing wrong with his mechanics. Been a lot of problems with getting good separation by the time the ball comes out.
Yes, he’s had a lotta drops, but what’s been more alarming to me is how often he is or is not creating situations where the pass is relatively uncontested. To a great extent he’s getting a lot more attention from defenses. But to me, the weakest part of his game is explosion withOUT the ball, and his ability to get OPEN.
I think he was more explosive after the suspension, and it was harder for DBs to tie him up off the snap than it was before the suspension. Add to that the likelihood that Cassel will be getting more time and better looks, and D-Bowe ought to be on the ascendant in ’10. Let them, just ONCE, establish some kind of rhythm, and I think the drops evaporate.
I have to pick Bowe
Because we all have to hope he turns out to be a great WR. I hope he can get it together this year, and prove he was worth us drafting him. He will have more time working with Cassel, and hopefully working on his route running, which should help.
I would like to point out the fact that Cassel not wanting to take chance’s with the ball, has IMO hurt Bowe in the long run, but Bowe also needs to realize that running good route’s will get him open and Cassel will throw it his way more. IMO Bowe is a go get it type of WR, and in his mind he thinks he’s open every play, but Cassel is not the type of QB that will just throw the ball up and hope his guys comes down with it.
Young Receivers
Bowe is still a very young receiver….The number he has put up in his first three years doesn’t happen very often for a receiver. Especially a receiver who was suspended 4 games and had a revolving door at the QB position. Bowe has put up these numbers with Huard, Croyle, Thigpen, and Cassel.

agreed
some of the best WR in the NFL have had plenty of drops.
the fact is, Bowe IS a productive NFL WR… and he has made some spectacular and clutch catches for this team.
just because he’s dropped a few, shouldn’t discount the plays he has made
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB
Yeah. I think possession receiver is pretty much covered.
And I think the rest of the crew is going to be better, just by improving the pass protections. I wouldn’t sell Lance Long short, just yet. And I fully expect to see more outta Lawrence. Give Cassel an extra beat, and having Lawrence there who WILL leave you behind if he gets even with ya, and this team starts looking a lot more dangerous on offense. I think we were JUST starting to see that, towards the end of the season, when the play-fake started workin’, off Jamaal’s success.
The margin of success/failure is very small in the NFL, even between the best and the worst.
That all being said, if Tate is available in the 2nd round, it could be a tossup between him and quite a few high-value picks.
This Terrence Cooper you speak of....
who does he play for.
Yeah...but we beat the donkeys like a rented mule.
Oh never mind.

jacoby ford… faster and should be a middle round pick… your starting slot guy in the 4th or 5th… sounds like a value pick to me…

Ford was an All-American track star
Kind of like Jamaal Charles. I have been pushing for Ford in the 4th or 5th for some time now.
My only concern about Ford is
He his a smaller guy; and Haley is big on all his WRs being aggressive blockers.
by chiefsfan62 on Mar 2, 2010 12:13 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
He is small, but that doesn't mean you can't be a good blocker
Chambers is 5’11" and is a pretty good blocker, Steve Smith is 5’9" and is a good blocker. Now, I’m not saying Ford is a good blocker or a bad one either (haven’t seen enough tape to judge), but he doesn’t have to be huge to be a good blocking WR.
Good point...
Ford also has special teams upside. We all know how Pioli/Hali loves players with multiple skills.
by chiefsfan62 on Mar 2, 2010 8:21 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
For sheer physical talent, no one on the team is better than Bowe, he just can't catch (yeah, just a small problem)
Chambers it experienced and can still generate big plays. The rest of the WRs are average to bad. Long and Lawrence have potential to be good and Terrance Copper is the best special we have teamer
What the world needs is more geniuses with humility, there are so few of us left.
*special teamer we have*

Long
I’m always afraid he is going to get killed when I see him on the field. I almost feel like a mother watching her son play.
by groundedchevy on Mar 2, 2010 1:17 PM CST up reply actions
How I'd rate those guys
Bowe – okay starter
Chambers – okay starter
Wade – get off my team
Copper – good at ST, shouldn’t see the field at WR
Lawrence – project 5th WR
Long – good story, nice guy, get off my team
So we have two okay starters (assuming we resign Chambers), a special teamer, a project 5th WR, and two guys that shouldn’t make the roster. We need at least one addition that can walk in and contribute day one, if not two.
Feeling "The Love" and "Drinking the Kool AId"
Agreed porkchop
Bowe and Chambers are both good #2 WRs, but neither has shown they can carry the load as a #1 target. With that being said, I think we can get by with them t as long as we build a great O-Line so we can get a consistent running attack.
Slot receiver is really the most pressing need at the skill positions, IMO. Focus on defense and O-Line in the Draft. If we get a shot at a good slot guy that can also return kicks (e.g. Golden Tate, Mardy Gilyard, Jordan Shipley, Demaryius Williams, Jacoby Ford, etc.) in rounds 2-5…we take him.
Seriously?
Where have you guys been? We had the worst receiver corps in the NFL last year. It’s time to either fire the receiving coach (hope it’s not still Haley) or wipe the slate clean and get some people in here who can catch!

There is still hope for Bowe...
He does make some amazing catches, but of course drops some really easy ones. Either way he’s not the next great WR but he does have talent….Chambers didn’t drop the ball all that often but he did drop one and basically lost the game (Cleveland?) But that’s basically it. The rest is a crapshoot.
Neither Bowe or Chambers are legit #1 recievers, but they would be good #2 and #3’s, provided Bowe holds on to the ball this year.

Thats why i say
We should make every effort to get Boldin, he is a #1 WR. Boldin, Bowe, and a player we draft, just not Tate. Why you ask………..I just think we can get someone later on in this years draft for the Slot spot on the roster.
@Gifted
Our receivers were playing much better towards the end of the year. DBo was really progressing, then he got hit with the 4 game suspension and never quite regained the momentum at the end of the season.
When we had both Bowe and Chambers on the field, we got some stuff done. Yes, there was plenty of room for improvement, but I think a slot/possession guy is our biggest need, and we can find that in rounds 2-5 easily.
Right now we don’t have anyone to go to when it is 3rd and long in critical situations. That is a problem. For years we were spoiled with Tony Gonzalez, but now we don’t have that luxury. Luckily, this draft is deep at WR, particularly slot guys that can also return kicks and punts, allowing us to kill the proverbial two birds with one stone. Hopefully Pioli gets it done.
I thought they were playing better towards the end, also.
And it looked like D-Bo was gettin’ off the jam better than in the earlier part of the season.
I got the firm sense that Haley and Pioli knew what they were about with respect to WR position. Don’t think they’re DONE, there, yet, but for the first time since 4ever, I started feeling confident that the organization was capable of developing talent and getting players on the field.
And I’ll go back to the well yet AGAIN on how, except for Vermeil, who went out and got it done in FA, Chiefs were unable to secure the tackle positions on offense, and so it was next-to-impossible to develop the WRs they DID draft.
I also agree with porkchop (& nick)
only I personally think that our WR situation is a bigger need than OL. But ya, we def need that ‘go to’ slot guy now! It will also help Bowe and Chambers’ production.
by chiefsfan62 on Mar 2, 2010 8:34 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
i know we love all of our guys
but i think we have one of the worst receiving corps in the league id rank bowe as good as braylon edwards if he can learn to catch then he would be pretty dynamic. Chambers is good but i’m afraid he’ll start to drop off because it seems like thats what he did on the chargers. bobby wade news a new job copper is a pretty big special teams player but thats it. lance long i love his story and im sure he’ll have great stories to tell his kids and grand kids. but if he wants to stay on the roster and not practice squad he’ll need to step his game up.

Cassel can lead us.
We must face the fact that
Dwayne Bowe has all the potential in the world but he has not been pushed to achievement. Bowe was a great receiver on a very bad team. He didn’t even have to try in order to hold his number one spot and it went to his head. Thus we got the little ‘celebratory’ dances in camp last year when he made a single catch that got his arse BBQ’d by Haley. Let’s hope that Dwayne has grown up some with the addition of Chambers and the new coaching staff. I have a feeling that the new crew will be just as unforgiving of that kind of silliness as Haley was last year. Dwayne is like many talented players, he needs to be pushed into becoming a complete player. He needs to be given examples of how he can be better or he will never get better. I have a feeling that Dwayne may play with a bit of a chip on his shoulder come September. He won’t like Chris Chambers being called the CHiefs #1.
Absolutely...
Hopefully, the Chiefs listing Chris Chambers as WR1 – will be a motivational factor for Bowe!
I never got the sense that D-Bowe was a head case. More of a case of not knowing any better. He was a reflection of the
previous coaching staff, as were numerous other players. Bowe said and did mostly all the things that said to me he ain’t a “ME-ME-ME” player. He just didn’t know any better, because of team culture. Haley and he locked horns, but it was pretty one-sided, with the coach being frank about expectations and the player rollin’ with it, like the man he is.
im sorry, but bowes celebrations and antics are nothing like ray lewis’s celebrations… and no one even bats an eye at that… some players use their celebrations to hype themselves up, give themselves confidence, or whatever… personally i think haley made a big mistake by trying to tone down bowe… and that lead to his horrid season last year… bowe was already prone to mental catching mistakes… that only made it worse…

Well, I guess if that is how Bowe rolls
we should consider trading him because that is how Haley rolls.
Also
I would not consider Ray Lewis’s antics in games the same as Bowe’s antics in practice. Besides, Ray-Ray can back it up with several years of above average performance. Bowe? So far potential outweighs practice.
