Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Donte' Stallworth

Today the Cleveland Browns made a roster move cutting WR Donte Stallworth. Today was the first day Stallworth was eligible to return to the NFL.

We all know the story of Donte Stallworth. Stallworth killed a man that was jaywalking while he was intoxicated. I bring up Donte just because I like to take a look at every guy possible that could help our Kansas City Chiefs.

Stallworth would also be a huge possibility in KC since he played for Pioli in New England and played for Romeo Crennel in Cleveland.

Donte has been a pretty solid WR in his career producing 296 Cacthes for 4,383 Yards and 32 TDs.

Stallworth would be a cheap option for the Chiefs and could really help us out in the air...What do you think?

it's a tough call

he seems to be an underachiever in the last couple years… and it’s hard to defend a guy that kills someone while drunk driving…

but, then again… who knows?

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters

Why not!??

Sign him for the veterans minimum and see what he’s got.
The more weapons the Chiefs put around Tebow Cassel, the more likely he is to succeed

Maybe Haley's tutelage would help Donte

Our WR’s had few injuries this season and other than A “HUGE ASS” mistake
Donte’s biggest issue is nagging injuries. I hope we at least look.

Romeo should have a lot of input on this one :)

Exactly

Romeo and Pioli should know a little about him. I know he had a decent year in New England with 697 yards. Stallworth would make an awesome 3rd WR if we can just find a number 1 or 2 guy. I do think we would be okay with Bowe Chambers and Stallworth though.

As in playing out of the slot?

not really

he’s more of a big play guy, I think.

Yup

I know hes a deep threat but he could play the slot IMO

Couldn't hurt to bring him in for a workout

Hard to overlook his proneness to injury, though.

Not sure why we would care if Romeo approves...

Its Weis’ system he has to fit.

Romeo was his HC

and should know him better than any of the other staff.
There is a reason why we have an All-Star staff :)

Still doesn't explain...

Why Romeo’s approval is necessary. Obviously he would be consulted about work ethic, character, etc, but Romeo really isn’t in a position to put his stamp of approval on an offensive player when he’s not the HC.. Or the OC.

Crennel has no idea who will and who won’t work in Weis’ system. Or Haley’s system for that matter.

Work Ethic and charachter are big things for Crennel to know about a player as well

I get what your saying about the system but Crennel has been around the guy and knows how he is. Also Crennel has worked with Weis before so Im sure hes atleast a little familiar as too what kind of guys Weis likes.

True

I was refering to what you said about Romeo’s input. I agree the Weis and Haley would have the final say on the fit.

Donte Stallworth, is an old washed up, has been. IN fact he's a NEVER has been.

Donte has never ever hit 1000 yards receiving in his entire career. Stop it. Kc fans. Stop with the same old mentality. We want elite players here now. If you can’t tell by watching the colts and saints play ball, you need elite players to be an elite team. Stallworth sucks. He’s going to be 30 yrs old and he’s been out of football completely. Stop it now.

We don’t want him. We want Brandon Marshall or Boldin and Dez. Keep chambers also. We need elite status players. No more has been washed up criminal types here in KC. good riddance. I hope he NEVER even comes to KC to watch a game.

by krayfish on Feb 9, 2010 7:10 AM CST reply actions   1 recs

Chris Chambers aint exactly elite

And if you held you breath while we search for three 1,000-yard receivers to field, well, let’s just say you’d be missed.

That said, I’ll agree with you that Donte Stallworth aint the answer. I’ve no quarrel with bringing him in to compete for depth, but I wouldn’t say he’s better than any other replacement level receiver on a decently-talented team.

The only awy we’re going to get quality receivers in KC is to breed them ourselves, just like those Saints and Colts you mentioned.

You don't want Stallworth but you'd take Brandon Marshall?

I couldn’t care less about Stallworth, but Marshall is a fucking cancer. Keep that injury-faking-after-the-pro-bowl-roster-is-announced dude as far away as possible.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

We have to aim higher.

A couple years ago, I recall being hyped that we signed Devard Darling. Thats how bad are receiving core was. And then being excited about Bradley.

In reality, Chambers is the best WR pick up in our teams history thus far. Signing Donte is cool, as long as he is the 4th WR.
Hopefully 2010-11 looks like…
WR1. A.Boldin
WR2. D.Bowe
WR3.C.Chambers
WR4.A.Benns/G.Tate/M.Gilyard
WR5.D.Stallworth or T.Copper

correct lj27, we need to start learning as fans that it's ok to aim high.

We are seriously in a low end mind set here in KC. We’re all so willing to jump up and down over some very average at best players. I’m over that way of thinking. I want elite players across the board. A dynasty can have nothing less. I want a dynasty and Stallworth has nothing to do with that. TT, what about BM? you think there’s any chance we could do something with him?

by krayfish on Feb 9, 2010 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

Id deff be pumped about bringing in BM I just dont see it happening,..

The main reason I brought up Donte’ was just because of his obvious connections to KC.

by tomahawk44 on Feb 9, 2010 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

I would be stunned. If the Chiefs finally purged themselves of LJ I can't see them going down this road.

I can’t imagine a scenario in which Pioli would bring an obvious malcontent in to poison the locker room. It would be like bringing in a younger version of TO. Marshall is the very antithesis of the “right 53.”

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

Donte

Let’s not forget that Donte Stallworth hit this man in the early hours of the morning. Like 6am. That’s when most of us are waking up and getting ready to head to work. Donte was winding down from a night of binge drinking and heading home to pass out until 2 or 3 in the afternoon. This alarms me for plenty of reasons.
First of all, what the hell is he doing partying like a 19 year old frat boy. I understand that alot of these players are very young, but putting yourself in a position to throw away millions and millions of dollars is just plain stupid.
Secondly, the punishment Donte received does not sit well with me. I feel very uncomfortable with the idea that the Kansas City Chiefs would give someone a second shot who really never had his first taken away. Let me elaborate before you start yelling at me about him losing a year of football. He killled a man. He got wasted, drove home and killed a man on the way. The fact that he wasn’t locked up for 15 years is beyond me. Plaxico gets two years for shooting himself and Donte kills another man and basically walks. The fact that he was jay walking means nothing to me. If you are so incoherent that you literally KILL A MAN, you don’t deserve to wear Red and Gold in my opinion.
Finally, and my least important point, is work ethic. Yes he is going to show up, say all of the right things and hope to get back in the good graces of the NFL. 6am? Dude, was partying until 6am. I’m not going to say that I’m in bed at 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Hell I was up having more than my share of adult beverages til 4 Friday night. Know what the difference is? I smart enough to do it in my own house. My friends can sleep on the couch and I’m not driving anywhere. How does this pertain to work ethic? If he isn’t smart enough to watch his own back, what would we expect from him during the season? I see another very talented man who will not take the extra steps to ensure success in this league(DBowe anyone?).
If we want to make a wide receiver splash, let’s make a real go at getting Dez Bryant, not wasting time and money on people with questionable character.

by Godlovetheredman14 on Feb 9, 2010 9:01 AM CST reply actions

Well I agree with you to a point..

Now I do believe his punishment should have been more than it was I dont think 15 years would of been fair either..Donte’ was slamming his breaks and was blowing his horn from what I understand. Jaywalking was a big part of this problem. This is coming from someone whose best friend was takin away by a drunk driver at a young age…I do get what you are saying about work ethic though and I too do not think these guys need to be our partying all night long.

by tomahawk44 on Feb 9, 2010 9:11 AM CST up reply actions

Agree Whole-Heartedly..

I don’t think this POS deserves another shot in the NFL, PERIOD! His crime should have justified a helluva lot longer sentence. I recently wrote a paper on this incident. The Reyes family was paid off to keep a lid on it and not press for the maximum. I don’t think because you have money, you should walk with such a weak sentence for murder. I don’t want this head case anywhere near my beloved Chiefs. And if we got him, I’d be pissed off. Would any of you buy his jersey? Maybe change the name on the back to “StallworthLESS or Murderer?”

Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:

1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

Plaxico's time

was the minimum under New York City law that he could get. New York isn’t exactly gun-friendly.

Stallworth accidentally ran over someone who was basically in the middle of the street. He stopped. I believe he might have called the police as well, but he took responsibility for what he did. To me, that shows a lot of character in a day where people typically will drive the fuck off.

Now, I am not familiar with anything else with the story. But I think the family could pressed charges and then taken him to civil court as well… they didn’t. You are not the family, nor the judge. He has done what the law asked of him to do.

So full of sh*t that toilet bowls have to wipe.

by IISaiNtII on Feb 9, 2010 1:46 PM CST up reply actions

only thing is, concerning the punishment...

we have to accept what people are given by the courts until we change the courts themselves. Or we could go to law school and try to get elected judge. I can agree that the taking of a life deserves more than what he got, but I cant change that.

As I said when the 2.7 crap was going on with his law dealings, he deserved a second chance. If we as a society, refused to give second chances to people, I believe many of us might not have the freedoms we enjoy today. Our population would be half of what it is and we would have more prisons than schools. Some of our own families would be directly affected.

Now I am neutral about bringing in Stallworth, because I dont know much about him. I can see both sides of what everyone is saying, but the bottom line is, he did the crime and paid his time. Until he messes up again, he deserves a second chance IF a team wants to give it to him.

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

gimmie a break

he made a mistake some of you are acting like he did it on purpose. i see a whole parking lot of drunk drivers leave the game every gameday making the same mistake only they are not unlucky enough to come across a jaywalker in a blind spot. now if he goes Jared Allen or Leonord Little and does it again then i can understand. J.A. and leonard little both got 4 games and little killed someone then got 4 games the next time he got a dui and neither did the jailtime stallworth did. and you can sure as hell bet that little did nothing to make it right with the family he destroyed, stallworth has .

WR needs to be addressed

But not with Stallworth or any other teams WR’s. Lets draft our own this time. Dez Bryant is going to be a great player and would push D. Bowe to become better. Since ’89 the team has not gone after any of the best college receivers and we end up with slippery hand, or slow WRs. Bowe was a first round pick and has all the skills, but has not met expectations. Dez Bryant is what our offense needs now. JC will be more effective next season if the passing game can pick it up. Cassel needs the reliable target.

OH please. Stop making excuses. He murdered somebody. What has happened to us in America?

We worship gang bangers and thugs. We applaud people liek TuPac who openly admits to being a killer in a gang? What? Screw Stallworth. It shouldn’t matter if you have millions of dollars or not when the verdict is being handed out. A non millionaire would be doing hard time. He killed a man. There is no way to downplay that.

When you have millions of dollars because your poor fans spend their hard earned money on your products, you owe something back. Nobody partied harder than me in the day. But I ALWAYS had a ride if I was drinking. And I don’t have millions of throw away dollars. He could have paid someone to drive him home. He could have taken a taxi.

He didn’t care about his team, his fans or his bosses. At all. And he didn’t care about the risk he put others in when he got behind the wheel and murdered someone.

That being said, he is not the answer from a football perspective. He’s more of the same ol’ same ol’. We need a couple high quality guys in here now. HIGH quality guys.

Kray I agree

But all of the players in the NFL are not former/or Current altar boys.
People make mistakes and unlike most Stallworth stopped and took the consequences.
Fessed up and paid in his reputation and his money. Lost his job. I don’t know how he will respond in the future but I never heard a word from him except regret for what happened.
Maybe his football skills are not what the Chiefs need but in integrity he has passed a test of sorts and Heaven forbid I was in his shoes I would hope I had the “Nuts” to do it like he did.

by Chiefho on Feb 10, 2010 9:42 AM CST reply actions

Stallworth's most valuable asset

is his speed. He’s a good split end because he stretches the field with his speed. His season longs include receptions of 69, 84, 43, 45, 76, and 57. If he still has 4.3 speed and can be signed cheaply, it creates a lot of flexibility for the offense to move Bowe (and Chambers if resigned) around to create favorable matchups.

If they sign him, I’m cool with it. If they dont give him any thought, I’m fine with that too.
