The Tight End Dilemma
Do we go after a top tier TE or not? That is question I keep asking myself. Do we feel what we lost in Tony G and want that feeling back? Or are we just fine with the blocking TE who can occasionally catch a pass?
Lets dive into this head first and maybe find an answer to this once and for all...
In 1997, with the 13th pick overrall the Kansas City Chiefs select Tony Gonzalez.....and the rest is history. From 1997 until his last game with the Chiefs in 2009 Tony Gonzalez was one of the elite TE in all of the NFL. Most say he was the best ever at the position. For 12 seasons Tony amazed us. Then reality came crashing in. Tony was traded away, just like the snap of your fingers, he was gone. Vanished into thin Falcon air.
Have we as Chiefs fans taken for granted what Tony meant to our club. No matter how you felt about Tony he was an absolute great at his position. We will more than likely never have that back. Players like Tony only come around once in a teams franchise history.
After having said all that, lets look to the present and future of our TE situation.
Leonard Pope - 13 games 20 rec 174yrds 1td
Pope really came on at the end of the season. He was a pretty reliable option for Matt Cassel. My only concern is that I believe Leonard's ceiling isnt much higher then his 20 receptions. I think he is a number 2 TE.
Sean Ryan - 10 games 14 rec 135yrds 2td
Sean played in the first 6 games of the season and was never heard from again. A career journeyman who has probably seen his last days as a Chief.
Brad Cottam - 8 games 9 rec 120yrds 0td
Brad Cottam is a guy who a lot of you think still has potential. I tend to agree to an extent. He is still young and still has a very nice size to him. He finished out last season with a 4 rec 62yrd game against the Browns and was sidelined the rest of the year after that. This kid has the most potential out of all of our TE but I still believe he is a number 2 TE.
Jake O'Connell - 4 games 2 rec 7yrds
Jake had a catch in each of the last two games of the year. He is a guy who I think is still a project. He was a Pioli pick in the 7th round. I think they give him more time to develop. He has a nice size at 6'4 255lbs. I dont think he makes the TE rotation next season.
As for our future at TE. We now have a new OC who will be drawing up different plays for them instead of the TE killer, Haley. Todd Haley is widely known for under utilizing the TE position.
As for Weis....well lets look at how he used his TE at Notre Dame and that will give us a better look at how our TE may produce.
Kyle Rudolph TE - 6'6 260
2008 - 11 games 29 rec 340yrds 2td
2009 - 9 games 33 rec 364yrds 3td (missed last 3 games)
2007 - 12 games 40 rec 372yrds 3td (leading reciever)
2006 - 11 games 47 rec 634yrds 4td
2005 - 12 games 47 rec 576yrds 2td
So as you can see the TE position was very important in Charlie Weis' ND offense. That leads me to believe he has plenty of plays that utilize the recieving skills of the TE.
So the answer is YES! We should go after a really good TE. A guy that can catch the football and help Matt Cassel when he is in trouble.
Here are some guys who could possibly be a fit for the Kansas City Chiefs.
These are unrestricted Free Agents according to www.theredzone.org
Alge Crumpler Titans - 6'2 262 32yrs old
2009 - 22 rec 222yrds 1td - Best season - 2005 - 65 rec 877yrds 5td
Age is what concerns me here. Alge Crumpler was the driving force behind the Atlanta Falcons with Michael Vick. But at 32yrs old and having been beat up on for years....is he past his time to be a solid contributer?
LJ Smith Ravens - 6'3 258lbs 29yrs old
2009 - 2 rec 31yrds (first year in baltimore playing behind Todd Heap) Best season 2005 - 61rec 682yrds 3td
Has LJ lost his magic? Once a big time TE in Philly with McNabb throwing him the ball. His time in Philly came to an end...did his career also? This guy has hands but I would be concerned about the Philly TE system....they now have Brent Celek running the show. Is Philly the Colts of the NFC but with TE instead of WR?
Ben Watson Patriots - 6'3 255lbs 29yrs old(will turn 30 on Dec 18th...my bday!)
2009 - 29 rec 404yrds 5td - Best season - 2006 - 49 rec 643yrds 3td
Ben Watson is a guy a lot of people around here have been talking about. He is a Patriot so that gives him more of a shot than anyone to come here. He has been pretty solid through his career accumulating 20td...but nothing flashy. During his wonderlic test he scored a (rumored) 48...that measures out to a 172IQ and that puts him in the top 99.9999% percentile.....just so you know, there are no measurables above 99.9999. So to put it lightly, this boy is smart. Watson was drafted in the 1st round of the 2004 NFL Draft by none other than Scott Pioli...so obviously Scott holds him to a high regard. He was taken at pick 32 while Vince Wilfork was taken the same year at pick 21.
If we dont decide to go the Free Agency route. Here are some guys who will be available in the coming 2010 NFL Draft.
Jermaine Gresham Oklahoma 6'6 261 Rated number 1 TE by CBSsports.com
Sat out 2009 season due to injury
2008 - 66 rec 950yrds 14td
NFL Comparison: Marcedes Lewis, Jaguars
Rob Gronkowski Arizona 6'6 265 Rated number 2 TE
Sat out 2009 due to back injury
2008 - 47 rec 672yrds 10td
Gronkowski and Oklahoma's Jermaine Gresham, who missed last season because of a knee injury, are considered the two most talented tight ends in the draft. Gronkowski could have applied for a medical redshirt at Arizona, so he leaves behind two years of eligibility. He said Friday he has hired powerhouse sports agent Drew Rosenhaus.
Aaron Hernandez Florida 6'2 250 Rated number 3 TE
2009 - 68 rec 850yrds 5td
He finished with 68 catches for 850 yards and nine touchdowns, including 32 catches in the Gators' final six games. He was Florida's leading receiver and led all SEC tight ends in receptions, receiving yards and receiving yards a game.
Dennis Pitta BYU 6'5 248 Rated number 9 TE
2008 - 83 rec 1083yrds 6td
2009 - 62 rec 829yrds 8td
NFL Comparison: Chase Coffman, Bengals
Very Good numbers at BYU. Could be a system guy though. Has great hands and is a huge part of BYU Offense.
Andrew Quarless Penn St. 6'5 253 Rated number 10 TE
2009 - 41 rec 536yrds 3td
First full season as starting TE. Very athletic and has great build.
He had a drinking charge on him in 2007 and 2008.
If his coaches tell NFL scouts that he truly has matured over the past year, Quarless' soft hands, good speed, and solid blocking effort may cause teams to consider selecting him early on Draft Saturday.
So there we have it. I hope we learned that we do need to invest in a better TE. Our TE's are solid but nothing to brag about. And yes I am spoiled from Tony G. I want our TE to be a part of the offense again.
With our new TE coach Bernie Parmalee at the helm, I think now is the time to make a move on our future starting TE.
Just as a side note - Scott Pioli drafted 9 TE out of his 10 drafts with the Pats. He did not select one in his last 3 drafts. I would say he has a thing for drafting a TE. Oh and he is one for one drafting them in our draft.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Crumpler no, LJ Smith no (just because his name starts with LJ).
I would like to see Watson brought in, and Pope, Cottam, and O’Connell fight it out for the 2/3 spots. I think Watson could thrive here already having that connection with Cassel and bring more valuable leadership to this team.

There are more pressing needs than TE.
We could get by on Pope but he’ll never be an all-pro.. I wouldn’t mind us at least tossing our hat into the Ben Watson discussion though
KRRRAKATAWAA
We juggled te's all season
so viewing their stats is not a valid assessment. Pope wasn’t here all yr, Cottom was hurt, Ryan couldn’t block and got benched (praise the lord). But if you combine those stats I’ds say Pope and Cottom could fill in respectably with 45+ combined receptions, 600+ yards and 6-8 tds. We have more pressing needs.

Good thing about the TE position
Is that a lot of teams have their TE for the future…they wont draft one high. That leaves a lot of good TE in later rounds. Could be a great position to get a steal for us.

Good post and observation that our TE’s will be better utilized under Weis. Like you said, it’s important to have a reliable guy to drop it off to when your receivers aren’t open, thus hanging on to the ball for too long. I’m anxious to see how this position develops in the coming season.
i would like to see Parmalee
really help develop Cottam and O’Connell. Hopefully in camp even if we do pick up a FA TE that Parmalee can help bring Cottam/O’Connell to the next level and this is one less place we have to draft over and over again!

I'm a fan of Brad Cottam but
he was drafted to replace Jason Dunn, not Tony. The guy can catch the football but not to be counted on as the featured TE. Use one of the 5 picks. There seems to be lots of good talent coming out this year.
gordymule
Gresham is a pssibility with our 2nd round pick
if he doesn’t get picked in the 1st.
I'd roll with Cottam and Pope
Too many holes than to worry about the Tight End.

Yeah
Thats what Pioli said about the offensive line last year…lol
I know we have holes that need to be filled first. NT, FS, MLB, etc….
But TE is very important too. I wouldnt consider TE any more filled then NT. Both have guys but not the “right” guy. I want defense, defense, and more defense, so dont get me wrong. But TE is a need for both Cassel and to help take pressure off the WR.

I like both Pope and Cottam.
No real football reason really, I just remember some of their plays. Cottam broke his neck for us, I really hope he can come back and really learn the game. It will only be his third year after all. He was behind TG as a rookie and stuck in the rotation this year. Think back by the way, it took Tony a while to catch on actually, and he did have a sophmore slump.
I like Pope for his size, and as a blocker. I’ve said it several times already, but I didn’t get to watch many of this years games. But I know of at least twice where I had to rewind the feed and watch again after he blocked the crap out of a guy.
That said, I want whatever is best for the team in the long run, so whatever works.

Lol. That's funny. You can't argue with that line of reasoning "he broke his neck for us".
The guilt trip alone makes me vote him to stay. Excellent. LOL. Just for that he stays. He did break his neck for us after all. SOLD!

Will Cottam be ok to come back? Haven’t heard anything…
by 12t on Feb 4, 2010 6:05 PM CST up reply actions
yeah, sounds like he's on the way to a full recovery
not sure if he’ll be ready for camp or not, though
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
As per Matt Grbacs request...
I came over to offer this up. I think Cottam has CRAZY potential. He has all the tools to become a Jason Whitten type TE. I don’t know that he’ll ever be able to block as well but has the size/hands to become a GREAT pass catching TE. We really need to find a really kick ass Jason Dunn type blocker still and I don’t know if Pope can be that guy.
I have seen times when the Az Cardinals have brought in a O-lineman and lined him up as a TE to help in run support. The Chiefs should possibly consider doing that when we are trying to close out games or are in obvious short yardage running situations.
by Chiefsfan1970 on Feb 5, 2010 1:47 PM CST up reply actions
I say dump Sean Ryan and O'Connell
and keep Cottam and Pope. I wouldn’t mind the Chiefs picking up Colin Peek TE, Alabama who is a really good blocker with pretty good hands with a 5th round pick. He could act as our third tight end and eventually take Pope’s position possibly as the number 1 TE.
i just dont want to see a pick we could have used
to be used on a position that isnt necessarily “hurting” when we have a few that are OL, S, LB’s. We can use that 5th rounder to build depth, while trying to sort out what we have now, and what will be available in UDFA.
Warriors come out and play
I agree
I just threw some names out there….some guys I figured would be there.

If we draft D with our
first pick and Gresham is sitting there with our first 2nd then take him. There is no other TE better than him whether in the draft or FA. He can catch and is a beast of a blocker with good speed. Many mocks have Bengals taking him round 1, but you never know.
Gresham is a great looking TE....
I also love Aaron Hernandez out of Florida….very good hands and can run great with the ball.

Agreed on A.H.
Peek is a good one as well. I’m partial to OU. McClain with our #5 and Gresham at TE would be good picks. I’m still on the D. Bryant bandwagon though.
Hopefully this time next year...
We’ll have fewer holes to fill and will be picking in the 15-25 range and will have the luxory of taking a top shelf TE. This year, however, those top picks need to be used to filled the glaring holes.
Top picks yeah
But we could land a great TE in round 3 4 or even maybe 5

exactly we have to many holes elsewhere
when actually our TE’s are serviceable at this point and can hold the fort until next years draft.

reality check
O’Connell is probably sticking around, like it or not… he’s a Pioli draft pick, and a good special teamer… he can also block, and is known to be athletic. IMHO, he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
Pope and Cottam both still have a chance to perform for this team, so I don’t see KC making big moves for a TE.
I wouldn’t be opposed to Watson, or a draft pick… but I wouldn’t hold your breath

Pioli loves TE like Weis loves cake….its reality.

Stag you may be right
But after looking over my research, Weis really does do more with TE in the passing game then Haley did.
That makes me believe we will go after a pass catching TE….a guy like Pitta, Hernandez, etc.
Maybe we wont. Maybe Pioli, Weis, and Haley are satisfied with what they have….
Personally I am not satisfied and would love for the TE to be in the passing game again.
"Its going to be a challenge, its going to feel like forever, and there will be difficulties. But we will emerge on the other side of it stronger than we were when we entered." ~ Sudden
I think lack of TE in the passing game was as much a product of other factors as it was TE, specifically.
Once Cassel got that play-fake working, especially, we started seeing TEs with space and time.
What about that Tony Schefler out of Denver?
He’s shown flashes of brilliance as a pass catching TE, but was in McDaniels doghouse most of last year…he might be cheap.

"Its going to be a challenge, its going to feel like forever, and there will be difficulties. But we will emerge on the other side of it stronger than we were when we entered." ~ Sudden
Gresham > Gronkowski
Gresham would be a sure first rounder if it weren’t for his injury last season coupled with the ridiculous load of talent in this year’s Draft. He is the best receiving TE to come out in a while.
I don’t get the Mercedes Lewis comparison. More like a Kellen Winslow Jr. to me.
There is a good crop of TEs this year.
Excellent post Matty rec
If I see your point you want a TE that is a recieving threat. Weis seemed to target the TE around 4 times per game if my math is right. I wonder if Haley would target the TE anymore than that himself. I guess the issue is how MANY TE’s we want to carry on the roster in 2010. I would like a 2 – Solid blocking TE’s and one that at least could block and catch with some degree of certainty. Cottam seemed to be getting there as that 4 or so catches per game guy. Great write up :)

If we can get Watson that would be great
Pioli drafted him and Cassel played with him — they would be on the same page from day one.
If we can’t get Watson I don’t see a need in drafting a TE higher than the 5th round unless something ridiculous happens like Gresham falling to the 3rd. Pope and Cottam are servicable and we DID trade up to get a TE/special teams guy in last year’s draft by the name of Jake O’Connell — obviously Pioli saw something he liked.
That being said, if it were up to me I wouldn’t draft a TE at all in 2010, but look for options in FA, UDRFA, and next offseaon.
Yeah
I can agree with that…if we sign Watson we don’t need another TE.
He could fill the pass catching need…and the veteran leader role. He knows Weis offense and would fit right in the ‘right 53’

I dont think we draft a TE this year
As Matt pointed out, we have a plethora of TEs, many of whom have potential and may not have been in a postion/scheme to utilize thier potential. I would bet on Pioli finding an older, more capable TE via FA to mentor some of the younger guys, if we add one at all. This will give Weis a full year to evaluate the talent we currently have. If one of our TEs has a breakout year this year, than that will solve the problem. If not, than I would expect that TE will be near the top of the needs for next years draft class. I think there are too many other needs and too deep a draft in other areas to risk a pick on a TE when you have not had the time to evaluate the talent you have on hand.
That would be ok
But I hate the wait and see approach..
It didn’t work too well with the oline…I mean they got better but we could have used a Center last year in the draft.

FA ONLY!!
Please, for the love of God, do not piss away a draft pick on a TE. We’ve got more than enough TEs to work with, and I’m sure Weis / Parmalee can get them up to snuff. Cottam was under TG’s tutelage and Gonzo claimed he felt comfortable with BG becoming the next TG. Other pressing needs trump the TE pick. If Pioli is smart, he will avoid a TE from the 2010 draft class.
Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:
1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass
DAMN IT!!
Meant BC, not BG. Was getting them confused, maybe a Freudian slip. I’m hoping that Cottam can produce like TG, thus becoming a combination of himself and Tony G, and so BG is born. Hell, maybe even don a little “STE” on his chest, I don’t know…

The lowest paid position in the NFL
is Tight End. Why? Because its a strange hybrid of positions.
Is the tight end an extra receiver like Gonzo?
Is it an extra lineman lined up next a tackle for pass-protection?
It’s either or both depending on your scheme. Haley’s flavor of E/P doesn’t use the tight end as a receiver as often as Herm and Vermeil did. We should think of our TE and FB as blockers opening up big holes for Jamaal Charles, who catch passes as check-downs or on rare occasions to keep the opposing defense guessing.
Where are Jason Dunn and Tony Richardson when you need them?
Good Point
I feel like we have guys who can block decent and catch decent but can do nothing with great consistancy.
That’s why I want a WR/TE. I personally want Hernandez. He is a Chris Cooley type guy. He could really put our offense over. We need all the weapons we can get. TE is very important….you can do multiple things with guys like TG, Cooley, Dallas Clark, Shiancoe, etc.

Great player - I just think a guy that can stretch the field would be more impactful
Wouldn’t complain with AH. But if McCluster or Gilyard are available, I’d go with the little quick guy.
Your right
We need a speedster to keep the defense honest….keep those safeties far back as possible to open the middle of the field for Bowe and JC to just have a field day.
McCluster will go early though…Gilyard may go 2nd round…I also like Jacoby Ford.

Graham
reminds me a lot of Chris Cooley. He plays a H-Back role (tight end/full back mixture), maybe not quite as fast as Cooley but a stronger blocker than him.
Oh yea
and he’s my 4th rated tight end on my board, slotted as late 2nd/early 3rd.
P.S. This is totally random, but would anybody be interested in me posting my draft board? I’ve kind of wanted to but I’ve never done a fanpost on here. My dream has always been to become a player personnel scout in the NFL, but I havent reached that point yet. However, I do have a few years of experience coaching and scouting at the college level so I’d like to think I have at least a little knowledge and insight.
Sweet
Your my kind of guy! I love scouting but at my amateur level. I have never played or coached…but I am trying to learn everything I can so I can maybe get into coaching one day. Being a scout would be my dream also. We need to talk more!
And yeah you should post your board but make sure you include some insight/stats/info with it or some guys will jump all over you.

I wouldnt mind
bringing in at least one more TE to compete. If we go the FA route, I say Ben Watson, it just makes too much sense. If we draft another TE, I’d like to see us take Pitta from BYU or Peek from Alabama. I think we could get either guy in the later rounds. But, I am also still holding out hope for Cottam to emerge!
Yes, he was great and I loved watching him year in and year out
But I’m also happy that the Chiefs are moving on as a team. My preference is, rather than trying to find the next Tony Gonzalez is to find players that fit the offensive philosophy, whatever the hell that is. Right now, I think finding a serious blocker at the TE position is more important.
If a pass catcher is needed (and it is!!!) we should get a really strong WR or two.
Love the fact that TG was a Chief for 12 years. Accept that he’s a one of a kind and otherworldly. Going out and looking for someone to fill that role is an expensive waste of time. We have a couple of serviceable pass catchers but we NEED a blocking TE in the worst way.

I dunno about the 12 years being good, necessarily. *as I DUCK*
Every year we went back to the well to improve the team, having a TE as franchise player stuck out like a sore thumb. Seemed like the salary structure was outta whack, especially when the team had holes in the line(s) and at WR, and were having a hard time keeping their best corners happy.
