The Great Debate: Ndamukong Suh, Can He or Cant He?

, 80081e95461b8808c97d43a1c361_medium

via media.hamiltonspectator.topscms.com

Ndamukong Suh is one of the more interesting prospects in this years NFL Draft.  Since I’ve been watching football he has been the most dominating defensive lineman I have ever seen in college. Most analyst echo the same sentiments. Prior to the Big XII Championship game against Texas, I thought highly of Suh. After watching the Championship game, Suh solidified himself, in my mind, as the best player in the draft. That game alone, launched him over defensive back Eric Berry. Suh is a force on defense and on special teams. He has a tremendous motor, and his impact is felt on every down. While I believe Suh is the best player in this years draft, I am saddened that he is likely to be selected number one overall. But, there is a chance he may fall. The top 5 teams have specific needs, and if those teams decide to fill those needs with the best player available at that position, Suh may fall to the Kansas City Chiefs. With that being said, I pose two questions to you. Can Ndamukong Suh fall to the 5th pick overall? Also, if the Chiefs selected Ndamukong Suh, is he capable of playing nose tackle?

After the break, I will give my opinion on both questions.

Star-divide

1. Can Ndamukong Suh fall to the 5th pick?

While it is not likely, I believe there is a chance that Ndamukong Suh falls to the 5th pick. Once upon a time, analyst predicted DT Glenn Dorsey would be a top two selection. Well it turns out they were wrong and, he fell to the 5th pick. Teams 1-5 have big time needs, thats why they are picking that high. The St. Louis Rams are in desperate need of a quarterback. For the past three years, they have passed on the likes of Matt Ryan, Joe Flaaco, Matt Stafford, and Mark Sanchez. It was once thought that QB Mark Bulger had enough left in the tank to lead the Rams into the future, but that assessment was incorrect. He is often injured, and is a shell of his former self. The Rams also need a DT, but this draft is deep and, more DTs will be available in rounds 2-4. Selecting a DT #1 overall is a luxury that the Rams cant afford. Yes the Rams sport a poor run defense, but whats a good run defense with no one to lead your team? The Rams most select QB Sam Bradford. Attendance has been lackluster, theres been talks of moving the team, and the division is up for grabs. With the Arizona Cardinals losing so much this offseason, the Rams can make a significant jump in the wins column with the right personnel moves. Sam Bradford is the right choice, but is the smart choice.

In 2009, the Detroit Lions selected QB Matt Stafford first overall. During the 09’ season, Stafford showed great promise. He has the tangibles to right the ship that has been so wrong in Detroit for so long. In all my time of watching football, I have never witnessed such a gusty performance, like the one I saw when Stafford hurt his shoulder, and came back to throw the game winning touchdown. While Stafford gave the Detroit fan base glimmers of hope, he didn't do it for long. He was often battered and bruised by opposing defenses. The Detroit Lions need to get help on the offensive line, and protect their franchise quarterback. Again the sexy pick is Suh, or even Gerald McCoy, but the correct pick would be LT Russel Okung. When you are in the rebuilding process, there are two positions a GM should focus on, QB and LT. Quarterback, check! Left Tackle, not yet. Okung is the best player to fill their biggest need.

Tampa Bay is the key to Suh falling to the 5th pick. It has been reported that they are in love with both Suh and McCoy. Both DTs would be an excellent pick for Tampa Bay, but one player would suit their scheme best. Gerald McCoy isn't as big and strong as Ndamukong Suh, but he is slightly more athletic and quicker. He shoots the gaps better and is more disruptive during passing downs. I know what your saying, "well Suh has 10 more sacks than McCoy", well this is true. But remember, Suh is a senior and McCoy is a junior, thats why the numbers are skewed. Tampa Bay asks its DTs to be effective in the run game, but more importantly, penetrate the gaps and cause havoc in the backfield. This is what McCoy specializes in. Suh is a different type of DT. He anchors, reads and reacts, and then explodes through lineman. While I think he would succeed in Tampa Bay, i think McCoy would be more beneficial to their scheme.

The inevitable is going to happen. Shanahan will be taking the keys  to the car away from Jason Campbell. Wether it  be this year or next is to be seen. The Redskins have tons of talent on both sides of the ball, but where they are lacking is at the quarterback position, and left tackle. The Redskins can go one of two ways, Jimmy Clausen or Bryan Bulaga. It is becoming more and more likely that their franchise LT will retire this offseason, therefore creating a huge hole on the line. Bryan Bulaga is rated as the second best LT in the draft. He can come in and start right away. Jimmy Clausen is rated as the second best quarterback. It is not certain if he can come in and start immediately, but Shanahan is a quarterback guru. Either pick would be good for the Redskins.

Now on to the Chiefs with the fifth overall pick. Being fans of the Chiefs, we all know the needs of the team. Here’s a quick run down of what they are: NT, OC, OG, WR, 2x ILB, OLB, SS, FS. Ndamukong Suh is projected to be a DT in the 43 defense, or a DE in the 34 defense. This leads me to my second question...

Can Ndamukong Suh play Nose Tackle?

While most fans cringe at the thought of this, I don’t. I understand the frustrations of the fans. You guys don’t want square pegs in round holes. Carl Peterson drafted Brandon Albert to play LT, even though he was an LG in college. He also drafted Glenn Dorsey to play DT, and Dorsey is now trying his luck at DE in the 34 defense. While I agree with some of the frustrations, I believe Ndamukong Suh can play nose tackle in the 34 defense. During the 09’ season, Suh weighed 295-300 lbs. Since his last game, he has put on 7-12 lbs. That tells me that he does his due diligence in the weight room, and can easily pack on muscle. Nose tackles weight usually ranges from 305-350 lbs. While 307 is a little light for the type of nose tackle Romeo Crennel likes, I believe Suh can bulk up even further. I think by the time the season begins, he can be around 315-320 lbs with the proper training. Now I’m not just basing my theory on weight, I actually went back and watched tape. While watching the tape, I saw a massive DT who plays like a 0-gap nose tackle, and like a 3-technique defensive tackle, depending on the play. Suh anchors and takes on multiple blocks with the best of them. His lower body strength is amazing. He also has great hand technique. His arms stay extended, and he sheds lineman effortlessly. I have full confidence that Suh can play nose tackle in the 34 defense. Another good thing about Suh playing nose tackle, is that he would be a 3-down player. During 1st and 2nd down, he can use his bull like strength, and on 3rd/passing downs, he can explode through lineman to collapse the pocket. He has a bevy of moves, unlike most nose tackles in this years draft. I’ve seen him execute the hump, swim, rip, and bull rush. If somehow Ndamukong Suh falls to the Chiefs, not only do I think he should be the choice, but I think he should start at nose tackle.

What do you guys think?

Awesome post Larry

maybe we don’t need to pack weight on Suh if we get him but let the whole Aging process happen naturally. Edwards could spell him and of course we could grab a 4th or 5th round to eventually replace Edwards in due time. Tampa Bay is the key. Maybe a DJ in there Tampa-2 would help us tremendously to make that happen.

Thanks!

Exactly! Most rookies pack on pounds over time. i think he can do it…Maybe we can draft Al Woods in the 5th for depth.

I don't think he can get it done as a 3-4 NT....or he could get it done, but its not his best position.

That said…if he is there at 5….can you say trade down? Swap 1sts get a 2nd and a 5th drop back to mid late first and grab some needs without reaching

by Zimmy on Mar 1, 2010 7:32 PM CST reply actions

Suh would make a better NT than all of the projected NT's in this draft.

Just that he was above reach until maybe now.

Crick is gonna be a monster next year and look out for Baker Steinkuhler too....

…Oh yeah and Jason Ankrah and….. Oh man Nebraska’s defense is gonna be NASTY for a long time.

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

he could certainly play in a 1 gap system

like Dallas… he’s going to be better than Ratliff, IMO.

Suh could probably also play in Crennel’s system, though he wouldn’t be ideal…

He’s a special talent, and IF he happens to fall to KC… Pioli proably snags him

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

I disagree

I think if he falls to us Pioli answers the phone when it rings and takes the extra picks, because Im sure it would be ringing off the wall if he is still there at #5 and we know Pioli loves to get extra picks when he can

Who would you like to draft to play NT?

Im guessing Cody? He’s the only true nose tackle in the draft. All the other prospects are bonafide 43 DTs, but are projected to play NT in he 34 defense.

This has been my point since day one. We need a 34NT and Suh isn’t an ideal fit. That’s not to detract from the man’s abilities but I don’t want another tweener on our D-line. I’d much rather have Cody in the 2nd round.

I agree....

but I’m not sure what dorsey’s value would be. I think a team we should look at is tampa bay if we have designs on trading dorsey. Dorsey is a comparable talent to mccoy and suh and they may be willing to give us their second. He’s a guy that would fit in perfectly their system, it would assure us that they wouldn’t be taking Suh and we have back to back high 2nd round draft picks…. which are going to be gold in a draft this deep.

Depends on the position though

NT is not one of those that you can get away with in many cases by going small. By Suh’s own admission, he played and dominated at 291. No way he cuts it at NT at that weight and no way he’s the same player if you put 40lbs on his frame. I don’t like it.

You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.

Suh, Berry or

Baylor’s JD Walton interviewed by Josh Looney at the combine.

Baylor C J.D. Walton wants NFL scouts to…put the Baylor/Nebraska game tape into the DVD player and hit play….

Walton knows that Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh is viewed by many as the top defensive player in this year’s draft. With Suh potentially going number one overall this April, Walton thinks that his performance vs. the Huskers’ front-line stud speaks for itself.

I know that you don’t take a Center/Guard at #5, but maybe a trade down for him. Cuz anyone who can handle Suh is the guy we want on our team if we don’t/can’t pick him.

Is J.D. Walton on crack?

What does he want people to watch from that tape? Does he want scouts to watch Suh line up across from the right guard with J.D. Walton helping on the double team? Ok, yes, the two of them did keep Suh relatively quiet in that game. Suh only recorded 5 tackles and 1 sack in that game. However, with Suh drawing a double team the entire game, the Husker’s other defensive tackle (Jared Crick) went on to record 13 total tackles, 10 of which were solo tackles, and 5 sacks. Crick was the NCAA defensive player of the week after that game.

Walton is out of his damn mind if he wants anyone at all to watch tape of that game.

There's no way

on Jah’s green Earth Suh falls to 5. He’s too special a talent and even the Ratface fucker(h/t HIV) isn’t stupid enough to let him past 4. It’s too many spots to drop and while the Dorsey draft day comparison is valid I think Suh has far more of a unique talent. I don’t even see him getting past Tampa because let’s face it Ryan Simms plays for them, plus I don’t even think GM Mark Dominik scouts outside the Big 12. I’m sure he masturbates himself to Suh’s game film. I would love nothing more for him to fall to us at #5 because there is no other player in this Top 10 I would rather spend the money on than him. But that ain’t gonna happen.

I'm back and forth on this

As you said, he has the lower body power and hand technique to adapt into the role of nose tackle. Plus, he looks to have a relatively low body fat % for a 300+ guy, so he could probably add some weight in the next few years and grow into a 325-330lb guy.

The other side, though, is projecting what the extra weight will do to his game and, as has been said by others, it is another case of trying to just “make a guy fit” into the system instead of going after someone who may not be as talented overall, but fits perfectly in the role of a nose tackle. Obviously, a great deal of drafting these days requires a lot of projection by NFL teams(especially ones that run the 3-4, which is so rare as a college defense) trying to figure out whether or not, for example, a spread option QB can transition into a good pro passer. Suh, if it is determined that adding 25+ lbs would do more harm than good, would not be able to sit and anchor with consistency at the NFL level, I don’t think. Being strong isn’t enough in many cases and that is why nose tackles need that extra lead in their pants. It can be done effectively at a lower weight, such as in the case of Kelly Gregg in Baltimore, who is listed at 315. However, the reason he can get away with it has a great deal to do with the fact that he’s only 6’ tall and thus has a natural leverage advantage over most guys he goes up against. Couple that with his great hand technique and it makes him a pretty good football player. With Suh being just an eighth of an inch shy of 6’4", it makes it easier for offensive lineman to get under him and negate a bunch of his ability to generate power. So, for me, it all hinges on what his growth potential is. Its a “wait and see” kind of thing.

I’m not sure what I would do if I were Pioli.

and what about the corollary?

I am very leery of Cody. I am worried about all of his weight and what it might indicate of his work habits. But, perhaps Haley is able to get through to him and get him to lose a bunch of weight. Does this help him become better or not?

Each of Suh and Cody seem like somewhat of a gamble for the position we want them to play. I’m unsure but if I had to choose I think I’d rather gamble on Suh.

All things that have to be considered

Personally, I just don’t have the questions about Terrence Cody’s work habits or work ethic, but I have the luxury of knowledge gleaned from almost 3 years worth of reading articles, practice reports, and watching games that he played in. He’s done nothing but get better, as far as I can tell, so I would call that someone who works hard. The fact that he started out so incredibly overweight and out of shape is certainly something worth wondering about. And as far as whether or not losing a bunch of weight would help or not, I think it becomes one of those “projections” issues. After all, is he more effective just because he’s too heavy to move? When I looks at Mt Cody, I see tremendous potential, because even with as much bad weight as he is carrying, he is still fairly athletic and very effective before he wears down. If he stays dedicated, and whoever drafts him is patient, in 3 years he will look like a different playerm

His potential for muscle growth is incredible because he has such a huge frame(6’4" with 11+" hands and correspondingly large arm and leg bones), so he can drop 40+ lbs of bad weight and pack it back on in good weight. If you can see some explosiveness now, it can only get better as he loses fat and adds quick twitch muscle fiber.

I'm not sold on height being a problem for defensive lineman anymore...

we see more and more teams using shotgun offenses that have everyone basically standing up. Yet d lineman still have their hand in the dirt…. only during goal line stands do you even see offensive linemen with their hands in the dirt anymore.

yeah I saw some discussions about that

concerning concussions… but who knows what will come of that… I think that would almost force the spread into the nfl….

Larry, I'm surprised you have Tampa Bay taking McCoy ... I keep hearing they want Berry

then too, that mght be wishful thinking by some APers hoping this or that person OTHER than Berry will fall to #5 …

so, can Suh be a 3-4 NT? elephino … he IS a great athlete, and he’s one of the VERY few players I’d rather have aside from Okung (damn we need OLine!) … I know we do NOT want Cody, period, end of discussion … Williams? dunno, maybe but a bit of a reach … McClain? perhaps, not working out at combine won’t help the guy’s case …

Suh is a beast, so IF he drops that far, then yeah … I’m sure Crennel could figure out SOME place to put him

nice post, larry, good thoughts, well laid out … whatever happens, intersting thoughts and ideas, though I’m guessing it will be more like …

I'm not certain he can play NT

I think he probably could, but I can’t be sure since he has never been asked to do something like that.

However, I am almost certain that if he somehow fell to #5 Pioli would draft him in a heartbeat…if he can play NT, great. If not, he cam play DE and we can trade Dorsey, or keep them all and have a constantly rested, nightmare of a defensive line.

EVERYTHING starts in the trenches, and Pioli freakin’ knows it.

The following are the words of Texas Tech guard Brandon Carter regarding Suh

Carter called Suh “the most dominant player in college football,” but said each has his own strengths.

“I think McCoy has great ball get-off — he’s really great with his hands,” Carter said. "Suh, he’s more of a strength guy. He can move an offensive lineman however he wants.

Awesome post. Rec'd.

I believe he can play it because he is THAT talented…that he could play out of position, much like Dorsey…

in one of your earlier posts you wrote that Dorsey at times played as the NT and was eating double teams, correct? why couldn’t a rotation of Suh and Dorsey moving from NT to DE work? i would think that would wear down an o-line quickly and would allow for a bunch of different looks.

Remember

He’s going to have to learn a new position, and that’ll be hard on anyone. But he’s a good football player, and Pioli would find his “Wilfork”. We even go 2-5 formation during passing downs so he wouldn’t have to be a full down line man.

I’ve also heard Dorsey has manned the NT spot and done surprisingly well, but he’s not a full time starter there IMO. If we got Suh we could switch it up sometimes to confuse the Offense put Suh at DE and Dorsey at NT, if we could successfully teach Suh the NT position he’d be very versatile and dangerous. Especially since Crennel said he wasn’t being held to just the 3-4 and might play some 4-3 next year too.

This is all predicated on the notion that Suh doesn’t fail completely when he comes into the league. DL have a tendency to take a while to develop(see Dorsey or Jackson for good examples), but Dorsey is looking to become real good, and Jackson can only get better.

IMHO if we can control the trenches we’ll control the game.

by Green-Monster on Mar 2, 2010 1:00 AM CST reply actions

I think Suh will be a GREAT NT in the NFL, if he plays the position. He’s Jay Ratliff, only much better, and Ratliff is a deserved All Pro. Pioli said there are different NT’s types in the 3-4, and Suh would be great for us, but I seriously doubt he’ll fall. I think a line of Dorsey, Suh, T- Jax will become the best 3-4 line in the NFL, and they better with the money they’d be getting.

by dablueguy on Mar 2, 2010 1:28 AM CST reply actions

Sorry I'm late

Suh impressed me with pretty muchevery thing he has done. At the combine he had nine more reps at the bench then Mccoy. What did Pioli say when he came on. We want fast, strong, intelligent and hard working football players. [ paraphrase DL version]. Sounds like he fits the bill. Dorsey T’Jax and Suh would have ‘em steppin and fetching like there heads were on fire and there ass’es were catchin!

The most important thing you can do in life is help other people.

by dklogue1 on Mar 2, 2010 11:12 AM CST reply actions

Suh

All the doubters on Suh play NT – I saw him standing next to T. Cody and Suh is bigger in the upper body and legs than a 357 lb monster – At 307 he is one of the biggest bodies at the combine. He is strong enough and can take up multiple blockers. If it would make you feel better I guess we could ask him to get a beer gut so he looks more like a NT???? If the Rams pass on Suh we need to trade with Detroit. Move up and get him – I am willing to give our 2b pick and swap 1st rounders. I am that impressed with this guy. I saw Cam Thomas and the other NT prospects last night in the Combine and they did not impress me at all. Suh is who we need to anchor our D-line for the next 6 – 10 years…..

will not be there at #5. So we have our decision made for us…the question is:

What if they are both still there at #5? Which one do we choose?

No disrespect...

But as far as the Chiefs are concerned, this is a pointless conversation.

Yes, I think he can play NT, but it doesn’t matter, b/c he won’t be there at #5, and Pioli’s not trading up to get him.

So…uh…yeah…

by kcsno56 on Mar 2, 2010 3:31 PM CST reply actions

sorry for bein late but i just joined

if suh can supposedly play a 0-technique, why hasn’t dorsey (remember: dorsey was one of the top defensive prospects of the decade, just like suh) or jackson tried it? playing a 0-technique is unlike any other spot on the field, both in the way it is played and the transitions that players can make towards it. thinking a player who has never done it to step in and be tremendous is a rediculous assumption. “but he’s smart!”… when did we all become suh’s personal assistants in his quest for becoming a 3-4 NT? hes been a 1/2-technique guy his entire college career and he will stay that way in the nfl.

by YogaFlame on Mar 3, 2010 12:11 AM CST reply actions

This is the way I look at it:

SUH is excellent at shedding blockers
SUH has a good 3 inches of height on Dorsey
SUH is powerfully strong and can control linemen
SUH creates so much havoc on the line that he comands double teams, sometimes more

Is SUH an proto-typical NT? No but a NT’s job is to absorb blockers
Sounds to me like he can do the job.

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

WRITE IT DOWN!

I personally know people at Nebraska

so I trust what I’ve been told about him. While I dont know Suh personally, I do know other players and coaches on the team…and I trust their word.

People there compare his work ethic and strength to former Huskers Kyle Vanden Bosch, Chris Kelsay and Adam Carriker (all of whom won lifter of the year awards under Boyd Epley).

The studs from the 2010 draft class will be: DT Ndamukong Suh, S Eric Berry, RB C.J. Spiller, RB Jahvid Best, WR Arrelious Benn, WR Golden Tate, WR Mardy Gilyard, OT Charles Brown, CB Kyle Wilson and S Chad Jones
